Ottoman Sultans kept a harem of hundreds of enslaved concubines to bear their children. But from 1533 to 1656 a handful of remarkable women bent the harem system to their wills and exercised extraordinary political influence and power. This period is known as the The Sultanate of Women.

A History of Names

A History of Names

A double header about the history of first names and last names. “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” As Romeo pondered the significance of the moniker of his beloved we have to admit, names are something we take for granted but they are a huge part of human culture. Expectant parents agonize about what to call their new bundle of joy. Multiple studies have shown that your name affects how people perceive everything from our intelligence and personality to how we look. Lets take a look at the history of given names, where they came from, where they are coming from now and some interesting naming traditions from around the world…

Henry VIII's Christmas Feast

Henry VIII's Christmas Feast

King Henry VIII liked to live large and luxurious 365. But especially at Christmas. He and his wife of the moment enjoyed decadent feasts including classics we know today like mince pie and gingerbread and more surprising fare like swan, brawn and boars head. All washed down with copious quantities of mead, gruit and wine. His majesty received gop-smackingly expensive and highly political Christmas presents. He partied, played games and generally made himself a very merry monarch indeed. So don your dashing doublet and pull up your hose or lace up your loveliest corset and gown - not too tight! And lets enjoy King Henry VIII’s Christmas feast!
Plum Pottage, Mince Pie, Plum pudding, Christmas pudding
Salad
Roasts: Peacock, partridge, swan, brawn and boars head
Banquet course (dessert) gingerbread, marzipan, sugar plate, royal icing.

The 12 Days of Medieval Christmas

The 12 Days of Medieval Christmas

We’re familiar with the Christmas carol “The 12 days of Christmas” but in the middle ages, this extended holiday Christmas looked a bit different. There were plenty of lords-a-leaping and ladies dancing but the only partridge was trussed up on the King’s table next to the swans-a-swimming in gravy. And the gold rings were baked in the Christmas pudding! Medieval people dropped their plows, wrapped their spinning wheels in holly and ivy and took 12 days off, from Christmas day to Epiphany on January 6th. As the yule log crackled in the fire they feasted, played games and sports, attended mass, enjoyed subversive revelry and imbibed gallons of wassail. It all culminated into the most raucous party of the year on twelfth night! So Deck your halls, mull some wine, and cut a slice of mince pie as we join in the celebrations of the 12 days of Medieval Christmas...
Advent, December 24th - Christmas Eve
December 25th - Christmas Day - 1st day of Christmas
December 26th - The Feast of St Stephen - 2nd day of Christmas
December 27th - The Feast of St John - 3rd day of Christmas
December 28th - Childermas - 4th day of Christmas
December 29th - Feast of St. Thomas Becket - 5th day of Christmas
December 30th - 6th
December 31st - New Year’s Eve  - 7th day
January 1st - New Year’s Day - 8th day
January 2nd - 9th day
January 3rd - 10th day
January 4th - 11th day
January 5th - Twelfth Night - 12th day
January 6th - Epiphany

My historically accurate 12 Days of Christmas Song:

On the 12th day of medieval Christmas my true love gave to me:
Twelve massive parties
Eleven herbs and spices
Ten archery arrows
Nine saints bones
Eight royal presents
Seven swans-a-roasted
Six carole singers
Five bowls of wassail
Four bishop boys
Three mince pies
Two alms for the poor
and a boars head on a bed of holly!

Queen Elizabeth II's Grandchildren

Queen Elizabeth II's Grandchildren

Queen Elizabeth II’s 4 children have given her 8 grandchildren. While her children were the first generation of royals to have their lives laid bare for public scrutiny, her grandchildren grew up in the limelight and have a better handle on it. The Queen’s children and their scandals nearly brought about the downfall of the monarchy. But the next generation has brought a resurgence in its popularity as young royals aim to position themselves as more genuine and down to earth, despite having a monarch for a grandmummy. Lets take a look at the mostly charmed lives of the 8 royal grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II with updates on what they've been up to in the last few years:
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
Peter Phillips
Zara Phillips Tindall
Princess Beatrice
Princess Eugenie
Lady Louise Windsor
James, Viscount Severn

Queen Elizabeth II's Children

Queen Elizabeth II's Children

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is mother to four children: Charles, Prince of Wales Anne, Princess Royal Prince Andrew, Duke of York Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex The famously stoic monarch is unsurprisingly not a warm and affectionate mother. As the children grew up so did the media. Tabloids and television demanded more insight into the lives of the royal family than ever before. The mystical reverence for monarchy was lost and the Queen’s children became real-life soap stars as the press hungrily followed their every triumph and tragedy. The privileged princes and princess were expected to be charming yet accessible and to exemplify a perfect family life. Standards that, through divorce and scandal proved impossible to live up to. Let’s take a look at the lives of Queen Elizabeth’s four children with updates on what they've been up to in the last few years.

