How to Stop Sinning - Part 1 | Romans 6:1-11
How to Stop Sinning - Part 1 | Romans 6:1-11
So where sin abounds grace abounds all the more (5:20-21), so that means we can do anything we want, right? Absolutely not! Paul teaches us that we are united to Christ in his death and will be united with him in a resurrection like his, therefore we are dead to sin and must walk in newness of life. If you are in the neighborhood we would love to have you gather with us on Sundays at 76 Lewis Mill Rd. in Gatesville at 10 a.m. If there is anything we can do for you please reach out and let us know. We’ve Been Justified by Faith, Let us Rejoice! | Romans 5:1-11
We’ve Been Justified by Faith, Let us Rejoice! | Romans 5:1-11
We return to Romans and pick up in chapter 5. Paul spent the first four chapters teaching about man’s unrighteousness and God’s free righteousness given to all who believe in Jesus Christ. In this passage Paul begins teaching us how this newly received righteousness changes the way that we live. In this passage we begin to see the incredible results of our justification and learn that we can rejoice, not only in the world to come but in this life also. In His Name All Oppression Shall Cease | Isaiah 42:1-9
Jesus is God’s Servant who is sent to bring justice to the nations. He is gentle and compassionate. He will not break a bruised reed and He will not quench the faintly burning wick. O how God’s people long for this great day! May the people of God proclaim: Hail the heaven-born PRINCE OF PEACE! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, RISEN WITH HEALING in his wings. We will sing: A thrill of hope- the weary world rejoices, FOR YONDER BREAKS A NEW AND GLORIOUS MORN! Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. CHAINS SHALL HE BREAK, FOR THE SLAVE IS OUR BROTHER, AND IN HIS NAME ALL OPPRESSION SHALL CEASE. The Council’s Decision and Another Road Trip | Acts 15:22-41
The church in Jerusalem sends a letter to the church in Antioch in an effort to bring some resolution to the debate and difficulties caused by the false teachers. In this message we learn that we are free in Christ but we must not flaunt our freedom. We also see that God sometimes uses differences between brothers to accomplish His work and fulfill His purposes. The Gospel + _________ is not the Gospel | Acts 15:1-21
After spending much time with their church family in Antioch, Paul and Barnabas encounter some people from Jerusalem teaching a different gospel. In this message we learn that… The gospel plus anything is not the gospel. People are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. We must not try to maintain our salvation by our works. Jesus doesn’t need our help saving us. The gospel is worth defending. After Paul gets stoned, he and Barnabas head to Derbe to make more disciples. Then they go back to many of the cities they had already visited on their trip. They went to strengthen the churches and ensure they had what they needed to continue in the faith. In this message we learn the following: What is a disciple? How do we continue in the faith? What happens to backsliders? Many tribulations await those who follow Jesus. Healthy biblical churches are led by multiples pastors. They Responded to the Gospel | Acts 13:42-52
Paul just preached an exciting sermon, so exciting that many pursued him during the week and almost the whole city showed up at the synagogue to hear him preach again the following week. The Jews that he first carried the gospel to rejected it and Paul turns his attention toward reaching the Gentiles. In this sermon there are many lessons for faithfulness in ministry today. Looking at the Enemy | Acts 13:4-12
In this passage Saul and Barnabas journey to Cyprus where they face an evil sorcerer that opposes them and their message. Paul, full of the Holy Spirit, looked straight at the sorcerer and spoke to him of the judgment of God that was about to fall upon him. There are many lessons for us in our ministry today. The citizens of Tyre and Sidon began to worship King Herod and the King received it. The citizens where guilty of idolatry and Herod wrongly received worship as if he were God. God’s judgment fell on the King and he was eaten by worms. In this message we learn more about tyranny and how to respond to a tyrant. The Church Learns Something New | Acts 11:1-18
Wonderful things have happened in Caesarea for Cornelius and his household. Now Peter gets back to Jerusalem and has to face criticism for going into a foreigners home and eating with them. Peter answers their criticism by telling them all that had happened. They are persuaded that what Peter did was a good thing and they see God’s good and providential hand in it all. The Gentiles Hear the Gospel OR What is Faith In Jesus Christ? | Acts 10:34-43
Cornelius and Peter are finally together and Cornelius asks Peter to tell him and his household all that they need to hear. The Gentiles are about to believe in Jesus! Peter opens his mouth and tells them all about Jesus Christ and his mercy. In this sermon we learn exactly what it means to believe in Jesus. We learn how our sins are forgiven. We learn how to know if we have believed in Jesus or not. Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is the Savior of all who call on his name in faith. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? God is Doing a New Thing | Acts 10:1-33
God is Doing a New Thing | Acts 10:1-33
God had made it clear long before the events of this passage that He would bless all the nations of the earth (Gen. 12:3). Isaiah had prophesied that God would do a new thing, that He would make a way in the wilderness, that He would make rivers through the desert, and that wild beasts would honor Him (Is. 43:18-20). All of this is being fulfilled in Acts 10. In this chapter God arranges a meeting between Cornelius, a devout Roman centurion, and the apostle Peter. The Gentiles are about to believe the gospel and become part of the family God. This is one of the most important moments in all of church history. The nations are beginning to come to King Jesus. Flee From Sexual Immorality and Expose the Unfruitful Works of Darkness | Eph. 5:1-17
Flee From Sexual Immorality and Expose the Unfruitful Works of Darkness | Eph. 5:1-17
In this third and final message in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, we look into what the scriptures teach about human sexuality and sexual sin. It was God’s plan from the beginning that sex is to be enjoyed by one man and one woman who have entered into the holy covenant of marriage. All sexual activity outside of this is wicked. Those who believe that abortion is a right feel that something has been taken away from them. Now that some states are making it harder to obtain an abortion, the consequences of sexual promiscuity are higher. Depending on where someone lives, if they conceive, it may be much harder to murder their baby and they are more likely to have to carry their child to term and raise their baby. For some, the days of an easy out of parenthood are over. What is the job of the church? We are to not participate in sexual sin and we are to work hard to expose the unfruitful works of darkness in our land (5:11). As we point our flashlights at the evil in our world we are to call people to arise for the dead (5:14) and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ who loved us and gave himself up for us (5:1). Children are an Inheritance from the Lord | Psalm 127
Children are an Inheritance from the Lord | Psalm 127
Children are a gift from God, they are part of our inheritance and the man who has many is blessed. Many people today (Christian and non-Christian alike) do so much to avoid having children and miss out on God’s blessing. Repentance is needed. We have no need to worry that we can’t take care of them for it is the Lord who builds the house. We have no reason to be concerned about having too many for it is the Lord who watches over us. Children are God’s means to conquer evil in our world today and usher in the kingdom of God. Impartiality and the Necessity of Equal Protection
Impartiality and the Necessity of Equal Protection
The evil and unconstitutional 1973 SCOTUS ruling Roe v. Wade has been overturned. This is a huge step in the right direction for our nation but there is much more work to do. All 50 states had the opportunity to defy Roe these past 49 years but they chose to implement incremental legislation that makes it legal to murder their babies. These unjust, iniquitous decrees (Isaiah 10:1) must now be struck down and replaced with laws that provide all people with equal protection from the moment of fertilization until natural death. If our nation fails to do this we will most certainly reap judgment (Jer. 22:5). If you found this message helpful would you reach out to us and let us know? Would you also please go over to abolishabortionnc.com and sign the petition to establish equal protection into the laws of our state? Now that Saul has become a Christian, the church experiences a period of peace. During this time the church multiplied. None of us would be content with a calculator that doesn’t have a multiplication button. Why are we ok with a church that doesn’t have one? How does multiplication work in God’s kingdom? How can the church go beyond merely adding members and see multiplication? The Bible says a day is coming when His glory will fill the earth. The Bible says a day is coming when people from every tongue tribe and nation will worship Jesus. Let’s work together in partnership with our Lord to see this day come! A Tale of Two Cities, One Preacher, Two Assassination Attempts and Two Rescues | Acts 9:19-30
A Tale of Two Cities, One Preacher, Two Assassination Attempts and Two Rescues | Acts 9:19-30
Paul met Jesus recently and is quickly launched into ministry. He is now trying to build up the faith that he once tried to destroy. There are many lessons for church ministry in this passage. The most important lesson is that we should be doing more public proclamation of the gospel followed by conversation that defends the message and persuades others to believe it. If the American Church did what Paul did our nation would be very different. The gospel has spread through Jerusalem and the surrounding region and is about to go to the uttermost ends of the earth. In this passage we see God save Saul. The King Goes to Ethiopia | Acts 8:26-40
