S4, EP 6 - When do you need a live agent and how to get one with Hannah Shogbola

Hannah Shogbola works in the Live Music industry representing over 25 clients from Hak Baker to Jaguar to Fredwave to Helena Star and many more.  Hannah is one of the only Black female agents in the UK. She’s also one of the few people to sell out Brixton Academy, Roundhouse and The Forum, which she did when she was under-30! In this week's episode Hannah gives insight into the live music sector, how to get started, what agents look for and how you might get one.  Hannah is also the founder of Daju which helps to showcase and develop artists.  It's another great episode with lots of gems.

S4, EP 5 - Announcing our brand new bootcamp video course for Independent Artists

Well we've hinted at it all season and today we finally announce what we've been working on last year - our brand new bootcamp video course for Independent Artists!  Back in 2019 we were doing in-person workshops for Independent artists which we took online during lockdown.  It worked so well that we decided to film a video course that can be available to Independent Artists everywhere to work through in their own time and at their own pace.  The course is in 4 parts covering everything from knowing your 'why' as an artist, music admin, gigging, social media, preparing for a release, writing a press release, creating your 12-18 month plan and much more.  You'll also find a helpful FAQ section at the end of each part.  Have a listen to this episode and we'll tell you more about it.

We've worked hard on this course and we really hope it is useful to the many artist who get in touch with us with questions about the independent artist journey and how to get started.

We always want to make sure that our resources are accessible and affordable so until the end of January 2022 the course is available with a 50% discount.  The course launches this Friday 14th January 2022 all you need to do is sign up via our website and use the code: IAMSALE

S3, EP20 - Producing an album with Bianca Rose and Jake Isaac

For our season 3 finale we have a conversation between Bianca Rose and Jake Isaac about the process of Jake producing Bianca's latest album, 'If You Knew, Would You Care?'  It holds some great insight from both artist and producer perspective and as the relationship worked so well for this project we thought perhaps there is some useful tips for you as independent artists within this conversation.

We are now taking a short break while we put all our efforts into finishing off something very exciting that we have been working on for some time and we hope to let you in on that early Autumn time.  In the meantime, keep on keeping on.  We see you independent artists, we appreciate you, we champion you and we're here for you.

S3, EP19 - Creating great visuals and music videos with Cat Couture

This week Bianca has a chat with the creative director for her recent album campaign for 'If You Knew, Would You Care?'.  Cat Couture from Amoroso Films is a creative through and through. There is not much she can't do creatively and she's also an independent artist herself.  Cat was such a key part of Bianca's creative process for her album campaign that we thought we'd share with you a really insightful conversation they had where you'll learn about how to prepare to approach a videographer/director, what is your responsibility and what is theirs, how to communicate your ideas, how to work creatively on a small budget and much more.

In this part we cover working with Label Services, working with a PR company, collaborating with other artists and producers, budgeting and levelling up.  It can be a difficult and emotional process creating and putting out a body of artistic work but with each cycle you can learn something to improve for next time.  We hope this chat gives you some tips and advice with your own releases as we've been really pleased with the results of this campaign.

S3, EP 17 - The Journey of an Album with Bianca & Loretta - Part 1

Followers of I Am Independent may have noticed that as well as running IAI, Bianca and Loretta have been in full-on album campaign mode for Bianca Rose's new album release 'If You Knew, Would You Care?' for the past few months.  It's been an incredible, year long journey from conception to delivery.  As we near the end of the campaign we thought it could be helpful for us to do a 'deep-dive' into everything we've been working on and feedback on what we learned, what went well, what we'd do differently and whether our initial plans and dreams turned into a reality for this project. This is part one of the chat so do check back next week for part 2.  In this episode we talk about having a good plan and planning well in advance, using funding wisely and creating a realistic budget, finding a creative partner to help bring your vision to life and bringing your best so that others can do their best.  We hope this chat is helpful and by the way, the album is amazing so do go and give it a listen!

Publishing can be confusing for independent artists or perhaps you feel it's only relevant for signed artists.  However, a publishing administrator such as Songtrust can be very useful for independent artists who don't have a publishing deal to make sure your royalties are collected internationally and that you're earning all the money that is due to you.  We had a really illuminating conversation with Lara Baker from Songtrust to give you a simple guide to publishing and to tell you how Songtrust can benefit you and provide you with some valuable resources too.