3 Twisted Tales of Royal Exhumation

3 Twisted Tales of Royal Exhumation

Happy Halloween! When someone dies and is laid to rest we tend to think of them as gone. But their remains may remain waiting to play a further part in history. For your consideration, here are three twisted tales about royals whose earthly vessels were not left in peace. One involves an exhumation done out of love, one done out of hate and the final exhumation may hold the key to solving a centuries old murder mystery.
1. Inês de Castro, Posthumous Queen of Portugal – All Hail the Corpse Queen!
2. Oliver Cromwell – He killed King and his corpse paid the price!
3. Richard III and the Princes in the Tower – Centuries of propaganda and Cold-case murders

Royal & Noble Serial Killers – Female

Royal & Noble Serial Killers – Female

Today about 85% of all serial killers are male. On the rare occasions when a woman commits murder, it is far more shocking to society. But history reveals a handful of femme fatals who took the lives of others to gain power or even for their own sadistic pleasure. Royal and noble women were particularly well positioned to indulge their evil impulses. Wealth and power gave them nearly limitless freedom to prey on peasants, who in turn had little means of seeking justice. Today we’ll investigate the cases of 5 female aristocratic serial murderers from history:
Anula, Queen of Anuradhapura, ? – 44 BCE
Elizabeth Báthory, Hungarian Countess 1560 – 1614
Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer, “La Quintrala”, Spanish & Chilean Noblewoman 1604 – 1665
Marie-Madeleine d’Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers 1630 – 1676
Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova, 1755–1762

Royal & Noble Serial Killers – Male

Royal & Noble Serial Killers – Male

Through most of history, royals and nobles held a place high above the peasant class. Their word was law and they could often get away with murder, literally. So much unchecked power sometimes went to a rulers head, morphing their darker urges into unspeakable acts of violence and cruelty. The lives of peasants were given very little value, and there were few means to investigate or seek justice against murderous aristocrats. High-born psychopaths were nearly unstoppable in their bloodlust and often racked up victim counts in the hundreds. Let’s investigate the cases of 4 royal and noble serial killers from history, and look at the theories that one of the most famous slashers of all time, Jack the Ripper was really a member of the British Royal family.
Liu Pengli, Prince of Jidong, 144–116 BC
Dhu Shanatir, Himyarite King, 5th century CE
Gilles de Rais, Baron de Retz 1405 – 1440
Sado, Crown Prince of Joseon, 1757–1762
Prince Albert Victor if the United Kingdom 1864–1892

A History of Childbirth

A History of Childbirth

Throughout history one thing has had more impact on women’s lives than almost anything else - giving birth to children. In this episode we will explore various aspects of this paramount and awe-inspiring process and how it has changed across cultures and through time. From how we think about conception and fertility to some rather kooky pregnancy tests; from the day to day realities of pregnancy and how pregnant women were seen by their communities to the changing medical practices surrounding that most amazing dangerous moment in women’s lives, childbirth.

Royal Castles & Palaces of England: Tudor (2/3)

Royal Castles & Palaces of England: Tudor (2/3)

What makes a man a King? Aside from genetic luck and a glittering crown, it’s a castle. In this three part series, we’ll explore 15 of the most historically important Royal Castles & Palaces of England. In the last episode we explored the medieval castles built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century to impose his might upon the land. For his warrior descendants, the Normand and the Plantagenet, having a home that could withstand a trebuchet was paramount. But by the 15th and 16th centuries, war had moved from the castle to the battlefield and the new Tudor monarchs could prioritize grandiose spaces and luxurious living. It was time to move out of the dank defensive castles and in to a new breed of lavish, sprawling palaces.
Richmond Palace 1383–1649
Greenwich Palace (Palace of Placentia) 1500–1660
Hampton Court Palace 1529-1760
Palace of Whitehall 1530–1698
St James’s Palace 1530–1837
BONUS: Nonesuch Palace

Royal castles and palaces have played witness to the lives of Kings and Queens and many key moments in history. In this three part series, we’ll explore 15 of the most historically important Royal Castles & Palaces of England. Let’s begin with the medieval castles, built to be tough and to impose the King’s might upon his subjects. The comfort and luxury were an afterthought to staying alive during siege warfare. These oldest royal residences in England have nearly a millennial of history under their belts. They have been transformed many times over the years and have served a number of colorful purposes, from seat of democratic government to scene of tyrannical torture and execution. From fabricated namesake of the modern royal family to Queen Elizabeth’s favorite home to this day.

How is the next monarch decided? How many people are in the line of succession and what can they do to get themselves booted? Can LGBT+ royals get married and can adopted children be a part of the succession?  Will Prince Harry be regent if George becomes King before he’s an adult?  Will Kate Middleton be a Queen?  What’s the difference between a Queen Regnant, Queen Consort, Dowager Queen and Queen Mother? Why is Princess Anne in the line of succession after her younger brothers? Why is Queen Elizabeth’s husband is called Prince Philip and not King Philip? I answer your questions about the royal line of succession.

How Inbred were the Habsburgs? 2/2: The Austrian Line

How Inbred were the Habsburgs? 2/2: The Austrian Line

Royals throughout history are notorious for inbreeding. But the European royal family by far infamously incestuous were the Habsburgs (Hapsburgs). The royal house ruled Spain from 1506 to 1700 and held the Holy Roman Empire from 1452 until 1806. These two branches of the family vollied brides back and forth like ping pong balls. Cousins married cousins and uncles married nieces. All in the name of keeping wealth and power in the family and keeping their blood blue. They were oblivious to the havoc all this intermarrying was playing on their genetics. The tragic results were numerous family members with mental illness, intellectual disability, vulnerability to diseases, and a famously unusual continence which came to be known as the Hapsburg Jaw. Just how inbred where the Habsburgs? Short answer, very. Long answer, well, let's get into it!   Frederick III, the Peaceful  Maximilian I Charles V Ferdinand I Maximilian II Rudolph II Matthias Ferdinand II  Ferdinand II Leopold I  Joseph I Charles VI  Maria Theresa & Francis I  Joseph II Leopold II  Francis II Ferdinand I Franz Joseph I Charles I Karl von Habsburg
