Stop Chasing Winners and 2023 Open Notes
Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.
If you can STOP chasing winners, you will win more. What??? Yes. When you chase winners, you make more mistakes. When you make more mistakes, you lose more points. Simple as that.
Stick with the program: make less errors - and you will win more rallies (and games). One powerful way to do this is by going for less winners. Stop playing high risk pickleball and you will play better.
In the riff, I share with you parting notes about the 2023 US Open tournament and what I learned from playing it.

Using Your SuperComputer for Better Pickleball
Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.
"Wait, I have a super computer?" you may ask. You 100% have one. And it is powerful. Makes ChatGPT (and all computers or programs) green with envy. There is a good chance, though, that you are not using it to its fullest capabilities when you are playing pickleball.
One example: where are you aiming your serve? Specifically. Height over the net? Specifically. If you are not providing your super computer with specific instructions you cannot be surprised when it does not do what you want. It, after all, had no clear directions.
You can change this by starting to give your super computer (your brain, of course) clear directives. Each shot. You will play better pickleball.
In the riff, I share with you a personal story to help us gain context and perspective.

Partner Poaching - What to do? PLUS Limiting Distractions | Pickleball Therapy Episode 133
Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.
Partner poaching. It's part of the game - when done appropriately. But it can also be used a tool by one player to try and play an oversized role during the game. It is a particular problem in rec play when one player believes themself to be the superior player - often a misperception. In this episode we cover the basics of poaching appropriately as well as how to handle things when your partner is all up in your space. We also give you tips to avoid being that player
In the riff, I share with you some tips to avoid distractions. They are costing you points out on the pickleball court.

Avoid this Pickleball Pitfall (all shots and no framework) PLUS maintain perspective the you play | Pickleball Therapy Episode 132
Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.
Many players fall into a pitfall of their own making. Specifically, players think that they need this shot or that shot. And that the framework of the game is secondary. Nothing could be further from the truth. Think of it like this: you know how to move all the pieces on a chessboard but you do not know the way the game is constructed. Not a very good way to play chess right? Same thing happens on a pickleball court.
In the riff, I share with you some recent occurrences and look at how maintaining perspective can avoid things from spiraling downwards out there.
Hope to see some of you in class.

Do you have a Pickleball GPS guiding you? PLUS finding the "new" answer to help your game | Pickleball Therapy Episode 131
Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement.
Ever use GPS to find your way somewhere new to you? Pretty helpful right? Otherwise, you are stopping at gas stations and asking passers by where this road is or that. And forget about it if you are using a map and get turned around North to South or East to West. Be driving in circles all day.
GPS alleviates all that headache and gets you where you are going with amazing accuracy - in terms of time and location.
Works the same in pickleball. If you have a GPS system that can get you from Point A (where you are now) to Point B (where you are headed), you will save endless time and headache getting there. Plus, you can check yourself as you travel to make sure you are on the right path - the shortest course to your future pickleball self. In this episode I discuss the concept of a Pickleball GPS System for you.
In the riff, I share with you a common fallacy we engage in (no criticism as the thought is only natural): what is the "new" thing I need to improve my game? The answer is generally: nothing, you just need to get better with the "old" things.

Are you acting like "that" player out there? PLUS how to use your gratitude practice | Pickleball Therapy Episode 129
Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement.
Every pickleball player has come across that player who other players shrink from playing with: negative energy, eye rolls, verbally negative comments. Sometimes that player is us. Yikes right? Be open to the possibility that you have, from time to time, perhaps, behaved in a manner that could be improved. Might have been something as "simple" as a shoulder drop when your partner missed that put-away shot at 10-9. The bottom line is, there is always room to improve here. Check yourself next time you play.
In the riff, I share with you a recent gratitude exercise I did to help you in your own gratitude practice.

Give Yourself Permission to be Good PLUS you are playing the same pickleball game that I (as a Senior Pro) play | Pickleball Therapy Episode 128
Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement.
It can sometimes be difficult for players to accept success; to give themselves permission to enjoy the good they do in their games. Here's the thing, be evenhanded about it. I guarantee that when you make that mistake, or let that lead evaporate, you let yourself know how you messed up - you may even be hard on yourself about it. Why not do the same when you play a good game or hit that good shot? Take the same energy that you use when you mess up and apply it when you do the right thing. It's only fair right?
In the riff I talk to you about how you are playing the same game as the pros (including me as a Senior Pro player). The same shots that are important to your game are important to our game. Including the "simple" shots, like a deep return of serve. Want to play better pickleball? Then get the simple things down pat. And grow from there.
Miniseries tickets become available on March 9, 2023. If you are already on our mail list you will get an invite in the mail (email that is :)). Find your sweetspot when you play (not the paddle :)) PLUS let's sort out the serve rules - you can spin the serve | Pickleball Therapy | Episode 126
There is a sweetspot when we play pickleball. Not the paddle (though that one exists too) – your sweetspot. Finding that place from where you are going to play your best and keeping it takes practice. In this episode we explain the concept of finding that edge and then give you some tips to keep it where you want. Understanding your energy level will help you avoid overheating or playing lackluster.
And what about those serve rules? We are getting asked all the time about them. Can you still spin the serve? In this week’s episode we dive into this confusing area and clear it up for you.

