The deployment of AI-controlled drones that can make autonomous decisions about whether to kill human targets is moving closer to reality, The New York Times reported. Lethal autonomous weapons, that can select targets using AI, are being developed by countries including the US, China, and Israel. The use of the so-called "killer robots" would mark a disturbing development, say critics, handing life and death battlefield decisions to machines with no human input. Two bills proposed by Democrats in Congress this week aim to curb home ownership by big investors in an attempt to improve buying conditions for Americans, the New York Times reported. In the Senate, the End Hedge Fund Control of American Homes Act of 2023 would force big investors to sell off all the single-family homes they own over a period of 10 years, and eventually ban hedge funds from owning any single-family homes entirely. "Yet, in every corner of the country, giant financial corporations are buying up housing and driving up both rents and home prices. The Biden administration announced they waived 26 federal laws in South Texas to allow border wall construction on Wednesday, marking the administration’s first use of sweeping executive power to pave the way for building more border barriers — a tactic used often during the Trump presidency. The Department of Homeland Security posted the announcement on the U.S. Federal Registry with few details outlining the construction in Starr County, Texas, which is part of a busy Border Patrol sector seeing “high illegal entry.” According to government data, about 245,000 illegal entries have been recorded in this region during the current fiscal year. “There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas,” Alejandro Mayorkas, the DHS secretary, stated in the notice. The Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and Endangered Species Act were some of the federal laws waived by DHS to make way for construction that will use funds from a congressional appropriation in 2019 for border wall construction. The waivers avoid time-consuming reviews and lawsuits challenging violation of environmental laws. Iran sent a message to Israel on Saturday stressing that it does not want further escalation in the Hamas-Israel war, but that it will have to intervene if the Israeli operation in Gaza continues, two diplomatic sources with knowledge of the situation told Axios. The fighting between Hamas and Israel will turn into a regional war if Iran gets involved either directly or indirectly, such as through a militant group in Syria or by backing any Hezbollah decision to fully join the fighting. Iran's message, sent to Israel through the UN, comes as the Biden administration has been trying to deter Iran and Lebanon-backed Hezbollah, supported by Iran, from joining the war. U.S. President Joe Biden's chances of re-election are being jeopardized by voters' concerns over his age, the economy and crime, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, creating an opportunity for Republican challenger Donald Trump to return to the White House. The opinion poll found Democrat Biden, 80, tied in a hypothetical November 2024 election against Trump, 77, the former president who is the front-runner for the Republican nomination, with both receiving 39% of the vote and one in five voters undecided. Democrats held a strong advantage among voters most concerned about protecting abortion rights, while Republicans had an edge among those worried about crime, the poll found. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he is launching an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, yielding to mounting pressure from former President Donald Trump and his allies in what’s shaping up as an election-year clash between Congress and the White House. In a statement Tuesday, McCarthy said the House investigations into the Biden family this year have uncovered a “culture of corruption” that demands deeper review. “These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption,” McCarthy said. McCarthy said he will direct the chairmen of the House Judiciary, Oversight and Ways and Means committees to lead the impeachment inquiry. The panels have been working together for months on various probes related to the Biden family and have yet to directly connect the president to any of it. Today, a federal judge has ordered Louisiana officials to stop housing children in the former death row of Louisiana State Penitentiary, known as Angola, and to remove them from the location by Sept. 15. The ruling, which Chief Judge Shelly Dick delivered from the bench, comes after a seven-day hearing in August, in which lawyers for the children and their families put on evidence that the children are routinely held in solitary confinement, deprived of their right to an education, treatment and other rehabilitative services, and have been held in inhumane conditions. Judge Dick found the conditions of confinement at Angola constitute cruel and unusual punishment, and the punitive atmosphere and systemic programming failures violate the 14th Amendment and violate federal law protecting children with disabilities. The City of Houston plans to re-file cases involving dismissed citations against volunteers who have provided food for the homeless population near the downtown library. On Thursday, eight of the cases were dismissed because Houston PD did not show up to court. Randall Kallinen, an attorney who previously helped Food Not Bombs, said the city has an ordinance that prohibits the feeding of more than five people outside unless permission is given by the property owners. Members of the U.S. Congress, the president, vice president and senior executive branch officials and their relatives will be banned from trading stocks under bipartisan legislation introduced on Tuesday. Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said in a brief hallway interview that she and Republican Senator Josh Hawley formally offered the "Ban Stock Trading for Government Officials Act" after unveiling details of the measure earlier this month. It would build on the decade-old Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) law that aims to combat insider trading by members of Congress and their employees. The new bill would not make any exceptions for officials' trading in blind trusts and would impose penalties of varying degrees on members of Congress and executive branch officials. French police should be allowed to spy on citizens remotely through their phones and other devices if suspected of breaking the law. China has been negotiating the creation of a new joint training facility on the Caribbean island nation of Cuba, creating concerns it could lead to the stationing of Chinese troops in the waters off the US, according to the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper on Tuesday reported that discussions between the two countries are in advanced stages, but had not concluded. The report said the officials from President Biden’s Administration have been trying to discourage their Cuban counterparts from finalizing the deal. HOT LABOR SUMMER COCKTAIL

To celebrate Hot Labor Summer — a hashtag popularized by Chris Smalls — our resident anticapitalist bartender Jesse Torres crafted a delicious spicy cocktail by the same name. It’s perfect for on the patio, by the pool, or on the picket line.

60ml Kentucky Bourbon or Cognac (other spirits substitute nicely)

30ml Pineapple juice

15ml Good quality Grenadine

15ml Lime juice

1 dash Aromatic Bitters

Jalapeños (for muddling)

Muddle 2-3 slices of jalapeños in a shaker tin with the bourbon. Add the rest of the ingredients and shake well with ice. Double strain into a rocks glass rimmed with chili lime salt like Tajin, and fill with ice. Garnish with a grilled pineapple spear or jalapeño slice.
