Total Chaos

Total Chaos

At long last, it is time for Dan to make the temporary move from Las Vegas to Phoenix (and back again later in October 2021), and so we recorded the weekly episode a day earlier than normal and it's hitting the internets a day later than normal, because chaos!

Work In Fast Food Once

This is not bashing fast food work or workers, in fact getting into the job market via fast food restaurant employment is a substantial chunk of work experience... which can be taken to other possibilities!

We also talk about Food Network's Restaurant Impossible and Refurbished Mobile Phones... come on over!

Getting Out of the Way

Getting Out of the Way

Are you mask free? Interesting times as many places (definitely Las Vegas where Dan lives) are taking the CDC Guidance as gospel and flinging the doors open. Fingers crossed it all works out for us after our long slog staying healthy away from other humans...

Do check out This Week in Virology for their weekly Clinical Update, it's about 30 minutes to catch up on the science without any politics. Dr. Daniel Griffin is a qualified professional and he's still losing patients to COVID-19...

CasaNunzia continues!

We talked more about the CasaNunzia project and the motivation to get this entity formed so we can tackle some real world issues that Nancy and Dan encounter all the time (from the design side and the tech side, respectively). Now let us get some real people who really need the things that many want because they are cool or high-tech...

We talked about this briefly, an example of a project that was very expensive to develop but ultimately didn't address real needs of real customers. Let's involve people in the process to make their lives better with real solutions!

Worth of a Word

Worth of a Word

Today is all about words and reading and learning and more words, and Kroger.

Nancy is not fond of some of the new uses of old words, and who is, really?

Language is important, and there must be a reason why linguists are making such an impression on public discourse in recent months and years (and longer). Two we spoke about, whom you have probably heard of...

Education is a good topic, and so is history. We will almost certainly come back to these from time to time, if you want to join in the conversation, come on down!

HugoFloss Newsletters!

We're kicking off newsletters, because they are making a big comeback and you should be reading words as well as listening to them.

As of this episode we're configuring the two different commonly-available platforms to get moving, stop by here and subscribe:

DoNotReply

DoNotReply

Have you ever sent an email or left a voicemail or sent a text or any of the many thousands of ways we have nowadays to reach someone, only to never hear back from them, ever?

Arguably worse, when the response never comes in the middle of a conversational volley. Two or three messages back and forth, perhaps on the topics of meetings or business or purchasing or generally expending effort, committing time, using resources, and... Poof!

Ghosted.

Assuming you are not including that famous return address in your messages, why is Ghosting the new conversation ender?

Outside is the new Inside

Dan had a friend visiting Vegas and on his way through town they went to check out a new and interesting destination in the Vegas called AREA15. This is a big warehouse-style space with a few attractions inside, with the one you may have heard about the one they went to see, Omega Mart.

There's a certain part of a visit here that is best left to the visitors, so we avoided spoilers, for the most part. It is arguably kid friendly (there's nothing overtly adult and it's generally a fun time with no shortage of visual, aural, and even tactile stimulation in the Omega Mart installation, but Area 15 is maybe slightly more adult-oriented, sorta like Vegas).

Have Pics, Will Share

There are only more interesting and useful ways to share anything on the internets, so is it a good idea to hide your thoughts, pictures, videos, and discussions behind a Facebook login? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If sharing is caring, should we be embracing the possibilities, or falling back on the most awful social network advertising and privacy compromise platform on the planet? (There may be some editorial comment embedded in the previous sentence)

Shameless Plugs

As you know, Nancy has another, long-running podcast that you should check out. You already know where this podcast is since you're reading this and you probably listen as well, so subscribe using the usual tools to Home Design Chat with Nancy .

Of course, we always invite you to drop us a line here at Hugo Floss and we will definitely consider responding, even if your email address is DoNotReply. Along those lines, we are always happy to add to our respective coffee collections, if you're interested in supporting the habit.

Telegramming It In

Telegramming It In

The first episode produced via our Telegram channel! (Nancy's audio sounds better than Dan's audio, hmmmm)

If you're using the Telegram messaging platform, you may have heard about their new drop-in-style audio chap feature enabled for channels, so that anyone can create an audio program with guests and text chat and whatnot, with the resulting audio file suitable for posting as a podcast episode!

Our channel on Telegram is #HugoFloss.co

If you are NOT using Telegram, it's arguably a better option than WhatsApp and it's definitely (but still arguably) better than plain old Text Messages. This is not a paid endorsement, it's just the new normal.

