Delivering The Goods with Graham Allison
Outline In this episode we take a dive into the life of an executive who navigated a successful tenure with the Royal Navy to ship goods and onboard new talent for one of the World's largest and most successful corporations. Graham Allison is a down to earth, straight talking Glaswegian who, following a tour of duty within various Amazon fulfilment centres, saw him take charge of one of Europe's largest. The Dunfermline site's 3,000 staff handle the task of managing pretty much all product returns for the UK and its fair share of order fulfillments from a facility that can probably be seen from one of Mr Bezo's rockets as it orbits the earth. We explore the lessons that can be learnt in the commercial world from forces training and the increasing customer and employee demands faced by this phenomenon of 20th century retailing. Graham certainly delivered plenty for us to unpack in this neatly wrapped episode. Eric Knows with Ella Bains
Eric Knows In the first of our series on customer service we follow the early life, influences and career of an entrepreneur and campaigner Ella Bains. From her early years in a rural setting just outside Leeds, Yorkshire, Ella discovered that school would provide some tough experiences which she endured until she arrived in the 6th form and life took a positive turn. A school trip to Paris and specifically the Louvre, ignited a deep seated passion for art, although that was put to one side, as parental influence led to a degree choice and career in occupational therapy. A 20 year career helping patients with a variety of injuries and conditions, primarily spinal in nature, highlighted the challenges faced when your life is turned upside down. The quality of life you once enjoyed and took for granted is lost and a period of significant adjustment begins. Those who suffer life changing events become suddenly aware of how life may be viewed by others born with a disability or diagnosed as neurodiverse. Ella had hit a plateau and despite the beautiful distractions of twins and an amazing son, diagnosed with autism, something was missing. The knowledge and experience Ella had gained in those 20 years should count toward something more, make a real difference (not that she'd been idle in those 20 years). That itch to develop a business took shape as the idea of Eric Knows formed and the opportunity to improve that life quality for those all too often overlooked in society, who prefer to stay home than be a burden on a day out, or cause difficulties for friends and family. Eric Knows depicted by an inquisitive Koala, as its logo, is a community interest company that has the ambition to improve lives and open the world up to those previously unable or lacking the confidence and capability to enjoy it. Google may be a go to for pretty much every question you may have but its findings all too often miss the mark especially with the needs of many communities. As Eric is prompted to lift his telescope he can find the right venue and approach to comfortably watch a sporting occasion, visit the theatre, go to the park or see a famous landmark. Supported by her team of researchers and bloggers Ella and Eric are building a valuable knowledge bank tailored to those whose lives are in need of a lift. Eric is about the quality-of-life events and excursions that we can take for granted but are often hard to access for many with underlying conditions or special needs. The realisation that money could be made from fashion suddenly dawned. Alongside Gerardine, Wayne built Red or Dead into a globally-celebrated label and, after 21 consecutive seasons on the catwalk, sold it in a multi-million-pound deal to the Pentland Group. In 1999, fresh from the sale of Red or Dead, Wayne and Gerardine embarked on a new adventure: HemingwayDesign. And the rest, they say, is history. Wayne qualified from University with a BSc degree in Geography and Town Planning which he has subsequently had an opportunity to put to very good use with collaborations with major builders including Wimpey on an award-winning site, Staiths, in Gateshead. Wayne spent 6 years as a Design Council Trustee Board and having been with CABE for a decade since its inception (as Chair of Building For Life), has been a Mayors London Leader and currently supports the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan as a Design Advocate. He is an advisor to House of Commons Select Committees on coastal regeneration, got an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list of 2006, is a Professor in The Built Environment Department of Northumbria University, a Doctor of Design at Wolverhampton, Lancaster and Stafford, and an Honorary Fellow of Blackburn College, the University of Cumbria and Regents University. During his service he facilitated workshops as part of national initiatives implemented by the National Police Improvement Agency to increase D+I awareness and practices supporting both frontline and executive leaders. As well as delivering bespoke leadership programs specifically designed for minority groups (The Positive Action Leadership Programme). He now delivers online (and in person with the appropriate restrictions) presentations and workshops. He coaches Senior executives in one on one sessions on how to navigate the D+I maze utilising a series of safe and confidential conversations along with awarenesses stretching experiential exercises. The Man Behind the Balance Sheet - Steve Clapham

