192. Sophie von Oertzen, the founder of Sophie Williamson Design on The Many Paths She's Traveled, and How You Can Shop Her Bold Interiors & Design while Minimizing Your Environmental Impact

Today's guest is Sophie von Oertzen, the founder of Sophie Williamson Design. Throughout her childhood, Sophie witnessed numerous scenes of Gastfreundschaft at joyful dinner parties with her parents’ friends, family holiday gatherings, and society events. And it’s those memories of listening in on the buzz of conversations and raucous laughter shared at parties and over candlelit dinners that she’s on a quest to emulate today.

For Sophie, making a house a welcoming home isn’t about following the latest design trends or subscribing to fashion norms. It’s about challenging the status quo and letting your own authentic style shine—an aesthetic that signals to guests that they can do the same. It’s in the warm lighting diffused through a beautiful lampshade or an intricately set table adorned in vibrant colors that welcomes every diner. It’s in the details, the tasteful trim of a pillow or the delicate pattern of a napkin, that shows a guest you care enough about them enough to share your very best. We know listeners will love listening to (and shopping) Sophie’s story!

Before long, Laura’s art started to gain recognition, leading to features in several well-known galleries in Charlotte, Raleigh and Atlanta.

186. Houston-based Interior Designer, Katie Davis on Scaling Katie Davis Design, Growing Her Business, and What Success Looks Like to Her

186. Houston-based Interior Designer, Katie Davis on Scaling Katie Davis Design, Growing Her Business, and What Success Looks Like to Her

Katie Davis is a Houston-based interior designer focused on all aspects of residential design. She takes a practical approach to her work, emphasizing the idea that a home should be truly lived in above all else. Her portfolio is filled with stylish spaces that nod to a new-traditional aesthetic while maintaining a sense of modernity and an eye for today’s trends.  Katie’s appreciation for design started from a young age, when her family undertook a major remodel of the home. She observed her mom and an interior designer work together to develop, coordinate, and implement a shared vision for her family’s home—an imaginative and collaborative process that still resonates with her today. And so began her love affair with beautiful spaces, and quality furniture, fabrics, and materials.  Life, however, took Katie in a different direction. Upon graduating from the University of Texas, she went on to attend law school. During her years as a practicing attorney, design remained a favorite hobby, until she fully embraced her second life, and her first love, launching Katie Davis Design in 2018. She currently resides in Houston, with her husband and two young kids. Her own growing family serves as the foundation for her designs, creating beautiful, vibrant living spaces that are comfortable, timeless, and can transition easily to the next phase of a client’s life. Katie Davis Design has been published in numerous publications including Southern Living, House Beautiful, Luxe Interiors + Design, Domino, This Old House, Modern Luxury Interiors Texas, Houston Chronicle, Real Simple, and Homes & Gardens.

184. Sarah Meyer Thompson, CEO of Mg Biologics on Performing Reasearch Trials and Disrupting The Equine Industry in The Best Ways Possible

Today's guest is the CEO of Mg Biologics, Sarah Meyer Thompson. Sarah's father, Mark Meyer, started Mg Biologics in 1999. It was here at Mg where she learned about antibodies, performed research trials, and launched new products for the equine neonatal industry.

Mark remains involved with Mg as Chairman of the Board, however, he has passed the CEO reigns (horse pun intended) to Sarah. She is honored to be leading Mg Biologics as they press forward.

Their products are focused on how to benefit your animal’s health, from neonatal to critical care needs. This includes plasma, IgG, antibody products, and antivenom for equine and canine. They believe (and research shows) that antibodies (and antivenom) are beneficial in reducing the duration and severity of a disease or in arresting the disease entirely. More importantly, Mg proudly continues in the spirit that Mark founded nearly 20 years ago: “Of the principles that we hold most dear, we consider customer service to be especially satisfying. Even to say it more clearly; sometimes when things don’t go right (because sometimes they don’t) we make an extra effort to see that the customer is taken care of. We are fanatical, intense, wound-tight, and high-strung on this point.”

Season Four | 182. Becco Bags Founder Caitlin Osborne on Creating Your Perfect Product, Staying Innovative, and Collaborating With The World's Best Wholesale Partners

Today we welcome Emily back to the mic as we kick off Season Four!

We are thrilled to share that today's guest is Caitlin Osborne, Founder of Becco Bags. Founded in 2021 by this mother of four, Becco Bags was created after a craft project went awry at her daughter’s sixth birthday party. The failed attempt to decorate bags using items backed with velcro dots inspired Caitlin to search for a better way to personalize accessories with interchangeable patches.
Caitlin came across a loop fabric commonly used in the medical field that proved both soft to the touch and strong enough to securely hold a patch. She worked through several prototypes, filed a patent, and Becco Bags was born! A natural entrepreneur, Caitlin leads design and drives brand growth, brokering wholesale partnerships with Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s, Harrods, Le Bon Marche, and the Chalhoub Group.

175. Leslie Tessler on Launching Hanni, Traveling, and How She Created A Cult Favorite in Body-care

Today’s guest is Leslie Tessler, CEO and Founder of Hanni. In 2010 Leslie was working her dream job in beauty but instead of enjoying it, she felt isolated, anxious and generally unhappy. After almost 10 years of not sleeping and suffering from what seemed like constant “mystery” ailments, Leslie decided to make a change and booked a one-way ticket to buenos aires, argentina. Her only goal was learning spanish well enough to be considered fluent (and potentially finding a hunky argentine fling). What she got was way more than what she bargained for.

Her 6 month, turned 10 year, “trip” to buenos aires was filled with adventure and excitement.

It took traveling to the other side of the world to finally start realizing what being happy means to her. Now that she’s back in the U.S in the super fast-paced startup world, Leslie is trying to incorporate her no pressure philosophy into her daily life and knows her products will help you do the same!

163. Hunter Bell, Founder of Hunter Bell, On Design, How to Be Innovative Early in Your Career, & Growing a Booming Fashion Brand From The Ground Up

Today's guest is Hunter Bell, founder of her namesake brand, Hunter Bell.
Hunter studied fashion design at the University of Alabama and Parsons in New York before founding her eponymous label out of her Manhattan apartment in 2006 with a rebrand in 2013.
The brand quickly grew and was soon carried by well-known retailers across the United States. Hunter was drawn to design because she was inspired by the joy it ignites in others and wanted her collections to do just that. Her love of travel and searching for the unexpected is an integral element to so many of her prints and special textiles throughout her collections. We are grateful for Hunter's genuine answers and vulnerability in today's episode!

162. Laura Deems, Abstract Artist, on Screen Printing, Patterns, Pursuing Your Passions, and How She Found Her Footing as an Artist

162. Laura Deems, Abstract Artist, on Screen Printing, Patterns, Pursuing Your Passions, and How She Found Her Footing as an Artist

Today's guest is Abstract Artist, Laura Deems, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Laura’s formal training is in dying fabrics, color theory, weaving, and screen-printing. The foundation of her artistic practice is derived from these methods and is where her tools come into play. Mixing materials, colors, and techniques define Laura's strong visual language. Her signature overlay marks were born out of techniques used in the screen printing process. Each tool she uses works to create a loose interpretation of a pattern. In short, she is “freeing” the motif from the repeat.

We know listeners will love getting to know Laura a bit more in today's episode. We hope you love the episode and if you do, please take a moment to leave us a 5-star review on iTunes. It means the world to us! Enjoy!
