131. Emily Infeld, Olympic Runner
It's never easy to be on the injured list. Emily Infeld knows this well. These days, she's a middle-distance runner crushing 80+-mile weeks, but since turning pro after graduating from Georgetown, she's navigated a slew of injuries that have tested her confidence and will. In episode 131, we talk about the lessons that they've taught her, what it was like training alongside greats like Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher, the importance of good nutrition, and how she keeps negative self talk at bay when things feel out of her control. She also shares her recovery strategy (important when you're logging so many miles!) and what it was like to medal at World Championships and make it to an Olympic games.  SOCIAL @emilyinfeld @emilyabbate @hurdlepodcast OFFERS Athletic Greens | Head to athleticgreens.com/hurdle to get a FREE D3/K2 wellness bundle with your first purchase. At the end of last year, I almost avoided signing up for something that — these days — brings me a lot of joy. 130. Miles Chamley-Watson, Olympic Fencer
Miles Chamley-Watson never wanted to blend in with the crowd. Moving to the United States from London at a young age, he picked up fencing to deal with the criticisms he faced from his classmates when it came to "fitting in." That decision changed his life, excelling at the sport early on and eventually becoming world champion as well as a two-time Olympian. In episode 130, I chat with the Red Bull-sponsored athlete about how he got to where he is today, fending off the naysayers and staying the course to do what he loves, despite "not looking like anyone in his sport." He talks to me about the ins and outs of sponsorships, his lofty goal to be the first-ever fencer to make $1 million, and how he navigates the newfound fame that comes with success. Plus: How he's been managing the pandemic (including his big decision to move to the west coast) and what it was like to sit next to Madonna at the Met Gala. Briohny Smyth knows a thing or two about overcoming hurdles. In fact, today’s conversation is full of so many hurdles, that at one point I was sitting next to my microphone literally holding my hands over my heart. Today, she’s an Alo Moves instructor, yoga teacher, and mother of two based in Los Angeles. But growing up, Smyth was actually a young pop star in Thailand, creating 10 albums in 10 years. For episode 129, she tells me all about the challenges that came hand-in-hand with fame at a young age, battling drug abuse and disordered eating while trying to keep it all together, create music, and perform. Smyth talks to me about how she first tried yoga in India during a work trip, and how that experience ultimately changed her life forever. #HURDLEMOMENT: Everything You Need to Know About Adaptogens
I've included adaptogens — non-toxic plants that help the body resist stressors of all kinds — in my regular diet for over 2 years now. I know why I like them: They make me feel more capable, sort of like meditation. My stress feels more at bay, and although I may not be able to attribute that all to the herbs — I swear they help. I wanted to dive into this topic, because a lot of the products I talk about on the show include them. 124. Jesse Israel, Founder of The Big Quiet
The first time I heard Jesse Israel tell his story inside the Guggenheim at The Big Quiet, I knew I wanted to know more. The second I knew more, I knew I needed to share his story with the hurdlers. Now the brains behind the mass meditation movement, Israel went to NYU and started his career doing something entirely different — heading up a record label. After signing multi-platinum artists like MGMT, the Los Angeles native started battling crippling anxiety and panic attacks. So, he took a step away from the music industry, and eventually found his way into the meditation space.  In episode 124, we chat about his journey between the two, and how he used his experience touring with big bands to concept all that The Big Quiet would become. We also talk about what it was like to host events in some of the country’s most iconic venues (including Madison Square Garden), his best-practice tips for incorporating mediation into your regular routine, and how it felt to go on tour with Oprah (!) at the beginning of this year. Be prepared to be ridiculously inspired. This week, I’m sitting down one-on-one with Nichelle Hines, an actor, activist, and CRO at Cycle House, an LA-based cycling studio. Her passion is wild. In episode 123, she gives me her entire backstory, talking me through a college weight gain (and the loss that followed), then moving to LA from San Francisco to follow her dream to acting. She talks about a tough #hurdlemoment in her career — the writers’ strike in 2007 — which caused her to take on odd jobs including a catering gig at Chateau Marmont. And of course, we chat about how she got into cycling. Other highlights: Her insane story about teaching her first Spin class without any formal training, how she landed at Cycle House, and the special way she’s showing up in the fight for racial justice. #HURDLEMOMENT: Essential Lessons I Learned As A New Cyclist, Part II
I'm out in Rhode Island this week, and yesterday I took the morning off from work to ride 50 miles to and from Newport. My thoughts were consumed by the fact that there are so many things no one tells you about when you decide to pick up road cycling (and don't even get me started on mountain biking).  So, on the tails of the #HURDLEMOMENT on 8 Essential Lessons I Learned As A New Cyclist, I'm back with some more takeways. This time, I'm talking about bike-friendly roads (and some not-so-bike-friendly roads), the importance of SPF (ow), and the beauty that comes with not having all the answers and enjoying yourself anyway. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Are You Overlooking The Most Important Part?