We meet Steve Clapham author of a new bestselling book that's causing quite a stir in the investment world. The Smart Money Method aims to strip away the mystique and provide a logical path to deliver a better understanding of the risks and opportunities to help even a novice make better informed investment decisions. This is 50 minutes of conversation certainly worth investing in... Steve Clapham is the founder of Behind the Balance Sheet, an investment research and training consultancy, which produces bespoke research and runs training courses for a select group of institutional clients. Steve’s Forensic Accounting Training Programme launched in June 2018, and in its first two years some 300 professional investment analysts and portfolio managers at some of the biggest funds in the UK took the course, which has been enthusiastically received. The course is unusual in that it looks at the issue of financial manipulation from a practitioner’s perspective and has over 150 real life examples of accounting chicanery from around the world. Steve spent some 20 years as an equity analyst at different investment banks, covering various sectors, and was consistently rated in the top 10 in his sector in Extel, II and Reuters surveys. He moved to the buy-side in 2005 and was a partner and head of research at two multi-billion dollar hedge funds; he specialised in using a deep dive research approach to identify special situation opportunities. Steve trained as an accountant and lives in London; he enjoys reading, yoga, and skiing and is interested in investment theory, wine and classic cars. He is regularly featured in the press, including the Financial Times, the Times, Sunday Times, Telegraph and City AM. Cause and Effect with Rachel Flower of Excluded UK
Today’s guest is a very experienced lawyer, leadership mentor, business coach, public speaker, advocate for female entrepreneurship and one of the leading lights of Excluded UK. Excluded UK is a group created to fight against a significant injustice suffered by millions of UK taxpayers who, without good reason, fell between the gaps and received no help when much needed Coronavirus related financial support was handed out by the chancellor. Our guest is Rachel Flower and she will be talking to me about “Cause and Effect” How to Create a Campaign Platform and Grow an Engaged, Focussed Community to Achieve Results She is the co-founder of the Broadroom a network of like-minded individuals not exclusively for women but with a clear intent to encourage, support and engage with fellow female entrepreneurs. She also runs legal consultancy Serenwood and has created another network called Free 2 ride which is an online activity centred offering aiming to grow a community of active members looking for a healthier lifestyle. Rachel lives in Yorkshire but you just might hear the lilt of a Welsh accent especially when speaking passionately as she does frequently on subjects very close to her heart. You’ll also hear in this episode how Rachel is working hard to balance her busy career as a seasoned entrepreneur and campaigner with that of an equally busy parent. When Covid19 and lockdown hit the UK most of us were in a state of shock. Fortunately the Government did take swift action when mass redundancies were looming. We saw the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme also known as Furlough. There were other schemes announced to support the self-employed such as the Self Employed Income Support Scheme, and a Discretionary Grant Scheme co-ordinated by local authorities which has currently paid out £11 billion via 900k grants to businesses across the UK. BUT..despite the very best efforts of a wide range of tax players from self-employed to freelancers to company directors and those denied furlough or individuals simply earning less than 50% of their income from self-employment 3 million UK taxpayers are affected by this oversight and received Zero support since Lockdown began. Excluded UK is fighting their corner.

Coping with Covid - Diane Youdale (Jet from Gladiators) Discusses Managing Mental Health and Wellbeing in a Crisis
Covid19 has had a widespread impact on our lives. From the obvious fears of catching and hopefully recovering from Coronavirus to perhaps loss of work or change in pattern by working from home. Restrictions on travel and ability to see and hug loved ones also proved to be difficult adjustments but one thing that’s quietly growing whilst all of this “strange new World” has developed around us is the impact on our overall state of mind and wellbeing. BMA mental health policy lead Dr Andrew Molodynski has said: “Covid-19 has meant a sudden and stark change in the way people live their lives but as we return to some semblance of normality, we are faced with the longer-term impact this pandemic will have on mental health. As we know prior to Covid19 the UK’s mental health services were literally at breaking point, with an expected uplift in mental health issues following the pandemic the nation could be in for a very difficult time. This growing concern is hitting large proportions of the population and it’s important that we all understand how we can be affected and what to do to prevent, mitigate or treat the symptoms and underlying causes of poor mental health. Today we are delighted to welcome Diane Youdale who’s going to help us understand the common symptoms that manifest when we’re not coping and offer some useful tips and advice on better managing ourselves and essentially others, this is important for our HReSource listeners many of whom are responsible for the wellbeing of their staff. Whilst she is no longer “Gladiating” she is still very active in choreography plus teaching both dance and physical fitness programmes. Diane is also a qualified and practicing Psychotherapist/Counsellor and Coach. It’s this area that we’ll be exploring today and as Diane says herself adding Psychotherapy to her skills has helped round off her understanding of the challenge’s humans face in their lives, both physical and mental.