Check out Telegram on your mobile device or desktop computer (or even via your web browser) and take part in our live sessions on Sundays at 11am Mountain Time in Phoenix (so it's always MST). More on that week-by-week, but in the mean time,

https://telegram.org/

Wait, did you hear that Telegram is some sort of spyware? Not really... we can talk about this during a future episode, or you can chime in with your findings! Hint: It's fine...

Topics today include keeping the house clean, keeping outside clean, listening to your users and customers, bad customer support from Kroger, and whatever else came up. Listen in and find out!

As always, listen to Nancy's other podcast, Home Design Chat with Nancy, which you can find posted on the homepage (and via Anchor and a few dozen other podcast places) at her website, DesignersCircleHQ.

You can still drop us emails of course, but do consider joining in the discussions via Telegram (we might try some other tools as well, as long as they are available to all, none of this iPhone-only business!)

Email Dan | Buy Dan a Coffee!

Email Nancy | Buy Nancy a Coffee!

Thanks for your support! Listening, sharing, and participating are great, too!

Other than using Telegram, this podcast and your hosts and their businesses are not affiliated with, nor taking compensation of any kind for, Telegram. Free mentions and free use of the platform and tools. Works pretty well, that's a good thing!

Speaking of Cognitive Load

Speaking of Cognitive Load

First things first, Zencastr doesn't make it so easy to recover from a network outage. In this case, while you will hear Dan mentioning that Nancy is offline (though strangely Nancy still hears Dan?), it is actually Dan's internet connection that dropped for long enough to make a one-sided conversation. While Zencastr (and other, similar services) records locally for just such eventualities, actually recovering everything is a matter of reading their support pages and learning about the... wait for it... /recovery suffix.

It is not without irony that we were touching on Cognitive Load and how having too many things going on can distract and detract, and then this happened, throwing a small wrench into the usual workflow. It's something to think about, and if you'd like to get the Wikipedia version of what Cognitive Load is, check it out at https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_load

We will almost certainly be trying out drop-in chat in some form, starting with Telegram. This is open source software that runs on more than just iPhones, but otherwise it's a similar idea as is offered by Clubhouse. In fact, everybody is jumping on that bandwagon as far as the service side (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Telegram, Discord... the list grows).

Check out Telegram if you'd like to join the HugoFloss.co channel and future discussion! Go to https://telegram.org/

Listen in for the rest of the always-interesting chat, and remember, we want you to join in!

Monetize?

We're going to experiment with monetization strategies so that we can do things like use a better cloud creation platform, offset the website hosting and whatnot, and generally continue to pursue the show. Starting out slowly:

Buy Me a Coffee is similar to Patreon but not so, well, Patreon. We each have a BMaC page to cross over our various productions, and you can do with that what you will... this links will take you to the BMaC site:

Buy Nancy a CoffeeBuy Dan a Coffee

And as always drop us emails with questions, comments, complaints, if you'd like to be an actual guest, if you need a kitchen or other space designed, if you need some software designed... we got you!

Happy Fifty-two!

Happy Fifty-two!

First things first, many congratulations to Nancy & James Hugo, these 52 years after a big wedding and plenty of adventure!

4/3/21 was a big day for weddings in Las Vegas. About 1000 couples, give or take.

Nancy does not like ghosting, especially when it comes to business! Who does, really? Return those emails and phone calls, because time is money!

Dan flew to Phoenix for the holiday and anniversary weekend. First time through airports in over one year, it was surprisingly uneventful.

Some forward progress on the CasaNunzia project, which you will no doubt hear more about in coming podcast episodes, until we create another show for those endeavors.

Whichever side of the fence on which you sit, the HBO documentary, Q: Into The Storm, was really interesting, and it turns out the documentarian was following Fan on Twitter. So good there, then watch the 6 hours if you're inclined. Fascinating and Frightening...

As always, check out the Home Design Chat with Nancy podcast, in addition to this one, both linked from Nancy's long time designer platform, DesignersCircleHQ.

If you would like to comment on editing an Anchor post using their mobile application, you will not find happiness on this end.

We Get To Workie

We Get To Workie

First things first: Stop pretending the pandemic is over! It's too late to slow down the rush to Spring Break, or to Vegas, but let's maybe try to make it to the finish line before we go nuts celebrating?

Some talking about vaccinations and whatnot, do check out the usual weekly resource for current information, provided by a subject matter expert!

