A Lesson on Prayer - Gen. 18:16-33

Jesus is Risen and You Have a Ministry!
Paul spent 57 verses showing us that Jesus has risen from the dead. He then tells us how it should affect our lives. He call us to action. He says "Therefore my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." This teaching is a call to action. We are the church, Jesus has saved us and we are to grow strong and do the work of Christ in our world.

Do Justice, Love Kindness, Walk Humbly With Your God
So what does that mean? What does it mean to "do justice"? What does it mean to "love kindness"? What does it mean to "walk humbly with your God"? Doing justice has to do with giving someone their due. What are the implications of this in our world today? How should we respond to the murder of George Floyd? And most importantly? What hope do we have that things will get better?

How to Welcome Other People When You Don't Agree With Them
This week, we took a brief break from 1 Corinthinians so we could hear what the Lord wanted to tell us in Romans 14:1-15:7. In this passage we are reminded to honor and extend grace to our brothers and sisters in the Lord on matters of opinion. Differences of opinions need not cause division, but rather can be a source of learning and can foster deeper relationships.

God Gives His Righteousness to Sinners
In this sermon we explore Genesis 15:1-6 and we dive deep into what it means that God granted Abram His righteousness when Abram believed the promise of God. Later on in Biblical history the apostle Paul would use an idea from this passage to show that the only way that anyone can have a relationship with God is to receive God's very own perfect righteousness by faith.  As you listen to this ask yourself the following questions: What is faith and what does God do for us when we believe in Jesus? How good does someone have to be for God to accept them? How hard do you have to work to get to heaven? Do you have a relationship with God? Why do we love God and do things for Him? There is a lot of good news shared in this message. Dive deep into it and contact us if you have any questions. You can visit us at hopegatesville.com and email us at hopegatesville@gmail.com.

"Abraham Didn't Believe God" or "How to be a Very Bad Husband"
In last week's teaching God commanded Abram to go to a new land and He made many promises to Abram. In this week's teaching from Gen. 12:10-20 we see Abram leave the land and forget the promises. Abram was just like us, a big liar! In this teaching Kyle Truman encourages us to tell the truth at all times and to examine our fears and motives that often lead us into sin. We also learn that Abram had a whole family of liars too!

How Long O Lord? Week 3 - Habakkuk 2:4-20
Habakkuk complained to God, God spoke. Habakkuk complained again, God meets him where he is at and speaks again. In this exploration of Habakkuk 2:4-20 We see that God has a plan and a purpose in His dealings with the governments and world powers of the day. As we look at what we have seen in Habakkuk 1-2 we realize that God is sovereignly overseeing and directing the affairs of the universe perfectly and in His mercy He cares for His beloved people and directs them through challenging days.

How Long Oh Lord? Week 2 - Habakkuk 1:12-2:3
Sometimes we don't like what is going on in the world today. Habakkuk sure didn't! He was bold enough to take his complaint to God and then he was quiet and listened to what God would say to Him. What complaints or frustrations do you have with God? In this teaching you will learn what to do with your frustrations and what to do while you wait for things to change.

How Long Oh Lord? Week 1 - Habakkuk 1:1-11
In this teaching we explore the first 11 verses of Habakkuk's prophecy. Habakkuk lived 2,600 years ago in a time where there were very few people who were walking with God. This grieved Habakkuk and he prayed and asked God how long He would allow the evil to continue. God answered Habakkuk's prayer/complaint but Habakkuk still wasn't satisfied.  Don't stop at this teaching, it gets better on the next episode!

Ekklesia - Restore and Forgive that Man! Week 9
Last week the Apostle Paul told the church in Corinth to deliver a man to Satan and remove him from the congregation. What happened to that man? Did the church do what Paul commanded? In this teaching Kyle Truman will attempt to answer these questions and then will turn to John 20:19-23 which may be the most significant story of forgiveness and restoration in the Bible.

Ekklesia - Deliver that Church Member to Satan? Week 8
Sometimes church members don't act like church people should. As we learned last week Christians are called to live a life worthy of the gospel of Christ, but what should happen when that doesn't happen? In this teaching Kyle Truman leads us through 1 Corinthians 5 where the Apostle Paul has to address a situation where a church member is participating in gross sin and the church is proud of it! He tells the church family to deliver this man to Satan. What does that mean? Should we still do this today? All of these questions and many more are answered in this teaching.

