More than Grace
We wrap up our series, Good Soil, with our final soil level—GRACE. Got grace? What exactly is it? What does it look like in motion? We all love the song, we love the way it feels in light of God’s grace for us. But grace doesn’t always feel good when we’re told to give it to those who are really hurting us. It feels like grace might cause accountability to slip right out of our hands. What do we do? This week, remember grace is proactive forgiveness—compassion and understanding before the offense. Applying both of those will allow you to remove your fury and walls of defense while also saying “that’s not okay.” How does your level of grace need to increase? Who in your life will get more of your grace?

Dialing in on our “internal soil” conditions. Good relationships need proper nutrients to grow good fruit. This Sunday, we check our “forgiveness” levels and how to forgive. Resentment stifles good fruit.

Learning to be CARED for
This message wrapped up our series “Seeking Higher Ground,” which focused on our primary relationship with God. The final grace of knowing Him intimately is being grafted in, cared for, and made to produce fruit. So consider this week how God is caring for you—pruning, protecting, guiding you, and how God is working to produce fruit in you that will truly impact others.

Finding your identity - Unusual Suspect
Look at My Dress Daddy! This morning as I prepared breakfast for my kids, they colored in the dining room. My daughter (age 3) shouted in excitement, “Look, Daddy! My dress has two crosses on it!” Thinking she found cross patterns, I peeked around, instead, to see she’d drawn two bright orange, glittery, permanent crosses on her new summer dress. In enthusiastic defense, both Samuel (age 5) and Lizzie explained, “One cross is to give Jesus because He’s in my heart, and the other is to give with others so I can tell everyone about Jesus.” A permanently-marked new dress or not, I immediately halted my scolding. “Lizzie, Samuel, that’s beautiful! I’m so thankful you have Jesus in your heart and want to share Him with others. That makes daddy really happy.” This message celebrates the grace of knowing fully who we are (identity) and what God has designed us to do (purpose) as we come to know our Designer. While my son and daughter may have a long way to go and plenty of setbacks to face along the way, I think they are already discovering what took me 22 years (maybe more). Have you stopped to think about it and to ask God-“Who have you made me to be, Father? What would YOU have me do today?” That’s my invitation to you this week—find out from God who you are, not what the world or your job or your Instagram says, but your Father and Creator.

This week is the 4th of “Seeking Higher Ground,” growing in our good, good God. This Sunday is the first of the “knowing benefits” in our relationship with God. God empowers us through our intimacy in Him. But why? Right After the Close, Maybe you too have been in a situation, seeking God’s power, wisdom, and deliverance, only to feel like nothing happened, no one was listening. Sometimes what I’m asking for just isn’t right, and God knows that. But more frequently, I’ve prayed and prayed and prayed and finally concluded it’s just not happening, only to see a few weeks later that God DID IT. His timing is different. We constantly need to learn His timing, reject needs for instant gratification, and trust His desire to do good. THIS WEEK, what have you started to lose hope in what God wants you to hold tightly to? Keep it going!

Horizons 25th Birthday! & “A Solved Mystery”
Our 25th Anniversary Sunday will be full of stories, celebrations, memories, and dreams, and will ultimately focus us on the future and learning to know and “unknowable” God through relationships. Winds of Celebration I hope you’ll have a chance to watch Sunday’s message, with long-time member and leader, Susan Sapp, speaking to the 25 incredible years of ministry at Horizons. It is worth hearing! I followed up with a message on the Holy Spirit’s work in it all and challenged each of us to better nurture our relationship with that Spirit. It’s ONLY through the Holy Spirit we can have an intimate relationship with our God and Savior. Nurture your prayer, reading, and fellowship life. Easy Breezy As you enter this week to nurture the Holy Spirit in you, consider this. I recently spoke to my French neighbor about the differences between the US and France. Life here, he said, is way easier, but the quality of life in France is higher. Wait. Easier isn’t better? He explained all the conveniences in the US seem to lead to more work, more rush. Nothing will crowd out the Holy Spirit faster than rush and busyness. Will you take the time to slow down this week for the sake of the Holy Spirit?

Better Without It
Breakout Session - Seeking Higher Ground Moving from our big-picture look at relationship, we now focus around our most primary—that with our God, Father, and Creator. Our second in the series, “Breakout Session” Leads us into a deep look at what we know and what we are actually being told by the Spirit and how we might break out of those previous molds to dive deeper into the truth of who God is. Better Without It I challenged the depth of everyone’s relationship with God on the basis of how truly surrendered each of us is to Him. Many of us end up pursuing God for personal gains, with a stride of pride, but God invites us for Spiritual gain in a walk of humility. How surrendered are you? What are your motives for pursing God, and what needs to change from a self-fulfilling prospect to a spirit and soul filling approach? Take the inventory, make the beautiful surrender!