The moments before the run are big. Monumental, even. I argue, the most important part. They're slightly anxious, a little excited, and often hesitant. During those give-or-take 30 seconds where you’re debating initiating the actual effort, oftentimes you encounter some sort of minuscule annoyance, like the fact that your watch isn’t picking up a GPS signal or perhaps a wonky, unsettled feeling in your right knee. In these moments, you make the valuable, conscious decision to do something for you. To believe in your own potential. You accept whatever comes with the miles and minutes that follow. It’s a bold act, to open yourself up to the beauty that can come hand-in-hand with wanting to take this time for yourself. I'm talking about this for today's 5-MINUTE FRIDAY. #HURDLEMOMENT: How NOT To Talk To Someone About Their Weight
Weight is a pretty taboo topic, like money or sex. This week for #HURDLEMOMENT, I'm sharing a recent conversation I had about mine with a follower, and offering up some insight on how NOT to address such a touchy subject (especially with someone you may not know all that well). As someone who has struggled with hers over the years — and is forever a work in progress when it comes to body confidence and positive self talk — it's interesting to be a part of any conversation where it's implied that "smaller is better." Fact: You CAN find happiness at many different sizes. In today's episode, I'm asking a very important question: WHY do you really feel compelled to mention size to another person? I’ve been seeing the same therapist since October. On Wednesday of this week, we had our last session together. I just had an inkling that I was ready to move on to the next chapter. But we ALSO get into a subject he rarely talks about: Himself. We chat about his backstory, running from a young age in New Jersey through college, and the #hurdlemoments he had along the way (including a sour relationship with the 4:00 mile). He confesses that without his wife, he may not be a run coach today, and talks to me about his hopes for the running boom we’re in right now. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: I Have to Get Something Off of My Chest
In April I was in a really bad place. Emotionally and physically. On the 10th of that month, I shared a story on Instagram about going into my kitchen 14 different times in one day. I was using food to cope with my problems, and I wasn't feeling good. I wrote about it some for SHAPE. Stepping on the scale was the final straw, reminding me of a difficult college #hurdlemoment, and thus began a lot of inner work trying to get to a better place. Journaling. Talking. Therapy. Strengthening. Less judgement. More acceptance. Setting boundaries. Better interactions. Now, a couple months later, I'm really proud of my progress. But here's the thing: No one's reaching out to me and commenting about my attitude. What I'm hearing, from friends and complete strangers alike, are comments on my appearance. Kerri Walsh Jennings is probably one of the best female athletes of all time. Bold statement, I know, but I grew up watching this beach volleyball player dominate year after year. As 5-time Olympian, Walsh Jennings has come back time and time again, showcasing her tenacity and strength not only in her sport — but as a human. In episode 117, I chat with Walsh Jennings about her journey, growing up in Santa Clara, California, and going on to play a number of sports before settling on volleyball in college. We chat about the hurdles she overcame in her professional career, and how the bronze medal in Rio played a huge role in who she is today. She also tells me what it’s like to work with professional performance psychologist Michael Gervais and shares her essential healthy habits for staying sane during this pandemic at home with her three kiddos. 116. Charlie Dark, Founder Run Dem Crew
#REPOST: This week on Hurdle, I’m reposting five back-to-back episodes featuring Black guests, hoping to amplify their voices and continue my commitment of being a better ally. Today's episode was originally recorded in November 2019. Spoiler alert: This Is one of my favorite live episodes to date. When Charlie Dark (@daddydarkrdc) started running, he was in a bad place. Dropped by his record label, the DJ and poet was teaching a poetry and creative writing class in east London and had recently lost a friend of his. It began under the cover of darkness. Between 1 and 3 a.m., he’d leave the recording studio in the early hours of the morning and run home. “I didn’t want anyone to see me. I didn’t need anyone to watch me fail.” Within a year’s time, he had shared his love for the sport with friends. Every Friday night, they’d link up to run a single mile. Soon after this #hurdlemoment, Run Dem Crew was born. Currently at more than 500 strong, Dark says that co-founding the collective gave him new purpose. “We’re changing lives.” In today's episode — recorded live at the Lululemon Re:Pair Lab — we’re chatting everything from how to defeat imposter syndrome to the highs and lows of conquering the marathon distance. Plus, following your true passion and the power of running culture. SOCIAL @daddydarkrdc @run.dem.crew @lululemon @hurdlepodcast @emilyabbate NEWSLETTER Sign up for the Weekly Hurdle, here.