Ekklesia - Church Members Must Live a Life Worthy of the Gospel of Christ, Week 7
In Philippians 1:27-2:11 Paul instructs the Christians in Philippi to live a life that is worthy of the gospel of Christ. What doe that mean? We are to stand strong, to strive together, to be fearless of our opponents, and to do all of this in unity. There is much in this passage about how the church is to walk through sufferings. We live in a day and age where things are very quickly changing. For many generations American Christians have been able to call themselves a Christian without suffering or having to pay a personal price for their profession. We are in a new season where being a Christian will cost us, how are we to navigate these changes? In this teaching Pastor Kyle will show us how we are to move forward through difficult days that may be ahead.

Ekklesia - How do Church Members Relate to Their Leaders? Week 6
In this teaching Pastor Kyle looks at what the scripture says to church members about how they are to relate to the leaders in the church. Scriptures covered include 1 Thes 5:12-13, 1 Cor 16:15-18, Heb 13:7, Heb 13:17, 1 Peter 5:1-7.

Ekklesia - How Are Pastors/Elders to Pastor/Elder? Week 5
If you have ever been hurt by a leader in the church then this teaching is for you. In this teaching we look at the Apostle Peter's instruction to pastors/elders in 1 Pet 5:2-3. Pastors/elders are to lead in a way that is not domineering or authoritarian but they are to be examples to the church family.

Ekklesia - What is a Pastor? an Elder? and a Shepherd? Week 4
In this teaching we explore the development of the position and role of the elder in the early church. An elder is a shepherd of God's people. The word "pastor" means "shepherd." Elders are pastors, pastors are elders, pastors and elders are shepherds. What does this mean for how are churches are structured?  Passages covered in this teaching are Acts 20:17-38, Eph 4:11-12, Jer 3:15, 1 Tim 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Peter 5:1-2, and Psalm 23.

Ekklesia - How do the Members and Leaders of the Church Work Together to get Things Done? Week 3
In this teaching from Acts 6:1-6 we see how the young church in Jerusalem had to change some things so that they could fulfill their responsibilities and accomplish Jesus' mission. In this teaching we see that while the local church is the family of God it also has an institutional or organizational element to it. We must embrace this dynamic that God has created within His family. We learn how to handle complaints and how church leaders can work together with church members to meet needs within the church. In this passage we see the importance of roles within the church and how responsibilities should be delegated. What we see in this passage is a great example of the apostles/church leaders using the keys of the kingdom (mentioned last week) to build the Kingdom of Heaven.

Ekklesia - Jesus Will Build His Church, Week 2
In this teaching we examine what Jesus said about the church. The Bible only records him using the word "church" three times. Jesus makes it clear that the church is His idea and His project and He plans to build the church through His people.  As we explore Matt 16:13-20 and Matt 18:15-20 we see that Jesus hands over authority to the apostles, to subsequent church leaders and to all the members of the church. He will build His church and no plan of Hell will prevent Him from doing what He set out to do! He wants you to be a part of this building project, will you participate?

Ekklesia - We are Family, Week 1
In this first teaching on the ekklesia we examine 2 Cor 6:14-7:1 and a number of other passages and discover that the church is commonly referred to as a family. How does this change how we think about the church? How does this challenge our assumptions and experience? Although the church has an institutional/organizational element to it, we must realize that we are much more of a family than most of us realize.

The Way of Love - Episode 11, 1 Cor 13:1-7
So God is love and His love flows into us so that we can love others. In this teaching we explore what love does. We ask the questions "What does it look like?" "What does it do?" "Are there any counterfeits to love?"  1 Cor 13 teaches that love is not controlling, it is not suffocating, it is often not convenient, love does not keep score and it let's go. Love is not manipulative or selfish. Love doesn't make life about us but about God and other people. In this teaching we examine what modern day psychology calls codependency and we examine the motives that operate in our hearts. And by the end, we look straight into the face of God Himself and we consider His awesome love poured out for us at the cross.

The Way of Love - Episode 10, 1 John 3:23-4:6
In this passage John tells us to do something that is not very popular today. He wants us to test the spirits, the messages, the preacher who are in our world making their voice heard. We are to ask the question "Do they confess/acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah and that He has come in the flesh. We must not believe every spirit, if we do we are in great danger. The nature of the Holy Spirit is that He always points to Jesus and that it is only through the Holy Spirit that anyone can confess Jesus.

The Way of Love - Episode 3, 1 John 2:3-11
The content of John's letter is very applicable to many modern day questions and assumptions that many people in our world are asking today.  In this passage the Apostle John is helping his readers figure out how to sort through some of the confusing things that they were being taught be different groups of people. John issues several tests that people should submit themselves to to see if they have a relationship with God or not. John is telling the people that what they say and confess must be in line with how they live their lives. He is writing to bring clarity to the message of Jesus and how that message should change a person's life.

