Quality Vs. Compliance | How to get the results you want!

Michael Greenlee and Hannah Vale are joined by Shirley Gamble. She is a Division Director at BAYADA Home Health, which offers Skilled Nursing, Home Health, Hospice, Assistive Care, Habilitation, Behavioral Health and more to patients in 24 states. She started her career in the freelancing market as an editor and proofreader. Her journey within home care began with a non-profit offering home care services in a dozen counties within Missouri. She then moved to a larger organization where she was a Director of Branch Operations for a single-site.

Shirley dispels the assumption that compliance equals quality, which is not the only component to true quality. Quality also includes financial performance, client and employee surveys, and communication with clients and employees. 

Shirley gives useful advice on how to assess and improve processes within a home health agency: care, reimbursement, outcomes, and reporting systems. To tackle service-related problems, administrators must first know there is a problem and use reporting systems to filter results. Training is usually the expected course of action for a service-related concern but there are other important ways to make data meaningful. 

Perhaps most important is that activities should be communicated in writing or via a webcast (and that the response should be formatted and look pleasant to the eye!) It is also important to share the numbers to show the volume of responses and to show those whose input wasn't chosen why.

This Home Health Revealed episode takes place ON THE ROAD! Michael Greenlee and Hannah Vale set up the recording booth in the middle of the Missouri Alliance for Home Care Annual Conference to hear from home health leaders and committee members who are in the trenches of home health. Brooke Kendrick with NorthEast Independent Living of Hannibal Missouri is on the task force at the Missouri Alliance for HomeCare. She discusses leadership challenges that come with staffing and how her agency is taking advantage of state regs that have lowered initial training requirements. She is working to meet increasing demands and get workers in homes quicker.

Her agency has also been able to raise wages to attract and retain staff. Her commitment to the industry is making a difference in the care offered in Missouri.

Carol Hudspeth from MAHC (Missouri Alliance for Home Care) gives insight into the consideration and prep it takes to create the experience for the annual conference. Stephanie Truex from Johnson County Community Health Services is working hard to overcome the discrepancy between reimbursement and staffing wages. She has particular interest in data and the home health value based purchasing model that is impacting her agency.

In the effort to hire and keep talent, when hiring, she looks for some particular attributes that might be surprising.

Peggy Bone with Elara Caring, (who also happened to be our “home room mother” for our conference presentation) has a drive to help her team be the best PEOPLE they can be by proving flexibility within home health. Elara Caring has put talent acquisition and referral programs in place that are helping their agencies across the US.  And if that isn’t enough, she is also star of the “Peggy Road Show!” to check in on clinicians in a more personal manner and give them shouts on the FOND board!

While automation is not new, the surge in technology and the use of additional AI features are greatly impacting the home health industry.

Automation is really just the use of machines with process automation capabilities to help with processes.

Many menial and repetitive tasks are being replaced with robots. With the staff shortage, the use of automation is becoming even more important. AI or Artificial intelligence is also being used. Speech recognition, image recognition, and censors are being used to create processes and make decisions.

Machines or bots are programmed to perform tasks as a human would based on a set of parameters. Built using algorithms or mathematical functions. We use is all the time in social media, Alexa, smart phones, vehicles. It’s a series of inputs and outputs. It can only respond based on its programming.

We have really identified three major parts of the home health process that have been impacted by automation: those are the intake process, the patient care portion, and then the revenue cycle.
