We consider the labour of love that is importing and exporting new rose cultivars to and from Aotearoa, New Zealand. Part 1: This episode Dharini talks to Samantha Matthews from Matthews Roses, established in Whanganui in 1947. Samantha describes the family and nursery history of Matthews Roses, the ups and downs of the nursery trade, and keeping plant libraries or gene banks alive while balancing the commercial and creative aspects of the business. Samantha explains the strain that Covid-19 put on their summer budding programme and the work that goes in to producing a new rose. We discuss rose basics and rose breeding, from pollination through to rigorous spray-free nursery trials, and assessments from the Matthews Roses team.
