Episode 110: Fort Totally Worth It
It has been way too long!! Do not worry, the Hotties are back with some WTA Final action and Hot Headline catch-up. We just took an intermission to settle into our very demanding academic lives, but we promise the podcast is not going anywhere. Very eager to get back into the groove, we start by discussing some Halep drama regarding her not being aware of taking an illegal enhancing substance (??), then the three babies born to former #1 players, and the other baby born in October belonging to Gael and Elena…very, very busy season. Then we jump straight into Tennis Talk with the tournaments we’ve missed: Iga avenging her loss to the dreaded Barbie K. in San Diego and FELIX ABSOLUTELY KILLING IT with three consecutive titles. All that’s left for us is waiting for Paris Masters and enjoying some Fort Worth magic. Tune in for a revival like no other!

Episode 109: This One's for Roger
There has only been one headline on everyone’s minds this week. Roger. Federer’s. Retirement. As GenZ’ers, Roger’s career has meant something different to us, but he has had an undeniable cross-generation impact on tennis. In this episode of Hold On to Your Racket, we’re paying homage to not only an absolute legend, but the era of tennis he and Serena are taking with them. There’s no saying what’ll be in the future, but one thing is for sure: Josefina is still very much in denial about this ordeal. This one’s for the history books, so tune in and enjoy our emotional babbling.

With a new era of ATP tennis peaking through and 2022's top two in form WTA players facing off in the last grand slam of the year, the US Open once again does not disappoint! Be sure to also tune in for Hot Headlines, where we bid a final farewell to Serena and discuss Fiona Ferro’s brave words about being sexually assaulted by her former coach. Last few nights of tennis in the Big Apple; show us what you got.

Episode 107: Big Apple, Big Dreams
HOTYR’s favorite slam is finally here and we couldn’t be more excited. My dear co-host, Josefina, is away on a well deserved vacation this week so instead I, Shravya, am joined by a HOTYR local, dear friend and loyal Nolefam member Miller. We begin our lively conversation with a rundown of some of the latest headlines, namely Djokovic confirming his absence from the US Open (a tough pill to swallow for my crocfam guest cohost) and Victoria Azarenka being booted from the Tennis Plays for Peace exhibition. As is HOTYR tradition, Tennis Talk this episode is dedicated to unpacking the men's and women's singles US Open draws; Daniil and Emma’s title defense, pressure on Iga and Carlos, and exciting potential for the likes of Pegula, Coric, Fritz, Garcia, and more are all topics we discuss in this segment. And of course, fingers crossed for a promising Serena run; it’s the GOAT’s last dance.

Episode 106: Rockin' With Robin
We are so excited to share this interview with you all. For the first time in HOTYR history, we got to sit down with a real life professional tennis player (yes, they actually exist): Robin Montgomery! What better perspective to hear from than a fellow tennis obsessed GenZ-er? We discuss Robin’s young tennis career, including her impressive 2021 US Open girls singles and doubles championship double whammy and the transition from the junior to the pro circuit. We discuss the day in the life of a pro athlete, building a supportive team, and the WTA's mental health efforts, as well as Robin’s favorite memories on tour, including the times she got to hit with Venus and Naomi, World Team Tennis, her US Open main draw experience, and being graced by a particular Italian’s presence. It’s always a pleasure to highlight GenZ talents, and we are so grateful to have gotten the chance to speak with Robin – enjoy!

Episode 105: Having a Ball
Cincy tennis baby! We start with a little blast from the past; while getting ready to leave for college, Shravya discovered a little elementary school project, a book she wrote in first grade titled “How to Be a Good Tennis Player.” Next time your fave is in their flop era, lend them this book. We then chat about the action in Cincy this week, with a resurgent WTA field (and some drama about balls?) and an exciting array of ATP players coming through strong this year. Caroline Garcia's hot streak, Madison Keys' strong play, Carlitos' reliable Masters 1000 game, and our favorite octopus' pre-US Open defense journey are all on the list in this episode. As the US Open is upon us, the stars in Cincy are sure to guide us to Flushing Meadows’ next success stories.

Episode 104: O Canada! O Serena!
Another classic episode of HOTYR with your two favorite teenage mutant ninja turtle hosts, minus the mutant ninja turtle part. This episode has an extra layer of pizzazz because Shravya made a little trip up to Toronto to watch some tennis, so we have some up-close and personal accounts of the tennis in the Maple Leaf Country. We open up with a heartfelt discussion of an icon leaving the sport, that icon being Serena Williams. We go into her article with Vogue, and what role gender has played in the circumstances that led her to choose between her family and her athletic career. A really prevalent issue today, we feel it is important to highlight that Serena’s freedom to make the choice to retire was awarded because of how hard she has worked for it. Either way, definitely a tough conversation to have considering we are saying goodbye to the woman who has shaped the modern tennis world; simply put, there will never be another Serena. We could talk about Serena for hours on end, but we then get into some Canadian Masters tennis thats taking place right now and who to look out for as we move into the semis in both Montreal and Toronto (especially PCB aka Mr. Solid). From British baes to Brazilian breakouts, this bonkers bunch brings the banter.

Episode 103: The Blair Flair
It’s like we’ve met our idol…because the one and only Blair Henley was our guest this episode! Blair has become one of the most recognizable faces in tennis media, working at some of the top tournaments (including the Grand Slams, tour finals, Masters 1000 events, and much more) to bring the player content we know and love. We chat with Blair about her career, all the way from her college tennis experience, freelance tennis writing days, and first tournament media trips to jet setting around the US and world to interview the ATP and WTA’s biggest stars as she does today. As we go-over her career overall, we hone in on her unique perspective of the sport and unique experiences that came with it, for example what her experience covering the USA vs. Ukraine BJK Cup match just days after the Russian invasion. What makes working in tennis so special? Who have been some of her favorite and most difficult players to interview? We discuss all this and more, including, of course, some of Blair’s insights into the tennis going on this week at the Citi Open and in San Jose and Los Cabos, as well as a fun rapid fire at the end. The two of us were so grateful to be able to sit down with Blair, someone who we are truly inspired by and whose passion for her career is evident in all of her content, including this episode. Come for the lively conversation and hard court swing chatter, stay for the laughs.