Is practice not translating to better play? Let us help with that | PLUS the underperforming "winning" player | Pickleball Therapy | Episode 125
If you are on the road to improvement, it can feel sometimes like you are stuck in a rut. Specifically, you have been practicing this shot or technique but when the game starts, it disappears. It feels like you are wasting your time.
In this episode of Pickleball Therapy, we look at it three ways:
1. How do the reps of the shot or skill you are working on compare to the reps of your existing shot or skill? Bet you it is not even close.
2. We give you a tip you can use so that you put that new shot or skill into action the next time you play. A concrete step you can take out there.
3. Context is always helpful. It provides us with the perspective to more clearly understand the path we are on; the fastest way to short circuit frustration. Are you clear on your context?
During the riff, we take a look at that “winning” player at your local facility. Are they, perhaps, actually an underperforming player? Find out during the podcast. A different way of thinking about the game.

Play pickleball for the reason you play pickleball | PLUS calling illegal serves (and other faults) | Pickleball Therapy | Episode 123
Each of us has a core reason why we play pickleball. Perhaps it is exercise. Or fun. Or social outing. Whatever your reason is for playing pickleball is the quid pro quo deal you strike each time you head to the courts. Avoid the temptation to lose sight of it once you get out there. Focus on the real reason you play and you will have a better and more productive relationship with pickleball - and you will also play better to boot.
In the riff I talk about those darned illegal serves. They ruin the game - or do they? Gain a different perspective about illegal serves and other fault calls. Could mean the difference between a great day on court and a needless argument.

How to play with open play partners who do not play "right" | PLUS hitting shots when you see the game - the ATP story | Pickleball Therapy | Episode 122
When we are playing recreational play, it can be frustrating when we get partnered with a player who just does not play "right." In this episode we talk about what to do when we are playing with such a partner as well as other situations that come up where we are in a position that is not what we want. Remember, you can only control that which you can control.
I also share with you the ATP (around the post) story to illustrate how slowing ourselves down out there can let us see the game better and, maybe, even hit an ATP :).

Journey to Gold | PLUS Mental Strength to Right the Ship | Pickleball Therapy | Episode 116
In this week's podcast I share some of myself with you. More specifically, some of my pickleball journey. From first hitting a pickleball through the medal stand in Senior Mixed Pro at this last weekend's PPA tournament in Orlando. I share it with you so that you know two things:
1. You can achieve whatever your goal is in pickleball and
2. As long as you remain curious, there is always more to learn - more to grow - in pickleball.
In the riff, I share with you how we handled being up 10-5 with a putaway shot in the gold medal match to being down 10-11 in the same game.

Avoid confusing loss with failure - they are different | PLUS What happens when you get hit with the ball? | Pickleball Therapy | Episode 114
Oftentimes when we lose a game we feel like we failed. The same is true when we win: we feel like we succeeded. This, however, wrongly conflates success/failure with winning/losing.
Here is the thing, though, you can fail completely and still win and you can 100% succeed and still lose.
Think of a pro match at the highest level. All players are highly skilled and can hit all the shots, so to speak. Yet one team wins and one team loses. Every single match ends like this. Is that a failure by the losing team? Perhaps the losing team did everything they could to their best of their ability (a success) yet still lost.
It may help to think of it like this. You and your partner are very good 3.5 players. Across the net are two 2.5 players who have trouble hitting the ball over the net. You can play your worst game this year and still win. And they can do everything within their power as well as they can and still lose.
The winning by your team and the losing by the other team tells us nothing about how you played. Or about how they played. It actually provides wrong information if used as a performance metric as it says your team did good and the other team did not. When the reality is completely opposite.
The win/loss column is a result - nothing more.
Success/failure, on the other hand relates to how you played and your execution of your game plan that day. It revolves around your process.
Conflating win/loss with success/failure can lead you to reach the wrong conclusions about your play and, importantly, your improvement as a player.
In this week's episode we discuss this important difference. Credit to Dr. Todd Kays the author of Sports Psychology for Dummies from where we drew the inspiration for this week's podcast. Confident pickleball is knowing pickleball – do you know? | PLUS An actionable first step to knowing | Pickleball Therapy | Episode 113
Confidence is “a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities.” Two parts then that we need to feel confident on the pickleball court: (a) ability and (b) appreciation of this ability. The result: feeling of self-assurance.
You know what destroys our confidence? Doubt. More specifically, doubt in our ability.
Doubt can originate from one of two places: either you lack the ability and know it or you do not know what abilities you are supposed to have and so doubt in the dark, so to speak. This latter one is doubt that arises from the doubt itself.
So, what can we do about it? Can we take steps to improve our confidence out on the pickleball court?
The good news is “yes.” You can gain more self-assurance on the court and, in so doing, quiet the doubts in your mind. This quiet will, in turn, allow you play even better and better pickleball.
Before you can work on the thing you want to do better, you have to know what it is and how to do it properly.
If you do not know where to start, click here. It will start you down a path of clear and actionable knowledge. Start applying it to your game and your confidence will climb. Even when you miss a shot you will be able to say “I know what happened there.” That is self-assurance.