115. George Foreman III, Former Pro Boxer & Founder of EverybodyFights
#REPOST: This week on Hurdle, I’m reposting five back-to-back episodes featuring Black guests, hoping to amplify their voices and continue my commitment of being a better ally. Today's episode was originally recorded in June 2019. If you ask George Foreman III what it’s like to grow up with a two-time heavyweight champion as a dad, he’s pretty humble about it—because that’s all he’s ever known. Graduating with a degree in business administration from Rice University, Foreman went on to preside over his dad’s business, traveling the world meeting celebrities and managing contracts. Amidst all the glamour and chaos, he came face to face with his #hurdlemoment. Standing at 6’5’’ and weighing in at more than 280 pounds, he realized he wasn’t happy in his corner of the world, going as far as to shut himself in a hotel room for three days.  Then, he made the jump into boxing himself. After a year of training, Foreman stepped into the ring for his first fight weighing in at 231 pounds. He’d go on to have an undefeated professional boxing career that ended in 2012, a year before he opened the first EverybodyFights in Boston. In today's episode, we chat about everything from depression and the scary side of entrepreneurship to his goals for expanding EverybodyFights dramatically by 2021. 114. Natasha Hastings, Sprinter & 2X Olympic Gold Medalist
#REPOST: This week on Hurdle, I’m reposting five back-to-back episodes featuring Black guests, hoping to amplify their voices and continue my commitment of being a better ally. Today's episode was originally recorded in February of this year. There's nothing easy about the long road to Tokyo for “400M Diva” Natasha Hastings. A two-time Olympian and gold medalist, the sprinter recently celebrated another major, magical milestone: Becoming a mom. For today's episode, I sat down with Natasha at the Under Armour Human Performance Summit at their Baltimore headquarters. To say that I’m in awe of her strength, determination, and power would be a total understatement. She talks to me about a few #hurdlemoments in her career that made her realize that she had to squash negative thoughts to reach her full potential, and how working with a sports psychologist helped her drastically. She also shares what it was like to stand on the podium at the Games in 2016 and — fast forward to now — hit the track for the first time post-baby. Bonus: 5-month-old Liam joined in on our interview (fun fact: at one point she was both podcasting AND breastfeeding, because she’s a champ). This one’s full of inspiration you won’t want to miss. 113. Knox Robinson, Writer & Runner @firstrun
#REPOST: This week on Hurdle, I’m reposting five back-to-back episodes featuring Black guests, hoping to amplify their voices and continue my commitment of being a better ally. Today's episode was originally recorded in December of 2019. I could listen to Knox Robinson (better known to his 28K+ IG followers as @firstrun) talk for a while, which is no wonder why this is my longest Hurdle to date. The Brooklyn resident writer and runner has his fair share of how-did-that-even-happen stories, from his days logging miles in Ethiopia with Mo Farah and running with Eliud Kipchoge in Kenya to heading up Fader Magazine and writing Kanye West’s first cover article. Upon sitting down with the father-of-two and run coach, I saw a whole other side of him that perhaps his 27.6K Instagram followers don’t often catch. In today's episode, the Nike+ Run Club founding coach talks to me about his beginnings as a runner growing up in San Diego, and how his passions landed him running at a collegiate level at Wake Forest. He gets really honest about the #hurdlemoment that made him quit the sport for 10+ years, and the life-changing event that reunited him with his biggest passion. We talk about everything from impossible training tactics and what it felt like to be one of the top 100 male finishers in the NYC Marathon (twice) to his best advice for anyone new to lacing up. 112. Ally Love, Peloton Instructor, Founder of Love Squad & Boss
#REPOST: Showcasing guests of all races and backgrounds has always been important to me as a creator. I value every single person that gives me their time and energy, from the individuals I sit down with to the listeners tuning in on the regular. This week on Hurdle, I’m reposting five back-to-back episodes featuring Black guests, hoping to amplify their voices and continue my commitment of being a better ally. First up, my conversation with Ally Love, originally recorded in September 2019. To describe Ally Love with the word “boss” would be an understatement. She is a do-it-all kind of woman: The in-arena host for the Brooklyn Nets, founder of Love Squad, Adidas global ambassador, and Peloton instructor (among other talents). In today’s episode, she tells me all about the #hurdlemoment which framed her “I