Episode 102: Little Miss Random Clay Swing
Seriously…we thought we were done with the dirt. Nevertheless, we persisted. This GenZ tennis podcasting duo is back to chat some of the best tennis highlights, both on and off the court, of the past two weeks. Recent action has shown us Musetti magic, Bernarda on fire, Fran’s title debut, Domi’s return to form, and some strong play from Anett, Matteo, and Casper; faves doing well all around! Off the court, we have some important developments to discuss, namely Daria Kasatkina and Andrey Rublev’s bombshell YouTube interview. The Russian tennis stars discussed issues ranging from Russia-Ukraine to homosexuality, with Kasatkina coming out as gay and Rublev discussing his openness towards changing citizenship if it means being able to play on the pro circuit without facing restrictions. We talk about the role of independent media, censorship, and the press in Russia, all topics that became relevant to the tennis world following this vlog. We also chat about the success of Iga Swiatek’s charity event for Ukraine, Serena and Venus’ impending returns to the US swing, a certain petition for a certain unvaccinated someone, and a hardcourt swing wishlist…Soak up the July sun with this episode as we eagerly await the US Open swing – enjoy!

Episode 101: In a Wimby Tizzy
We’re wrapping up Wimbledon in classy fashion with this episode and an awesome event thrown by Wimbledon, the Hill in NY, featuring live viewing of the finals at an NYC replication of Henman Hill. We dive right into the conversation that needs to be had, the Kyrgios allegations. We discuss victim erasure in the media and different conversations (or lack thereof) that are being had regarding Chiara Passari, Nick’s ex-girlfriend, taking him to Canberra court. It’s disappointing how little the issue has been discussed in tennis media due to Nick’s recent success in making the men's final at Wimbledon. After wrapping up that necessary discussion, we get into the tennis. The women's final brought plenty of entertainment with Ons’ big grand slam breakout performance and Elena’s cool as a cucumber celebration (?) after the biggest win of her young career; an awesome women’s tournament and classy final duo. When we move to the mens’ final, we talk about the ghost finalist that could have been Berrettini and the birth of a cringe worthy bromance. Instead, we have Novak Djokovic eating grass and effectively dapping up Nick Kyrgios. So that’s that for Wimbledon 2022.

Episode 100: Who Will Win-bledon?
A monumental episode for Hold On to Your Racket! ONE. HUNDRED. EPISODES. We hit this big step in the HOTYR journey with a stellar episode. We discuss mostly Wimbledon, since it is currently happening in case you didn’t know. We start it out with some unfortunate withdrawals due to Covid from Matteo and Marin, then close out Hot Headlines with some talk about what Iga has been doing with her spotlight. She’s been organizing a charity to aid with Ukrainian relief efforts. Of course, the talk of the United States is the decision to overturn Roe v Wade. As the podcast has evolved, we’ve made an effort to implement current affairs into tennis and tennis news as well as results, this includes our experience as GenZers growing up in the modern world, so we felt it was the right thing to do - discussing the current situation. After that we dive into Wimbledon talk and who has the best chances on both sides. In true HOTYR- fashion we dedicate just a bit more time to the WTA rundown. Tune in! This one’s historical! *note: we made an error when discussing ADF’s match. He received a point penalty when he was facing match point, not when he had match point.* *note: we also misunderstood the scheduling of Raducanu’s match. She opened on Monday, not Tuesday, which is when the tradition for the women’s defending champion is supposed to be. Iga Swiatek received the honor.*

Episode 99: Touch Some Grass
Summer has officially started and the grass is greener than ever; welcome to the grass season! As we soak up the summer sun and embark on two months of tennis coaching (oh boy), we turn from our Red Ball classes to the professional level, discussing the latest on the ATP and WTA tours when it comes to the grass. A celebration of Serena’s return and Rafael Nadal’s baby are both in order, as well as a look at the 2022 grass champions so far and some special love for Tim van Rijthoven. Who’s in form for a deep Wimbledon run? Who could surprise us with some strong play at SW19? From Matteo to Beatriz, from Hubi to Ons, we’re excited to dive into the grassy action. Tune in for an enthusiastic embrace of grass court play.

Episode 97: Merci, Jo
Bonjour, mes amis! We are back with a quick turnaround to celebrate the fun and chaos of the French Open! Join us as we discuss the action in the early rounds in Paris (Stef’s routine comeback, OJ and Barbie K’s early exits, Shapo’s rush to get back to rapping, and more), the ATP and WTA’s formal decision about Wimbledon, player responses to the point drop (Naomi, don’t just quit the grass!), and a tribute to Jo-Willy. It’s rare we get to bask in the fun of the early stages of a slam, so tune in for a good one.

Episode 96: Point-Drop Mic Drop
We’re coming close to a huge HOTYR milestone: 10k plays!! Very exciting and what an episode to close it out… juicy hot headlines and an in-depth Clay Slam preview await. We hit it off with the big topic: the ATP and WTA stripping Wimbledon of ranking points in response to their Russian/Belarussian player ban. We discuss the impact and grounds behind this move and what role politics play in the sports world today. In addition to that, we emphasize a few exciting announcements, including the Elina-Gael baby news. The other big discussion in Hot Headlines is the stigma that players, especially male, have to keep up the appearance of seeming invincible. This conversation is brought about by Rafa’s decision to play through his chronic foot pain in the French Open. We close out the episode with a nice preview of the French Open WTA and ATP draws, quarter-by-quarter. Top contenders, such as Iga…and Iga, Novak, Tsitsipas etc. are mentioned here, as well as the usual dark horse highlights. Tune in for all the latest French Open and tennis world updates in one listen!