Philip’s story continues in this final passage of Acts 8. In this story God gives Philip specific direction about how to move forward in ministry. Two things become clear. First, Philip is a faithful man that is ready and willing to do all that the Lord calls him to do. Secondly, God is fulfilling His plan to bless the nations that He announced long ago. Persecution Spreads the Gospel | Acts 8:1-4
We are returning to our series entitled “What Jesus Started” that we put on pause last summer. Last year we studied Acts 1-7 and this past Sunday we picked up in chapter eight. In this passage we see the gospel of the Kingdom of Jesus spread because of a great persecution. The enemies of the church murdered Stephen, and now the are going house to house throwing Christians in prison. How did this turn out? What was the result? Was God or His people losing control? Not A Private Faith - The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates, Part 2 | 1 Samuel 22:6-23
Not A Private Faith - The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates, Part 2 | 1 Samuel 22:6-23
The Doctrine of the lesser magistrates states that when the superior or higher ranking civil authority makes an unjust/immoral law, policy, or court opinion – the lower or lesser ranking civil authority has both the God-given right and duty to refuse obedience to that superior authority; and if necessary, actively resist the superior authority. This is the second of two sermons on the doctrine of the lesser magistrates. In this sermon we continue to examine the story of King Saul, his son Jonathan and his servant and enemy David. The Doctrine of the lesser magistrates provides a strategy for how the common citizen can engage the local government to stand against wicked legislation and higher authorities that seek to impose their tyrannical will upon the people. Not A Private Faith - The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates, Part 1 | 1 Samuel 19:1-17
Not A Private Faith - The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates, Part 1 | 1 Samuel 19:1-17
Saul was the first King of Israel, Jonathan was his son and Michal was his daughter. David was a shepherd and musician who entered King Saul’s service. The relationships between these four got very, very complicated. In this sermon we see how civil authorities are to interpose against evil, unrighteous civil authorities. In this case, Jonathan had to stand against his father and king because King Saul was trying to kill David. This sermon is the first of two that presents what has become known as the Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates. The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates offers a strategy for God’s people to stand up against tyrants and government overreach. It propels many of God’s people into political engagement and should encourage us to disciple our nation. Not A Private Faith - Tyranny & Non-Compliance | Romans 13:1-7
God created civil government as a very good thing with a very good purpose. As is true of everything in our world, sinful man took a good thing that God has made and corrupted it. What is God’s purpose for civil government? How do God’s people live when the government drives out of its lane and overreaches into the private and personal lives of individuals and institutions? We know we must disobey when government commands what God forbids or forbids what God commands, but are there other times when we should not comply? What about tyrants? How do we spot them? How do we stop them? Not A Private Faith - Examples of Interposition | Exodus 1:8-22
Interposition defined in its broadest sense means protecting someone from the attacks of another. The scripture is filled with commands to do this, two of our favorites are Prov. 24:10-12, “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter” and Jesus’ command to lover our neighbor. In this sermon we see two midwives interpose on behalf of baby boys against a powerful king. We then look at many other examples of interposition from the Bible and history. The blessing of God’s righteousness is available to all people. No one can work and earn the forgiveness of their sin but all types of people are invited to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and have God’s righteousness credited to their account. In this sermon we learn one more reason that we know the law doesn’t save and then we learn about our inheritance. This is the exciting part! Well What About…? | Romans 3:27-31
Well What About…? | Romans 3:27-31
In Romans 3:21-26 Paul makes it clear that God’s righteousness is only received by faith. Paul then anticipates how some who hear this teaching would respond. In this passage Paul asks, "What about boasting?" He asks is God the God of Jews only, or is He the God of everyone? He then says that the law of God is not overthrown, but actually upheld, or established, by the doctrine of justification by faith alone. The applications of these verses in the life of God's people are vast and numerous. Listen with an open heart and an open mind. The Lord will speak through His Spirit as you consider the word of God. Doing Justice Today & the Safe Haven Baby Box | Job 29:11-17
Job was a godly man that served others. He said that he put on righteous deeds and justice like clothing that we wear everyday (29:14). How are God’s people to do justice today? It has to do with giving people what they are due and making wrong things right. In this message we learn more about how we can do this in our world today. Hope Fellowship is working with a few other churches to bring a Safe Haven Baby Box to our community. Empty Religiosity Doesn’t Work! Romans 2:17-29
This week Paul brings up two advantages the Jews had over the other nations and tells them that those two things don’t get them to heaven. God’s law and circumcision don’t make a Jew a child of God. It is something else altogether that is necessary. It is easy to depend on something external to get us to God, but an inward work, accomplished by the Spirit is necessary. Why is this important? Participation. It is what all of God’s people are to do. God has called each of His children to participate in the work of ministry. At Hope Fellowship we are working hard to create a place that encourages participation. Instead of looking at the back of everyone else’s head and other people looking at the back of your head for an hour, it is time that we turn the chairs around and get to know each other. Instead of the pastor being the only one who handles the Bible on Sunday morning, we should all be digging into it and we should do it together. You need the church and the church needs you! No Excuses! Romans 2:1-16
No Excuses! Romans 2:1-16
God doesn’t play favorites and religious people don’t have any excuses for their sin. In fact God judges all people according to the same standard (2:6). Religious people (like the Jews in this passage) and non-religious people (like the Gentiles in Rom. 1) will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. We have no excuses and God doesn’t play favorites. He judges all people the same way. This is good news for us all. God is a God of justice and He does not discriminate. The Wrath of God - Part 2, Why is the World Such a Dark Place? Romans 1:24-32
In Romans 1:24-32 Paul continues to show how God’s wrath is being revealed in our world today. In this passage we see that when mankind rejects God’s revelation in nature, God turns us over to the idolatry and the sin that we desire. The consequences of our rejection of God are awful. Paul closes the passage by making it clear that people know what they are supposed to do and reject it thoroughly. What are we to do in such an awful situation? There is hope, His name is Jesus! This topic that is often ignored by many today is not ignored by the biblical authors. This message is an introduction to God’s just anger and it explains why God is angry. When you listen please heed the warnings given by the Apostle Paul and be sure that you are in right relationship with God. The Power of God - Introduction. Romans 1:1-7
The gospel is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes. Kyle Truman begins our series through Romans by looking at all that Paul had to say in the introduction of his letter in Romans 1:1-7. In Paul’s intro we learn a little bit about him. We also learn some basics about God’s gospel (gospel means good news) and how it changes people. All the ideas mentioned in this passage will be examined much more closely in the months ahead. How The Church Stops Oppression
How The Church Stops Oppression
In this fourth and final sermon in our series entitled “Not A Private Faith,” we explore ways that God’s people (the church) can work together to resist and stop those who oppress others. We start by looking at the story of how Nathan rebuked David in 2 Samuel 12:1-15. We then move on to a number of other passages that command and encourage us to stand and work together to stop oppression. God's Judgment of Oppressive and Unjust Nations
God's Judgment of Oppressive and Unjust Nations
In this third sermon in our four week series entitled "Not A Private Faith," we examine how God judges nations. The truth is that the our nation is ripe for judgment. In fact, there are many indicators that show that we are already coming under God’s judgment. In this sermon we see many passages that show that a nation that allows or participates in oppression will be handed over to oppressors. God does this by sending foreign invaders to wipe out a nation, or by raising up a large government of oppressive leaders from within a nation. We Speak to Wickedness and Work to Stop Oppression
We Speak to Wickedness and Work to Stop Oppression
