Recognizing the important roles that Indigenous Peoples have always held in protecting and stewarding nature, IMPAC5 embraces the need to heed Indigenous perspectives, voices and knowledge from around the world. The last episode of Protecting Blue Nature focuses on Indigenous peoples leadership in marine protection. Aneri Garg speaks with Belinda Webb, Nunatsiavut Government’s Deputy Minister of Language, Culture and Tourism. Webb explains her connections to the fjords, fish and ice of Nunatsiavut and the importance of Inuit knowledge holders and scientific researchers working together.

Webb, an Inuit person who works and lives in Nain, Labrador is involved in many collaborative governance and management that steward the land and water of Nunatsiavut including the feasibility assessment of creating a new IPA/National Marine Conservation Area Reserve adjacent to the Torngat Mountains National Park. Webb is also presenting at IMPAC5!

Culture, food security, commerce, and recreation are intertwined with ocean health. Individuals and communities draw incredible inspiration and sustenance from the ocean, which is expressed in all forms of cultural practices and artistic endeavors.

Magena Warrior and Patricia ‘Trish’ Nash share their unique perspectives as Indigenous marine practitioners and explain the connections between the ocean, culture and wellbeing. Warrior is a member of the IMPAC5 Young Professionals Committee and is a marine planner based in Victoria, B.C., Canada. Warrior will also be giving a speed talk at IMPAC5, be sure to search her name in CHIME. Trish Nash is the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas Program Manager for the Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources based in Eskasoni, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Le balado comprend huit épisodes avec des conversations entre les hôtes Aneri Garg et Isabelle Groc liées aux cinq thèmes et aux trois volets transversaux d'IMPAC5.

Les jeunes de toutes les nations et de tous les milieux jouent un rôle important de leadership, d'intendance et de prise de décision dans le domaine des aires marines protégées et de la conservation des océans. En tant que gardiens actuels et futurs de l'océan, les voix et les ambitions des jeunes professionnels seront entendues et reconnues tout au long du Congrès. Leur dynamisme, leur engagement en faveur de la protection marine et leurs actions garantiront la protection à long-terme des océans pour les générations futures.

L'animatrice Isabelle Groc s'informe auprès de Cécile Tang sur ce que c'est que d'être un jeune professionnel dans le domaine de la conservation. Originaire de France et de Chine mais résidant maintenant à Montréal, Tang est membre du comité des jeunes professionnelsd'IMPAC5 et cofondatrice de Youth for Wildlife Conservation.

Podcast host Garg chats with Alexander Mawyer, the director of Centre for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawaii and former editor of The Contemporary Pacific: A Journal of Island Affairs.

As a social scientist, Mawyer explains what he sees as the building blocks of building a sustainable blue economy. Reflecting on his work with the Mangeraven community in the Gambier and Society Islands of French Polynesia and Chuukese and Mortlock communities in the Federated States of Micronesia, Mawyer shares many lessons on the importance of local community-driven ocean economies.

For over 25 years Tammy Norgard has worked as a biologist on the B.C. coast with and for many Coastal First Nations. Norgard is now the Section Head of the Marine Spatial Ecology and Analysis section at Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Norgard works with researchers, Indigenous knowledge holders and community partners along the British Columbia coast to study, share and protect distinct marine ecosystems. Norgard will lead a session at IMPAC5 about building partnerships and strategies for effective monitoring of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Britt Wray is a climate psychologist and IMPAC5 keynote speaker who researches the complex array of emotions felt in the face of climate change and how we can channel emotions into collective environmental action and change.

Wray leads a Chair’s Special Initiative on Climate and Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of Stanford University School of Medicine. She holds a PhD in science communication from the University of Copenhagen and a certificate in Climate Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. She has hosted several podcasts, radio and TV programs with the BBC and CBC, is a TED speaker, and writes Gen Dread, a newsletter about finding hope on the far side of climate grief.