The Way of Love - Episode 2, 1 John 2:1-2
When you sin what do you do with it? Most people do one of two things when they sin. They either disregard it and don't worry about  it or they are cast down with guilt and shame and are unable to move on in life. How are we supposed to handle our failures?  In this teaching from 1 John 2:1-2 Kyle Truman sheds some light on this question.

In this teaching from Matt 6:5-9 and Matt 7:7-11 Pastor Kyle breaks down some of the basics of prayer. In these passages Jesus points out several ways that our prayers miss the mark. Lord, Teach Us to Pray - Week 1
Someone asked me recently "Is there a right way to pray?" The answer to that question is "Yes!" In this teaching Kyle Truman takes us through Luke 18:1-8 where Jesus tells us a story about a woman who is the victim of great injustice. Jesus tells us this story because he wants us to understand that we ought always to pray and not lose heart.

The Last Thing that Jesus Did
In this teaching Pastor Kyle unpacks Mark 16:9-20. This passage contains the account of two different appearances of Jesus after He rose from the dead. When the people who saw Him told others no one believed them. Jesus soon showed up and set the record straight.  What Jesus says after this changes everything!

Jesus is Risen!
Thomas Arnold who is the chair of modern history at Oxford says  “I have been used for many years to study the histories of other times, and to examine and weigh the evidence of those who have written about them, and I know of no one fact in the history of mankind which is proved by better and fuller evidence of every sort, to the understanding of a fair inquirer, than the great sign which God has given us that Christ died and rose again from the dead.”  That is the good news! Jesus didn't stay dead. He was the perfect sacrifice for the sin of man. On Sunday morning He rose from the dead, conquering death, sin and the devil. Will you believe on the risen Lord Jesus and be saved? This teaching is based on Mark 16:1-8 and Romans 2:6-10

Jesus is Dead
Jesus breathed his last and was buried. When Jesus died the veil in the temple was torn in two. It was no longer needed, He (Jesus) actually became the veil (curtain). This means that you no longer had to be an important religious leader to experience the presence of God. This means that all people can know God, even the Roman Centurion, women, and rich people. This teaching is based on Mark 15:34-47 and Hebrews 10:19-22

Jesus is Dying
The guards, the bystanders, the religious leaders, and the other criminals all mock Jesus. Jesus tries to carry His cross to the hill but is unable. The nails are driven through His hands and His feet. He suffers. There is darkness over the whole land from noon to 3 p.m. In this teaching from Mark 16-33 Pastor Kyle examines the sufferings of Jesus. His body was broken, His blood was poured out for us.

Friday Morning
It is Friday morning. Jesus will die on the cross this afternoon. In Mark 15:1-15 Jesus stands before the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate. Pilate finds no guilt in Jesus, but the people want Him dead. Pilate decides to play politics. He lets a murderer go and sentences Jesus to death on a cross. In this passage Jesus’ sufferings increase. He will soon breathe his last, experiencing the full wrath of God against the sin of man.

What to do When You Realize That You Screwed it all up!
Peter was one of Jesus’ closest followers. In this episode we learn the story of how someone like Peter quickly gave in to fear and pressure to the point where he denied even knowing Jesus. This stuff really does happen. We all do it. How do we handle things when we mess it all up? What is the right way to move on when we realize how far we have fallen away from God? There is good news for people like Peter, for you and for me, in this teaching from Mark 14:66-72 you will learn what to do when you realize how far you have fallen.

Jesus is Arrested and Found Guilty
In this episode Pastor Ray Brickhouse takes us through Mark 14:43-65 where Jesus is arrested and goes on trial before the religious leaders. In this passage Jesus tells the leaders that He is the Christ and that they will see Him seated at the right hand of God and returning with the clouds of heaven. At this the leaders condemned Him and began to beat Him. Pastor Ray asks us to consider our own part in sending Jesus to the cross. We must see that Jesus suffered on our behalf. He became sin for us so that we may become the righteousness of God! There is much good news in this passage. Jesus suffered greatly on our behalf and therefore we have hope!

Jesus is in Charge and He is Changing Everything
It's the day before Jesus is crucified, He has His disciples prepare the Passover meal, only this time, it's not the Passover meal. This last supper that Jesus has with His disciples is something that Christians are still doing today and it is all about Jesus and what He has done for us in the new covenant. Please listen in and see how Jesus makes Himself available to us as we meet Him at His table. This teaching is from Mark 14:12-25.

