Over the last 3 weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of working with the team at Ikor Labs to host engaging conversations with interesting people from all over the world. Given that we are all currently at home, Ikor had a plan to bring together inspiring folks from their community in what was dubbed as the connected project.
These conversations were recorded via live stream and for me it’s been an amazing opportunity to make new connections with fascinating people, each with their own unique journey and story to tell.
I always leave this discussions feeling motivated and fulfilled. I hope you’ll feel that way too after listening.
Today’s episode is with Thad Beaty and Annie Clements. Husband and wife rockstar duo who met, feel in love and continue to play alongside each other in the award winning group, Sugarland.
This is a wide ranging dialogue about their impeding parenthood, the day to day lives of working musicians and how they are staying creative in the midst of a global pandemic.
I also share with Thad our parallel journey to racing Ironman Arizona in 2012. The similarities are pretty epic. There’s plenty of great lessons and thoughts that come out of this one.
As always, thank you to Jon and the tam at Ikor for the support of the podcast and for the opportunity to host these important conversations. If you like to view the video version of this conversation, you can check it out here. Also as a special thanks, Ikor currently has 25% of all products on their website. Check out

IV 027 | Leah Thorvilson

IV 027 | Leah Thorvilson

Leah Thorvilson was the inaugural winner of the Zwift Academy, designed to offer a weekend warrior the chance to chase their dream as a professional cyclist. The only thing is, Leah had zero ambition to ever race as a cyclist.
Her journey to the Pro-Tour is far from standard, in fact, Leah had never raced before joining the world’s best cyclists in the world's biggest races.
Leah’s first love is running. She spent so much of her life pursuing her goals to race in the Boston Marathon, and beyond. She shares with me her journey from working in a salon to setting school records as a college athlete to standing on the start line of the US Olympic Trials.
Her tale is not all rosy, during what was supposed to be a short break from running, she spent 2 and a half years cramming in all of the partying she possibly could. In a moment of reckoning, she realized that she was squandering her athletic talent. She made a decision to change her life and in the Fall of 2017 started running again, on an unstructured plan. Injuries, heartbreak, and victory followed all the way to the point of entering the highest ranks of cycling.
Part of this story is a cautionary tale, part of it is a heroic journey of someone who just keeps showing up and doing the work.
I am so thankful for the team at iKOR for introducing Leah and I. We crossed paths at a few races in 2019 and I look forward to sharing more conversations and miles with Leah in 2020. On a bike or on two-feet.
I am happy to have had this conversation with Leah and I hope you enjoy.

IV 026 | Farid Noori

IV 026 | Farid Noori

Farid Noori's story is incredible. At 2 years old the Taliban came to his idyllic village in mountainous Afghanistan.  His family was forced to escape to Pakistan to flee the war raging in his homeland.

He describes the darkness that still exists after decades of conflict. He also describes a motivated and engaged youth who are proud of their country and have a desire to do better.

Truth be told, my background and experiences growing up in Australia and living for the last decade in North America are far removed from what Farid describes.  That is what is so amazing about this conversation, for me it was a chance to walk a mile in the shoes of someone whose upbringing was completely different from mine, yet we find common ground. Firstly as humans and secondly through a mutual love for sport and in particular endurance sports.

His family and society had a vision for his life. When given the opportunity to travel to the US on a 'golden ticket' visa, the expectation would be that he would return to Afghanistan to lead the country by working in government or the UN to help solve the generational issues facing his compatriots.

He shares with you and I - memories that have altered the course of his life and his immediate future. Including, of course, his first interactions with sport and, especially mountain biking. He was first introduced to the sport of Enduro racing in New Mexico and his addiction and fascination for cycling grew from there. He now sees it as his moral obligation to become Afghanistan’s first Olympic Cyclist.

This is a truly fascinating conversation that I’m privileged to bring to you. I felt like I could talk with Farid forever and this conversation really stuck with me.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Love, Trav

IV 025 | Louise Burke

IV 025 | Louise Burke

Our brain holds more power than we know.

The science and research in sports nutrition has almost entirely focused on what the muscles need, and that's all changing thanks to industry leader and my guest, Louise Burke.

"We forget that we are whole human beings, and we've got a head on top of our muscles and that often directs the traffic in terms of our (sports) performance." - Louise Burke

When Louise speaks, people listen. And that was the case when I spent a morning with her in New York, following her participation in the New York Marathon. As a fellow Aussie, I was excited to meet her.  Having grown up in Australia, where Burke's books on sports nutrition grace bookshelves across the country. My parents use recipes from those books to this day, almost 20 years on.

