#41 Healing through Acceptance and Self Care with Alan Kavanagh

#41 Healing through Acceptance and Self Care with Alan Kavanagh

For this episode, we have Alan Kavanagh from Dublin, Ireland. Alan speaks on Acceptance as a way of truly living.

As a hardworking, compassionate, ambitious, motivated and flexible individual, Alan has gained knowledge, skills and competencies in a range of areas related to the counselling profession. He possess a strong ability to connect and engage with clients in both one-to-one and group settings, remaining empathetic and non-judgmental. He have an excellent understanding of social issues affecting those struggling with mental health and substance misuse issues, as well as a solid grasp of community development principles. Although addiction can take many forms, not only that of a substance nature. Alan strongly believe in the social determinants model of health & how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to the development of issues throughout our lifespan. He believes too often we can individualise the issue thus label the person as the cause & do not factor in:

‘The social conditions in which people live powerfully influence their chances to be healthy. Indeed factors such as poverty, food insecurity, social exclusion and discrimination, poor housing, unhealthy early childhood conditions and low occupational status are important determinants of most diseases, deaths and health inequalities between and within countries’ (World Health Organization [WHO] 2004)

Alan is a passionate & committed life long learner who feels sometimes there can be a strong pressure for people to prove their worth, and that sometimes value can be placed too heavily on pieces of paper & should never outweigh the value within a person to be present. While education is no doubt empowering there is value in all forms not just the ones that are certified; especially, that one we call Life.

Alan shares the most vital thing he has learned, is that without practicing Self-care we will harm rather than help the person that needs to be heard. We got into this work because we care so we need to protect our best intervention to support at all costs, which quite simply is our authentic & empathic ‘Self’; otherwise, we will pay a heavy price.

One of Alan's favourite quotes is "No matter what it's done for your mind your education has been a failure, if it's failed to open your Heart" St.Francis de sale

#48 A faith led fight against exploitation of migrant workers with Moe Turaga

Moe is a modern slavery survivor advocate from Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. Moe was trafficked from Fiji as a young man to work in the Australian horticulture sector. He told his story for the first time in public at the Bali Process Government and Business Forum in August 2017 in front of government and business leaders from 50 Asia Pacific nations. Since then he’s told his story many times, including to members of Parliament and the Committee of Inquiry into establishing a Modern Slavery Act for Australia. The Report from that Inquiry titled Hidden in Plain Sight reproduced Moe’s testimony in full. Moe has been a witness and provided evidence at Government wage theft inquiries, relaying testimonies of farmworker exploitation. The advocacy work that Moe has undertaken has been effective in raising awareness that slavery-like conditions exist in Australia today and of the importance of bringing an end to modern slavery.

#6 Spanish Edition - Mariam Mendoza: Nunca te rindas, sigue aunque sientas que ya no puedas, pero nunca te rindas.

"Never give up. Go over, go under, go around, or go through. But never give up.”- Uknown.

Marian Mendoza was born and raised in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela. She graduated from Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez High School to pursue Industrial Relations in the College of Business at Dr. Rafael Belloso Chacin University. However, due to political and socio-economic issues in Venezuela, she had to drop out and move with her parents to Tennessee.

After working in sales for an auto insurance company, she desired to pursue her bachelor’s degree, but since she could not find a school that offered the program, she decided to study psychology at Middle Tennessee State University. In the meantime, she worked in small jobs to support her three children as a single mother. She was also involved in different organizations on campus, such as La Comunidad, “Latinx organization,” where she was voted Vice-President.  She also became a Phi Sigma Pi Honor Society member, The Gamma Beta Phi Society, and Psi Chi - The International Honor Society in Psychology and the Pinnacle Honor Society. At the same time, collaborating with the LGBT+ events and Habitat for Humanity, among other organizations on campus, work together to better the community.

After successfully obtaining a bachelor’s degree with a double minor in Mental Health Services, Spanish, and Pre- Occupational Therapy, she took a break to dedicate to her children, mostly her youngest, born with disabilities and needed more attention during that time.

She is currently working in sales from home, and she is enrolled at the Baptist Health Sciences University to pursue her career in Neurodiagnostic Technology.