Blank Check
A lady poured over $25,000 worth of perfume on Jesus. In a radical display of sacrifice she let go of something that was precious and costly to her and her family. This display of love and gratitude shows the worth that she placed upon her Lord.  In this teaching on Mark 14:1-11 Pastor Kyle challenges us to surrender our lives completely to Jesus. God is calling us to gaze upon the face of Jesus and to make Him our greatest treasure!

God's Presence, Forgiveness, and Sacrifice
In this fifth teaching from the Old Testament we see how God was sovereignly preparing His people for Jesus the Messiah. In 1 Kings 8:22-53 King Solomon leads the people in a prayer of dedication as they begin worship at the new Temple. In this teaching there are many lessons on prayer. You will see how God dwells with us and in Heaven. You will also see how God forgives sin and why sacrifice is necessary if we are going to know God.

In this teaching Pastor Kyle examines Leviticus 16 and the idea of atonement to prepare us for what is about to happen.

God Provides a Sacrifce
In this teaching we see that God provides the sacrifice that He requires. In Genesis 22:1-14, God commands Abraham to offer his only son Isaac as a sacrificial act of worship. Abraham obediently responds to God's command and at just the right time God intervenes, He provides the sacrifice that He requires and gives Abraham his son back from the dead.

Discipleship (Ministry) doesn't have to be complicated!
In this teaching Pastor Kyle shows what it means to make disciples. American church goers have grown up in a church culture where most of us have been led to believe that doing ministry is very complicated. NOT TRUE! Acts 14:19-23 shows us a simple pattern for doing ministry and bringing the gospel and the kingdom of God wherever we go.

"Keep it Simple!" or "How to Have Better Relationships"
In this episode Kyle Truman teaches on Mark 12:28-34. Jesus' teaching in this passage makes the Christian life much simpler than most of us make it out to be. Jesus also teaches us how to have healthy relationships. In this passage a scribe asks Jesus another question. He wants to know what the greatest commandment is. Jesus answered the scribe and the scribe had to agree. Jesus was pleased with the scribes response and told him that he was not far from the Kingdom of God. Other passages covered in this episode include Deut 6:4-5, Lev 19:18, 1 Cor 13, Eph 5:28-29, and Matt 5:43-48.

In this episode Chuck Hewitt takes us through Mark 12:13-27. In this passage the Pharisees, the Herodians and the Sadducees make numerous attempts to trick Jesus into saying something that will incriminate Himself or alienate Him from the crowds of people that are following Him. Jesus is not fooled by their malice but answers their questions wisely and powerfully. Topics that are addressed include government, taxes, kingdoms, the scriptures and God's power.

The Day Jesus Got Mad
In this episode we discover a side of Jesus that we don't think about very often. Mark tells us a story about a fig tree that Jesus saw from a distance when He was hungry. He went up to it to get something to eat and when there was no fruit on it He cursed it and it withered. After that He rolled into the temple and turned over some tables because people were out of line. The had made the temple a market when it was supposed to be a house of prayer for all types of people. This teaching is from Mark 11:12-19.

Exhort One Another!
In this episode we dive into Hebrews 3:12-14. In this short passage there are two commands, a warning and a promise. God is calling us to be sure that we don't fall away from Him and also that we work hard to make sure no one else in the church family does either! The writer of Hebrews expects every member of the church to participate in the ministry, not just the pastor! The writer of Hebrews also says that we have come to share in Christ only if we hold our original confidence to the end! What does that mean? Are you saved if you don't? What about the phrase "once saved always saved?" Is that true? Additional passages covered are 2 Cor 13:5, Rom 14:19, Rom 15:1, Rom 15:14, Eph 4:11-16, Eph 4:25, Col 3:16, 1 Thes 4:18, 1 thes 5:11-15, 1 Cor 14:26, Matt 10:22, Col 1:21, 1 Cor 15:1-2, Phil 1:6, Phil 2:12-13, 1 Thes 5:23, 1 Pet 1:3-5

Think! It is Not too Hard for you!
God's words and thoughts have been given to us in the Bible. God commands us to love Him with all of our mind and to think about what is written. When we do, God turns the light on for us so that we can know Him and His ways. In this sermon Pastor Kyle shows what God requires of you, some of the dangers of not heeding God's command, and he also identifies some of the excuses, or reasons, we have for not being diligent students of the Bible. Main passages: Deut 30:11-14, 2 Tim 2:7 Other passages: Deut 6:4-7, Matt 22:36, Col 3:16, Acts 17:10-12, Ps 17:7, Ps 119:130, 2 Pet 3:15-18, Rom 16:17-18, Acts 4:13, Ps 1:1-3, Josh 1:8, Matt 7:24, John 5:39, Luke 24:27