Episode 95: Dramarama Roma
Buongiorno! HOTYR takes Italia in this episode covering the action at the Italian Open in Rome. We discuss who’s remaining in the field on the ATP and WTA sides of the tournament, including Shapo’s surprising victory (plus a theory we have about what exactly led to his success...) and our favorite cup of OJ’s (Ons Jabeur, if you didn’t get the joke) continued clay success. We also highlight the Italian Open’s egregious pay inequality between its WTA and ATP prize money, as well as Naomi Osaka’s departure from IMG and subsequent business venture, Johanna Konta’s pregnancy, and Roger Federer’s comeback. Enjoy!

Episode 94: Spain With the 'S'?
After a bit of rest since our last episode, we are back! Thank you to everyone who tuned into Episode 93 and shared the love; we really appreciate it and are excited to welcome some new listeners to HOTYR! This episodes dives into the ATP And WTA clay season action so far, particularly in Madrid, but we also explore some important off-court discussions. For example, what’s up with the Wimbledon ban? Is it effective? How can the tennis world ensure that we’re being empathetic towards Ukrainian players (and people) while also acting fairly? What role does sport play in politics? After that fruitful discussion, the two of us move on to what we feel is one of the most important conversations we’ve had on the podcast. We discuss Pam Shriver’s recent Telegraph article about her emotionally abusive relationship with her coach, Don Candy, when she was 17 years old and he was 33, highlighting some of the feelings she experienced during (and in the aftermath of) their relationship and messages she shared for young women, as well as our own ability to relate to some of what Shriver was discussing. Hang around for a Naomi shoutout and a celebration of one of our favorite ATP dilfs. Enjoy!

Episode 93: Riddled With Morgan
Special guest alert: Morgan Riddle! The woman on a mission to make tennis cool again, social media influencer with nearly 50k followers on Instagram and over 230k followers on TikTok, “Tennis Tour 101” TikTok creator, and girlfriend of Taylor Fritz (ATP #13, highest ranked American male player) joins us on this very special episode of HOTYR. We discuss Morgan’s career, how she got into influencing and found herself in the world of tennis, and advice for fellow badass, ambitious females like her. Morgan talks to us about everything from social media hate, internalized misogyny, and the importance of speaking openly about mental health to the behind the scenes of the upcoming tennis Netflix show, what the professional tennis tour’s social circle looks like, and how she has acclimated to the ATP tour life. We end with a fun game of Would You Rather (strawberries and cream or Honey Deuce, the ultimate question) and some dating tips for anyone looking to meet a professional tennis player. Take this opportunity to learn more about Morgan’s impressive career and what’s to come in her travel-busy life as a tennis influencer. Enjoy, hotties!

Episode 90: This One's for Ash
Well! You already know what this episode is about. The Barty Party has now come to an end (that was hard to type). We unpack Ash’s retirement and her wonderful video farewell, discussing all things balance, passion, and breaking down the barriers of what it means to be a “successful” professional athlete. We don’t hesitate to lay all the (sometimes misogynistic) critiques of her decision to bed and reflect on Ash’s career and inspiring attitude, one that can teach us all a few things. We also discuss Iga Swiatek’s victory in Indian Wells, plus her likely rise to #1 and words about Barty, Taylor Fritz’s magical run, Nadal’s injury, and all the action that is to come in Miami (including some...kind words about Raducanu/Draper's agent ;) ). Soak up some of that 305 sun because this episode is sure to be a good one.

Episode 89: This Desert Isn't Dry
On this episode of HOTYR, we speak not only from expertise but also experience, because we had our very own Shravya at Indian Wells for the week!! Before we get to tennis though, we get into our Women’s Month shout-out: Oracene Price, the severely underhyped superwoman in the lives of icons Venus and Serena Williams. We also discuss Nick Kyrgios and his most recent behavior (or lack thereof), as well as a recent announcement from Wimbledon regarding Russian participation in their tournament. Within Hot Headlines, Shravya contributed with a personal account of hearing Dayana Yastremska speak of her experience as a Ukrainian war refugee. Next up is the actual tennis: a recap of the semifinal action, an analysis of the upcoming Iga/Maria final (so excited!) and the impressive state of WTA tennis, and also some ATP (Rafa) talk, including a debrief on Taylor Fritz's love affair with the desert. Iganators, Sakkattackers, Rafans, and Fritzies, this one goes out to y’all. Tune in for the ultimate inside scoop!!

Episode 87: Slava Ukraini
Welcome back, hotties. This episode comes at a difficult moment in the current state of geopolitics and the news, so we want to dedicate much of our discussion towards the calls for peace and brave activism from both Ukrainian and Russian voices in the tennis world. Sport is, after all, a microcosm of the world’s social causes. We discuss the Yastremska sisters’ heartbreaking flight from home and emotional moments on court, Elina Svitolina’s activism, and the brave outspokenness of the likes of Andrey Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova showing their support as Russian players. We also give our take on the IOC’s Recommendations for banning athletes and the tennis world’s response, while also overviewing other notable stories like our Women’s History Month feature, Medvedev’s rise to #1, Naomi Osaka’s Fortnite debut, Zverev's disqualification, Leander Paes' domestic abuse conviction, and Iga Swiatek, Rafael Nadal, and Sloane Stephens’ stellar play last week. Last but certainly not least, be sure to tune in so you can find out how to vote us for Best Tennis Podcast in the Sports Podcast Awards! See linktr.ee/HoldOntoYourRacketPodcast for more. Sending love to you all during this difficult times.