In this first sermon in our "Not A Private Faith" series, we focus on Isaiah 1:10-20. In this passage God sends Isaiah to speak to wicked rulers and wicked people. He tells them that God is fed up with their empty religious ceremonies while they have innocent blood on their hands. He commands them to repent and to work to bring justice and correct oppression. God then offers His forgiveness and promises to wipe away their sin should they come to Him on His terms. From this passage we learn how to work to stop oppression in our day. It is no small task, but we must do it! Other passages include Provers 24:10-12, 25:26, 31:8-9. Stephen Has Something to Say, Part 4 - Acts 7:51-53
Stephen Has Something to Say, Part 4 - Acts 7:51-53
In these final three verses of Stephen’s long message to the temple authorities, he transitions from the defendant to the prosecutor. In this message on Acts 7:51-53, Stephen does as Peter had done previously and he proclaims the guilt of those who oppose him. They were the ones who killed God’s messengers. They are the ones who do not want to go along with the new thing that God is doing. They are the ones who have rejected the long awaited messiah. In these three verses, Stephen shows us how to point out the guilt of others for the purpose of declaring to them God’s mercies in Jesus. Stephen Has Something to Say, Part 3 - Acts 7:44-50
Stephen has more to say. In this third message on Stephen’s defense before the Jewish leaders in Acts 7:44-53, he spells out clearly what he believes about the Temple. He had been accused of speaking against it and he explains to his accusers that the Temple is not all that they think that it is. In fact God was now dwelling somewhere else entirely. Instead of the Jewish leaders repenting their rage only increases. When Christ died on the cross the temple in Jerusalem was no longer needed. What happened? Why did this happen? What does it mean for us today? All this and more in this third message on Acts 7. Stephen Has Something to Say, Part 2 - Acts 7:17-43
Hope Fellowship exists to provide a safe place for you to grow closer to God. In this second message from Acts 7, the religious leaders hate Stephen and the Jesus that He proclaims and they want to kill Stephen just like they killed Jesus. This episode is actually a sermon on part of a sermon. This week Stephen continues to defend himself against false accusations. In this passage (Acts 7:17-43) Stephen speak of Moses. Moses was a ruler, a redeemer, and a prophet that God sent to save the people and the people rejected Moses back then, just like they are rejecting Stephen and Jesus. In this message we are challenged to make all of our life about Jesus and not about us, not about man-made religion, and not about the work of our hands. Stephen Has Something to Say, Part 1 - Acts 7:1-16
The religious leaders hate Stephen and want him dead. In this message, Stephen defends himself against the false accusations that have been brought against him. Stephen does this by telling the story of the Jewish nation. He starts by sharing how the nation began through Abraham. He then shares how God saved the nation by raising up Joseph and bringing Jacob's family to Egypt. As Stephen tells the story, He uses the Bible that the religious leaders know to lead them to the Jesus that they do not know. Stephen, Jesus, the Prophets, and Us - Acts 6:8-15
Stephen, Jesus, the Prophets, and Us - Acts 6:8-15
What happens to God's people when they faithful deliver God's message to an ungodly world? Opposition. Disputes. False Witnesses. Force. Death. Stephen was ministering in the power and the Spirit of God. Some powerful people opposed him. This is nothing new. The same thing happened to Jesus and the prophets who went before him. The same thing will happen to us today if we speak up outside of the walls of our church building and call people to repentance.  In this sermon, Kyle Truman encourages us to be faithful in calling the community to repentance. We are to expect opposition from some. We are to expect persecution and suffering. We are to recognize that we are in a spiritual battle and there are powerful forces at work to destroy all who would faithfully proclaim the message of God to an ungodly people.  Here is the good news! As we proclaim God's message, we become more like Jesus. If we die because of our proclamation, we become more like Jesus. If we die, we will also rise again. That's right. Jesus rose from the dead, and so will all of God's people who persevere until the end. Growing Pains - Acts 6:1-7
Growing Pains - Acts 6:1-7
Hope Fellowship is a safe place to find real and lasting hope. In Acts 6:1-7 we see the young church in Jerusalem growing very quickly. The apostles were leading the way and as their responsibilities increased they weren’t able to do everything that they used to be able to do. In this passage we see the apostles handle a complaint in a brilliant way. As ministry responsibilities were delegated to others the apostles were able to devote themselves to the ministry of the word and prayer. As they did so the word of God increased, the number of disciples multiplied, and even some of their greatest enemies became part of the church. At Hope Fellowship we are currently implementing some of the principles found in this passage. May God do a good work in our church family as a new chapter begins at Hope Fellowship. How to Overcome Opposition to the Gospel, Part 5 - Acts 5:34-42
Hope Fellowship is a safe place to find real and lasting hope. Luke is taking a lot of time to tell us how things turn out. In our previous episode, we saw that the apostles were thrown into prison and were standing trial for filling the city of Jerusalem with the gospel of Jesus. This week they take a beating and are released. The example they set for us in this passage is amazing. We overcome opposition to the gospel by supernatural, sacrificial, joyful obedience. How to Overcome Opposition to the Gospel, Part 4 - Acts 5:17-33
Hope Fellowship is a safe place to find real and lasting hope. In this teaching from Acts 5:17-33 we see the church and the leaders of the church face great opposition from the local authorities. The passage starts off with the apostles being thrown into prison and it ends with the authorities wanting to kill them.  How does the church move forward in the midst of such opposition? We move forward by continuing to tell the story of the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. As we do this we command faith and repentance, and we extend the offer of the Holy Spirit and forgiveness of sin. Beware of Stinginess and Hypocrisy - Acts 5:1-11
Beware of Stinginess and Hypocrisy - Acts 5:1-11
In Acts 4:32-37 Luke tells us the story of a church family that shares what they have freely with those who are in need. He specifically mentions one man, named Barnabas, who sold a field and gave all the money to the church. In this teaching, Barnabas is contrasted with a couple named Ananias and Sapphira who sold a piece of property and gave part of the proceeds to the church but held back some of it for themselves and told the church that they gave it all. God struck them dead for their sin. In this teaching we examine the dangers of stinginess and hypocrisy. We are encouraged to be generous, and to not pursue earthly treasure, but treasure in heaven. Barnabas Sold a Field - Acts 4:32-37
All the Christians in the early church were of one heart and soul and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common and there was not a needy person among. In this sermon on Acts 4:32-37, Kyle Truman uses the example of the early church to challenge us to think carefully about how we use our wealth and our stuff. This passage and others referenced in this sermon serve as a radical call to incredible generosity.   Hope Fellowship is a safe place to find real and lasting hope. Signs & Wonders in the Church - Then and Now
Signs & Wonders in the Church - Then and Now
So far in the book of Acts we have seen two occasions where miraculous things happened that drew a crowd and provided an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ and His Kingdom. The book of Hebrews says that God does miracles to bear witness to Jesus Christ and His Kingdom (2:4).  The book of Acts records many miracles. How do these miracles expand Jesus' Kingdom? How did they do miracles back then? Are they something that we need to be doing today? If so, how do we do them? In this message Kyle Truman begins to unpack these themes and questions. How to Overcome Opposition to the Gospel, Part 3 - Acts 4:29-31
How to Overcome Opposition to the Gospel, Part 3 - Acts 4:29-31
In this sermon the believers continued to pray and it was no ordinary prayer. In Part 2 of how to overcome opposition to the gospel we saw that they prayed with an understanding that God was sovereign and had predestined the events that led up to that point. In this sermon on the rest of the prayer they cried out to God and asked for two very specific very radical things. If we learn to pray this way the church will look very different and will be a transforming force in our world. If we learn to pray like these believers did we will overcome opposition to the gospel and many will come to love Jesus. Hope Fellowship is a safe place to find real and lasting hope. How to Overcome Opposition to the Gospel, Part 2 - Acts 4:23-27
How to Overcome Opposition to the Gospel, Part 2 - Acts 4:23-27
In our last episode we saw Peter and John get arrested because they were speaking about Jesus. They were released and told to no longer speak in His name. Upon their release they returned to their friends and share with them all that took place. They quickly lifted up their voices together in prayer to God. They begin their prayer by addressing the "Sovereign Lord." What does "Sovereign Lord" mean? In this sermon we will see how a right view of God's sovereignty and His predestination of all things actually spurs us on to effective and extraordinary prayer. If we are going to penetrate the darkness all around us and overcome opposition to the gospel of the Kingdom of God then we must be a people who gather with others regularly to pray to the Sovereign Lord.