We've been punk'd - misguided relationships
Seeking HIGHER Ground, We’ve Been Punk’d! Moving from our big-picture look at relationship, we now focus around our most primary—that with our God, Father, and Creator. Our first in the series, “We’ve Been Punk’d” suggests we might be going about our relationship with God in a misguided way. Discover the actual relationship God wants to have with you, and you with others! The Beauty of Knowing Perhaps it might seem like a harsh term, in light of recent events in the Ukraine, but nevertheless, it fits. In Sunday’s message, we dove deep into the basis of our relationship with God. In Paul’s testimony to the Philippians (3:7-11), he reminds us that this relationship should foremost be on the beautiful basis of simply knowing God. We cannot love ourselves or others as God does before we know God. This is a deep, connected, truthful, and loving knowing that replaces aggression with peace, fear with courage, lack with gratitude. This deep knowing releases us from our wars within, and our wars with each other—there will no longer be need for them. Know Before You Go Take inventory on your relationship with God. Is it built on the basis of any of the four mentioned Sunday? How are those faulty basis affecting your growth in God, and your treatment of others? What basis will you give up to grow closer with God this week?

Prioritize community and relationships
Go Big to Go Home! Today's Message the main point was that God chooses His greatest, most impactful, and long-lasting work to be done through the BODY of believers over the individuals of faith. So, while it may be the trend right now to break away from those we don’t agree with, step aside from anything that might obligate us, or be a lone hero, smaller, in God’s world, simply won’t be better. My challenge to you this week—where do you need to prioritize community and relationships over our own destiny this week for God’s work?

Karate Kid and Relationships
on Holy Ground, Relationally Revealed Week two of “Holy Ground,” our focus moves from how God designed us to be relational to how relationship is the essential key to knowing and experiencing God Himself. Of all the ways God could have gathered His people and made His name known, God chose relationship with each of us as His primary way. Of all the things that are important in the Kingdom, relationship takes a top seat! Want to see God? Get to know Him first. Go fishing for better! In Sunday’s message, the main point is that God is revealed through relationships—both with others and with him. I could sense the immense peace and rest that flooded over my son as he joined his dad and was wrapped in the beauty of his heavenly Father’s creation. AND, my heart settled down as well—there with my son and my Father. We were worshiping. This week, I invite you to see God’s presence in the midst of your relational interactions. You may need to see God INTO some of your more difficult relationships. But do it, make the connection between God and those you’re with.

His greatest pleasure is always found in US - Relationally Made
Okay, please know I have full respect for worship artists, they deeply bless our worshiping world. But, I have always been a little annoyed with how focused a bulk of our worship lyrics are on the individual. Yes, yes, it IS AMAZING He died for YOU, saved YOU, loves YOU, and is always with YOU. But in this message talked about God’s ultimate intention being on the BODY of Christ, the collection of followers. While God is absolutely head over heels about YOU, His greatest pleasure is always found in US. AND, if we’re to truly follow Jesus, our focus, like His, should naturally also be about serving others and having their needs before our own.

Seeing me as You see me!
Horizons’ final week of “A New Beginning” concludes this Sunday with a New Vision. Vision is like a raincoat when it’s raining. It’s the last thing you put on before going out, but essential for keeping all the other resolves from getting ruined. Cover all the changes you made in your heart, mind, focus, and friends with a worthy vision. Better than a new car or even a whole-home makeover, a new, healthier, holier YOU awaits!

Always Under the Influence
Sunday, and the Road The fourth week of “New Beginning,” during Sunday message, met us in an interesting place. As it turns out, we ALL are faced with the presence of others’ influences in our lives and choices. And, we all travel the road of navigating influences together. Yet, I’m guessing most of us don’t realize we hold the controls to those influences. We are given the freedom and responsibility to choose who will influence us, and how much. Making wise choices about those influences will determine so much of our resulting lives. Taking it on the Road A necessary first step is to take 5 minutes and make a list of who or what influences you the most. Awareness is key; you’ll be surprised. The second step is asking “WHY?” Why have you given those people or that message the keys to your heart? It’s a good thing for some of those on your list to influence you, but not all. Lastly, with your new clarity, what new influences will you seek, for a healthier, more faithful you?