S3, EP 9 - Adjusting expectations and adapting plans in a pandemic with Tina Boonstra

Some artists have found themselves to be super productive and inspired over the last year in the pandemic and that's great.  However, others have had plans destroyed, frustrating delays, discouragement and disillusionment. We're big fans of Tina Boonstra an incredible Independent artist who has built her career up starting off on the open-mic scene.  Like many artists, 2020 was due to be a big year for Tina with lots of exciting things planned that disappeared, or were made impossible, overnight.  Tina talks about how she processed the disappointment, what she learned was important and how she adapted her plans for her artist journey.  Again, it's an incredibly inspiring and insightful chat this week and if you've found 2020/2021 hard as an artist we hope this episode makes you feel seen but also offers you some hope.

They say overnight successes take years to create and Marie Bashiru seemed to burst on to the scene last year despite having been creating music for many years.  She says the difference was learning from past mistakes, working with a strong team that believed in her and not giving up.  As we've said many times it is a hard and sometimes lonely road being an Independent artist.  Marie talks about her journey and what has worked as well as what has not worked.  It's an illuminating and insightful chat that we think you'll find useful and inspiring.

S3, E5 - Longevity and Live-streaming with Mide

This week we chat to singer songwriter, Mide, whose name and voice might be familiar to you if you're watching this season to The Voice UK where is currently on Team Tom Jones.  We actually didn't know that at the time of recording this interview as he was very good at keeping it a secret but you do hear a little cheeky hint of something exciting to come at the end of the interview :-)

Mide has been doing music for a long time and talks with us about his journey, how he's stayed motivated and consistent and how 2020 enabled him to discover engaging with his fans via Live-streaming and how to do that well.  Even though we are hopefully on our way towards freedom and live gigs, we think live-stream is here to stay now and can be a great tool for artists to reach fans all over the world.  So have a listen for a comprehensive list of everything you'll need and some great tips for live-streaming success.

S3, EP 4 - Being signed, mental health and redefining success with Nick Brewer

This week we chat to talented, UK Rapper Nick Brewer.  In many ways Nick had the coveted dream that many artists imagine; being plucked from obscurity and signed to a major label and achieving chart success.  However, things are never really as they seem and if you've always wanted to know what it's really like to be in that world, then have a listen to this fascinating chat.  Nick is so refreshingly honest about the highs and lows of his career so far, the mental health struggles that came with it and how he's redefined success for himself.  It really is such a good chat.

S3, EP1 - Being an Artist and a Parent: The Dad Chat

Welcome to Series 3 of the I Am Independent Podcast.  This series we are hearing a variety of artist's stories on a whole host of amazing topics.  We kick off the series with a chat we've been wanting to have for some time... the parenthood chat!  When to have a baby and how to work it around an artist career is the cause of much questioning and juggling for many artists.  It's not an easy decision for anyone to make but there are some particular factors that affect artists.  Today we hear from a dad's perspective from Singer Songwriter Jake Isaac, Rapper and author, Guvna B and Rapper and Poet, Joshua Luke Smith.  Three great artists and three great dad's but how has becoming Father's affected their artist journeys, decisions, priorities and outlook?  Listen in to hear a very candid and enlightening chat and next week we'll hear from a group of amazing artists who are mums. #Dadchat

The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 20 - Live Streaming fro Independent Artists

Live streaming is not a new phenomena but it has become more significant due to global events that have made live performances at venues with an audience impossible. With this new demand, new companies have emerged offering live streaming services and opportunities; some paid. We anticipate that these will rise in popularity regardless of what happens in the future so it makes sense to familiarise yourself as an Independent artist with what's out there and learn how to do it well. In this week's episode we give some practical tips to give a good quality live stream performance as well as an overview of some of the live stream platforms and services that are available. The I Am Independent Podcast- Series 2 - Episode 18 - Developing your Sound

Today on the podcast we return to a basic but necessary element of being an artist - Developing your sound. It can be quite a journey to really land your own sound and be confident that it reflects who you are as an artist and the whole process is valid. However, it's essential to know your sound in order to know how to find your 'tribe', connect with your fans and help your followers to discover you and know that you are for them. This is of course often an organic process of trial and error but there are some things you can do to help it along. We hope this episode inspires you and gives you some tips if perhaps you are still honing your sound or still on the way to discovering your true musical identity. Do get in touch and let us know the things that have most helped you to develop your sound.

