About Nathan Bruemmer (he/him/his)

Nathan Bruemmer is the former Executive Director of ALSO Youth in Sarasota, FL — a community center focusing on outreach, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ youth. He is a recent graduate of Stetson University College of Law where he was a member of Stetson Law’s Trial Team, Dispute Resolution Board, and Journal of Advocacy and the Law. Nathan is a Florida native, a graduate of the University of South Florida and a former teacher in Hillsborough County. He has worked as a consultant, educator and advocate on behalf of LGBTQ+ youth, the transgender community, and those impacted by food and housing insecurity.

Nathan was named one of the Tampa Bay Area’s “Most Remarkable People” in 2018 by Watermark Media. The Tampa Bay Business Journal presented him with the Business of Pride “Outstanding Voice Award” for his advocacy work on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community in 2017.

Nathan currently serves as the President and acting Executive Director of St Pete Pride. He also serves on the Sarasota County Bar Association’s Council of Diversity and Inclusion, the TransAction Florida Advisory Council, and the Board of Directors for the Rainbow Housing Coalition.

Kenita Placide (they/them)

Kenita Placide is a nonbinary native of the island/country of Saint Lucia. They are the Founder and Executive Director of the Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality(ECADE). They are social justice and human rights advocates with a specific focus on Health and HIV, women’s rights, LGBT rights, youth, and climate change. They have advocated HIV and human rights, including women, youth, and LGBTI issues, for over 16 years and have worn many hats to bring attention and funding to the smaller islands in the eastern part of the Caribbean. ECADE is an independent umbrella organization, including organizations operating in the small islands in the eastern Caribbean from the Virgin Islands down to Grenada. They are the founder and organizer of the only Caribbean Women and Sexual Diversity Conference from 2013 to the present.

About Our Series Host

Richard Brethour-Bell (he/him)

Richard Brethour-Bell (Vice President, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion | Co-Chair, Human Rights Committee | Coordinator, Racism & Oppression Awareness Program at InterPride) was raised in South Central Los Angeles, California. At age 12, he became one of the few inner-city students chosen to attend school in the affluent West San Fernando Valley of L.A. County. After graduating high school, Richard could not afford to attend college. However, the dream of becoming a college graduate never left him. After struggling with his sexuality for decades, Richard began to live his authentic life in his 30s. He met his partner James Brethour in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2008, and the two married in James’ native Toronto, Canada, in 2010. They now live in Los Alamos, NM. The moment Richard accepted his truth, he began to fight for equality. He spoke before the New Mexico State Senate, demanding the right to marry after witnessing friends lose their homes and financial security when a partner died. He joined the Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance (HRA), the organization that produces Santa Fe Pride and became president.

In addition to leading the HRA, Richard has served as Region 3 director, CAPI VP, and WorldPride Co-Chair. Richard and James started a small business, and Richard completed college, earned a Master’s in Healthcare Administration, received a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Disabilities (LEND) fellowship, and is now in the process of completing a Special Education Teaching certification. As V.P. of Accessibility, Diversity & Inclusion, I will continue to promote equality and equity to continue the evolution of InterPride.

Sean Sih-Cheng Du, Secretary-General, Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association Sean joined Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association in 2002 as a volunteer and has been since actively involved in the work on gender education and HIV prevention. He became Hotline's Director of Policy Advocacy in 2011 and the Secretary-General in 2021. His work includes gay men’s sexual health, workplace equality, and international affairs. He was a board member of the Taiwan Equality Campaign and a member of the Taipei City Committee of Gender Equality.

About Mei-Ying Juan (she/her)

Mei-Ying Juan, Director of Marketing, Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association Mei-Ying formerly gained experience as a social worker in sexual violence and HIV/AIDS. She is the first straight employee in Hotline as the Director of Marketing since 2015, and now she is responsible for telephone consultation service, connecting social movements aiming to publicize LGBTQ+ activities and workplace equality.

Mino Likwasi (they/them)

Mino Likwasi is a Zambian queer activist who co-founded the Women’s Alliance for Equality (WAFE). When Mino and their colleague noticed that visibility and interventions were mostly targeted at gay men, they decided to form WAFE, which aims to create a space for LBQ voices to be amplified within the broader LGBTQIA+ movement in Zambia. Along with being the co-founder of WAFE, Mino is also a trustee of The Other Foundation.

