The Message of Step Twelve

The Message of Step Twelve

The powerful message of Step Twelve becomes quite clear when we look at what the founders of The Twelve Steps included for Step One and then what they end with in Step Twelve. The Twelve Steps of recovery and the message of the Bible do not leave us without hope or without a solution, and amazingly they both point to the same solution.

Step Twelve of Recovery: Had a Spiritual Awakening

In many ways Step Twelve summarizes all of the Twelve Steps of Recovery and also gives a final charge as well. It is interesting to note what AA and NA chose to include in this final step of the Twelve Steps of Recovery, which is to focus on a "spiritual awakening" as being key to recovery.

Mini-Devotional: What God Says About You

Today's podcast is a message inspired by our brand new granddaughter, Maria Bea Schmalhofer, and is a message of four Bible truths of "What God Says About You". These four basic Bible truths present a perspective that is very different from the message of popular culture, but these four truths of "What God Says About You" can make a dramatic impact in your life and help you to be successful in recovery and even over any struggle of life.

Step Ten of Recovery: Continued to Take Personal Inventory

Step Ten of Recovery: Continued to Take Personal Inventory

Step Ten instructs us to continue on growing in our recovery and in our faith by daily taking a personal inventory of our wrongs and to promptly and humbly admit them. But, while this is an important process in our recovery, to properly take a daily personal inventory, requires that we ask God to be the one directing the searching of our personal inventory.

Step Seven of Recovery: Humbly Ask God

Step Seven of Recovery: Humbly Ask God

Here in Step Seven we humbly ask God to remove our shortcomings and the sin in our life, and even more to change us. In Step Seven we ask God to change our heart and mind so that we think and act differently. To be successful in recovery requires a fundamental change, an internal change. It is with Step Seven that we can go further than just being clean and sober, but we ultimately can become the person that God intends us to become.

Step Six of Recovery: Ready for God to Remove Our Defects

Step Six of Recovery: Ready for God to Remove Our Defects

Step Six of Recovery presents the question are you "entirely ready" and willing to have God remove all your defects? Step Six can be a dramatic step forward in your recovery and a dramatic step forward in your faith as well. Step Six is all about being ready and willing to have God remove your character defects! You do not do the removing, but rather God does and you need to be "entirely ready" and willing. Step Six is much like the passage from Ezekiel 11:19 that says "I will give them a new heart and a new mind. I will take away their stubborn heart of stone and will give them an obedient heart." Embrace Step Six and the message of this podcast to help you be successful in recovery and to see how God can give you "a new heart and a new mind."

Step Five of Recovery: We Admitted to God Our Wrongs

Step Five of Recovery: We Admitted to God Our Wrongs

Step Five of Recovery builds upon the "moral inventory" list of Step Four. Creating the moral inventory list of Step Four is an important step, but Step Five goes even further and requires action. It is not enough to simply make the moral inventory list, but rather Step Five requires us to take action based upon this moral inventory list. Step Five requires us to admit our wrongs to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. It is this process of admitting and confessing that God uses to bring freedom from our past and even makes our spiritual connection with God even stronger.

How God Can Change Our Expectations

God may not change the actual circumstances of our life or of our recovery, but God can move in our life with dramatic events that will begin to show us what he is really doing in our life and this will lead us to dramatically change our expectations. The God of the Bible is indeed the true "Higher Power" and he is able to help anyone struggling in addiction to finally be successful in recovery and he is also able to help anyone in the midst of any terrible struggle of life as well.

Step Four of Recovery: We Made a Fearless Moral Inventory

Step Four of Recovery: We Made a Fearless Moral Inventory

Step Four of Recovery begins a different direction than the first three steps. The first three steps are the beginning of restoring your relationship with God, but the next several steps you begin to look more closely at yourself. It is in Step Four that you take a "searching and fearless" moral inventory of yourself and in some ways this is similar to a commercial inventory so that you know what character traits to keep and which ones to discard. AA and NA both encourage you to ask for God's help and that God will help guide you in this process. Step Four can indeed be an important step in your recovery and also in growing in your spiritual relationship with God.

Step Three of Recovery: We Made a Decision for God

Step Three of Recovery: We Made a Decision for God

Step Three of Recovery is a foundational step and it is a critical building block for the rest of the Twelve Steps of Recovery. The Twelve Steps of Recovery are all about a spiritual experience with God and that this spiritual experience with God can help you to be successful in recovery and even to a brand new life as well. Step Three is about making an intentional decision for God, to turn your will and your life over to the care of God. This means that you will no longer be in control of your life, but rather God will be in control. Make a decision for God and be amazed at what God can do in your life.

Step Two of Recovery: A Power Greater than Ourselves

Step Two of Recovery: A Power Greater than Ourselves

Step Two of Recovery is an important step and in many ways it is the beginning of hope and also in a small way the beginning of faith as well. Step Two is all about POWER, but not just any power. Step Two is specifically about "a Power greater than" yourself that can help you to be successful in recovery. Step Two reveals that there is indeed hope, that you can be successful in recovery and it all starts with "a Power greater than" yourself with the true "higher power".

Step One of Recovery: We Admitted We Were Powerless

Step One of Recovery: We Admitted We Were Powerless

Step One of Recovery is where recovery starts at the beginning. It is important to not skip over this important step, as each step builds one upon the other. Step One is very much like the passage in Romans that says "I want to do what is right, but I can’t.” In your own strength you are indeed "powerless" but God is the true "higher power" and he has the power to help you along your recovery journey of the Twelve Steps of Recovery. Start at the beginning with Step One of Recovery and be amazed at what God can do in your life.