Aside from generational recipe creation, Burke's legacy is guaranteed via her three decades of work with the Australian Institute of Sport, working directly with the world's best athletes and coaches. Her research and knowledge focused on carbohydrate fueling, and utilization is game-changing and has resulted in multiple Olympic medals. In fact, any athlete with goals to increase their performance can benefit from Burke's findings.

To understand where the opportunity lies, we must look back at where we've come. For most of us, we have the personal observation and recognition that if we're feeling a bit tired and flat during a race or a training session, we consume carbohydrates and feel immediately better. We don't have to wait until it's absorbed and taken to the muscle to use it as a fuel source. It's instantaneous.

This is one of the many concepts we discuss when it comes to fueling and carbohydrate use in sports. We also discuss where the future of nutrition lies in elite sport. This conversation is a fascinating look into the life of one of the world's greatest scientist, who has been able to develop her career in putting science into practice.

Thanks to Julia from Unit Nutrition for bringing Louise and me together. Because of this introduction we spent time touching on the innovative practice of mouth-rinsing carbohydrates.  As Burke mentioned, "there seems to be something about the act of putting carbohydrates in your mouth that makes your body feel good." And the research proves it. "When we use brain imaging techniques, we can see that putting carbohydrates in your mouth interacts with receptors on your tongue, in your mouth, and your gastrointestinal tract, and it lights up parts of the brain that operate in the area of reward and wellbeing."

While there's an immediate impact, Burke goes on to state, "It all makes sense that once you put some carbs in your mouth, they'll have contact with those receptors, if you swallow it immediately you're not going to get a lot of contact. But if you can keep it in your mouth for five to 10 seconds, then all those areas of the brain light up, and suddenly you start feeling good again."

But what about the future? It turns out; there are quite a few ingredients in food that also impact our brain function. Burke and other leading scientists are researching these effects, with the upcoming 2020 Olympics clearly in their sights. Each Olympics represents a new high-watermark in human achievement. So what's next? Specifically, in a high-temperature setting and environment like Tokyo, cooling strategies are top of mind. Burke said, n"menthol allows us to feel cooler, which could be useful for a hot environment like Tokyo." The research doesn't stop there, Burke states, "there's the bitter sensation that's used with Quinine that gives you a fight or flight experience, a sudden shock where you may find another gear that you didn't have."

IV 024 | Colin O'Brady

IV 024 | Colin O'Brady

Colin O'Brady is the world's greatest Endurance Athlete.  There I said it! Hear me out...

When was the last time someone did something for the very first time, yes Eliud Kipchoge broke an unbreakable record in going sub 2, but with all due respect to that amazing achievement. Colin spent 54 days in the harshest environment on Earth to be the first person to cross Antarctica solo, unaided and unsupported.  This achievement itself would be impressive, if it wasn't for the additional world records Colin holds. All in all, his belief is that no Human is Limited. It's hard not to be inspired by Colin and I am privileged to share this incredible conversation from earlier this Summer.

If you’re subscribed to the INNERVOICE emails and read our features you’ll have seen that things have been a little quiet of late. That’s mostly due to the work I’ve been doing with the team from 29029, if you haven’t heard of 29029 before, Colin gives a great description of the event and the community that surronds the weekend experience. Basically you have 36 hours to hike a private mountain as many times as you can until you reach 29,029 feet, representing the vertical gain of Mt Everest.

I’ve been lucky to attend the 2 events in 2019, and have shared the stories of the incredible humans who participate in this challenge. Many of them pushing themselves further than they ever thought possible. In the spirit of INNERVOICE, which as you know is a platform to acknowledge the incredible feats of athletes and the mindset it takes for them to get to the top. 29029 provides that opportunity in spades.

One of the co-founders of 29029 and friend Marc Hodulich, introduced Colin and I. Today you’ll hear his incredible story. I am stoked to bring it to you, I have no doubt you’ll learn something new and interesting about him and yourself. He gives us all permission to dream bigger, and start, simply by taking one step at a time.

I have no doubt, given everything that he has achieved, that Colin is indeed the World’s Greatest Endurance athlete.

As you heard, Colin has a book coming out very soon, titled ‘The Impossible First’ - you can pre-order a copy now. Also, if you’d like to join the 29029 community and participate in a 2020, registration goes live today at 11am, (October 29, 2019) or if you’re listening in the future, you may have already missed out. Either way head to 29029everesting.com and while you’re there hit the stories tab to check out some amazing stories from a ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

IV 023 | David McNamee

IV 023 | David McNamee

This week's show is with champion Triathlete and Kona contender David McNamee. Even the most engaged follower of the sport may not recognize David's name.  And he's okay with that.