Episode 86: Tiresome Two-Fifties
In this episode we discussed plenty of news, and PLENTY of tennis. These past few weeks have practically been nothing but 250s. ATP 250s, that is. Before we dive into Tennis Talk, we address the trending issue of a lack of WTA tournaments compared to ATP. Even before that, however, we reluctantly discuss yet another one of Djocovid’s latest ignorant stunts…his interview with BBC. Luckily for us and our listeners…there’s more to talk about Hot Headlines-wise. We take a moment to appreciate Venus and Serena’s iconic Harper’s Bazaar interview (and accompanying pics), and last (but certainly not least) we talk Morgan Riddle’s (Taylor Fritz’s girlfriend) venture into expanding tennis’ platform to a wider (and younger) audience via – get this – tennis influencing. Unfortunately, she’s been receiving (sexist) backlash for it, and we break down why what she’s doing for our sport is so instrumental in the growth of it. Tune in for some nice discussion on tennis’ latest happenings!

Episode 84: Truly a Happy Slam
Happy Slam by name, Happy Slam in truth – what a magical Australian Open! We sit down several timezones away from Melbourne to discuss the magic of Rafa’s win, the everlasting Barty Party, and celebrate Dylan Alcott’s trailblazing career. We discuss GOAT debates and Rafa’s undying competitive fire, love for the game, and heartwarming show of emotions on court after proving his own modest expectations wrong with his historic championship victory. With that comes a look into Daniil Medvedev’s saddening post-match press conference and a discussion of his behavior and identity on court, as well as a shoutout to some notable semifinalists and Hugo Boss model. A discussion of the women’s tournament delves into Ash Barty’s cool, calm, and collected run to becoming the first Australian since 1978 to take the title and how her strong serving led her there. Queen DanYELL is certainly not unforgotten as we express our appreciation for her fighting spirit, college tennis representation, comeback from endometriosis, and outspokenness about the societal taboos around women’s health issues. With queens like Ash and Collins, tried and true favorites like Rafa and Medvedev, and the legend that is Dylan Alcott defining this fortnight, it’s all happiness at this slam, so tune in for a well deserved celebration of this year’s Australian Open.

We do our best to break it all down and give you all the sides of the story, as there are quite a few people at fault here beyond just Novak, plus our take on the whole situation. Episode 78: #WhereIsPengShuai
The focus of this episode first and foremost is to discuss the story of Peng Shuai, the Chinese tennis star who came out with allegations of sexual assault against former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli last week and is now missing. This story has garnered attention beyond just the tennis world, with the WTA, fellow tennis players, politicians, and the media speaking out. Peng Shuai’s disappearance also represents a lot about the state of #MeToo and censorship in China. We hope and pray for her safety, so please take the time to listen to and read about her story. We also discuss some ATP and WTA tennis that went down this week, including a celebration of Mugu’s Guadalajara success and other takeaways from the WTA Finals, heartbreaking injuries and debut alternates at the ATP Finals, Federer’s 2022 season doubts, and our usual analysis and giggles.

Episode 77: Final-ly Some WTA
Hold on to your rackets, folks, because it's WTA FINALS TIME, BABY! If you couldn't tell, we are beyond excited. We’re back with consistent episodes?? YUP! Luckily the focus of this episode is the WTA (insert heart eyes emoji)!! So we start it out with some recap of recent tennis like the RTF triumph at BJK Cup and Djoko's revenge at the Paris Masters. Then we check-in on some current tournaments like Stockholm, where Sir Andy took out our favorite ATP ginger, and the Linz defeat of Emma (we discuss her hype and the fact that she deserves some leniency, people (!!), as well as her new coach). Then we finally talk about some Finals action (ATP NextGen); our boy Sebi is lowkey goating. FINALLY WTA!! It’s still pretty early in the tournament so it’s tough to discuss what’ll end up happening but we give you the preview and we give it good (well?). We give you the rundown of the groups and our picks to win, so tune in to hear us blab about our favorite ladies!!

Episode 76: Hooray for Tay-Tay, No Wait for Kontaveit
Indoor season madness continues with action at the Paris Masters and the Billie Jean King Cup! We start off by discussing two important Hot Headlines: player vaccination requirements for the Australian Open and Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai’s recent sexual accusations against Zhao Gaoli and the government’s efforts to silence her. In Tennis Talk we update you on Finals action at the Billie Jean King Cup, discussing Team Russia’s firepower, USA’s narrow semifinal qualification, and the close match-up between the Czech Republic and Switzerland to come. In Paris, we highlight Djokovic and Medvedev’s tour level indoor hardcourt debuts but focus our attention to the real deal at Paris: the (not so under) underdogs. Tay-Tay Fritz, Cam Norrie, Dominik Koepfer, and Sebastian Korda are all included in our discussion. Last but not least, we update you on the WTA Race to Guadalajara and the ATP Race to Turin as we talk about Anett Kontaveit’s magical qualification run, Ons Jabeur’s humorous sportswomanship, and the battle for the last few spots in Turin. Enjoy!

Episode 75: A Temporarily Deserted Podcast
Sadly, the two of us were sick all throughout Indian Wells and our voices were…not ideal for podcasting. Now that we have recovered we are back to do what we do best and talk tennis! We start with an important discussion about domestic violence on the ATP tour, discussing the stories of Zverev, Basilashvili, Seyboth Wild, and Kyrgios that have come to surface. We recap the desert action and discuss Badosa’s breakthrough win, the depth on the WTA tour right now, and other notable IW players like Azarenka, Ostapenko, and Jabeur, who made history this week by entering the top 10 and becoming the highest ranked Arab player in tennis history! On the ATP side, we discussed Norrie’s college tennis roots and his career-best season this year, along with Dimitrov's stellar run, Fritz’ SoCal success and our conspiracy theory that Andy Murray does not in fact have metal hips because how the heck is that guy still running around like a god. Don't miss our celebration of the doubles champions, especially Hsieh Su-Wei's green dragon hat. In perfect HOTYR fashion, jokes and thirsting are a given in this episode, so tune in and hold on to your racket.