More than Lemon Cake in the Bakery Isle
Horizons’ third week of “A New Beginning” turns to a New Focus. From Paul’s teaching in Colossians, we are reminded and challenged to set our minds on things above and not on earthly things. What are those “things from above,” and how do we make the shift? Better than a new car or even a whole-home makeover, a new, healthier, holier YOU awaits!

Changing the way we think
Crazy Brain Training When I was in seminary, I was not looking forward to studying the Hebrew language; it seemed impossible to learn. Yet, I remember the day I started getting it. I had finished my Hebrew flashcards and went on to an assigned book. I looked at the page of English words and could not make out even one for about 20 seconds. Then my brain remembered I needed to look for different word characters and read from left to right (instead of the opposite for Hebrew). My brain had actually learned a new set of reading rules! I was astounded—it IS possible (and ended up being my favorite class!) Its all about learning to think differently in order to experience a new beginning. Changing the way we think is nearly impossible. Luckily, without even having to attend a special class or roll through endless flashcards, Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4:20-24 the work of thinking differently comes ONLY from the Holy Spirit. He does the hard work, all we need to do is agree we’re tired of the old way and accept the new ways He presents to us. This is good news, because a new mindset is key to growth and new experiences. Taking Sunday On What thoughts about the world, others, yourself, your purpose, and satisfaction need to change to be more in line with Jesus? Will you invite the Holy Spirit to renew your mind and do the hard work?

Chap Clark - The church and the marginalized.
Good parenting starts first with a good vision. From good visions good plans ensue. Have you ever witnessed what happens to parents and churches when children start growing healthy and robust faith relationships? Every parent and every engaged member of that church will find healthier, more robust faith as well. A Double-Vision Sunday! When I was a kid x-ray vision was always on the list of superpowers we’d choose from. Extra vision is cool, but did it really belong among extra strength, invisibility, and mind-reading? In Sunday’s message with author and guest speaker Chap Clark, he painted a vision for children and youth faith centering on seeing our young people and starting at just learning to understand them. Chap retold the story of the sinful woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears, dried them with her hair, and then anointed them with perfume. When he got the point where Jesus responded to an angry Pharisee named Simon, Chap pointed out how Jesus turned to look at the woman, and then turned back to Simon and simply said, “DO YOU SEE THIS WOMAN??” The question is poignant. Simon, do you see who she is, what she’s been through, what led her into her current state? The point for us is to ask ourselves if we actually SEE our young people. Do we know what their worlds are like, where faith is most needed in their lives? How well do we see anyone in our lives? It turns out, none of us even needs x-ray vision to find the answer—just a little more time, care, and focus. Taking Sunday Forward How well do you see the young people in your world? How well do you see others in your life? How well do you see yourself and your blind spots? Make a list of those closest to you who you may tend to understand the least.

Digging deep into their heart interiors
A New Beginning This first Sunday of 2022 shines the light of Epiphany as we celebrate 2021 and look toward the New Year. Our first series launches into the newness provided to us by the restarting of things and new approaches. Week one focuses in on starting the year with a new heart, letting our love be sincere, life-giving, and way-making. The First-Light Sunday! When I was young and played in the garden a lot, I’d dig holes I truly thought would reach China if they were deep enough. Ha! Little did I know… Nevertheless, without meaning to I’ve inadvertently shared this belief with my children, who are now telling they’re doing the same when they’re out digging (on warmer days). I just chuckle, but keep thinking, someday I’ve got to change that. Our series “New Beginnings,” started us seeking New Hearts. In our pursuit of those hearts, I invited every Horizons person to pray Psalm 139:23-24 as a prayer for digging deep into their heart interiors this week. No, you’re not going to find “China,” but it’s in those deep, vulnerable dives we see ourselves most clearly, learn the most about how we can grow, and find Jesus gently standing at the ready to walk with us. And while the digging may be work and will get messy, it’s worth it. Taking Sunday with Us Will you do the deep dig this week through this simple prayer? What will you find? How will Jesus grow you?

Jesus is the worthy Lord on His own terms, not ours, and they are good terms!

