This is a painful time for so many of us. There is anger, outrage, pain, fear, racism, injustice, sadness, exhaustion — and it’s not just a recent thing, it goes back generations, as far as our country has existed.

We need to let our hearts be broken by how minorities, but especially black people, are treated in this country. Let our hearts be broken by the fear they have to live through, the injustice they’ve suffered, the way they’re perceived by everyone else, the way they’re put down, incarcerated, stomped on, segregated, outcast, spit on, villainized, criminalized, demonized, slurred, patronized, marginalized, rejected, and put into poverty … and then blamed for all of that. Let our hearts be broken by how long this has been allowed to go on, how exhausted they must feel from all of it.

The Buddha is famous for his thoughts, meditation technique, my friends we have to apply the thoughts which is expressed in his teaching.
We must meditate on a daily basis. We have to meditate for a few minutes a day. I have mentioned some of the Best Books on Meditation and also the list of Best apps for meditation.
Basically, the idea is this: instead of having a grasping, tense attitude about whatever you’re doing … you can lean back a little, and be more relaxed.
You can try it now: see where you are holding tension, take a few breaths, and release the tension. Come to a place of ease, peace, openness. It might take a bit of practice, but most of us are holding tension in what we do, much of the time.
If we can get to a place of ease, of not grasping or leaning into everything we’re doing … the things we’re doing all day can be more restful and we can finish the day feeling more refreshed.

This pandemic is no longer an exciting (but scary) novelty. We’re a couple of months into this lockdown and crisis, and it’s starting to wear on many of us.

We experience it as boredom, tiredness, exhaustion. We experience it as an ongoing burden, and can’t wait for it to be over. We lose patience and want to do anything else but this.

That all makes sense. It’s also exactly why we have difficulty sticking to habit changes, to long-term deep commitments, to ongoing projects and long-running challenges.
The realization I had is that when I feel like I’m overwhelmed and drowning in tasks … is that I created this experience for myself.
I denied this truth for a long time, but it’s a realization that was very powerful for me.
If I created the reality of being swamped and overwhelmed … I can create a completely different reality. I’m not a victim of my circumstances.
It might not feel like this is an experience you’re creating for yourself, and I get that. It’s simply because you have too much to do, and not enough time! But I’ve experienced it both ways, and I can tell you that we can create a different reality.
All day long, we’re only giving anything a fraction of our attention.
We’re distracted, multitasking, opening multiple browser tabs, checking phone messages and social media.
I’m a part of this like anyone else. I’m not immune, and I don’t judge.
This fractured, scattered, partial attention has many deleterious effects on our lives:

So often, we reject the experience in front of us.
It’s usually out of habit, from not wanting this particular experience, not liking the discomfort or uncertainty … or really not liking the fact that we aren’t going to get what we want.

Not liking the way other people are acting (totally justified, they’re idiots!)
Getting mad at ourselves for messing up again (you dumbass, why are you always doing that??)