Dr. Daniel Griffin, This Week in Virology weekly Clinical Update (YouTube Video)

Most of this episode, though, is about the Workie project, an open source community undertaking that Dan is starting to focus creative efforts in the Maker and Hacker (as in Hackathon) communities, to develop open source bases of technology and creativity to make the new era of working from home better and easier, especially for those with what some might call "special needs."

Workie will be a part of the CasaNunzia project, which we covered in a previous episode. Check that out as well, or stay tuned and we'll discuss the formation of the non-profit and other steps toward eventual world-changing success...

As always, you should be listening in to Nancy's other Podcast, Home Design Chat with Nancy, which you can learn more about next to all kinds of interesting things in the area of Design, at

Designers Circle (podcasts right at the top of the homepage!)

Springing Forward

Springing Forward

Whether you like it or not, many people moved their clocks forward by one hour over the weekend, though some did not, and that is what makes it fun! It isn't quite as simple as putting a stop to DST adjustments tomorrow or next week, there's a lot going on behind the scenes. Start with this Wikipedia article about the ISO 8601 specs for time and date handling, or do what many do and get on with your day, whatever time you have.

ISO 8601

If you're looking for a decent movie about family greed, we were talking about this one, and it's a pretty decent movie with a nice twist, and no shortage of familiar celebrities.

Knives Out

We talked a bit about suicide, if it's a topic on your mind lately, we are not experts by any means, nor are most of the people you know. Talk to people who know how to help you, or pass this on to someone who needs it:

Suicide Prevention Lifeline

Click to dial: 1-800-273-8255

We talked about various projects that Dan is working on, not the least of which is the website for this podcast, and eventually support for live streaming and chat in an open source way. Services like ClubHouse are iPhone-only, and the service we use to produce these episodes so far, Zencastr, is okay, but software engineers are wont to fiddle with things... Dan's other podcast shows are FFS Talk and coming this week, Quoggling Sand. And FriendVenn, and MuniBits, and more shows and software platforms. Stay tuned!

Nancy has been podcasting for a good long while, you could stop by and check out Home Design Chat with Nancy at the main site for the podcast and all things Design-related, with some focus on Kitchens and Bathrooms but that's really only the beginning.

The CasaNunzia Project

The CasaNunzia Project

First things first, it's a nice day and we're happy to talk about the weather, and then we try to avoid the topic of every day...

Take the words of an expert, there are a few out there, this is the one Dan likes when it comes to a concise update on the state of vaccinations and therapies and the virus we've all come to know and dislike strongly:

TWiV 727: COVID-19 clinical update #52 with Dr. Daniel Griffin

If you just want a picture as we evolve our status into the beginning of the second year of, whatever is going to happen, Johns Hopkins is one place to look:

https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/us-map

The main topic today, though, is a project we've been discussing for about two years in earnest, a bit longer in theory. Without spoiling it, the CasaNunzia Project is aimed at enabling and encouraging ideation, innovation, and implementation of so-called smart home technologies for those who need these technologies, which will ultimately make better products and services for those who want them.

Give it a listen, it's a topic we'll have more to talk about in coming weeks!

In the mean time, if you want to hear more from Nancy you can give her long-running podcast a listen. Find Home Design Chat with Nancy at her Designers Circle website, where you can also find some other interesting items all around the world of design for your live and work spaces.

If you would like to be a guest and have a nice chat about your topics of expertise, drop us an email and join us on any given Sunday.

The episode cover art this week should get you thinking about technology in the kitchen, though CasaNunzia is substantially larger in scope than just that...

Coupons and Coffee

Coupons and Coffee

If you haven't spent the last year learning the ins and outs of price shopping for essentials,  groceries, and sundries, you've almost certainly over spent somewhere. As more and more shopping for everything has moved online, whether for pick-up or delivery or regular old shipping, we can all benefit by checking prices everywhere before we click "buy." You have the time, may as well save the money!

If one of those items is coffee, maybe you also had time to learn how to be your own barista. Nancy like a nice flavored decaf drip, in large quantities through the day to keep the to-do list check marks checking. Dan likes the science, and trying new methods, grinding whole beans for Turkish style, pour-over, French press, AeroPress, and manual press espresso... and maybe more! What's your favorite brew?

The name of this production was inspired in part by a great, long-running YouTube channel called Mental Floss. It has been around for many years and always delivers some interesting stuff to make you think!