Episode 74: Lamer Cup
As we say in this episode, the Laver Cup served boring this year. Nevertheless, we’re here to recap the important parts of some of the best ATP and WTA action last week, as well as a few key moments from the Team Europe vs. Team World showdown (blowout): Annett’s title roll, Sakkari’s top ten debut, Hubi grabbing two trophies in Moselle, Kwon making history for South Korea, and key reflections on Opelka’s comment about Zverev and the Laver Cup ignoring the Zverev allegations. We also discuss Hot Headlines, including Federer’s recovery and recent comments on social media and pressure put on players like Raducanu and Osaka, as well as recent coaching splits on the WTA tour. The Laver Cup may have been lamer this year, but that doesn’t mean that the two of us don’t make the best of our chat in this episode. Tune in!

Episode 73: L2 + Lift Those Trophies
After a crazy couple of weeks in Queens, the US Open has come to an end. We relive and recap the feats of Emma Raducanu and Daniil Medvedev, discuss the former’s teenage dream and the latter’s successful quest to stop history (and make his own history while he was at it). Amidst our discussion of the finals arise conversations around the love New York showed for Novak, how the media portrays young female athletes, the long-awaited crack at the Big 3 generation, and Emma and Leylah’s ability to bring star power and major attention to tennis (the women’s final had more TV viewers than the men’s final!) We also discuss the history made in wheelchair tennis, with de Groot, Alcott, Hewett, and Reid completing Golden and Calendar slams left, right, and center. And of course, in true HOTYR fashion, stick around for some laughs and tea as we discuss the Met Gala, Simona Halep’s wedding, and Daniil’s iconic dead fish moment.

Episode 72: Ashes to Ashe-s
As week 1 of the US Open wrapped up and we move into quarterfinal territory, we discuss all the craziness that has gone on in Flushing Meadows these past eight days. First we discuss some of this week’s Hot Headlines, including Naomi Osaka’s third round loss, behavior on court, post-match comments about taking a break from tennis, and the importance of prioritizing mental health. We also talk about US Open Pride Day and ATP players’ supportive comments about the sentiment, including words from FAA about spearheading an LGBTQ+ community research initiative within the ATP. As for the tennis, it’s been a Gen Z party. Along with a discussion about their stellar tennis, we also ponder what a dinner party with Jenson, Emma, Leylah, and Carlos would look like. We discuss faves like Svito and Matteo and second week standouts like Oscar Otte, Shelby Rogers, and Josefina’s newest crush: Botic VDZ. This has certainly taken the cake for our favorite episode yet, and it’s only fitting that that happened at our favorite tournament of the season, so jump into the tennis and enjoy.

The two of us discuss the highs and lows of Wimbledon, including Ash Barty and Novak Djokovic’s history-making championship runs, Matteo Berrettini’s contribution to a successful weekend for Italian sport, Karolina Pliskova’s resurgence, and key breakthroughs from players like Raducanu, Shapovalov, and Sabalenka. The laughs are back, so join us for a quick chat about tennis and more.

Episode 66: Slippery Slope
It’s been a slippery first few days of Wimbledon to say the least. In this episode we recap the action of the first two rounds, highlighting upsets and strong play from the field. We look ahead towards Round 3 and assess how the draw is shaping out: opportunity for Barty to continue her dominance, chances for Frances, Coco, Sebi, and Sloane to make American breakthroughs, and stacked sections like Sabalenka’s quarter and Medvedev’s tough opponents to come. We celebrate our grandfather’s second round win (peRFect), Angie’s insane battle, and Sir Andy winning like a knight in shining armor. Last but certainly not least, don’t miss Josefina’s disappointment with some of her ATP faves’ recent social media posts and which career we think could be a fallback for certain ATP players.

Episode 65: Strawberries, Cream, and Grass Court Dreams
Strawberries and cream, let’s hope Wimbledon doesn’t crush our grass court dreams! We’re back to preview Wimbledon as we analyze the women’s and men’s singles draws. We try to remain logical with most of our picks, but, come on now, this is tennis: craziness is bound to happen. We celebrate the return of Barty Party (and how Ash is honoring the 50 year anniversary of a historic accomplishment), highlight the sections packed with this grass season’s most notable players (yup, Jelena Ostapenko is BACK), and eye vintage comebacks from the likes of Kvitova, Kerber, Muguruza, and Serena. On the ATP side, we discuss who (if anyone) can stop the croc, whether Andrey’s ATP 500s loss will propel him into Grand Slam redemption, and the chances of our faves (and contenders) like Matty B, Mr. Daniil, and the one and only Rog. Come for the insightful commentary, stay for the eccentric picks.

Episode 64: Stop and Smell the Grass
This episode mostly consisted of laughs and self-promos, but of course the usual tennis info and hot takes are present as ever. We’re welcoming the grass season on the podcast with a recap of last week’s tournaments and latest news in the tennis world. We’ve had plenty of withdrawals, whether it be for Wimbledon or the Olympics, and we discuss our take on the slew of players deciding not to attend the greatest event in global sports. After that and highlighting our recent collaboration with @TickTockTennis (on all platforms) with a Youtube video (https://youtu.be/zFy1KzUtZrY) featuring our top 5 WTA and ATP contenders for Wimbledon, we head right into last week’s winners. Of course, Shravya does not fail to mention Matteo’s big win, but for all his glory, the spotlight is on Ons for making history as the first Arab woman to win WTA singles title. We have the Tennis Talk, the Hot Headlines, a story about one of our relatives’ encounter with Billie Jean King yesterday, and a tennis-themed party we may or may not have in the works. Tune in for the giggles and deets.

