What's Roasting? OMG, Jill Turns 36! There's absolutely no way we're gonna let our girl's birthday pass without doing an episode for her. So we took a break from taking a break to record this very special episode where we're joined by Jill's boyfriend, Trevor. What's Jill like as a girlfriend? What’s Roasting? 35 Burning Questions for Roes' 35th Birthday!

What’s Roasting? Roes' Birthday Special!

Special episode drop!

1/3 of the Ihaw Ihaw crew is celebrating their birthday today, and we could not let it pass without publishing a special birthday episode. Trivia alert! It was actually Roes who came up with our fun segment in the show, so Jill thought we would turn the table around and ask Roes 35 burning questions for his 35th birthday. How well did he do? You gotta listen to find out. And of course, it would not be an Ihaw Ihaw birthday episode without a surprise. So make sure you stick around until the end.

Happy, happy birthday, our dear Roes!

What’s Roasting? Filipino Doctors 2-Part Special (2/2)

Two for Two!

For part 2 of our Pinoy Doctors Abroad Special, we linked up with two Filipino doctors currently based in the United States. Both hailing from the University of the Philippines, Dr. Denise Sese joined us from Ohio while Dr. Nico Cabrera is in California. We talked about their journey to becoming medical practitioners in the US, the challenges they face in their profession especially in the time of Covid, the phenomenon that is "brain drain" in the Philippines, their plans for the foreseeable future, and a lot more in between. This is the first time for most of us to meet, but it sure did not feel that way as we had so much fun talking that it seemed like we've known each other for a while. Join the conversation by listening in and sounding off in the comments section and our DMs!

What’s Roasting? Trying Hard as an LGBT Filipino!

What’s Roasting? Trying Hard as an LGBT Filipino!

Filipinos thriving in their new life abroad? We love to see it. LGBTQIA+ movies and tv shows going mainstream? We love to see it. A Filipino making and starring in an LGBTQIA+ show?

WE. LOVE. TO. SEE. IT.

Created by and starring Maki Bonifacio, "Trying Hard" is a comedy web series that follows the intimate story of Maki – a gay person of color from the Philippines working and living in Nashville, Tennessee. Your Ihaw Ihaw Crew sat down with Maki to talk about how and why he created Trying Hard, how he ended up in the US, building his social network, and many other super interesting stuff. Talking to Maki was like talking to an old friend. It was so casual and fun that it felt more like catching up than doing an interview.

Filipinos supporting each other? We love to see it.

What’s Roasting? The Filipino Singing Talent!

What’s Roasting? The Filipino Singing Talent!

Robinson’s Place Manila. Karaoke. YouTube. The Voice Philippines. X Factor UK. Alisah Bonaobra

Yep! Our super special guest this week is none other than the voice that first captured the attention of mallgoers in Metro Manila and eventually rocked and conquered the stage of X Factor UK. Definitely not an easy feat. It is no question that Alisah has soared to greater heights from her humble beginnings in the capital city. Yet this sweet girl from Paco with the voice of a (powerful) angel remains grounded, approachable, and relatable.

Aside from Alisah’s unquestionable talent, your Ihaw Ihaw Crew was blown away by her personality and charm. It’s as if we were talking to an old friend instead of interviewing a star. We talked to Alisah about how her life has changed since her singing video went viral few years ago, her experience in talent shows, and her dreams. And of course, it would not be an Alisah episode without the singing! She even gave us a sample of her new single, “Gintong Tinig.” So stop reading and click that play button. This episode is absolutely packing! #IhawWithAlisah

What’s Roasting? The Homecoming!

What’s Roasting? The Homecoming!

A famous Gary V. song in the ‘90s goes something like, “Kaytagal mo nang nawala, babalik ka rin.” (You might have been gone a long time, but still you will come back.)

And for the first time on Ihaw Ihaw Show, the crew will talk about coming home to the motherland after having worked and stayed abroad for a considerable amount of time. Given the changes in immigration policies across the world, some might argue that it’s now easier to move permanently to a different country or even just change jobs from one place to another. So why do Filipinos still come back to the Philippines? What circumstances push someone who has already experienced life abroad to move back to their hometown? What’s the adjustment like? And ultimately, is there really life back in Pearl of the Orient after being gone for long?

This week’s special guest, Marketing whiz Anjo Dapilan, walks us through his journey back to the Philippines after working in Thailand for three years.  Anjo tries to answer our questions above and shed light on other related matters in this brand-new episode of the podcast. #IhawWithAnjo

What’s Roasting? Promoting Peace in Today's World!