can” mindset: A horrifying car accident at age nine which landed her in critical condition with a broken femur. We talk about how she came back from the unthinkable, rising up as a dancer and making her mark on New York City. She tells me about how she discovered her voice with the help of hosting classes, the three books she read that helped to guide her in her career, and the unexpected text message that landed her in the saddle at Peloton. If you’re looking for a little motivation to go after you passions, look no further — Ally is a ball of energy and she wants to empower you to be everything you dream of and more. Aliphine Tuliamuk almost quit running in 2014. Fast forward about 6 years, and in February 2020, she made the U.S. Olympic team. Coming in first place at the Olympic marathon trials in Atlanta, she broke the tape with an outstanding time of 2:27:23. In episode 111, we chat about everything from her upbringing in rural Kenya, running to and from school (as well as just about everywhere else), and her uncle’s suggestion that she come to the United States and go to university on an athletic scholarship. She talks to me about the difficult transition of attending college here, arriving in Iowa at Iowa State not knowing when she’d see her family again, then transferring to Wichita State where she had a ton of success in her sport. We talk about her aspirations to one day be a nurse, and the moment that inspired her to start crocheting and ultimately start an Etsy shop. And of course, she tells me all about that big Atlanta win, how she felt going into the day after a great training cycle with the Hoka Northern Arizona Elite, her strategy, and how she feels now that the games have been pushed back. Matt Taylor is super passionate about the sport of running, and TBH — it makes me pretty giddy. For episode 110, I chat with the Tracksmith CEO & founder about how he got to where he is today. He tells me about his aspirations of running professionally after growing up in Pittsburgh, running cross country in high school and then at collegiate level at Yale. He tells me that his times just weren’t cutting it, and that he pivoted to a few different jobs in the sports industry at places like IMG and Puma before launching Tracksmith. At the time, he says that he was frustrated with the appearance of almost all running gear, and after raising some money — kickstarted the brand with men’s apparel in 2014. Since then, they’ve introduced their magazine, METER, and rolled out a women’s apparel line as well. We chat about everything from the state of running right now and the shift of the 2020 Olympic games to what it was like to open the brand’s first brick and mortar store in Boston and his big hopes for the future of not just the company — but of running. 108. Rich Froning: 4x 'Fittest Man On Earth'
There is no better way to describe Rich Froning than a CrossFit legend, even though he gives me some flack for using that term in today’s episode. Whether or not you’re a CrossFit fan, there’s no denying that the sport takes some outrageous athleticism, grit, strength, smarts — and Rich has all of that. He won the CrossFit Games, which is the sport’s annual test to find the “Fittest on Earth,” in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 as an individual, and then came back on the team side to take first place in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. So, basically he’s a big deal. In episode 108, he tells me all the things, from how he got into the sport — going to his first ever competition on his way to spring break in college — to how he leaned into CrossFit to deal with loss in his family. We talk about the stressful adoption journey he went on with his wife Hillary, and he raves about their beautiful children Lakelyn, Trice, and Violet. 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: It's Time to Write a Really Important Letter
In college, I was in a serious relationship with someone In the army who deployed to Afghanistan. During that relationship, I started writing letters on flights home. Wherever I would travel, whether it was for work or personal, my self-imposed rule was that I would write my significant other a little something on the trip back to New York. The relationship didn’t last, but the practice did. Now, to this day, whenever I’m on a plane — I take the time to write someone a letter. A friend, a love interest, a family member, you name it. Often times, these letters are filled with things I may not be ready to say IRL. Things that I really need to get off my chest. Over the past couple months, life has shifted. These letters are something I miss, and something I’m starting to integrate back into my routine — no flight necessary — starting this weekend. PROMPT: Who would you write a letter to, and what would it say? Then, when you’re done, take the time to read it out loud. Ask yourself: How does this make you feel, hearing it?
