Episode 32 - Southern Utah Adventure
Welcome to episode 32 of Inside The Line the Catskills! On this episode, John and I go over my recent adventure in southern Utah. This was such a fascinating, beautiful place that I cannot explain, but I will definitely try on this episode. I go over what my wife and I did everyday and try to explain what the areas looked like, but it's tough to describe some of these places because of how stunning they were. We also do a quick talk about bushwhacking tips, the new Catskills Trail Crew (a group of volunteers that make improvements on the trails in the Catskills) and of course mountain lions! Episode 31 - Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail with Vicki Ryan
Welcome to episode 31 of Inside The Line: The Catskills! Tonight, my friend from high school, Vicki Ryan, joins me on the show and talks about her experience hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. This long trail, also known as the PCT, is a 2,653 mile trail that stretches from the Mexican boarder all the way up to the Canadian Boarder. With over 490,000 feet of elevation gain, it is still considered one of the most scenic long hiking trails in the worlds. We talk about her good times, her difficult times and many other topics as well. Tonight's Catskills history is about a time when the deer were almost wiped out of the area. Thanks for listening! Episode 27 - Tipsy Bushwhacking Stories with John B.
Welcome to episode 27 of Inside The Lines: The Catskills! Tonight, my good friend John and I tell some of our great stories of the crazy bushwhacks we have done together. Most of these bushwhacks involved John hating his life during the hike, but in the end, it made for a memorable experience. We talk about a hike up Balsam Cap from the south, a skirt around the steep eastern side of Slide Mountain, an adventure on North Dome and a nettelicious hike down Rusk Mountain. We also talk about hiking with great Catskills legends like Ralph Ryndak and Joe Ferri. Episode 26 - Bearpen Mountain Part 2 with Russ L
Welcome to episode 26 of Inside The Line: The Catskills! This is part two of the story about Bearpen Mountain. Bearpen Mountain, in the 1950's, once hosted a ski center called the Princeton Ski Bowl. This ski center was on its way to being one of the best ski centers on the east coast. On this episode, Russ L and I discuss the different features of the ski center and also, how it came to it's demise. Unfortunately, the Princeton Ski Bowl had to shut down due to the wrong reasons and possible illegal reasons and we go in depth about. Thanks for listening! Subscribe on any platform! Share! Donate! Episode 26 - Bearpen Mountain Part 1 with Russ L.
Welcome to episode 26 of Inside The Lines: The Catskills! On this episode, I am joined by Russ L and we talk about a former ski center that was on its way to being the best ski center in the north east: Bearpen Mountain. Bearpen Mountain once held a ski center called the Princeton Ski Bowl, which was built and running in the late 1950's. Bearpen, due to its unique shape, attracted more snow than other Catskill peaks and most other mountains in the north east. It was perfect for skiing. In this episode, we talk about the start of the Princeton Ski Bowl and why it was chosen by the owner, Dr. Ben Lane. This is a great intro to the amazing story that Russ tells on his webpage and it was so long, that I had to cut it into two parts! Russ has done a massive amount of research on Bearpen and other "lost ski resorts" throughout New York state. Check out his links below! Thanks for listening! Subscribe on any platform! Share! Episode 24 - 14 Day Solo Trek with Harold Oakhill
Welcome to episode 24 of Inside The Line: The Catskills! In 1918, T. Morris Longstreth wrote a book about his solo hike through the Catskills. 103 years later, fellow SAR team member Harold Oakhill, who was inspired by Longstreth's adventure, decided to take a very similar route and spend 14 days in the Catskills. On this episode, he shares highlights of his experiences, what challenges he faced hiking solo and some of the major changes in townships and trails as compared to Longstreth's journey in 1918. Harold also tells a story about a possible ghost encounter near Echo Lake. I also do a short lesson about the Grand Hotel, which was a massive hotel located in Pine Hill. Thanks for listening! Episode 23 - Vacation Valley with Chris Van Kleeck
Welcome to episode 23 of Inside The Line: The Catskills! Most of time when you are driving throughout the Catskills, you can't help but wonder what once existed in some places. On this episode, I am joined with WInnisook historian Chris Van Kleeck and we take a deep dive into a place once called Vacation Valley. Vacation Valley was located in the Big Indian/Oliverea area below Slide and Panther Mountain and was a destination for people to escape the city life for vacation in the early 1900's throughout the 1960's. Chris shares his knowledge of the area and also how he dug up so much information about this once thriving place. The movie he made is located on Youtube. Check it out! Thanks for listening! Welcome to episode 22 of Inside The Lines: The Catskills! Tonight I have a special chat with Lourdes Sonera, who is the Catskill Club 3500 trail maintenance and board member. We discuss stewardship in the Catskills and how big of a role the 3500 club has with the not only the high peaks, but other local places as well. In 2021, the DEC launched it's first ever adopt-a-trailhead program and the 3500 club (with Lourdes expertise) were the first to sign up! Episode 20 - Carl, Phil and Bill from RevSpirits
Welcome to episode 20 of Inside The Line: The Catskills! On this episode, I have a great chat with Carl, Bill and Phil from RevSpirits. Located in the northern Catskills in a small town named Jefferson, these friends got together one day and decided to put their bees and their honey to good use. While much of the honey in retail stores is processed, RevSpirits honey is harvested locally and left raw, so all of its natural goodness stays in tact. After that, it is distilled and is made into a alcohol called a spirit (strong distilled liquor such as brandy, whiskey, gin, or rum.) We talk about how they started, what their process is and what future plans they have for their business. Prior to this interview, I had no knowledge on how any distilling or brewing is done, so this was a great learning experience for me! I also have have a brief history about the great Overlook Hotel and famous visitor. Thanks for listening! Subscribe on any platform! Share! Donate! Do whatever you want! Episode 18 - Panther Mountain Meteorite with Chuck O'Dale
Welcome to episode 18 of Inside The Line: The Catskills! On this episode we talk about Panther Mountain. Panther Mountain is well known for having the very popular Giant Ledge right next to it and it's a good first climb to introduce someone to the Catskills and pursue their 3500 club patch. What most don't know is that Panther Mountain is (in theory so far) the site of a former meteorite crash! I am joined by crater explorer Chuck O'Dale, who has explored and examined numerous areas of impact crater sites all over North America. He brings with him some amazing knowledge and evidence that Panther Mountain could indeed be the site of a meteorite crash from millions of years ago. Thanks for listening! Subscribe on any platform! Episode 15 - Dealing With Danger on Blackhead with Captain Nelson and Lt Breigal
Welcome to episode 15 of Inside The Line: The Catskills! Back in 2010, two men got stranded on Blackhead Mountain during a big Nor'easter snowstorm. The storm dumped over three feet of snow and conditions during the storm were described as horrific. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts and survival attempts, one of the hikers did not make it. Tonight, I have New York State Forest Rangers Captain Nelson and Lt Breigal here to talk about that incident. We discuss what challenges they faced, how difficult the mission was and what the hikers could have done to save themselves. Due to the weather, this was one of the most difficult rescues ever in the Catskills. Big thank you to Jeff W. for putting this interview together and thank you to the rangers and volunteers for their heroic efforts on those crazy days during the rescue.