How to Overcome Opposition to the Gospel, Part 1 - Acts 4:1-22
How to Overcome Opposition to the Gospel, Part 1 - Acts 4:1-22
In Acts 3 Peter and John healed a man in the name of Jesus and Peter preached to the crowd that gathered around the healed man. In Acts 4:1-22 we read about how the temple authorities responded to Peter's preaching. This was a very frustrating situation for them. They could not deny the healing because so many saw it. They became annoyed and arrested Peter and John and later told them to stop speaking about Jesus.  In this teaching we learn why there is so much opposition to the gospel of the Kingdom of God. We also see how Peter and John overcome this opposition and continue being faithful to Jesus. There are many practical and helpful lessons for us today as we seek to make new disciples in our community. Peter's View of the End Times - Acts 3:20-21
In Acts 3:20-21 Peter says that Jesus will stay in Heaven until the time for restoring all things. This is a much simpler view of the future than what many have been taught. This view differs drastically from the popular view of dispensationalism that is found in the Left Behind series that so many people have read. In this podcast episode Kyle Truman briefly teaches from this passage and then shares how his views on the end times have developed over the past 15-20 years. He then takes questions from the church family about many different topics concerning the end of history and the book of Revelation. God Turns Us From Our Wickedness - Acts 3:17-26
Do you want to change? If so this sermon is for you. In this sermon we look at the second part of Peter's sermon in Acts 3. Last week Peter and John healed a man and the crowd came running. Peter spoke to the crowd and told them that they killed Jesus Christ, the Author of Life. This week we look at Peter's command to repent and turn to God. We see that three good things come to all who repent and we learn that God's blessing is that He turns us from our wickedness. You Killed the Author of Life and God Raised Him From the Dead - Acts 3:1-16
You Killed the Author of Life and God Raised Him From the Dead - Acts 3:1-16
In this sermon from Acts 3:1-16 we see something happen that is very similar to what we saw in Acts 2. God did something incredible that drew a crowd. When Peter saw the crowd he told them all about Jesus. He addressed the entire crowd and told them who Jesus is, what Jesus has done, and how Jesus is the Messiah that they have all been waiting for. In this passage we see that it is only by embracing Jesus by faith and repentance that one can have a relationship with God. We see that we don't get saved by our own power or our own good works. In fact, we are needy beggars who can do nothing for ourselves and that it is God who must bring life into our dead souls. It is our desire at Hope Fellowship to help people who are far from God grow closer to Him. If there is anything we can do for you please reach out and let us know. A New Community - Acts 2:42-47
A New Community - Acts 2:42-47
Last week Peter told everyone to repent and save themselves from a crooked generation. This week, they form a new community, but this community isn't just another community. This is a community of beautiful and faithful devotion. It is a community where the people have a vision of God that leaves them in awe. It is a community where God does incredible things in their midst. It is a community where people let go of so much that they hold on to and share their lives with others. In this sermon on Acts 2:42-47, Kyle Truman challenges all people who claim Jesus as their savior to radically devote themselves to their church family and to anticipate great and incredible things to happen amongst God's people. "What Shall We Do?" Acts 2:37-41
"What Shall We Do?" Acts 2:37-41
Peter just told everyone that Jesus had lived, died, rose from the dead and ascended to the right hand of the Father to reign as King.  His listeners were cut to the heart and asked what they needed to do. Peter's response to their question teaches us much about how the necessity and nature of conversion. In this sermon we also learn much about how we are to instruct others about their need to repent and turn to God. This short passage holds many keys to effective ministry. Should God's people take these lessons to heart we will likely see an incredible outpouring of God's mercy on the lost world around us. It is our desire at Hope Fellowship to help people who are far from God grow closer to Him. If there is anything we can do for you please reach out and let us know. Jesus is Lord and Christ - Acts 2:22-36
Jesus is Lord and Christ - Acts 2:22-36
In this sermon on Acts 2:22-36 brother Hunter Derby shows us how Peter confronted the Jews about their rejection of God's Messiah, Jesus Christ. Many of the people who were present that day had a hand in the crucifixion of Jesus just several weeks prior to this sermon. They killed God's chosen King. They treated the Jesus as a common criminal. But God had a plan and a purpose and no one would thwart the purposes of God. God made Jesus whom they crucified both Lord and Christ and all should bow down before Him. It is our desire at Hope Fellowship to help people who are far from God grow closer to Him. This is What Joel Was Talking About - Acts 2:14-21
God was doing some incredible things and the crowds in Jerusalem were trying to figure out what it all meant. Some were even accusing God’s people of being drunk at 9:00 in the morning! In this sermon from Acts 2:14-21 we see that what God is doing is what the prophet Joel had predicted hundreds of years prior to this event. God is now pouring out His Spirit on all people and we are now in the days where anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

