Women's Health Equity Conversation with the CEO of Center for Black Women's Wellness

Women's Health Equity Conversation with the CEO of Center for Black Women's Wellness

Despite spending more money per capita on maternal-child health efforts than any country worldwide, the United States (US) is the only high-resource nation with a steadily increasing mortality rate; and notable disparities by race and ethnicity.

The brunt of this burden is bore by Black and Indigenous women—where the risk is 2-3 times higher than their non-Hispanic white counterparts to die from complications of pregnancy and birth. In 2020 alone, the US maternal mortality rate was 23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births, with 861 deaths attributable to maternal causes such as hemorrhage and cardiovascular conditions.

These statistics paint a grim picture of not only the increased risk faced by persons of color but the condition of our health system. The time to implement equitable solutions is now. Black mothers can’t wait.

We had the honor of discussing these disturbing realities with Jemea Dorsey, the CEO of Center for Black Women's Wellness - nonprofit supporting communities in Atlanta, Georgia.

Women's Health: Preeclampsia, Infertility and Fibroids

Women's Health: Preeclampsia, Infertility and Fibroids

Every woman deserves high-quality, affordable care. However, every year 500,000 women between ages 15 to 49 die from pregnancy-related complications. Worse still, two-thirds of these deaths are preventable. According to the CDC, pregnancy-related death occurs 3.3 times more often for African American women than white women. Studies have shown that a significant driver of this crisis is implicit bias. Racial disparity in healthcare costs us money, unnecessary suffering, and ultimately, lives lost. Far too often, women’s early symptoms and warning signs are dismissed, leading to unnecessary, costly, and potentially deadly complications that should have been easily preventable. These problems are wide-ranging, affecting far too many patients and costing us money and precious lives. Untreated chronic conditions drastically increase the risks of pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, premature birth, and even death. As just one example among many, unmanaged diabetes increases the risk for premature birth, congenital disabilities, and even pregnancy loss. It’s the same story for nearly every untreated chronic condition, whether it is diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, or even just premature birth. The costs associated add up quickly. According to a study published by HHS, in 2009 the average medical expenses for a full-term baby’s first-year amount to only $3,325. That figure balloons up to a whopping $190,467 if the baby’s born preterm, before 28 weeks. These costs continue to rise throughout the baby’s early life. Again, just the annual societal, economic burden of pre-term delivery alone was estimated in 2005 to be a whopping 26 billion dollars. And that was back in 2005. Even that is only the monetary cost. The human cost is immeasurable.

The suicide rate among physicians tops that of combat veterans. About 300 to 400 US physicians take their own lives every year, a rate that is higher than that of the general public "by 40% for men and an astonishing 130% for women," The price tag for physician burnout runs at $4.6 billion annually when the costs associated with turnover and reduced clinical hours are tallied. Burnout is widely recognized as an urgent issue for the medical profession, with about 54% of physicians reporting one or more symptoms in previous studies. The condition is marked by emotional exhaustion, feelings of cynicism and detachment from work, and a sense of low personal accomplishment.

Looking at the costs for healthcare organizations, they found an annual cost attributable to burnout estimated at roughly $7,600 per physician. The analysis does not fully factor in potential costs to a practice or hospital, as it captures only direct revenue losses as a result of a physician vacancy. Indirect costs may include a loss of patients to other practices when a physician leaves."In addition, as patient satisfaction diminishes with reduced quality of care from physician burnout, the organization may enjoy less favorable contracting with payers or see reduced annual reimbursements drop because of low patient satisfaction scores,".The several factors in estimating the cost of replacing physicians, including search costs, hiring costs, and physician startup expenses, or what are termed friction costs by economists.