We dig into David's singular focus on the world championship and how he builds his life and relationships around the one-day in October on the Big Island.

He discusses the mindset he uses throughout the year and his most significant moments. A mindset that allows him to perform at the highest level. More importantly, David shares how he stays happy and fulfilled in his life.  After all, as he mentions, we only have one life!  We may as well enjoy it.

-------

This episode is presented by Unit Nutrition - the World's first commercially available carbohydrate mouth-rinse product.  Here's what David said about using Unit's rinse during his intense workouts leading into this years Ironman World Championships.

"I will never fail the rep after I have a mouth-rinse. I just won't fail. I have a belief in myself and the product. When I'm right on the edge, it takes 10 seconds, I rinse with Unit Rinse, and I feel a little bit sharper. Most of the time, in training, especially intense training, you mentally give up before your body does. You can always physically do more when things get tough; your mentality can switch, and you start to tell yourself that you're tired or that it hurts too much.

Unit rinse gives me a mental stimulation and a belief that I can actually keep going. It's a little reward and helps me look forward to hard-intense workouts. That's how I build confidence in my ability to perform. When I complete tough workouts week after week, the ones I'm not sure I'm going to get through, I walk away knowing you can push through when those doubts appear. We all remember those sessions when you're halfway through, and you wonder how you're possibly going to get to the end.

Carbohydrate mouth-rinsing is not a new concept, there are decades of research that show the benefits. For me, the fact that Unit Rinse is a product designed specifically for this purpose is significant; you rarely find a product that is backed by science and proven in the field."

Now for a limited time you can try Unit Nutrition's carbohydrate rinse product for yourself.  Head to UnitNutrition.com and use the code INNERVOICE at checkout.

IV 020 | Daniel Cassidy

IV 020 | Daniel Cassidy

Today’s episode is a great conversation I had recently with Daniel Cassidy the CEO of Major League Triathlon, the first and only Professional Triathlon league in the North America.

Dan and I have become close friends over the last few years as I’ve followed the league from its inception in 2016. We cover a wide range of topics today, including

- How Dan’s wife Sarah played an integral role in the creation of MLT through her experience as a Triathlon spectator

- The origin story of Major League Triathlon which started as a way to engage spectators and the general public

- The courage to go all-in and try something new

- Having heroes in professional sports as a young athlete and providing a clear pathway for youth, junior and collegiate athletes aspiring to race at the top of the sport

- My obscure Triathlon hero as a kid!

- The skills and lessons, Dan has taken from sport into business and controlling the things you can control

- Ideas on how to grow engagement and participation in Triathlon

-Gender parity and equality in the Mixed Team Relay format.

- The inauspicious beginnings of the series in Temple, Texas and some of the memorable moments from the first 3 seasons of Major League Triathlon.

Finally, it saddens me to share the news of the passing of Mike Plant, Mike was a legend in the sport of triathlon, many consider him the first person to cover the beginnings of the sport in San Diego, CA some 40 years ago. He was a lifelong contributor to the industry, a friend and supporter of Major League Triathlon and a beacon for positivity. Mike you will be missed, mate.

IV 019 | Coaching Call 003

Welcome to ‘The Coaching Call’ with Trav and Jasper. This an unedited, unfiltered look at my personal journey back to sport. As you’ll hear over the next 4 months, I have some big goals in the gravel cycling world and I want to share that journey with you.

On today’e episode we cover

  • Travel and training for a busy athlete
  • Recovery, tools, tips and the basics
  • Nutrition, why there is no silver bullet
  • Why do we sometimes feel better after a hard effort
  • I recap my race from the Rasputista Gravel Race including the gory details of the mud, snow and epic conditions
  • Learning from trying and finding joy in the challenge

You’ll notice in my voice that I am tired, last week was my biggest week of training in a number of years, so it’s too be expected. The important part to note that this is real, not every week is going to perfect, the fatigue, lack of motivation is something I’m sure anyone training for a big goal will experience.

IV 018 | Ken Rideout

IV 018 | Ken Rideout

Today’s episode is an amazing conversation I had with Ken Rideout while he was in town for the Boston Marathon. For those of you who know Ken will understand what I mean when I say, he might possibly be the most interesting man in the world.

