Umuganura, an Ancient Practice of Giving Thanks

Umuganura, an Ancient Practice of Giving Thanks

Did you know? #Umuganura is a day of thanksgiving that was not celebrated at the end of the harvest, but just as the first fruits of the harvest began to be seen. In Ancient Rwanda, it was an occasion to give thanks to God and the Ancestors for the harvest and all good things in life. The elders tasted the first fruits first.🥝

If you've had a chance to witness flowers turn to fruit, you know that it's an exciting moment indeed. You may have worked hard tilling the soil and watering the plant to come to this point, or the fruit comes as a pure gift from nature, neighbors, family, strangers, or friends.🎁

Maybe the rain came abundantly and watered the plant for you, maybe a benevolent helper stepped in and contributed labor, or maybe the bees brought about a little extra pollen this time around.🐝

I'm touched by the idea of celebrating the first fruits because in a way, it's an act of faith. It's an early celebration for what is yet to come. There is a lot that is yet unknown, but it is still time to give thanks for what is. Today, if you don't work on a farm, it's easy to miss those moments, when the first pop of color brings with it a transformation from flower to fruit, one you've been waiting for. 🥀

2020 has been a challenging year for sure, but I'm inspired to look for the first harvest, however small it might be. It's still a first fruit, it's still worth celebrating…No two years are ever the same, Here is to spotting the first fruits, in all areas of life. 🎹

What's your first fruit? Happy thanksgiving! 🇷🇼

Iraba Cosmetics' big idea: Following nature's lead in protecting our hormones, scalp, skin, hair, and kids!

Iraba Cosmetics' big idea: Following nature's lead in protecting our hormones, scalp, skin, hair, and kids!

You might know that the main sponsor to this podcast is Iraba Cosmetics. I thought it might be a good time to mention what the big idea is behind this brand, and why Iraba Cosmetics does what it does...

Here it is:

Whether we like it or not, hair is a big part of how we see ourselves. Iraba asserts that with the right tools, we can appreciate our natural curl pattern, and realize that this hair that is so close to our faces is a big part of what makes each one of us both unique, and incomparable. That we, therefore, owe it to ourselves to care for those curls with the best stuff ever.

We, at Iraba, think that the best stuff comes from nature. That no matter how smart we get, it's going to be hard to beat nature's chemistry. So we work with natural materials, and enhance them to fit our lifestyles, and embody our values: Goodness, Ease, and Simplicity.

Practically that means being extra particular about ingredients. So we’ve developed a standard to guide us in ingredient selection. This standard rests on 4 pillars

The first is to Protect our hormones. Hormones are the messengers of our bodies, they run around telling our bodies what to do. Hormones are sensitive to input, and certain chemicals are a bit confusing to our hormones, making them fire off messages that they shouldn’t be. Chemicals that have the potential to cause this confusion are called hormone disruptors, and this is why we don’t use them.

The second pillar is to Protect our scalp, skin, and Hair - that’s why we don’t use ingredients that are unnecessarily harsh. You’ve probably heard of sulfates, and lye, but there are many more. We stay clear of those as well.

The third pillar is to be Safe for kids. That one is pretty self explanatory, we also don’t see why we families shouldn’t be able to share products.

The fourth and final pillar, as I mentioned, is that nature knows best, so we watch and learn. In awe. Whenever possible, we choose to include natural materials, from the African continent preferably. Nature was a medicine cabinet for our ancestors, surely it can be a cosmetics cabinet for us now. We just need to know where to look.

What if life was a science experiment?

What if life was a science experiment?

As people we're designed to operate with very little information. We tend to fill in the blanks on stuff we don't by guessing, or extrapolating wildly. It's a way to simplify. The scientific method creates rigour and aims to eliminate bias. What if we used this method to consistently prove ourselves right or wrong? We could become more accepting, effective human beings with the potential to make an impact in the world.