The Spirit Comes - Acts 2:1-13
The Spirit Comes - Acts 2:1-13
In this sermon from Acts 2:1-13, we see God send His Holy Spirit just as He promised that He would. In this passage the Spirit comes with the sound of a mighty rushing wind and divided tongues of fire and He rests upon the 120 who were waiting for Him. It was then that they began proclaiming the wonderful works of God in many different languages that they had never spoken before. This story is rich in symbolism and imagery that speak much about the new covenant and the church's mission. Most importantly we see that the Spirit is necessary if we are going to be witnesses to the good news of Jesus and His Kingdom. It is our desire at Hope Fellowship to help people who are far from God grow closer to Him. If there is anything we can do for you please reach out and let us know. The Church Treasurer Goes to Hell - Acts 1:15-26
The Church Treasurer Goes to Hell - Acts 1:15-26
As we continue to learn what Jesus started in the book of Acts we come to Acts 1:15-26 where Peter leads the way in selecting Judas Iscariot's replacement. Judas had committed suicide due to the guilt he had when he betrayed Jesus. In this passage Peter seeks to be obedient to the scriptures and leads the 120 believers under his care in a process to select Judas' replacement.  The life of Judas serves as a warning to the double minded man who has an appearance of godliness but does not depart from lawlessness.  Additional scriptures include Ps. 69:25, Ps. 109:8, Prov. 16:33, Matt 7:21-23, Matt 7:13-14, and 2 Tim. 2:19.