Episode 63: Oohs, Ahs, and Ova's
After a long and difficult journey, we have made it to finals weekend at Roland Garros. We discuss the four singles finalists and their road to this moment in the tournament. We talk Pavlyuchenkova’s rise from talented junior to resurging veteran, Krejcikova flying high with a Czech legend by her side, Novak’s historic win, and Stefanos becoming the first Greek player to make a major final. The two of us, despite being ardent Fedfans, also found ourselves getting emotional about Rafole LVIII and took some time to reflect on the Big Three’s impact on the sport and the importance of today’s match as history unfolded in Paris. Following a chaotic couple of weeks, this conversation and the stories of all four finalists reminded us of all there is to love about the sport.

Episode 62: What's With All the Pilots?
After battling through some tech difficulties, we are back with a new Roland Garros episode! We discuss some of the highlights of Round 2 and provide our insight going into Round 3 and beyond. Most notably, however, we're joined by two fellow Gen Z tennis experts, our friends Eli and Miller. They talk with us to share their extreme admiration for ADF and PCB, notable Round 2 matches, hopes for Serena, the open women's field and looming opportunities for players like Sloane Stephens and Paula Badosa, Medvedev's unexpected wins, and much more as we head into the second half of the French Open. Also don't miss a good old fashioned segment of Aces and Double Faults (Zverev's cakewalk draw is certainly a DF) and Miller, a diehard Djokovic fan, getting sentimental about Roger (yes, you heard that right).
June 05, 2021
Episode 61: Press-ing Matters
Ah yes, the dramatic slam is back. Well, all four are drama queens, but the French Open never fails to steal the show. We discuss Naomi’s withdrawal and the larger theme of mental health in sports, along with other Hot Headlines such as Carla Suarez-Navarro’s return (and the tournament’s decision to schedule her match in the no-fans night session…) and Rolex’s unfortunate new sponsor deal. The two of us also check-in on the tennis (yes, believe it or not but Roland Garros IS having matches in addition to all the drama), overviewing notable upsets (Bianca? Domi? Andrey? What happened?!) and checking in on some of the top seeds. Also don’t miss out on our tennis relationship conspiracy theory and us making the case for Roger Federer to adopt us as his third set of twins.

Episode 60: Paris? It's Brutal Out Here
For the second time in HOTYR history, we are back at the French Open! The main draw of Roland Garros opens tomorrow so we sat down to discuss the tournament to come and the hottest headlines. We unpack Naomi Osaka’s press boycott, the backlash it’s gotten, and why we think she made the right decision, exploring the deeper nuances of the media’s pressures on athletes, particularly BIPOC female athletes like Osaka herself. We then dive into the draws, highlighting favorites like Barty, Swiatek, Sabalenka, Djokovic, Tsitsipas, and Nadal, along with more surprising players who we think could make inroads such as Kudermetova, Badosa, Berrettini, and Garin. It’s a stacked draw for the WTA defending champ and a generational split across the two halves of the ATP draw, so tune in to see which players will shine through and which will have a sour (get it?) clay slam.

Episode 59: Deja Vu? Gia Visto?
In this episode we discuss some Hot Headlines, celebrate last week’s winners in Rome, and discuss the quartet of ATP and WTA 250-level tournaments going on this week. We start off by offering our thoughts on Roger Federer’s disappointing comments on the abuse allegations against Alexander Zverev. We rounded that segment off with some more positive news: Kei Nishikori and his wife are expecting! Then we entered into Tennis Talk, which first consisted of Italian Open WTA & ATP recaps…aka a recap of the 2020 French Open (deja vu!). Before closing out the episode with an honest review of Shapo’s latest tracks, we discussed this week's 250s and how our faves might fare, including the continued emergence of the Next-NextGen (Stricker, Cazaux, Osorio Serrano, and Gauff), Venus’ iconic “I can’t control God” moment in Parma, and our predictions and hopes for these tournaments.

Then we dive into Madrid recap, going over last weeks’ winners and what that title meant for them (Berretafam, unite!). After covering that, we get to the heart of the episode, an Italian Open WTA & ATP draw analysis. In addition to our thoughts on Nole’s reaction to the rain delay and our prospects for top contenders including Tsitsipas, Nadal, and Thiem, our ATP analysis may or may not include some simping on our part. Nonetheless we manage to get the info across even through our laughs. In the WTA draw preview we discuss Serena’s return, a potential rematch of last year’s French Open final, packed quarters, and the race to the semis. Tune in for light-hearted yet action-packed episode!

Episode 56: Drip Down in Madrid Town
In this week’s episode we’re showcasing our talents from rapping Shapo’s Drip to analyzing the Mutua Madrid WTA draw. The episode kicks off with solid recaps of last week’s tournaments including Nadal’s 12th Barcelona title, Belgrade’s new champ, Matteo (Shravya’s forever fave), the Barty Party in Stuttgart, and Cirstea’s milestone win in Istanbul. Later we jump into a preview of the Mutua Madrid (WTA 1000) draw, highlighting each quarter and discussing favorites, action-packed first round and potential future match-ups, and dark horses to watch out for. Is Ash going to reign supreme once again? Could Sabalenka make another deep clay run? Is Clayomi season upon us or should we be worried that she hasn’t been on clay in a while? Episode 55: Best-Dressed and Passing the Clay Test
The clay court season has brought some new champions to the table, but it has also graced us with some very impressive on-court outfits! In this episode, we recap the action in Monte-Carlo and Charleston last week and discuss the four tournaments this week, Barcelona (ATP 500), Stuttgart (WTA 500), Belgrade (ATP 250), and Istanbul (WTA 250). We talk Stef’s first Masters title (and how Josefina accurately predicted his title win at the start of the tournament!), our ranking of our top five favorite Monte-Carlo on-court outfits (we were loving the pink), and Astra Sharma’s first WTA title following her unfortunate scoring snafu in Bogota. Moving into this week, we debate the all important question: is vintage, long-haired Shapo or short-haired, headband-wearing Shapo a better look? We also make our predictions for the tournaments and celebrate the return of some of our WTA faves like Kvitova, Sakkari, and Kostyuk. The clay season is in full swing, so be sure to tune in to stay updated on all the tennis action and tennis tea this week.