His unwavering dedication to healing care that empowers patients with thoughtful patient information, compassionate care and deep listening makes Dr. Nelson Alawode, MD, MBA a top physician in DC, MD, and VA area. We explore how he used telehealth to administered pregnancy care and the birth of a child. Dr. Alawode is a board-certified OB/GYN physician and Johns Hopkins MBA graduates. Dr. Nelson Aderemi Alawode was born, in Oyo State, Nigeria. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Portland where he received a B.S. degree in Pre-Medicine in 1976. An Alumni of Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine 1981, Dr. Alawode also attended the University of Maryland Hospital to complete his Residency program in OB/GYN. Dr. Alawode has been practicing Ob/Gyn since 1987. Dr. Alawode is very passionate about Women’s Health, hence his interest in Integrated Healthcare system---“One Stop Shop” in Developing Countries. Dr. Alawode completed his MBA program in Healthcare Management at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Dr. Alawode’s life-changing experience started after delivering an 11 ½-year-old girl by cesarean section while he was rotating through the department of OB/GYN as a medical student at Wake Forest. That experience was so profound, he was divinely inspired to do something about it, on that day, the thought for “Abstinence Teen Choice” had its inception. He has committed part of his practice to teaching and sharing information with teenagers about the implications of multiple sexual partners; that sex was and still is, created by God and it is good and appropriate in the context of marriage. A husband and father of 3 daughters. Dr. Alawode feels an innate responsibility to teach our youth, who now live in a world where the influence from television, sexual AD campaigns and peer pressure, create a very difficult and dangerous sexual teaching for the youth of this millennium. With the creation of Abstinence Teen Choice, a 501 C 3, he teaches teens to understand the psychological implications of having multiple sexual partners so they realize that multiple STD can be transmitted from engaging in sex with one or multiple partners outside a committed relationship. This for him is marriage.

The path to a potential handshake with the commissioner on draft night begins the first time a player straps on pads and a helmet. But with more than 1 million high school players and only about 300 NFL openings each year, the odds are astronomical that a player will make it from high school to the highest levels of the sport.   The league and its programs are about more than producing on-field talent —they’re about developing people with the character and leadership skills to succeed, in football or elsewhere. Andre and I talked about his NFL career, post-career work with Beyond The Game Network, and the foundational values of teamwork, commitment, and leadership. And how football can be a catalyst for greater personal development at every level of play. Andre graduated from Florida State University and completed an eight-year NFL career with the Detroit Lions.

After graduating from Florida State University and completing an eight-year NFL career with the Detroit Lions, Andre saw an issue that most NFL players go through, but is not really talked about too often; pro athletes are on a team for their entire lives, but after the game is over with, there is no team.  There is no head coach.  After sports, an athlete is expected to win at business with the same success as they had on the field.  But, nobody talks about that an athlete has been a professional at football for 15+ years, and then have to compete with a business executive that has 25+ years of business experience. The odds of success for that are the same odds of a business executive trying to play in the NFL, they are very low!

Instead of trying to compete, Andre saw the best thing to do was collaborate.  He found some of the smartest business executives around and asked if they were willing to help him create a "post-career team" that combines the influence of athletes and the experience of businessmen/women.  This is where Beyond the Game was born.  BTG is a network of athletes and business execs that come together to educate, invest, and empower each other.  The awesome thing about our group is that the athletes do not invest their money, nor are there any fees for any athlete.  EVER!  Our network works like this: Business execs invest in highly vetted startups as a group. We only invest in startups that offer some type of brand ambassador compensation (cash or equity) to our athletes.  So everyone wins!  This is the beauty of Beyond the Game.

Andre believes that giving back is an important component to his ongoing success. He hosts a yearly no-cost youth football and cheering camp in his hometown of Cartersville, Georgia, and also, he frequently participates in speaking engagements for many charitable organizations. He, his wife, and two daughters live in Georgia.

Ken Rochon, Founder, and Andrea Adams-Miller, Executive Director of the Keep Smiling Movement, Inc., are on a mission to create and capture smiles all over the world. Ken Rochon, Social Proof Celebrity Event Photographer, President of The Umbrella Syndicate alongside Adams-Miller, CEO of The RED Carpet Connection, International Publicist, have captured the smiles of hundreds of CEOs, entrepreneurs, celebrities, athletes, models, influencers, veterans, first responders, and more holding the blue “Keep Smiling” cards!

These photographed honorees are an example of the type of people who stand for love and acceptance by creating SMILES. Barry Shore, pictured in the banner above, the originator of the “Keep Smiling" cards, used a smile to change his mindset and physical abilities after 8 years of quadriplegia due to symptoms of Guillain- Barre Syndrome. Now, as the "ambassador of Joy," he spreads love, acceptance, and joy like a positive viral contagion.

We sat down with Ken Rochon to discuss his journey while keeping in mind that 72% of entrepreneurs are affected by mental health conditions as they chase their dreams. Ken is the author of 22 published books, speaker, and radio host. A baby boomer entrepreneur and the guardian angel of the Keep Smiling campaign, he opens up about his mental health on his journey to stardom.