What is Jesus doing Now? - Acts 1:9-11
In this sermon we look at Acts 1:9-14. In this we see Jesus ascend into the sky into the heavens where He is seated at the right hand of God. What does this mean for us now? How does this affect how we come to God? How we do ministry? How are we to think of Jesus' supremacy over all things and His Kingdom?  It is our desire at Hope Fellowship to help people who are far from God grow closer to Him. The Baptism & Power of The Holy Spirit, Acts 1:4-8
In this sermon from Acts 1:4-8 we learn about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit's continual empowerment for ministry. In this sermon we engage the following questions: Who is the Holy Spirit? What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Does the baptism of the Holy Spirit mean I have to speak in tongues? How did the Old Testament talk about the Holy Spirit? What does the Holy Spirit and the Kingdom of God have to do with each other? How do we receive the power of the Holy Spirit? What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? What happened when people were filled with the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts? What does it mean to be a witness? What is God's plan for the uttermost ends of the earth? It is our desire at Hope Fellowship to help people who are far from God grow closer to Him. Go Change the World!
Go Change the World!
This is our second week going through the book of Acts. As we do this we are beginning to see that Jesus has started something VERY, VERY, VERY BIG that will transform the world.  In this sermon based on Acts 1:2 we learn that Jesus gave his disciples commands before He ascended to the Father. We go on to look at those commands individually. As we do so we get a better idea of what is ahead for Jesus’ followers in that day and also what it is that He wants for us in 2021. The passages covered are John 20:26-27, John 20:19-22, Luke 24:46-49, Mark 16:14-15, Matthew 28:16-20 and Matthew 10:24-25.    It is our desire at Hope Fellowship to help people who are far from God grow closer to Him. Jesus Christ is the Word of God and He Dwelled Among Us
Jesus Christ is the Word of God and He Dwelled Among Us
On this 2nd Sunday of Christmas we turn our attention towards the Apostle John's words found in John 1:1-14. Jesus Christ is the Word of God who was with God for all eternity prior to His conception in the virgin Mary and His entry into this world. He is also the Word of God who is God and He took on flesh and dwelled among us and showed us His glory. These truths are mysterious and beyond our limited human logic and understanding. While this is true, these mysterious truths demand our attention, and when we meditate on these mysterious truths we are changed by our God in a radical way.   It is our desire at Hope Fellowship to help people who are far from God grow closer to Him. If there is anything we can do for you please reach out and let us know. Ep. 4 Let Heaven & Nature Sing