What’s Roasting? Promoting Peace in Today's World!

Ihawaiians, let’s get serious for one second and think about this question: What does peace mean to you?

In this episode, we are joined by Center for Peace and Conflict Studies’ (CPCS) Applied Conflict Transformation Studies (ACTS) course manager Joseph Ajero to talk about Peace Building and Conflict Transformation (yep, we’re well-rounded like that). Together with our first guest based in Cambodia , we zone in on the importance of peace and development work. We also talk about his experience living in Siem Reap and what to do if you want to visit the Angkor Wat for free! :)

We love having these kinds of conversations because it’s when we step out of our comfort zones that we grow, and we have so much fun in the process. After all, it’s not Ihaw Ihaw Show if it doesn’t involve laughter. #IhawWithJoseph

What’s Roasting? Taking Risks and Braving the World!

Imagine this: you’re a single Filipino in your 20’s, on the pinnacle of your career working for one of the most well-known brands in the world, and living in Singapore, nonetheless. Not a bad life, don’t you think?

Now imagine this: you leave it all behind and move to Denmark. Nope, this is not a made-up scenario. This is exactly the path our guest has chosen to take.

Ihawaiians, meet Liz Lagrimas, the woman whose life we kind of described above. If it is not apparent yet, this episode is all about taking risks. How did she do it? What challenges did she encounter?  What’s her life in Denmark like now?  Listen in to find out all the answers to these questions and learn about risking it out. #IhawWithLiz

What’s Roasting? Second Gen Canadian Actor!

What’s Roasting? Second Gen Canadian Actor!

In the past two seasons of your Ihaw Ihaw Show, we've featured guests holding different kinds of jobs. We've had a lawyer, humans rights advocate, social media influencer, a CEO and so on.   With the 3 of us having dabbled in acting one way or another, its a bit puzzling to imagine we've never guested an actor in the podcast. Well, that changes now.

Our guest this week is Jill's second cousin. A second-gen Filipino Canadian, Dave Dimapilis is an actor/producer/host/director who strives to promote ethnic diversity within Film, Television and Digital Media in Vancouver and the US.

Click play and learn about Dave's experience in the industry with your favorite Ihaw Ihaw crew. #IhawWithDave

What's Roasting? Dream Guests!

Brand new season, brand new episode!

While we’re still over the moon about the fact that we’ve already finished 2 seasons (!!!), your Ihaw Ihaw crew thought we’d talk about the people we’d love to have on the show. Anchored on the philosophy of “The Secret” (and maybe six degrees of separation), each of us came up with lists of our “dream guests” in the hopes that by putting it out there, they would eventually come true. So who do we want on the show, listen and find out!

What’s Roasting? Darcy Lalonde, The Other Way!

AFAM. A Foreigner Assigned in Manila.

For a show about foreigners living abroad, it was only a matter of time until we had an AFAM guest in our podcast. But this episode’s special invitee is not just any other AFAM. Originally from Canada, Darcy Lalonde has been investing in the Philippines for almost two decades now, focusing on the BPO, information technology and tourism sectors. He is deeply passionate about Philippines and local Filipino talents. Darcy shares with us his insights about the economy, what makes Filipinos special, his favorite things about the Philippines and a lot more.

Our AFAM guest is truly one of a kind. Listen to our conversation with him to find out more. #IhawWithDarcy

Law. Filipino Food. Signs. Monster mosquitoes. Kulambo. Subway. Handwriting. Central Park wedding. New York City.

How are all these related or are they even related at all?

In one of our liveliest episodes ever, we are joined by Atty. Yas Sanchez-Hereira all the way from the Big Apple. She takes us on her journey from being a PR/Media executive to becoming a lawyer in the greatest city in the world. This one is full of surprises and filled with insights and laughs. What’s Roasting? Staying Grounded and Connected with the Philippines!

What’s Roasting? Staying Grounded and Connected with the Philippines!

If there is one thing that binds us Filipinos, no matter where we are, it is our undying love for the Motherland. Some may argue that the Philippines is currently experiencing turbulent times, and the nation has never been more divided. But if we are not known for our resilience, then we are not known for anything else. Whew. That was heavy.

In this episode, the Ihaw Ihaw Crew together with our special guest, former spokesperson & program manager for the anti-poverty programs for the Office of the Vice President Leni Robredo, Georgina Hernandez-Yang, discuss the importance of staying connected with the Philippines while living abroad. Georgina joins us from Boston, Massachusetts, and she sheds light on how and why it is critical to be informed and involved with what is happening back home.  If it sounds a tad too serious, it is because it is, but we made sure to keep it light and fun, as you’ve come to expect from us.