About Jannat Ali (she/her)

Jannat Ali is an MBA Gold Medalist, Transgender Artivist (Artist + Activist), and the Executive Director of a Community-Based Organization, Track-T. She is a TEDx motivational speaker, World Economic Forum Member, Global Trainer, and Change Mentor. Her work includes community capacity development, sensitization of civil society and institutions, advocacy, and trans healthcare. She is the founder of the Trans Pride March in Pakistan and has contributed immensely to the Legislation for the Protection of Trans Rights. Currently, she hosts a show, “Journey with Jannat.” Recently serving as the first Transgender Lecturer in Punjab at UMT (University of Management and Technology). She has traveled to and represented in more than 37 countries through her performance motivational speaker, panelist, trainer, ambassador, and Co-Chair of the Human Rights & Diversity Committee with InterPride. She is also Global Advisory Board Member at Dignity Network Canada.

Guest Speaker: Steven Muleme (he/him)

Uganda has approved some of the world’s harshest anti-gay laws, making homosexual acts punishable by death and imposing up to 20 years in prison for people identifying as LGBTQIA+.

Our guest speaker, Steven Muleme (he/him), is a gay Ugandan LGBTQIA+ advocate, founder, and director of an organization called Visual Echoes for Human Rights Advocacy (VEHRA), founded in 2017. The organization brings together some of Uganda's most marginalized LGBTQIA+ community members to connect through sport, art, and economic empowerment. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Commercial Industrial art and design from Nkumba University.

Steven is also the Illustrator for UHAI EASHRI. He holds certificates in HIV/AIDS prevention and training for the LGBTQIA+ community and a project planning and management certificate from Arrow Empirical Research & Skills Enhancement Co.Ltd Makerere University.

Kristine is a human rights activist with experience in organizing Prides in hostile and homophobic environments and has a vast experience in the security of Prides and human rights defenders in Eastern Europe and post-Soviet states.

Kristine was a co-chair of EuroPride 2015 in Riga. Kristine, one of the founders of MOZAIKA, has been on the organization’s board since 2006.

She has held the position of chair of Mozaika’s board for several years. She joined the Board of EPOA in 2013 and was elected President in 2015.

Graham Robertson (he/him) is a researcher, speaker, and activist from Toronto, Canada. He takes an anti-racist and youth-focused approach to his work, including with Canadian 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations such as Egale, the Get REAL Movement, and Dignity Network Canada. Graham has presented at national and international 2SLGBTQIA+ conferences, such as the Canada Pride Human Rights Conference and the InterPride World Conference. Graham has a master’s degree in Human Rights and Politics from the London School of Economics, where his research focused on advancing 2SLGBTQIA+ rights through foreign policy and international assistance.

About Dr. Nas Mohamed (they/them)

Since coming out, Dr. Nas has been involved with a very extensive international campaign. He is connected to the larger LGBT community in Qatar and has been working with Amnesty International, the human rights watch, and the international lesbian and gay association to get some accurate reflections and reports on country conditions for LGBT Qataris. This is time sensitive because this is the first time LGBT rights in Qatar are being discussed and there are no reports of what has been happening on the grounds. Ozlam has mobilized dozens of brave LGBTQIA+ Afghan activists to show up and fight for their right to live and be free.

In honor of IDAHOBIT, we speak with Nadine Smith (she/her), Executive Director of Equality Florida. Nadine leads the state's largest organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

An award-winning journalist turned organizer, Nadine was one of four national co-chairs of the 1993 March on Washington. She was part of the historic meeting between then-President Clinton - the first Oval Office meeting between a sitting President and LGBTQIA+ community leaders. She served on the founding board of the International Gay and Lesbian Youth Organization. She is a Florida Chamber Foundation Trustee and served on President Obama's National Finance Committee.

Nadine has been named one of the state's "Most Powerful and Influential Women" by the Florida Diversity Council. She has received the League of Women Voters' Woman of Distinction Award, in 2018 was named one of the 100 Most Influential Floridians by Influence Magazine, and in 2022, was recognized in the TIME100, Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. She currently serves as chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Florida Advisory Committee.

Marsha currently serves as one of four of InterPride’s Vice Presidents of Global Outreach and Partnership Management and the Co-President of USAP (United States Association of Prides). She is recognized as the Founder of InterPride and a co-founder of CAPI, Inc. (Consolidated Associations of Pride, Inc.).

Pat Tietgens and Michelle Zhang share their love story as a lesbian Chinese American immigrant couple.

Michelle Zhang was born and raised in China, where she practiced law for nearly ten years. Michelle met her American wife Pat at a lesbian bar in Southwest China in 2012. Pat Tietgens was born and raised in San Jose, California, and she worked for the University of Washington in China, where she lived for nearly seven years. Michelle and Pat share a passion for cross-border and cross-cultural LGBTQ advocacy and community work.

Thanks to marriage equality in the US, they were legally married in San Francisco in 2016. Before leaving China, they held a uniquely open wedding ceremony to help raise awareness, and 150,000 people watched live across mainland China. This bold decision was the subject of multiple articles and a short film that reached over 5 million viewers in China. Michelle continues her passion for representation and belonging as the founder of a nonprofit called Society of Heart’s Delight. Pat serves on the LGBTQ PAC Bay Area Municipal Elections Committee board. Michelle and Pat are small business owners who run an event/consulting business in the Bay Area.