As you’ll hear Ken set an ambitious goal to run a sub-2:30 marathon in Boston, and to win the Masters category. While he missed this goal by a couple of minutes, as always he left it all on the course as you’d expect.

He shares some intimate details about his life growing up in inner-city Boston, the journey he took into endurance sports and the challenges him and his wife had with fertility; Ken now has 4 kids and is in the process of adopting a 5th child.

This really was one of the most interesting conversations I’ve ever had, some of the one-liners are incredible and the rest you’ll have to hear for yourself.

If you’d like to read more about Ken’s journey head to InnerVoice and check it out.

Welcome to ‘The Coaching Call’ with Trav and Jasper. This an unedited, unfiltered look at my personal journey back to sport. As you’ll hear over the next 4 months, I have some big goals in the gravel cycling world and I want to share that journey with you.

On today’s episode we cover

  • Quantifying your seemingly unquantifiable goals
  • Data overload - the good, the bad and the ugly
  • The week that was and the traffic light screen in my Training Peaks account
  • The importance of testing
  • We also talk about the little things that make a difference and I give a very unscientific description of The Hawthorne Effect.

We also answer questions from the audience and talk about why consistency and patience are at the crux of my build up and I’m guessing a lot of your journeys too.

IV 015 | Mark Satkiewicz

IV 015 | Mark Satkiewicz

Today’s episode is a conversation I had with Mark Satkiewicz, the co-founder of SBT GRVL an exciting new cycling event planned for this Summer in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Mark is an avid endurance athlete and is the former CEO of Smartwool.

As you’ll hear during our call 1 year ago to the day, Mark experienced the most impactful moment of his life. During an easy recovery ride close to his former home in LA, Mark suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.

Given a small chance of recovery and an uncertain long term prognosis, Mark’s world was turned upside down, he acknowledges the mental impact it had on him and is also grateful that his survival has helped him recalibrate what’s important in his life. Mark is an inspiring figure to many, myself included and gives some amazing insight into his career as a C-level executive as well as the details of what is certain to set the SBT GRVL event apart, even as a first year event.

We talk about what could be a marketing case study in the way SBT GRVL enrolled influential athletes to help spread the word about the race, including InnerVoice alumni Ted and Laura King and Amity Rockwell

Once again thanks to the team at iKOR labs , not only do they sponsor the InnerVoice Audio experience, they also are the official CBD partner of the SBT GRVL event.

IV 013 | Robert MacDonald

IV 013 | Robert MacDonald

Robert MacDonald's life changed in an instant, during a trip to Mexico, he fell 31 feet from his hotel balcony, landed on his back and had two immediate thoughts. "What have I done", and "I can't feel my legs"...

What followed was a journey of resilience and an attitude of "I will" that has motivated a community of incredible people to make a positive impact on the world around them.

Following Robert's accident, with nine broken vertebrae, a dislocated spine, 11 broken ribs, a fractured scapula, a punctured lung, a lacerated kidney, and no sensation below his waist, doctors gave Robert MacDonald a 5% chance of ever walking again. Two years later, he completed a half marathon and three years later he completed his first full marathon.

Team "I Will" started with one man, a tragedy and is now one of Toronto’s fastest growing charities. The Toronto Rahab Foundation helped give MacDonald a second chance and three years later, he set out to complete a marathon and give back. Soon a dynamic community had rallied around his mantra and hundreds would challenge themselves to do the same, joining MacDonald in crossing the finish line at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2015.

IV 012 | Jake Montgomery

IV 012 | Jake Montgomery

Today’e episode is a Skype call I recently had with Australian professional Triathlete Jake Montgomery. Jake’s story is one that I am passionate about sharing. Prior to the 2016 70.3 Worlds Championships in Moolooloba on Australia’s Sunshine Coast, Jake was primed to have his breakout race, signaling his arrival on the world stage. Unfortunately he never made it to the startline and the course of his career and life was changed in an instant.

A car turned in front of him and Jake collided with the car at 40km, causing traumatic brain bleeds and a chance that he would never race again. What followed was a mental battle to make it back to the sport he loves. His journey has been rocky and thanks to finding love by chance, his renewed passion has him gunning for an appearance at this year’s 70.3 Worlds in Nice. In Jake’s own words, he has unfinished business.

InnerVoice was created to tell stories like Jake's, so I hope you enjoy his very human, very inspiring tale.

I am extremely grateful that I get to meet and talk to the incredible people who make up the endurance sports industry, be it athletes, brands or you, the InnerVoice community.