Episode 54: The Way of the Clay
Hopefully the sky clears for long enough in Monte-Carlo for a match to be completed, but we’re opening the umbrella to get you the info anyways. We start out this episode with a recap of some of last week’s tournaments, as well as a run down of the latest ITF study, "Exploring Sports Gender Equality in the Media," where we discuss the portrayal and perception of women in tennis (and sports in general) compared to men. After wrapping up that discussion in Hot Headlines, we jump into Tennis Talk. As we “preview” the Monte-Carlo Masters, we take a deep dive into the draw and discuss which top seeds and dark horses we think could make a run. So far, Rafael Nadal is Shravya’s pick to win and Stefanos Tsitsipas is Josefina’s, so stick around to see how they fare in the draw and who our personal faves are to take home the trophy (hint: a certain Argentinian Disney fan is who we're rooting for...).

Episode 53: Triton Talk
Well, HOTYR listeners, this might just be our favorite episode yet. For this episode, we at down to talk with two members of the University of California San Diego Women’s Tennis team, Julianna Sabile and Clara Puscasiu. We discuss everything from the transition from high school to college athletics, what it’s like to be a part of a D1 tennis team, and the lifestyle of a student athlete to overcoming injuries, forming lifelong friendships, and how the recent success of so many former college tennis players on the pro tour has inspired Clara and Julianna. Julianna and Clara also discuss the unique experience of being a female student athlete, highlighting some of their team’s own activism to combat sexist discrepancies in the treatment of the men’s and women’s tennis teams at their university and also providing some much needed insight into the intersection between female athleticism, body image, and stigma. As a TW, we do want to note that we discuss eating disorders and body image from 14:54-16:50. We are so excited to share this episode with you and highly recommend it for anyone interested in or considering college athletics as a path forward! Go Tritons!

Episode 52: Lost in Vaccination
Tennis players making ignorant, vaccine-skeptic comments? What a shocker! The dyanamic duo is back to unpack the latest tennis tea and Miami Open news. In Hot Headlines we discuss Pospisil's emotional outburst on court, "#playersvoice", and the uncertain and confusing future of the PTPA. We also talk about the concerning attitudes towards vaccines that many top players have expressed in the past few days, while also highlighting the ATP and WTA's response and some players who (thankfully) are using their platform responsibly to promote vaccination. Also, is GEMS life back? The two of us and Milos Raonic would love to know. Moving into Tennis Talk, we're approaching the final rounds of the Miami Open, which means that a lot of exciting tennis has happened and a lot of thrilling matches await. We discuss Grecian success (including Maria Sakkari's flawless match vs. Naomi Osaka and Stefanos Tsitsipas' solid season), young guns like Sebastian Korda and Jannik Sinner, the resurgence of Ash Barty and Bianca Andreescu, and the interesting match-up between a mustached Daniil Medvedev and dark horse Roberto Bautista Agut (correction: we said in the episode that their H2H prior to their quarterfinal was 3-1 where in reality it was 2-0 -- our bad!). Come for the tennis and stay for the laughs as we offer our opinions on the latest tennis news and highlight the best of this past week, ranging from Stefanos' shoutout to his girlfriend to Sakkari's perfect hair to Andrey Rublev's ever increasing number of chains.

Episode 50: It's a Good Time to Be Russian
It’s our 50th episode! Thank you so much to all of you who have supported us during our podcasting journey these past seven months. In this episode, we reflect on our path to 50 and the ever dramatic week of tennis that’s unfolding before our eyes this week, complete with everything from young talents breaking through in Mexico (both on the ATP and WTA), home country WTA dominance in Russia, and a final of dark horses in Dubai. The two of us discuss the all-Russian lineup in St. Petersburg (as well as the resurgence of WTA veterans Kuznetsova and Zvonareva), the Harris vs. Karatsev final in Dubai, Lorenzo Musetti’s endearing run in Acapulco (along with a side conversation about the appeal--or lack thereof--of one handed backhands, of course), and our hopes for an Ann Li vs. Leylah Fernandez final in Monterrery. We had a blast recording our 50th episode, so we hope you join in to listen on our discussion on everything from the tennis to the tea.

Episode 49: You've Got to Be Kid-ding Me
So. Much. Tennis. If this isn’t commitment, we don’t know what is because we recap five tournaments in this episode AND preview four more. Before starting off with Tennis Talk, we have baby-talk because not one, but THREE pro tennis players becoming parents whether it be for the first or fourth time. On the WTA side this past week we had the 2021 success story, Garbine Muguruza, with a comeback season title in Dubai, as well as Sara Sorribes Tormo with a maiden title in Guadalajara. Again we discuss Doha’s champion *sigh* Nikoloz Basilashvili without failing to mention his DV case and how it has been ignored by the mainstream tennis media this past year, especially some questionable coverage of his title run this week. And with that conversation comes the discussion of Doha’s real champion, Roberto Bautista Agut, who bested Thiem AND Rublev to make the final. Then we have HOTYR-picked Marseille winner Daniil Medvedev who defeated a personal favorite of ours, man-bunned PHH in the finals. Finally, we discuss Cristian Garin’s under-the-radar success in Chile and preview top seeds, Tiebreakers, and Champion Picks for this week’s upcoming tourneys including Dubai (ATP), St. Petersburg, Monterrey, and Acapulco. We have more recap action coming up later this week, so until next time, hasta la vista, baby.