Lesbian Visibility Week: Victoria Kolakowski American Judge

Victoria Kolakowski (born August 29, 1961, in Queens, New York) is an American lawyer who has served as a judge of the Alameda County Superior Court since January 2011. She is married with two children. Kolakowski is the first openly transgender person to serve as a trial court judge of general jurisdiction in the United States, be elected to a judgeship, and serve as any type of judge in California. She is also the first openly transgender person to be elected to a judgeship in the state of California.

Kolakowski worked as an administrative law judge for the California Public Utilities Commission for four years before she was elected to the position on November 2, 2010, with 51 percent of the vote to her opponent’s 48 percent.

During the years 1996 to 2000, she served as co-chair of the Bay Area Transgender Law Association. The National Association of Women Judges has been a part of her professional life since 2006.

Kolakowski served as president of the International Association of LGBT Judges from 2015 to 2017, making her the first transgender person to hold the position in the organization’s history.

A Christian, Kolakowski is a retired ordained preacher from the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, a Protestant Christian group.

Tiffany Woods is a wife, mother of three, trans woman, activist, and recognized LGBTQ+ leader. She is an Appointed California Democratic Party Delegate by Rep Barbara Lee, CD-13, (3 terms) and the 1st Trans Woman to be elected a California Democratic Party Caucus Chair as Co-Chair of the LGBTQ Caucus in 2019 re-elected in 2021. She is a 20201 appointed member of the CDP Credentials Standing Committee. She served as Secretary of the LGBT Caucus, 2017–2019. She was selected by Speaker Pro-Tem Toni Atkins as one of eight LGBTQ Californians selected as a CA LGBTQ Legislative Caucus Pride Honoree in 2020. An At-Large Hillary Clinton Delegate to the DNC in 2016, she is one of the first three trans delegates to ever attend the Democratic National Convention from California and a member of the historic first-ever DNC Transgender Caucus.

In 2017, she became an Emerge CA 2017 and Equality California Leadership Institute Alumna. Tiffany has worked in HIV Prevention and Trans Health for 20+ years creating and implementing innovative, nationally and internationally recognized inclusive health care programs for transgender and gender nonbinary folx. She has trained medical providers and Police Academy recruits on trans identity and community relations and provided technical assistance to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) International in Central America for their National Trans Health Service Strategy in Guatemala and Panama. She currently works at the California Department of Public Health, Office of AIDS, as the first Transgender Health and Community Engagement Specialist and state Co-Chair for the California HIV Planning Group.

The attack on the Transgender community is global. There are concerted efforts to roll back LGBTQIA+ rights and the Transgender community is at the front of those attacks.

Sandra Morán Reyes (born April 29, 1960) is a Guatemalan politician who was elected to the Guatemalan Congress in the 2015 election. She is the daughter of a former president of the country. She is the first openly lesbian to be elected to the national legislature in Guatemala, and she is widely regarded as the country's first out LGBTQIA+ person. She is a Convergence member, a new progressive party that was elected to the assembly with two other members in its first year. She has been an LGBTQIA+ and feminist activist and artist for many years, and she was the organizer of Guatemala's first lesbian group in 1995 and the country's first LGBTQIA+ Pride event in 1998. She had previously lived in exile in Mexico, Nicaragua, and Canada between 1981 and 1994, during which time she became a mother. She became involved in Guatemala's human rights movement when she was fourteen years old while attending high school. She was also involved in the music industry, having been a member of the band Kin Lalat in the 1980s.

WorldPride: The Fight For Acceptance

InterPride is proud to present the first-ever episode of InterPod focused on WorldPride: The Fight For Acceptance.

The LGBTQIA+ community has come a long way in the fight for acceptance. Our voices matter and will be heard.

Join us for the first episode where we hear from Somali immigrant and trans activist who lives in Denmark, Moeisha Ali Aden.

We also hear from a former Professional Ice hockey player who is the third player to come out in the world of hockey, Jon Lee-Olsen.

With WorldPride going on, we also hear from the Copenhagen WorldPride Chairperson since 2013, Lars Henriksen.

As if that weren't enough, we have the honor of hearing from an Italian LGBTQIA+ leader who launched and organized the first-ever WorldPride in Rome back in 2000, Imma Battaglia.

There's a first for everything in the world, and we hear from Queer performing artist Jean Michel and his new song for the first time, Heartbreak.

Our closing guest is Kate Wickett, the first-ever woman CEO leading WorldPride in Sydney in 2023!