Ep. 2 Let Heaven & Nature Sing
Ep. 2 Let Heaven & Nature Sing
The Bible says that Jesus is going to restore to Himself all things. What does that mean? How will it happen? In this teaching we examine Romans 8:18-25 and we see that our present sufferings in this broken world are not worth comparing to the glory that is going to be revealed in the world to come. Just as God has already begun liberating setting sinners free from the curse of sin He has plans to lift the curse that all of creation is groaning under. Jesus' coming is something for all of God's people to look forward to.

"We've Been Faithful and God isn't Showing Up!"
The Valley of the Shadow of Death is real. In this sermon on Psalm 44 we see God's people faithfully walking with God and suffering because of it. This Psalm is their prayer in the midst of great affliction that the Lord has brought upon them. How are we supposed to think about suffering for Jesus? How are we to pray when we are suffering? How is it ok for God to afflict His faithful people? We dive into all these questions and much more in this sermon.

Repent or Perish
Repent or Perish
These words "repent or perish" rolled off the tongue of Jesus on multiple occasions while He was alive. In this sermon on Psalm 7, Hunter Derby shows us how this works out for those who refuse to come to God. Last week we saw God's heart toward his people as they live in a broken world. This week we see God's heart toward those that do not come to God in this life. In this Psalm, King David shows us that God is angry and that He judges His enemies with righteous judgment. May we be like those who give to the Lord thanks due to his righteousness and sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High (v17).

Goodness and Mercy Follow God's People
In this third message in our series "We Walk Through the Valley of the Shadow of Death," Joe Pierce leads us through Psalm 23. In this passage we see God's incredibly tender care for His people. From this passage we see that God leads us as a shepherd leads his sheep. We see that we do not have to fear evil even when it is all around us. We see that God provides for and blesses his people even when there are enemies all around. The first few minutes of this message were not recorded.

Abraham Was Gathered To His People - Gen. 25:1-11
Abraham lived a good long life and died at the age of 175 years. The Bible says that when he died he "was gathered to his people."  What does this mean? How are we to live in light of this? How are we to live in light of what we have learned from this series through the life of Abraham?

Isaac Gets Married
God fulfills His promise to Abraham by bringing Isaac a wife. In this sermon from Gen. 24:1-67, we see God leading Abraham's servant to find a wife for Isaac. As we see this we learn how God works through His providence in our daily affairs to fulfill His purposes. There is much practical wisdom for daily life throughout this message. It is our hope that you will learn how to recognize God's leading in the decisions that you have to make everyday.  The first few minutes of the sermon after the discussion were not recorded.

Sarah Dies and We Are Strangers
Sarah Dies and We Are Strangers
In Gen. 23 Abraham's wife Sarah breathes her last. In this passage we see the necessity of weeping and grieving. Most of us don't do this too well. We also see that even after living in the land for 62 years Abraham still identified as an outsider. In securing a burial plot for his wife it was clear that Abraham and his family were foreigners. The rest of the Bible elaborates on this idea of Abraham's descendants being foreigners in this world. In this sermon we explore Heb. 11:8-16 to see how we are to live as sojourners looking to a city whose designer and make is God.

God Judges All People By What He Sees Them Do
God Judges All People By What He Sees Them Do
Look at that title again. Is that really true? The Bible teaches that we are saved by faith alone, not by what we do. If that is so, then why does God judge people according to what He sees them do? This question arose when we explored Gen. 22:12 which reads "Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me." Wasn't Abraham already saved by faith? If this is true, then why did God say what He said in Gen. 22:12? In this sermon we see that there is no inconsistency or contradiction in these things. This is just one of those situations where our thoughts and ways are different from Gods. His ways are always higher (Is. 55:8-9).

What is God's Purpose?
In this teaching we explore Gen. 22:15-24. In the previous passage God told Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a human sacrifice. Abraham obeyed and God told him to stop just before Abraham put his son to death. God responds by swearing an oath that He will bring blessing to Abraham and to all the nations of the world. God Gives His Righteousness to Sinners
God Gives His Righteousness to Sinners
In this sermon we explore Genesis 15:1-6 and we dive deep into what it means that God granted Abram His righteousness when Abram believed the promise of God. Later on in Biblical history the apostle Paul would use an idea from this passage to show that the only way that anyone can have a relationship with God is to receive God's very own perfect righteousness by faith.  As you listen to this ask yourself the following questions: What is faith and what does God do for us when we believe in Jesus? How good does someone have to be for God to accept them? How hard do you have to work to get to heaven? Do you have a relationship with God? Why do we love God and do things for Him? There is a lot of good news shared in this message. Dive deep into it and contact us if you have any questions. You can visit us at hopegatesville.com and email us at hopegatesville@gmail.com.

"Abraham Didn't Believe God" or "How to be a Very Bad Husband"
In last week's teaching God commanded Abram to go to a new land and He made many promises to Abram. In this week's teaching from Gen. 12:10-20 we see Abram leave the land and forget the promises. Abram was just like us, a big liar! In this teaching Kyle Truman encourages us to tell the truth at all times and to examine our fears and motives that often lead us into sin. We also learn that Abram had a whole family of liars too!

How Long O Lord? Week 3 - Habakkuk 2:4-20
Habakkuk complained to God, God spoke. Habakkuk complained again, God meets him where he is at and speaks again. In this exploration of Habakkuk 2:4-20 We see that God has a plan and a purpose in His dealings with the governments and world powers of the day. As we look at what we have seen in Habakkuk 1-2 we realize that God is sovereignly overseeing and directing the affairs of the universe perfectly and in His mercy He cares for His beloved people and directs them through challenging days.