Valentine Shmalentine

Valentine Shmalentine

Calendar holidays designed to encourage buying are our favorites! With the way of the world, getting together for any holiday has been a bit of a challenge and if you are at home chatting instead of visiting in person, you should have recorded a podcast! That's what we did...

Not that there's anything wrong with holidays, though we do agree that a calendar holiday can actually move to suit the needs of family and friends, when you really think about it. Sure, the sale on a tree or black and orange decorations or turkey might not align with the custom holiday calendar you come up with, but what is more important anyway? Well, sales on candy are important, though some people might believe that candy given out at Halloween is spiked with all manner of razor blades and poisons and whatnot. Well, start here and see where you land after doing your own research...

Wikipedia Poisoned Candy Myths

Candy is good in moderation, but so is moderation. Sometimes.

Obviously we mention vaccinations again, but now there are vaccinations in the past (and boosters in the future), are you getting yours? Have you made an appointment?

As always, if you're interested in joining us as a guest, send an email to Nancy and either way you should visit Designers Circle to check out the Home Design Chat with Nancy podcast and other interesting stuff there... now not just for designers!

If you want to complain that our website isn't up yet, don't send an email to Dan, but there are some ideas bouncing around about enabling drop-in chat. Stay tuned.

In the mean time, please like, share, star, underline, and ring the bell, or maybe just subscribe to our podcast and see where this goes!

Vaccination Education Consternation

Vaccination Education Consternation

Lots to talk about this time around, and since we weren't watching The Big Game while you were, you get to listen in after the fact.

Dan is volunteering at a Vaccination POD in the City of North Las Vegas on Wednesday, Nancy is getting a shot some time in February, let's talk about this crazy undertaking yet again. Getting everybody willing to get inoculated on board with two injections 21 or 28 days apart, when we're not even sure if the various Variants of Concern will still be a problem after all of this... it's a crazy time, but still something to talk about because it will be a topic for just a bit longer. Or maybe even longer than that.

Take a break now and listen to the weekly clinical update from Dr Daniel Griffin on YouTube, about vaccinations and treatments and all sorts of other pandemic-related insight:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWVPytcsvg4

We had a nice chat about education, flipping back through Dan's history mostly, but Nancy was into creative works and drawing way way back when, it's amazing how we get to where we are and it's made easier when we want to learn about things that interest us, and if we can get to the tools. Dan was fiddling with computers wherever he could find one since around age 10, and look where he is now...

And as always, there are things that bother, and we talk about those things. If you've been looking for Nancy's Soapbox, well, this is the show for it, in most episodes so far.

After you've finished this one, give the other shows a listen and if you think you'd like to hang out on a Sunday some time for about an hour and chat about interesting things, email at least one of us

Nancy Hugo is Nancy@hugofloss.co

Dan Hugo is Dan@hugofloss.co

And don't forget to stop by Nancy's website, DesignersCircle and listen to her other podcast, Home Design Chat with Nancy, linked right from the front page.

Crowds in 2021

Crowds in 2021

With the global pandemic still with us, but with vaccines becoming all the rage, 2021 is going to be an interesting year indeed!

Are you getting into a queue for your vaccine? Can you make an appointment, are you worried about allergies and side effects, are you hearing about Variants of Concern and thinking the worst? Well surely this will be an ongoing topic we bounce around, but get vaccinated! You get to go outside and hang out with other people, and you'll even get a second date out of it so you can all get your booster!

But then, what about gathering in crowds of more than one indoors at trade shows and other such places? Will we ever venture to Vegas or LA or other cities around the US or even around the world to meander through crowds, to see and learn about the latest and greatest in the world of Consumer Electronics, Kitchens and Bathrooms, and such things as Guns and Rodeos and Broadcasting equipment and even Pizza! Online video meetings have changed the world, are we ready to go back to over-priced hotels and waiting for shuttles to and fro carrying branded bags of tchotchkes and some throat lozenges? It appears we have at least a few months to ponder the future.

Speaking of K/BIS, the Kitchen/Bath Industry Show (which we did, go ahead and listen!), did you know you can get signed up to attend and even get a Monogram tour, even if you're not in the Kitchen/Bath Industry? If you're thinking Virtual Attendance, they have a deal for you:

Give a listen to Nancy's podcast all about this, visit that episode at https://designerscirclehq.com/podcast-deron-renson/

As usual we have plenty to say about plenty of things, and we look forward to adding guests and interactive live streams and all sorts of modern conveniences. If we're going to be hanging out while vaccinations and mitigations are protecting all of us, why not have a chat?

