Episode 52 - Name Twins

Remember those little keychains or trinkets with your name on them from our youth? Yeah Kristia and Rachael don't, the struggle of having our names spelled "different." This episode we pushed ourselves to find a book with a main character who shares our name. Rachael already had a few on her shelf yet it was a struggle for Kristia. In the end, both books ended up similar with murder investigations, high school reunions, and a whole lotta drama.

Episode 51 - Plenty of Books in the Sea

With summer right around the corner there's no place we'd rather be than by the water, so we've got two water adjacent books for ya this episode. Kristia reads a book with magical youth living in an orphanage and the case worker assigned to ensure their safety. It's got plenty of character development and some twists she did not see coming. Rachael discusses a book about a recently famous podcaster coving an active murder trial. Somehow someone knows who she is and where she's staying adding to the sketchy vibes as this book alternates timelines throughout.

This Episode Kristia covers a book that was originally written in japan and recently translated to English. It's about a woman who works at a convenience store and has for 18 years. Every one in her life thinks it's odd she's still doing the same job, but for her, she knows who she is, and that's a convenience store worker.

Episode 50 - Twisted Fairytales

We all know how the story goes, price saves beautiful woman, they fall in love, she's now a beautiful princess admired by all. Adventures in a magical place that take us away from our dreary lives and we're infinitely better for it. We know them, we love them. But what if the stories we've been told aren't the whole story, what if there are darker undertones, what if they've kept the truth from us.
This episode is all about twisted fairytales. Kristia drops some hard facts on us that center around a simple truth; Peter Lies. And Rachael tells us about what happens when the princess doesn't defeat the evil queen and what becomes of the kingdom.

Episode 45 - Birthday Books

Spring, St Patty's Day, Aquamarine birthstones, Rachael & Kristia's birthdays, what more could you ask for out of a month?! As Match babies we obviously had to celebrate with all of you, so this episode we each gifted the other a book for their special day.

Rachael's got a murder mystery that's very reminiscence of Serial. It's got a very detailed senior project, a missing (presumed dead) blonde girl, small town cops, and a best friend on a mission. Also, turns out this ones got a sequel!

Kristia has a modern day witch/ghost - what better way to track a dead witch than with an iPhone. But of course the teens of the town want to fight back against an emergency degree thinking they know better than the thousands who have come before them. Bad things happen.

Banned Book Week starts on the 27th this year, to celebrate we're talking about two recent books that have been challenged and banned multiple times. Rachael's book was published in 2007, and was the most challenged book of 2017. The book is centered around suicide, so we understand why people may think it glorified suicide, but we believe it's too important of a story to banned.
Suicide TW: If you want to skip this book, start at 33:00

Kristia's book was published in 2017 and spent the first two years in the top ten banned books. It's often challenged and banned due to it's "vulgar language," "racially-insensitive language," and for "being anti-police." This story is also too important to be banned, these books should be read and discussed by students so they can gain a better understanding of these tough topics.

Episode 26 - Medical Non-Fiction

Episode 26 - Medical Non-Fiction

This week there was an unexpected additional theme. We had planned for non-fiction but we both ended up picking one that was heavy in science and medicine. While non-fiction isn't our usual go to we decided to branch out and challenge ourselves.

Rachael reads a book by a retired surgeon about his career, that is full of information we, as patients, should know. While Kristia tackles a story about what can happen when a doctor takes our cells and uses them to greatly advance the medical world, without our or our families knowledge.

Guest appears by the ever lovely Moxxie. Each book comes with the R&K approvals so make sure you're in a quiet place and come learn with us!

Books Discussed:
Do No Harm by  Henry Marsh
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by Rebecca Skloot

PS: Kristia's mic officially died, so apologies about the poor audio quality this week

🎵As our lives change - come whatever - we will still be - friends forever🎵

This episode with so many students graduating in these weird times we decided to tackle some Coming of Age Stories. Grab a drink and buckle in, because Kristia controlled the majority of this episode with some mind bending time travel that will have you wishing for 3 more books. Rachael covers a classic from our childhood evolving kids from the wrong side of the tracks, some state fruits, perfectly placed fires, and a hurricane?

Quarantine Crime Fiction

Quarantine Crime Fiction

It's a thing now!

This month's minis are brought to you by Audible Originals (yes, those again) because Ben H. Winters came out with three amazing mini stories about the crimes that could be happening while we're all stuck at home.

This episode we're covering what could happen when a newly single woman tries every hobby she never had time to do and stumbles upon a possible murder! Or is it just the cabin fever that's getting to her.

Listen and find out!

Episode 23 - As Seen on TV

Episode 23 - As Seen on TV

This week we searched for books our favorite TV characters are reading and turns out they read a lot of classics, or pretend to read that is. We've got quite the variety this episode, from a childhood favorite where the main character searches for answers to a dark classic set in the 50's that covers women's mental health and the struggles of being different.

TW: Rachael's entire book covers topics including suicide attempts and suicide ideation, for that reason we are recommending you do not listen to her review if these topics aren't for you. Her section begins 20 minutes in. https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/

Episode 22 - We'd Rather Be...

Episode 22 - We'd Rather Be...

We're still at home and at this point we'd really love the opportunity to be just about anywhere else. So this week we picked our books on title only, finishing the sentence I'd Rather Be ________. As you may have guessed, where our main characters end up might not be ideal. While we're all doing our part and staying home you should grab a drink, get comfy, and let us take you with us as we leave our living rooms and travel to somewhere hopefully more exciting. Stay Safe Friends.

Book Vs Movie: Worst Ever III

Book Vs Movie: Worst Ever III

The odds were NOT in our favor on this episode of worst book to movie adaptations. While Jennifer Lawrence did a great job as Katniss, Hollywood really let us down in a lot of other ways. The biggest one: the book is WAY more brutal than the movie, it is the Hunger Games after all, make it dark, we can handle it, we read the book! *Spoiler Alert: We're talking about the entire first book in this episode, so we're assuming you either read the book or at least have seen the movie and have no intentions of reading the book to find out what you missed. But maybe after you give this one a listen, you'll change your mind and go crack it open.

Book vs Movie: Worst Ever (again)

Book vs Movie: Worst Ever (again)

We're back with another book that Hollywood just had to go and ruin! There are some peculiar things going on this episode, mainly why they had to go and change a love interest (and make it icky), or even worse, why they had to change the abilities someone had. Okay, end rant. Grab a drink, you're going to need one.