In this teaching we explore the first 11 verses of Habakkuk's prophecy. Habakkuk lived 2,600 years ago in a time where there were very few people who were walking with God. This grieved Habakkuk and he prayed and asked God how long He would allow the evil to continue. God answered Habakkuk's prayer/complaint but Habakkuk still wasn't satisfied.  Don't stop at this teaching, it gets better on the next episode!

Ekklesia - Deliver that Church Member to Satan? Week 8
Sometimes church members don't act like church people should. As we learned last week Christians are called to live a life worthy of the gospel of Christ, but what should happen when that doesn't happen? In this teaching Kyle Truman leads us through 1 Corinthians 5 where the Apostle Paul has to address a situation where a church member is participating in gross sin and the church is proud of it! He tells the church family to deliver this man to Satan. What does that mean? Should we still do this today? All of these questions and many more are answered in this teaching.

Ekklesia - Church Members Must Live a Life Worthy of the Gospel of Christ, Week 7
In Philippians 1:27-2:11 Paul instructs the Christians in Philippi to live a life that is worthy of the gospel of Christ. What doe that mean? We are to stand strong, to strive together, to be fearless of our opponents, and to do all of this in unity. There is much in this passage about how the church is to walk through sufferings. We live in a day and age where things are very quickly changing. For many generations American Christians have been able to call themselves a Christian without suffering or having to pay a personal price for their profession. We are in a new season where being a Christian will cost us, how are we to navigate these changes? In this teaching Pastor Kyle will show us how we are to move forward through difficult days that may be ahead.

Ekklesia - What is a Pastor? an Elder? and a Shepherd? Week 4
In this teaching we explore the development of the position and role of the elder in the early church. An elder is a shepherd of God's people. The word "pastor" means "shepherd." Elders are pastors, pastors are elders, pastors and elders are shepherds. What does this mean for how are churches are structured?  Passages covered in this teaching are Acts 20:17-38, Eph 4:11-12, Jer 3:15, 1 Tim 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Peter 5:1-2, and Psalm 23.

Ekklesia - How do the Members and Leaders of the Church Work Together to get Things Done? Week 3
Ekklesia - How do the Members and Leaders of the Church Work Together to get Things Done? Week 3
In this teaching from Acts 6:1-6 we see how the young church in Jerusalem had to change some things so that they could fulfill their responsibilities and accomplish Jesus' mission. In this teaching we see that while the local church is the family of God it also has an institutional or organizational element to it. We must embrace this dynamic that God has created within His family. We learn how to handle complaints and how church leaders can work together with church members to meet needs within the church. In this passage we see the importance of roles within the church and how responsibilities should be delegated. What we see in this passage is a great example of the apostles/church leaders using the keys of the kingdom (mentioned last week) to build the Kingdom of Heaven.

Ekklesia - Jesus Will Build His Church, Week 2
Ekklesia - Jesus Will Build His Church, Week 2
In this teaching we examine what Jesus said about the church. The Bible only records him using the word "church" three times. Jesus makes it clear that the church is His idea and His project and He plans to build the church through His people.  As we explore Matt 16:13-20 and Matt 18:15-20 we see that Jesus hands over authority to the apostles, to subsequent church leaders and to all the members of the church. He will build His church and no plan of Hell will prevent Him from doing what He set out to do! He wants you to be a part of this building project, will you participate?

Ekklesia - We are Family, Week 1
In this first teaching on the ekklesia we examine 2 Cor 6:14-7:1 and a number of other passages and discover that the church is commonly referred to as a family. How does this change how we think about the church? How does this challenge our assumptions and experience? Although the church has an institutional/organizational element to it, we must realize that we are much more of a family than most of us realize.

The Way of Love - Episode 11, 1 Cor 13:1-7
So God is love and His love flows into us so that we can love others. In this teaching we explore what love does. We ask the questions "What does it look like?" "What does it do?" "Are there any counterfeits to love?"  1 Cor 13 teaches that love is not controlling, it is not suffocating, it is often not convenient, love does not keep score and it let's go. Love is not manipulative or selfish. Love doesn't make life about us but about God and other people. In this teaching we examine what modern day psychology calls codependency and we examine the motives that operate in our hearts. And by the end, we look straight into the face of God Himself and we consider His awesome love poured out for us at the cross.

In this passage John tells us to do something that is not very popular today. He wants us to test the spirits, the messages, the preacher who are in our world making their voice heard. We are to ask the question "Do they confess/acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah and that He has come in the flesh. We must not believe every spirit, if we do we are in great danger. The content of John's letter is very applicable to many modern day questions and assumptions that many people in our world are asking today.  In this passage the Apostle John is helping his readers figure out how to sort through some of the confusing things that they were being taught be different groups of people. John issues several tests that people should submit themselves to to see if they have a relationship with God or not. John is telling the people that what they say and confess must be in line with how they live their lives. Jesus is Risen!
Jesus is Risen!
Thomas Arnold who is the chair of modern history at Oxford says  “I have been used for many years to study the histories of other times, and to examine and weigh the evidence of those who have written about them, and I know of no one fact in the history of mankind which is proved by better and fuller evidence of every sort, to the understanding of a fair inquirer, than the great sign which God has given us that Christ died and rose again from the dead.”  That is the good news! Jesus didn't stay dead. He was the perfect sacrifice for the sin of man. On Sunday morning He rose from the dead, conquering death, sin and the devil. Will you believe on the risen Lord Jesus and be saved? This teaching is based on Mark 16:1-8 and Romans 2:6-10