Washed Up - Alive, Leading, Purpose
Jesus Says: Jesus in Matthew with Pastor Jason Matthew 4:1-11 Jesus is tested in the wilderness. Living by the word. knowing the true word of God. Sunday’s Next Step: Baptism can seem like a peculiar thing sometimes, can’t it? When we’re receiving ours, it all makes sense. But looking in on it, some might say, “so you enter the water as one person and come out a new person? Just like that?” And there is also the chance it all made sense closer to our baptism, but now seems less clear as time has passed. It’s for all these reasons I’m so thankful we were led to share a Word on baptism last Sunday. As we saw, it’s absolutely vital to lives we hope to live in Christ from that moment forward. In short, it is in our baptism that we will find EVERYTHING we are needing and missing in our lives because it is in baptism, through the washing over and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are given everything. Now, the question is, how much fruit do you see from your baptism? While the quality of Jesus’ presence and fruit in our lives is not dependent on how hard we try, it IS dependent on the quality of soil we let the seed of baptism fall into and how much we have watered that seed. Little fruit is an indication of poor soils and scarce water, and the opposite is also true. Digging Deeper: What is your baptism experience? What are the fruits you see from it? Is God leading you or someone you know to baptism or reaffirmation on August 8th? How will today’s message change how your baptism is continuing to grow new fruit in you?

Built on This
Jesus Says: Built on This Special Guest Craig Finnestad A continuation on Jesus in Matthew A note from Craig: I talked about how wisdom is a blessing to us and to those around us. Wisdom is the implementation of knowledge. Wisdom is developed from listening and placing ourselves in environments where we can be nourished by God. James tells us to ask God for wisdom and says God will give us wisdom when we ask. Wisdom doesn’t usually do the easy thing. Wisdom always does the right thing and sees the blessings in delayed gratification. Here are a few Scriptures to read and reflect on: If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. -James 1:5 Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. -Proverbs 19:20 Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. -Matthew 7:24 Here are three questions that will hopefully lead us to greater wisdom: 1. What are some obstacles you face to making wise decisions? 2. Do you tend to make choices based on short-term gratification or long-term good? 3. When challenges of life come your way, how do you respond to them? Do you invite God to join you in overcoming or dealing with these challenges? And one challenge: Ask God for wisdom every day this week.

About a week ago, while I was working on the sermon for this weekend, my friend Chris called me. Actually, he called me twice (on both my cell phone and my work phone numbers), so I thought it may be an emergency. Turns out two of our former Sunday School students were working on a remodeling project at his house with their business, and he wanted me to come pop by to see them. I went over and spent some time on the patio with all of them, and I was inspired by their faith. Now in their mid 20’s, one of the guys had a tattoo of one of his cousin’s favorite Batman quotes on his arm. It served as a way to remember him, because his cousin passed away when they were both young. He also had a tattoo of Psalm 23:4. A reminder that when we go through the darkest valleys, God is still there beside us. Something that Jesus reminded us of too. The former student said the tattoo of the verse actually helps to bring up a lot of spiritual conversations with others. I pray that each of our confirmation students, and each of you, can have a faith like his. I want you to have a faith that lasts.

Love Like That - Self Giving
Loving more like Jesus is giving freely of ourselves, just as Jesus did. In a world where self-seeking is the celebrated approach, Jesus’ call to give of ourselves meets great resistance. Discover how, in Jesus’ economy, self-giving becomes life-giving. Let’s grow together, for the best life, and the best “us.” With Derek

Love BOLDLY Like That
Loving more like Jesus is loving boldly. In a world where our greatest aspiration is often to gain the approval of others and not make others unhappy, a “bold love” is rare and scarcely practiced. Jesus reminds us love must be prepared to break through barriers to reach the center of others’ hearts. Let’s grow together, for the best life, and the best “us.” With Pastor Jason

Love Like That Gives Grace
Loving more like Jesus is striving to be more graceful. To be more grace-full we must be less spite-full. And to achieve this, we must have all the grace God has to offer. This is Jesus. Let’s grow together, for the best life, and the best “us.”

Love Like That Comes Near
Horizons’ ALL-CHURCH study, Love Like That enters week 3 to love like Jesus. This Sunday, our objective for loving better is to become more approachable, like Jesus. At first glance, it seems simple, even inconsequential. But the quality of our approachability ties directly to our heart’s accessibility. If your heart is closed to others, no love can easily pass beyond its hard exteriors. Let’s grow together, for the best life, and the best “us.”

ALL Ready this Time!
Horizons concludes our New Year study of James’ letter about being more ready this time for the storms that will come our way. In our final lesson, James encourages us to respond to life by stretching out our timelines. So often we get caught up in the “here and now” that we don’t realize how our short-term choices don’t line up with our long-term hopes. Let’s grow together, for the best life, and the best “us.”

Being more ready focuses this week on self-awareness and the underlying desires that wreck our good responses and also on keeping our “Spirit levels” high. More of Him means better choices. Let’s grow together, for the best life, and the best “us.”