Episode 48: Aloha from Doha, Hi from Dubai, Hey from Marseilles
There are quite a few key tournaments going on right now, especially Dubai (WTA), Doha (ATP), and Marseille (ATP). We dive into Muguruza shining in Doha, Elise’s epic comeback, and the unlikely semifinal between Krejcikova and Teichmann, without forgetting some obstacles these players had to pass to get there, including Coco Gauff, the teen American star who proved yet again what an asset she is to the pro tour. We then discuss Doha, which undoubtedly included a recap of Roger Federer’s return to the tour a couple of days ago! Our RF inspired outfits are a key element of this conversation, along with our analysis of Federer’s post-unforced error laughs, and his outlook on the next few months, and focus towards the grass court season. We preview both the Doha semifinals and all four semifinalists, discussing “loved-by-everyone” RBA and Fritz’s revenge vs. Shapovalov in the quarterfinals. We also unpack everything behind Basilashvili’s domestic violence case, providing our perspectives on the ATP’s shameful lack of action and the tennis world’s continued ignorance of domestic abuse. We round out the tennis talk with a discussion about whether Tsitsipas can take the Marseille title for a third year in a row or if the winner of Medvedev vs. Sinner or a bottom half dark horse will stand in his way. Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about the tournaments in Santiago and Guadalajara; we talk Holger Rune carrying Danish teenage success into another week and wildcard Eugenie Bouchard pulling through. After that, Aces and Double Faults are back! Our Ace for this episode is Serena Williams speaking out to support her good friend Meghan Markle following her blockbuster Oprah interview, and the Double Fault is a controversial and wacky Instagram post from (big surprise) the one and only Benoit Paire. Tennis is never without drama, and this episodes dishes out on all of it.

Episode 47: Never Kvit
Rublev keeps racking up the 500s and Petra remains stellar in finals. The two of us discuss the tournaments last week and how they played out, including Doha (WTA) and Rotterdam (ATP), as well as Lyon (WTA) and Buenos Aires (ATP) where we saw a Danish teen and an Argentinian great hoist the trophy. Going into this week, we preview the action to come in tournaments including the Dubai WTA 1000 level event and the Doha ATP 250 event, better known as the site of Roger Federer’s return to tennis. We discuss Coco Gauff’s thrilling win, Anisimova’s return, and the stacked field in Dubai, as well as Federer’s tricky first match versus either Chardy or Evans and Shravya’s joy over Shapovalov playing this week. We’re ready to grab our RF Uniqlo hats on Wednesday, so join us as we anticipate the exciting week of tennis that lies ahead.

Episode 45: The Final Countdown-under
We’re counting down to finals weekend in Melbourne (as you could probably tell by the title). There are four people left in the singles draw, but which two can take the title? We talk Brady and her ability to challenge Osaka, and we revisit their thrilling 2020 US Open semifinal match. Osaka’s definitely the one to beat as she’s been taking out top names including Serena Williams in a match that ended emotionally for the 23-time GS Champion. Brady has also been looking in top form, so don't count her out just yet either, as she pulled off an impressive three-set win in her last match. Can Osaka win her fourth or will Brady pull off the upset? Next up on our roster is the men’s final, including the controversial yet nonchalant Daniil Medvedev and AO King classic Novak Djokovic. We know for sure that they're both going to bring it, especially when it comes to a Grand Slam final. Can Djokovic defend his title, or will the firecracker player at the top of his game take him out? We answer all these questions in this episode of Hold on to Your Racket podcast using stats, data, anecdotes, and our classic tennis banter.

Episode 44: "Like a Little Bird"
The magic of a Grand Slam was on full display in the quarterfinals: Stefanos played the match of his life, Naomi and Serena are set to face off in the semifinals, Aslan continues his Cinderella run, and a new WTA slam finalist will emerge. It’s only fitting that fans will return to Melbourne Park for the stellar semifinal matches that are set to be played today and tomorrow. The two of us highlight the two best matches of the round, one for the WTA and one for the ATP, and then take a deep dive into reviewing the quarterfinals and previewing the semifinals. We discuss Djokovic’s talk about a bubble, Serena’s confidence as she inches closer to 24, Russian success, and Jennifer Brady’s hard court dominance. In Hot Headlines, we make sure to update you on some notable news regarding Dylan Alcott, Andy Murray, Sofia Kenin, and Bianca Andreescu. We’re getting closer to crowning a champion, and we can’t wait to see how it all plays out!

The Australian Open (AO) is nearing its final stages, which means there are some thrilling matches to come. In this episode, not only do we recap the Round of 16 and preview each quarterfinal match (both ATP and WTA), but we are also joined by a very special guest. Petros Georgiou, one of our longtime tennis coaches, joins us to discuss his takes on the AO men’s singles matches and his experience working at the US Open these past 10 years, where he has become good friends with quite a few notable ATP players, namely Stefanos Tsitsipas, Frances Tiafoe, Sebastian Korda, and Nick Kyrgios. The three of us are keeping an eye on some players who could possibly challenge Rafole in this tournament, namely Daniil, Grigor, and Petros’ good friend Stefanos. We also quiz him on some unexpected trivia questions about the ATP quarterfinalists. Not to fret, we aren’t leaving the WTA ladies in the dust; the two of us highlight the stunning Osaka vs. Muguruza match and discuss Serena’s triumphant win, Simona’s fighting spirit, Muchova’s breakthrough, Barty’s hometown success, Queen Hsieh Su-Wei, and Jennifer and Jess’ upcoming showdown. We talk Daniil and Andrey’s dramatic childhood matches, the success of American women at this AO, Josefina’s attempts at funny(ish) tennis puns, Osaka’s butterfly blessing, and the plague of abdominal injuries to round out this conversation. So what are you waiting for? Tune in!