The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 13 - Making a great music video as an Independent Artist

Visuals and music videos are an integral part of marketing for any Independent Artist. Whereas they used to be a luxury, these days we'd say they are essential to tell the story of your art, deliver a compelling asset to accompany your music and as a marketing tool to discover new fans. Creating a music video can seem intimidating and expensive but it doesn't have to be. In this week's episode we give you a breakdown of the process from conception to delivery, some points and tips to keep in mind and some approaches we've found useful in our experience. The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 12 - Responding to Racism and the Black Lives Matter movement as an artist

The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 12 - Responding to Racism and the Black Lives Matter movement as an artist

As two women of colour who run I Am Independent we have felt the pain and also the hopefulness of recent events both personally and collectively. We have talked with each other a lot about our processing and our thoughts and feelings on the subject - so it felt only right to extend this conversation to the podcast.
It feels like the whole world is finally waking up right now to the pain and struggle of Black people and there is much pain, revelation, learning and unlearning being undertaken. Many Black artists have experienced racism from within the music industry despite it undeniably benefiting from and profiting from Black Culture.
As is our way, and arguably our role, as artists many will want to process and express what they are feeling, discovering and living through their art. But how do we do this appropriately? How can we sing songs of an experience we've not had? Should we even? How can we make sure we're not just adding to 'noise' or virtue signalling or being tokenistic? In this week's episode we share some of our thoughts on all this and more.

The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 10 - Joshua Luke Smith

We love sharing Independent Artist's journeys with you. We think it's one of the most powerful and useful ways to learn, be inspired, be encouraged and pick up some valuable advice. All of that is true of our guest this week, Joshua Luke Smith. Joshua is a Poet, Spoken Word Artist, Rapper, Song writer, Producer and entrepreneur with a mandate to 'Speak into Chaos'. Joshua has been signed to a label and is now independent. He also runs an Independent label in the South West of England called Orphan No More. Joshua has so much wisdom for you in this episode and so much encouragement. One of our favourite points he makes is encouraging Independent artists to realise how important their work is and to distinguish your 'work' from your 'job'. Be inspired and enjoy!

The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 6 - 5 ways to Tour

The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 6 - 5 ways to Tour

Continuing with our 'Five ways' series, this week we're covering touring. We get asked about touring a lot. Many independent artists seem to think touring is not an option if you're near the beginning of your journey or don't yet have a big following. However, ironically, touring is one of the key ways to develop your following, to hone your skills, to test out songs and to gain valuable experience. In fact, the benefits are endless and touring really is an essential part of actually being an artist. Yes, it can involve a lot of planning, a lot of travelling and a lot of money but... it doesn't have too. There are many ways to tour without breaking the bank and by starting small and manageable. We hope these 5 tips will at least get you thinking about what's possible. For more information on touring watch some of the videos on our YouTube Channel.

The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 3 - Coronavirus: An Independent Artist Survival Guide

The I Am Independent Podcast - Series 2 - Episode 3 - Coronavirus: An Independent Artist Survival Guide

We felt it was appropriate for us to address the Coronavirus pandemic from the perspective of Independent Artists. Obviously everyone is affected, but artists are probably not at the forefront of people's minds regarding those hit by the issue. Rightly so, our minds should be first with the more vulnerable members of society who are most likely to fall ill in a dangerous way from the illness. However, artists are also greatly affected in terms of having gigs and tours cancelled and the uncertainty of any income over the coming months as self-employed people.
On a more positive note, we also believe that artists have a great and important part to play in this current crisis. Artists offer hope, understanding and a voice to fears and concerns which give people something to turn to through their music - just like they have always done in the history or world crises. The fact that many artists, and of course music consumers, are social distancing and self-isolating presents a unique opportunity to reach out online to new and existing fans with your music. The music does not have to stop in fact it is so needed at this time. We hope this episode gives you some practical tips as well as some encouragement.
