Ep. 29 Fix your Hormones with Integrative Medicine

Ep. 29 Fix your Hormones with Integrative Medicine

Dr. Elena Alawa, osteopathic board-certified physician in internal medicine, functional medicine, and bioidentical hormone therapy shares tips on how to embrace a natural lifestyle, prioritise  gut health, and treat chronic illness in a more holistic way. The idea is not to diss conventional medicine but to integrate holistic and naturopathic medicine. We also discuss the difference in male and female physicians in treating women’s health issues.

Guest Bio:

I suffered with freezing frontal migraines with transitory loss of vision, mood swings rivaling tornados, and panic attacks I have never experienced before. After a neurology evaluation, a brain MRI and many serum tests, I was told that I am probably going through early perimenopause and it’s just ‘normal’ to experience these symptoms, after all, we women are blessed with so many things we are taught to take in stride.

So, I embarked on a personal journey to further my medical training and find out the why’s and the how’s to help my transition. Through the training I received and the skills I acquired, I was able to regain my own self and now, in turn, I am able to help you.

Ep. 26 Becoming a Champion in Advocacy

Ep. 26 Becoming a Champion in Advocacy

Do you have anxiety every time you go to a doctor's appointment because you feel that your symptoms will be dismissed and you won’t be listened to?  That was Erika’s initial experience until she was able to find her voice and advocate for herself confidently. In this episode we discuss her journey to diagnosis and why it was important to her. Erika also shares her top tips on how to become a self advocate. She also gets very vulnerable and expresses how she turned her passion into purpose and wrote her first children’s book, Adalane Plays Many Ways, a book about managing the ups and downs of doing life with someone experiencing chronic pain.  Guest Bio:  Chronic Pain and Writing Adalene After years of ankle injuries, surgeries, appointments, and physical therapy, I've had to accept that chronic pain is a part of my story. Prior to this acceptance, I had done everything right --following the advice of medical practitioners, seeking additional advice and recommendations, completing my exercises at home and gaining strength in physical therapy, and advocating for myself in countless appointments. Several years ago I heard from a couple of different specialists that my ankle is as good as it's going to get. While crushing to accept, it gave me freedom to finally look ahead, instead of trying to get back to the Erika I used to be. Navigating a dynamic disability is filled with ups and downs. It's constant work to accept limitations, invite others into understanding, and take ongoing and active measures to rest. I wrote Adalene Plays Many Ways when I couldn't find a story out there that reflected some of my own experiences, and I wanted to invite my youngest friends (my niece and nephews) into understanding. I invite you to read it, and welcome your feedback. My hope is that this story helps people feel a little more seen. And maybe along the way we'll promote inclusion. Ep. 21: Masking Symptoms & Misdiagnosis - A Narcolepsy and Granulomatosis with Polyangitis Story

The Connection Between Masking Symptoms and Misdiagnosis Many chronic illnesses are misunderstood and not socially accepted. So do you find yourself masking  symptoms of your chronic illness just to fit in? Many in the chronic illness community have done this for years by suffering in silence. This must stop now. So many have gone undiagnosed and misdiagnosed which has led to fatal consequences. In this episode, we talk to a couple who both live with chronic illness and autoimmune disease. After many years of masking symptoms, Amy was eventually diagnosed with narcolepsy, a rare long-term brain condition that can prevent a person from choosing when to wake or sleep. After being misdiagnosed multiple times, Keith Meyers was in a life or death situation that led to the diagnosis of a very rare autoimmune disease called Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) a condition where the blood vessels become inflamed. They share their journey and how their communication, minimalism, and putting into practice the Eisenhower Matrix got them through the toughest years. Guest Bio: Keith and Amy Meyers, the founders of MPower Illness Coaching. “In spite of what we’re all going through, we still have strengths. Ep. 13: How to advocate for a child experiencing more than just growing pains?

Children experiencing physical pain can often be dismissed as just having growing pains. Mayo Clinic describes growing pains as ache or throb in the legs — often in the front of the thighs, the calves or behind the knees. But what should you look out for if you think your child’s pain is more than that?

In this episode, Dr. Saimun Singla explains the steps she takes to help her patients track and understand their pain. She also opens up about her own journey to being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Guest Bio:
Dr. Saimun Singla is board-certified in general pediatrics, pediatric rheumatology, and one of the few pediatric subspecialists in the country who is fellowship-trained in integrative medicine. Her journey is unique because she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis AFTER becoming a rheumatologist. Her pain points as both a patient and doctor led her to found Rheum to Grow, a medical practice for kids with rheumatic diseases that uses an integrative approach to optimize each child's care. She resides in Houston with her husband and three children.