What’s Roasting? Philippine Men's Volleyball!

Special guests have been pouring in, and we love it!

Arguably the biggest name in Philippine Volleyball at the moment, Bryan Bagunas graces the Ihaw Ihaw show to talk about how he started with the sport, the impact the Philippine Men’s Volleyball Team has had in the nation, his life in Japan as an import, and more. We had a great time chatting with the big guy with an even bigger heart, on and off the court, in this episode; and we’re 100% sure you will love it too.

What’s Roasting? Global Influence with a Smile!

SMILE AND THE WORLD SMILES BACK AT YOU.

This episode's special guest may not be a Filipino based abroad, but he definitely brings to the table his extensive background in experiencing life in another country. He also happens to make people smile along the way.

This one is nothing but positive vibes as we are joined by vlogger and YouTube sensation Markian Benhamou, who made it his life mission to create smiles and spread happiness. We went on a journey with Markian as he relayed his experience living in several countries and founding Smile Squad. He also shared his experience when he visited the Philippines, and his special love for the Filipino fans.

Listen to this episode and you will find yourself smiling from ear to ear, making the world a better place simply by doing that.

Ayee Macaraig.

Ring a bell? For Filipinos who like to keep abreast with the latest in the Philippines and the world, the name Ayee Macaraig is synonymous with top-notch journalism. But if you’ve been wondering where she’s been the past few months, well, your Ihaw Ihaw crew has found her and got to talk to her about living in Europe as a student.  Currently in Denmark to pursue a master’s degree in Journalism, Media and Globalisation under an Erasmus Mundus scholarship from the EU, we had such informative and fun discussion about the importance of being a journalist in this day and age, the challenges of living abroad as a master’s student, getting one of the world’s best scholarship award, and much more.

You wanted to learn more about being a student abroad, and we heard you. Now we’re giving it to you.

What’s Roasting? Living the MasterChef Dream!

What’s Roasting? Living the MasterChef Dream!

From the Philippines/Canada to the world. Literally.

Our country has always been known to be home to many great talents, and we are super honored and excited to have one of those in this episode. Fans of the
MasterChef franchise would easily recognize Mr. Jeremy Senaris as one of the two Filipinos who brought pride to the country in season 3 of MasterChef Canada. Jeremy shared with us what's it like to be in the spotlight, his motivations in choosing to feature Pinoy food in the competition, and what a typical meal in a chef's household is.

As the saying goes, this one is for the (cook)books.

What's Roasting? Season 1 Ender!

We did it!

When we first conceptualized the show, one of our goalposts was to make it through six episodes, which we've decided to be one season. And we did. Just. That.

So to celebrate, we played a game and had so much fun.  Sorry, no moving abroad related content here, but we promise a lot of laughs. Did someone have to lick their foot? Lol.

We made it, and we couldn't have without our loyal Ihawaiians. Enjoy this one!

What’s Roasting? Fresh off the Boat!

What’s Roasting? Fresh off the Boat!

So what does Fresh off the Boat actually mean? Our fifth episode revolves around this idiom and its meaning, obvious and latent alike, for us overseas-based Filipinos. Should we cry foul when we are described as such? Or should we just embrace and put a positive spin on it?

We are so happy and honored to feature our second guest, Dax Carnay, who is a fresh-off-the-boat resident in Australia, and a college orgmate and friend of the Ihaw Ihaw Crew. We explored their one-of-a-kind journey from auditioning to be a Hong Kong Disneyland artist to eventually deciding to live in Melbourne with their long-term partner; without the chance of having a proper despedida gathering with friends and even family!

We also enjoyed their answers during the Fresh or Not segment. With all the crazy things happening around the world today, this episode will totally entertain and even offer a fresh perspective.

What’s Roasting? Living Abroad as a Health Worker!

Health is Wealth may be a completely overused statement. But with how Covid-19  shookt the world, it is but fitting to revisit our take on the fundamental significance of health. In this episode,  your Ihaw Ihaw crew is joined by an overseas Filipino health worker based all the way in Norway!!! That's right, another continent has been added to the coverage of Ihaw Ihaw!

How challenging is it for a health worker to be at the front line of the battle against a global pandemic? What's the process for migrating abroad as a health worker, and what are the things to remember? How hard is it to stay in the Philippines while maintaining a career in the health industry? These are all covered by our hearty discussion with Roni Reyes. And we also had fun during the Fast Talk segment!
