#07 - Aging - Fighting the Health Effects of Getting Older

#07 - Aging - Fighting the Health Effects of Getting Older

Getting older is generally associated with a decrease in performance and an increase in health issues and disease, but why does this happen, how is aging actually defined, and once we understand the process itself, is it possible to do anything to slow the process down or manage the negative effects? Dr.Sam van Eeden discusses how aging fits into the bigger picture of medicine and functional health, and explains the concepts behind the approach he takes to helping people manage their own aging process.

3.30 - Aging can be classed as a disease or a degenerative condition in some ways.

5.10 - "That's normal for your age" is normal for some doctors to say to patients.

8.00 - ICD codes are the worldwide standard for classifying disease.

10.00 - How do insurance companies view a disease?

11.30 - You are on your own until you have an active ICD code and a disease.

13.20 - Preventative medicine is not classed as guideline treatment standards for doctors.

21.40 - Metabolic disease is the biggest threat to human health ever.

27.00 - Can you potentially boost human lifespan by understanding and applying the science?

28.50 - Sharks never develop cancer.

#06 - Functional Medicine - Managing Disease or Promoting Health?

#06 - Functional Medicine - Managing Disease or Promoting Health?

What sounds better to you: waiting until you get sick, visiting your doctor and trying to manage the disease, or taking a proactive approach and optimizing your health, to try to prevent the disease from ever taking hold?

Dr.Sam van Eeden, a functional medicine practitioner, speaks about his approach to preventing and managing the illnesses and metabolic diseases that have become so prevalent in modern society, like heart disease, high cholesterol and diabetes, his views on the issues with the current healthcare system, and explains what functional medicine actually involves, as a concept and a practical treatment format, touching on the importance of considerations like proper nutrition and lifestyle, and treatments like IV vitamin therapy.

3.03 - How is functional medicine sometimes interpreted?

4.14 - Functional medicine is science and evidence based practice.

6.10 - Functional Medicine is a study of external factors and the ability of the body to adapt to those factors.

15.10 The World Health Organization did a study about the link between statins and a reduction in cardiac surgery, but this is not entirely relevant any more.

17.00 - It's not no longer accepted that statins decrease heart disease.

17.47 - Does Dr.Sam think people are being kept sick for profit?

45.10 - People are revolting against chemicals and drugs.

48.00 - We know statins don't change the requirements for cardiac surgery, but the current medical guidelines have not changed to reflect this.

49.20 - Cholesterol is like a firetruck responding to a fire, statins stop the firetruck but not the fire. Inflammation is the fire, in the endothelial cells.

51.00 - It's not just about the LDL levels tested, it's more about the levels of inflammation in the blood vessel cells.

56.00 - It's about reducing systemic inflammation in the body.

57.10 - Taking statins can prevent further plaques from forming, but there's no evidence to suggest it helps plaques already formed.

58.05 - Things like Lecithin, Phosphatidylcholine etc can reduce these plaques.

1.00.12 - There is no link between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol levels.

1.07.00 - The fast food industry in the UK has grown by 56% over the last 3 years.

#02 - Dr. Ali Ghanem & Stem Cells

Stem cells are specialized cells which develop into all the structures and tissues that make us up as human beings. Many modern regenerative treatments harness the power of these cells to help with injury, illness, aesthetic issues, medical concerns and more, but the use of stem cells in medicine is often a controversial one.

Regenerative medicine expert, Dr.Ali Ghanem, pulls back the curtain on stem cells, explains how they actually work, and how they should be adopted into modern medicine, alongside more traditional treatments, to achieve incredible results for us as patients and wellness clients. He also cautions against the many pitfalls we can face when considering these types of treatments.

Show-notes:

0.25 - Dr.Ali describes his own background and the origin of stem cells.

3.18 - The limitations of plastic surgery when it came to tissue repair and regeneration.

3.55 - How water salamanders can completely regenerate tissue after injury, and how this inspired more research into regenerative medicine.

5.05 - Dr.Sam's story has numerous similarities to Dr.Ali's story.

7.10 - Dr.Sam describes seeing incredible regeneration of skin on burn wound victims after gas explosions.

7.40 - Aesthetic medicine can be described as "controlled injury".

8.50 - Dr.Ali was very interested in cleft palates, deformities, and the stigma that is attached to scarring.

12.58 - We explore why there is resistance in the medical field and in the public to regenerative medicine.

17.45 - A contributing factor to some resistance was a Korean scientist who's research was discredited after it was shown that some of the data was falsified.

19.45 - Who is doing these types of treatments using stem cells?

24.10 - Many unqualified people are taking advantage of the grey areas in the legislation surrounding regenerative medicine.

25.27 - Regenerative medicine is being called 'stem cell treatments' by many, but if people knew the difference they might select their practitioner/clinic a bit more carefully.

28.08 - In 1982, embryonic stem cells were actually thought to be cancer cells!

28.59 - Dr.Ali explains that we ourselves were once totipotent stem cells.

30.22 - During early development, as we grow from 4 - 8 cells, we lose the ability to be totipotent.

31.20 - Cells change from totipotent cells to multipotent and pluripotent cells.

33.20 - Selectively isolating tissue and administering it properly is what regenerative medicine is when done correctly.

35.43 - There is huge importance to having specific training and understanding the finer details when performing a regenerative treatment.

37.53 - It is not ethical to tell a client that you are giving them a "stem cell therapy".

38.33 - Dr.Ali distinguishes between research based stem cell medicine and standard regenerative treatments.

39.34 - The best terminology to use in this field is "regenerative cells".

42.55 - There are stem cell banks where specific research and cell isolation is possible, but that is different from regenerative medicine.

44.28 - It is illegal to falsely claim or advertise a specific stem cell clinic.

46.00 - Regenerative medicine is going to expand.

46.44 - As a consumer, should you be wary of clinics claiming 'stem cell treatments'?

#01 - Wellness and Regenerative Medicine

What is wellness? Is it an airy fairy term used to describe something we can’t see, or does it have a base in measurable medicine, with real outcomes? How does regenerative medicine fit into this picture, and how Can this modern and functional approach to health benefit you?

Dan and Dr.Sam van Eeden discuss the growth of regenerative medicine, and the use of real science in the quest for wellness and feeling good.

Show-notes:

0.33 – Dr.Sam van Eeden’s journey into Regenerative Medicine – how did it all start?

2.04 – Seeing how burn wound victims recovered from traumatic injury with amazing recovery inspired Dr.Sam.

2.57 – How is regenerative medicine different from a more traditional approach to medicine?

4.38 – Dr.Sam’s Medical Research degree taught him how to question things more.

5.45 – How snake bite victims recovered from other illnesses using the regenerative capabilities of the body.

11.25 – What is the point of regenerative medicine?

14.00 – Doctors who are using regenerative medicine are pioneers in the medical field.

14.52 – Being too comfortable sticking to the same old treatments kills progression in the field.

20.57 – Dan’s background and how he became involved with regenerative medicine from a physiotherapy standpoint.

22.45 – Medicine has lost the personal touch in many cases.

25.00 – The guys discuss wellness and what that actually means.

29.09 – The link between your wellness, neuroscience and the ability of the power of your mind to actually affect your medical health.

37.43 – Combining science and medicine with actually feeling good, not just ‘getting better’.

43.47 – Why shouldn’t a beautician do a filler?

53.55 – What does Dr.Sam get from regenerative medicine, why does he do it?