Find Nancy's online endeavors (including her other podcast) at https://designerscirclehq.com/ and if you want to know more about anything from this or any episode, or if you'd like to be a guest on our new show, email! Nancy@hugofloss.co

Dan is still working between vaccination pod volunteer gigs and long quiet walks in his Las Vegas neighborhood. Got questions? Email always works for Dan@hugofloss.co

Anti Social

Anti Social

Everybody needs Social Media to get through the day. Or do they?

Cancel culture, political rants, handing over your personal and/or business brand(s) to Big Tech, services going down or going away, has the world gone off the rails? How do we keep in touch with family and friends, conduct business, and express thoughts and opinions without the specter of suspension or expulsion hanging over us? Will this go down on our permanent record?

There are options! Listening to Eli the Computer Guy about his travails (including some community strikes) on YouTube as one example, there are more and more each day, from world leaders to... maybe you?

A chat on the Mark & Carrie Podcast about Google in Australia (their episode from January 23, 2021) raised some additional questions about what happens if your platform of choice decides to pull up the stakes and move along, or sometimes they just disappear (with your stuff?).

If you're in the Arizona Design Community (or beyond), Nancy is setting up a bit of a contact list so everybody can still be found if the unifying force that is Facebook falls out of favor with a few people, check out Find Me Here on Nancy's professional networking pub at DesignersCircleHQ.

Dan is working on a thing that fits into this mess, the idea being to own your content and your brand and publish links back to your own website or other online destination... always keep your family, friends, and fans connected to you, let them discover you elsewhere but always invite them to your place to hang out! More news about that in the next episode or so...

We're going to have more guests and more participation, if you'd like to get in on this weekly discussion reach out to Nancy via the classic internet method, email! Send a quick note to nancy@hugofloss.co and describe what topic we can all have a chat about.

If you're interested in nerding out, send that note to dan@hugofloss.co and we'll see what we can come up with.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for sharing and liking and friending and tweeting and whatever else you're into...

Prenuptials and Post-Vaccinations

Prenuptials and Post-Vaccinations

It finally happened, our first guest!

Attorney Tami Hugo Haley joins in to talk about prenuptials and business and assets and splitting things up between married and unmarried peoples. The laws may vary where you are, so these are only food for thought and most definitely not legal advice.

And what about the dog? You can listen in here and then visit haleylawaz.com if you need to get some actual legal advice.

Dan volunteered at a Vaccination POD in the City of North Las Vegas during the week, and so he was able to get the first of two vaccination shots.

How did it all work out at the Point of Dispensary, how does the second shot work, side effects... would you like to know more?

As always, find out more about Nancy's other podcast and various other projects at

Designers Circle

Dan is in the middle of many things that he'll be dropping in the next show so stay tuned!

Please subscribe and share and like and favorite and retweet and regram and... or maybe just give us a listen this time and next and stay healthy while you're doing it!

Travel Memories

Happy New Year!

A quick chat about this new virus strain making the headlines, but we're all tired (but hopefully not sick) of this topic by now and it's a long year ahead, on to better topics!

Dan had gone to Thailand for the 1999-2000 switch, a Happy New Year back then except for a little travel snafu at BKK.

Nancy went to Italy and departed via wheelchair.

Listen in to hear more, and coming up in a week or two is our first guest!

Year End Happy

Year End Happy

The final show of 2020, but the fourth show of our new podcast!

First things first, did you have company over? Hopefully you kept it transmission-free.

We're big fans of Sebastian Maniscalco, excellent stand-up comedian, and this bit in particular about company coming over
Doorbell | Sebastian Maniscalco: What's Wrong With People?

We're going to add a third mic to the mix and we're still determining how we can convince a guest or two to join in now and then with some interesting ideas, projects, or topics to prattle on about. That's what a new year is for!

Don't forget to visit Nancy's websites, and she has an entirely separate podcast about kitchen design chats!

NancyHugo.com

And if you're looking for live websites for Dan, remember he's a programmer so design aesthetic takes three times longer than it should. But if and when the time comes, his podcast is at

FFStalk.danhugo.com

So much website to work on, so little time, but these are the days of our lives.

We hope you had a safe and healthy holiday season for 2020 and whatever you did to bring in the New Year for 2021, let's hope it worked!