Ep. 11: Finding happiness in spite of chronic illness

Ep. 11: Finding happiness in spite of chronic illness

Many chronic illness warriors say, "I’m fine," but are you happy? Your happiness does matter. In fact, there is a correlation between happiness and how people cope with chronic illness and pain. In a research article by the University of Washington they found that people who found happiness “by having a life with lasting meaning were more likely to report lower levels of pain, pain that didn’t get in the way of their lives, and they experienced less distress (https://agerrtc.washington.edu/index.php?q=node/225).” Living a meaningful life can help you to find joy that surpasses the challenges of your health condition. In this episode, Andi Byers explains her journey to finding her happy despite multiple autoimmune and chronic illnesses, and even a heart attack. She encourages us to stop hiding behind I'm fine and living and doing the things that make us truly happy. When she chose to live a meaningful life doing the things that fulfill her and helping others find joy despite chronic illness while managing inflammation, she found a joy that exceeded her pain. Review of Episode (time stamped): 2:00 – Andi explains how her journey to happiness started with dying. 5:00 – She tells us about the uncomfortable journey of choosing herself and setting boundaries. 10:58 – What happened when she decided to take her power back. 18:00 – Her greatest motivation to finding happiness. 26:19 – The freeing journey from misery to finding happiness. 36:25 – What led her to create the What the Health Expo. 40:51 – How was Finding Your Happy born? Guest Bio: Andi Byers is the founder of Chronic & Iconic Coaching. She is a 21-year Air Force veteran that knows firsthand that the one-size fits all approach is ineffective. Known for her tenacity and success as a Holistic Wellness Practitioner she set off on a mission to change the narrative on how women view health. She facilitates workshops, courses and retreats uplifting women and allowing them to just breathe. After suffering a sudden cardiac arrest in March 2020, she realized that more and more women were bogged down by stress and overwhelm and that she could be a powerful force in preventing other women from experiencing that type of heartbreak. Ep. 06: Stop Medical Gaslighting Me!

Ep. 06: Stop Medical Gaslighting Me!

What is medical gaslighting? It is when a doctor or medical professional minimizes the symptoms and concerns of someone attributing their symptoms to mentally illness.
Oftentimes, the symptoms are in actuality an indication of something much more serious, like heart or autoimmune disease. This can result in delayed treatment, worsening conditions, and even death for some. The traumatizing impact of medical gaslighting often leads to depression and anxiety.
In this episode, Nadine Olia describes her shocking experience with medical gaslighting as her heart symptoms were trivialized by doctor as a mental health problem. Despite being dismissed, Nadine chose to advocate for herself which led to her getting the quality of care and the right treatment for her heart condition. She also details her decision to leave her career as a respiratory therapist to choose her family and become a successful content creator and coach.
Review of Episode (time stamped):

12:37 – The tragic story that motivated her to leave her career as a respiratory therapist to become a stay-at-home mom, content creator, and coach.
18:31 – We discuss how receiving coaching contributed to our success.
21:21 – How she uses her social media platform and the impact she is making on moms.

Ep 03: Thriving with Self-Advocacy- Lupus & Fibromyalgia Awareness Month Special

Welcome to the Lupus and Fibromyalgia Awareness Month Special!

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes disabling fatigue, pain, skin rashes and more when the immune system attacks organs and tissues. This rheumatic disease can lead to heart, lung, and kidney disease, to name a few. 1.5 million Americans, and at least five million people worldwide, have a form of lupus.

Ep 02: Thriving with Mental Health in Spoonie Life- Mental Health Awareness Month Special

Ep 02: Thriving with Mental Health in Spoonie Life- Mental Health Awareness Month Special

Welcome to the Mental Health Awareness Month Special!

The Spoon Theory developed by Christine Miserandino defines how a person living with chronic illness manages their energy. It explains how chronic illness warriors only have a certain amount of energy to extend to activities of daily life illustrated by spoons. You must consider how your chronic illness affects not only your energy, but also how that energy can impact your mental health as well.

The National Institute of Health states that 168 million adults reported depression. The CDC states 1 in 5 people have a mental health condition and 1 in 20 will have a serious mental health condition in the U.S.

Research has shown that depression and fatigue have both been associated with increased activation of the immune system. Inflammation has been shown to cause changes in the brain that result in mental health symptoms. Mental illness has been said to activate inflammation and autoimmune disease. People are often treated with anti-depressants to reduce inflammation.

What can you do as a Spoonie to use and conserve our energy in a way that promotes mental health? Listen to this episode to learn what has helped Mayia and I, and what we recommend based on our experiences.

Review of Episode (time stamped):
2:21 - Mayia Warren shares her mental health journey while living with chronic migraine disease, the second hypermobility spectrum disorder, and oculocutaneous albinism.
7:18 - We discuss the spoon theory and how it relates to mental health.
11:21- Mayia explains how she conserves her energy, prioritizes mental health and her non-negotiables.
21:25- We discuss the impact of toxic positivity and negativity, and how to find balance for mental health as a Spoonie.
22:00 We provide tips based on what has worked for us personally to manage our mental health and improve mindset.

Guest Bio:
Mayia Warren utilizes several platforms with the strategic purpose of creatively advocating. On YouTube, she creates video content centered around bringing awareness to disability, invisible disability and oculocutaneous albinism. She does this through the use of spoken word pieces, shorts, original music, and the video installments of her Better Not Bitter Podcast. As an advocate, she recognizes that it is impossible to know it all, but it's possible to grow through amplifying the voices of those who share different experiences related to disability and chronic health conditions.