In this episode we give you several tips you can use to improve your focus - while giving you the proper framing: focus will come and focus will go. It is part of any athlete's experience.
In the riff, we talk about an 11-9 game vs an 11-6 or even 11-3 game. They may feel the same, but are they? Proper perspective can help you better appreciate your efforts (as well as those of your opponents) out on the courts. Let us know if it works for you!

Two Tips Straight From the Best Pros | PLUS Frame your game in gratitude | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball | Episode 111
The best is when the lessons from the top pro players are things that can help us in our games and also things that are achievable by us - not matter our level. I had the opportunity to speak with two of the two senior pros in pickleball at the recent APP tournament in Hilton Head, SC. Scott Crandal and Jose Derisi had come back to win the gold medal in the men's senior pro division the day before. I asked each of them, separately, for their perspective.
I asked Scott how he approached pickleball. His answer: fundamentals - that word that makes players run away. I asked Jose for one piece of advice he had for new players. He said that players should not try to win the rally in one shot. Instead, work the rally and wait for your opportunity.
In the riff, we talk about framing the game with gratitude from the start. You will feel better and play better. Give it a try next time you play.

Sometimes we lose sight of the bowl of ice cream that we have in front of us. We did not get sprinkles, or fudge, or whipped cream in our ice cream. Does that make the bowl of ice cream any less delicious? Reframing our relationship with pickleball can help us not only feel better about our games. It can make the difference in how we play on the court. Keeping a healthy mind is your most powerful ally when you play.
In the riff, I share some thoughts about those points that can change a game. Sometimes you are up and just lose that little bit to focus. Next thing you know you lost the game. Sometimes you are behind but with a bit of focus you can snatch victory fro the jaws of defeat. Understanding these pivotal points in a game can make all the difference.

How do you play with a partner who does not see things your way? | PLUS how to know you are doing it right | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball | Episode 108
One of the best aspects of pickleball is open play. As a social sport, we get to play with pickleball players from all sorts of backgrounds and walks of life. While this is usually great, there are times when playing with "random" pickleball partners drawn from a stack of paddles can prove challenging.
In this week's episode we answer a question (and it is one we hear fairly regularly) about playing with different pickleball partners, particularly when your partner may see pickleball strategy the same as you. My guess is that if you are listening to this podcast, you know us otherwise, in which case I am sure your strategy is the correct one. But there will be times when your partner may think differently. What then?
In the riff, I share with you a personal story about doing it wrong - and then right. To help you stay on the right track.
Check out Episode 108 of Pickleball Therapy – the Podcast dedicated to Your Pickleball Improvement – and solve the vexing puzzle of the partner who sees it different.

Prepare to play your best pickleball out there | PLUS Losing is a learning proposition | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball | Episode 106
When we think of winning as getting to 11 first and losing as when our opponents get to 11 before we do, we rob ourselves of the benefits that can come from score losing a game. The only way we grow as pickleball players is when we are pushed to do so - this often means losing in terms of the score in a game or match. Take advantage of these growth opportunities by focusing on what you can do to improve as opposed to just the L that you get after that "loss."
In the riff, we get into what it means to compete. What is the right bar for you to set for yourself when you are out on the pickleball courts.

