Technology has been the focal point of conversation across every industry in the past year, not the least of which has been the field of architecture. In this episode, Jack Chaffin, architect and principal at Seattle-based Johnston Architects, talks about how the firm is leveraging new technologies to enhance their designs and bring a greater level of engagement to their projects. He highlights the Winthrop Library in Winthrop, WA, as an example of how the firm deployed proprietary software to more effectively gather feedback from the larger community to make the project successful and more equitable.

The second article published on February 28th and titled, “More Experts Sound off on the EC3,” was written by independent climate consultant Jon Strassner, who interviewed Perkins&Will D.C.’s Senior Technical Coordinator and Senior Associate Brittany McNairy, and Parallel Sustainability’s VP of Operations Rebecca Backer, to get their “how-to’s” on using the calculator to better understand and achieve climate impacts.

Amber Pickett Wernick, director of practice development, Perkins&Will, Dallas
Award-winning interior designer and strategist Amber Pickett Wernick joined the Dallas studio of global architecture and design firm Perkins&Will as director of practice development in June of 2023. Wernick, a Dallas native who worked for Perkins&Will between 2008 and 2015, returned to the firm to play a key role in client engagement, identifying new opportunities that grow the studio’s interior design practice.
As director of practice development, Wernick oversees all phases of interior design projects while nurturing client relationships and fostering collaboration. With an emphasis on research and innovation, Wernick develops design solutions that align with the social, cultural, and functional goals of each client. She also serves as a leader in the studio, working to support and advance the development of fellow designers.
Wernick has a strong foundation in the firm’s values and brings more than 14 years of experience in workplace, education, residential, and healthcare interiors. Her portfolio includes the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago, the Stanford University campus in Redwood City, and lululemon’s global headquarters in Vancouver.

The Biophilic Portal: Wellness Inspires Winning Pod Design
It should come as no surprise that there is a movement to redefine and promote wellness across the landscape of the built environment—from our cities, schools, workplaces, homes and just about every space between.
