Sierra Donor Services (SDS) serves nearly three million people across Northern California and Northern Nevada. They are a team of professionals dedicated to saving and improving lives by connecting organ and tissue donations to the patients who need them. Family, did you know that one organ donor can save as many as eight lives. One tissue donor can improve the lives of 75 or more people. Dwayne Wilson is a devoted and energetic Donate Life Ambassador who had to leave his career as an NBA equipment manager when his chronic heart condition led to the need for a transplant. Luckily Wilson received a heart transplant in 2021 and has never felt better. Michael Coleman is Sierra Donor Services’ (SDS) Director of External Affairs, has a passion for sharply increasing the number of registered organ and tissue donors and ultimately eliminating the organ transplant wait list. Ep. 2407 My Grief Journey and Tribute to Taylor McClure

Ep. 2407 My Grief Journey and Tribute to Taylor McClure

Hey family, this episode of Full Circle was a hard one, but I know the Full Circle Family has my back.  As you may know by now, I lost my beautiful niece Taylor back in January. It has been difficult to say the least. As I process through my emotions, I thought it would only be right to share what I’ve learned over the past 6 weeks no only for my own healing, it’s my way of offering encouragement to anyone else who may be going through a difficult time. Grief is not limited to one thing or type of experience, whether it’s the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, job, or other security, I pray sharing my experience will help you tap into your own resilience and healing. That’s what Full Circle is all about…we’re family! Sharing is definitely caring. Tune in as I pay tribute to the amazing woman who is Taylor Lynn McClure and the impact she left on this world. Taylor was instrumental in creating the ASHÉ Center at Sacramento City College, creating space for black students to build community, receive mentoring, guidance and other services.  Taylor is an entrepreneur, community activist and advocate, a photographer with a great eye and a wonderful young woman who never met a stranger. I am proud of her and extremely heartbroken at the same time. Taylor created a podcast called Blue Cup Convos, which is available on Spotify. Hear the final episode of Blue Cup Convos, a compilation of some of her most powerful episodes, on Ms. Wanda's Full Circle podcast page. Ep. 2406 A Conversation on Education Equity with Urban Advocates and Achievers

Ep. 2406 A Conversation on Education Equity with Urban Advocates and Achievers

Birthed out of founder Alecia K. Eugene’s traumatic 5-year experience serving as a Trustee on the Twin Rivers School Board, Urban Advocates and Achievers is dedicated to creating the “Pipeline-to-College and 21st Century Career Technical Opportunities” by advocating for students and families in underserved areas.

According to a 2021 study published by the American Psychological Association, “Black students are often subject to harsher discipline at school than white students, and those punishments can damage students’ perceptions of their school and negatively impact their academic success” feeding right into the school-to-prison pipeline.

Hear how UAA is closing the education gap by providing students and families with a holistic and personalized approach that empowers and uplifts both the student and their family in their pursuit of academic achievement, excellence, educational equity, and economic sustainability.

Tune in to hear my conversation with Founder and CEO Alecia Eugene and Deputy Director of Operations and Development, Jackie Buchanan as we discuss how UAA helps parents navigate the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process, advocates for education equity and what they are doing to close the education gap for all students. UAA offers many programs to support students and families, including their phenomenal STEM/STEAM program which is also designated as a chapter member by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).

They are making a difference! No matter where you are located, UAA can support your student/family.

Bonus Episode: My Thyroid Cancer Journey

Bonus Episode: My Thyroid Cancer Journey

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, a time when I look back and reflect with much gratitude on the experience I had over 20 years ago. As I say on the show, there is someone on the other side of your story, so I wanted to end the month sharing my Thyroid Cancer story with you.

Around 76% of Black people are likely to be diagnosed with local thyroid cancer compared to 68% of White people. The 5-year relative survival rate is almost 100% for localized papillary, follicular, and medullary thyroid cancers. For localized anaplastic thyroid cancer, the 5-year relative survival rate is 39%.

Family, I hope that by sharing my story, you will a bit of draw hope, inspiration to face whatever obstacle comes your way.

Ep. 2340 - Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness

Ep. 2340 - Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness

September is National Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month. Sickle cell anemia, or sickle cell disease (SCD), is the most common form of inherited blood disorder. SCD and Sickle Cell Trait impacts African Americans at disproportionate rates.  Here's some facts:

  • Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) occurs among about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births.
  • SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births.
  • About 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with sickle cell trait (SCT).

As you can see, this disease greatly impacts our community and at this time there is no known cure.

Hear my conversation with guest who provide first-hand experience with this devastating disease.

Lorena Belcher: Mother of a SCD Warrior. Lorena shares her story of parenting a child who is living with the disease and the impacts on her family.

Kamilah Bailey: Kamilah shares her journey living with SCD, including surpassing all of the limitations her doctors told her she would never do, like going to college out of state, having a successful career and even having a child. Won't He do it!

Ylan Hunt: Ylan is also a SCD Warrior and community health provider. Ylan shares her experiences living with SCD. In addition, Ms. Hunt has the unique opportunity as a mental health provider to bring her personal experience to help bring a cultural connection to patients.

Ep. 2308 - Joyous Black Girl Movement

What brings you joy? How are you incorporating joy into your life every day?

Family, I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation on Saturday’s episode of Full Circle with the co-founders of the Joyous Black Girl Movement. They created Joyous Black Girl Movement with a mission is to create collective intergenerational spaces where Black Women can have honest conversations, build community, and invest in their joy.

Tune in to hear my conversation with Kendall Dominique and Mimi Carter as we discussed what joy looks like, the need for black women to incorporate joy into our lives, giving ourselves permission to experience joy in our lives, and what expressions of joy look like.

Join the movement!

Ep. 2306 - Shawn L. Brown - Evolution

What a deeply powerful conversation between Shawn L. Brown and myself, it’s always a good time when we get together. The theme for the show was “Evolution” and how all of us are on an evolving journey. Shawn is a woman who has a calling in her heart and a mission lodged deep in her soul to “Unite and Change the World” so that we can all live well together, play well together, and just be.