This is BAD Advice - Don't do it | PLUS how to spot BAD advice in the future | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball | Episode 104
All pickleball players have received advice about how to play the game, particularly when we were beginner pickleball players. Some of the advice is good: how to score a pickleball game, where to stand when your partner is returning serve (hopefully at the Non-Volley Line), etc. But there is also some bad (as well as at least not always applicable advice): forehand takes the middle, do not cross the middle of the court to hit a ball, etc. The worst one of all – the one we take aim at in this week’s podcast: when the third shot is being hit rush up to the Non-Volley Zone Line.
“Rush up to the kitchen” is some of the most damaging advice that new players are taught. Not only is it often the wrong pickleball strategy under the circumstances, it can have long term damaging effects on the player. Specifically, players become habituated to just running forward to the kitchen no matter what, over and over. When they finally learn the correct pickleball strategy, they have a hard time breaking this ingrained bad pickleball habit.
Check out Episode 104 of Pickleball Therapy – the Podcast dedicated to Your Pickleball Improvement – to learn more about this piece of wrong pickleball “strategy” as well as learn some tips to skirt future bad advice (you will get some).

Maximize Your Work and Avoid Time Wastes | PLUS 5 things I would not do as a pickleball professional | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball | Episode 103
None of us has unlimited time in our days, and certainly not unlimited time to work on our pickleball games. If we want to play our best pickleball, we must prioritize the areas of our game that are most important; those that will give us the biggest bang for our buck.
For example, the third shot drop. Is it an important pickleball shot? Of course it is. But not always. For many players, the third shot drop is unnecessary – for now. Let’s say you are missing punch volleys into the net or wide or you play against bangers but do not know how to let out balls go. In either of these cases, the third shot drop should not even be on your list of shots to improve. Probably not even Top 10.
If you are in this large group of players where the third shot drop is not Top 10 then whatever time you are working on the third shot drop is not being used for its best purpose. You are better off identifying the areas that will give you the greatest advantage and working on those.
Check out Episode 103 of Pickleball Therapy – the Podcast dedicated to Your Pickleball Improvement – to learn more about prioritizing your game. You will also get Tony’s Top 5 things he would NOT do now that he is a pickleball professional.

Getting coached at the courts? What to do? | PLUS what if you want to give advice to a player? | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball | Episode 102
Getting coached at the courts can be a tricky proposition. Sometimes the advice you are getting is correct: scoring, 2-bounce rule, and similar usually do not present a problem. But oftentimes the advice is wrong: rush to the NVZ on the 3rd shot, have to wait for the ball to bounce to step into the kitchen (non-volley zone), and forehand in the middle are much-repeated erroneous maxims. What do you do when a fellow player offers unsolicited, even if well-intentioned, advice? In this episode of Pickleball Therapy we have you covered.
In the riff we flip the question around: what do you do when it is you who wants to help a fellow player? There is a "right" way of doing it.

Is "No" Holding You Back? | PLUS Avoid Falling Behind | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball | Episode 101
I was reminded this week about how negativity can affect the way we interpret information that is otherwise aiming to be helpful. It can also affect your mind when you are trying to play your best pickleball. Two things can happen: 1 - you are focusing on the negatives rather than the positives - if instead you change your focus on the positives you will allow them to crowd out the negatives and 2 - your mind ignores the term "no" - just doesn't know what to do with it. This means that when you say "Don't hit the net" your mind hears "Hit the net."
That is the opposite of what you want to feed your brain. In this episode of Pickleball Therapy we address this common limitation we impose on ourselves.
In the riff, we answer a listener question about falling behind in games and give you some specific tips to help you avoid falling ehind, particularly in a tournament or there competitive setting.

UP Your Game with These THREE TIPS | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball | Episode 95
We all want to play to the best of our ability. These 3 tips can help you do that. They will also help you maintain your focus on the court. The third tip is a bit outside the box - let us know what you think.
Pickleball Tip No. 1 - Keep things simple out on the pickleball court. Over complicating your game is increasing the errors in your game. Simplifying things out there will help you win more rallies and, thus, more games.
Pickleball Tip No. 2 - Slow things down out on the pickleball court. You do this by picking one thing to focus on. This allows you to avoid overwhelm out there.
Pickleball Tip No. 3 - Extend the rally. Just extending the rally - no winner required - will get you the "W" in that rally. Remember, your opponents are having a hard time extending the rally on their side. Just make them hit one more pickleball. We share with you one technique here that is unorthodox - give it a try :).

In the riff, we talk about your journey and the agency you have over it. We are focusing this week on a common paddle modification that is being made that may harm your game - or your arm.

Know how to prioritize your game | PLUS avoid ebb frustration | Pickleball Therapy with WeArePickleball| Episode 88
You only have so much time (and focus) to dedicate to your pickleball improvement. Any time spent on non-productive aspects of the game is time not spend on productive aspects of the game. Example: working on the Erne when the punch volley is what you need. Prioritize your work and you will see greater gains.
In the riff, we help you avoid the potential frustration from ebbs and flows in your improvement.
