SEASON 4 / EPISODE 11: On a hot summer day I took a drive to Lewiston, Maine where I met 91-year-young Don Robitaille at his home of 63 years. His darling wife poured me a glass of lemonade over ice as we sat down at their kitchen table to record the final episode of season 4 — where Don primarily shared snippets and stories from his solo ride from Maine to Seattle at the age of 70. Full of great advice and stories of heartwarming interactions, I felt lucky to have had the conversation.

OH, and today (August 25) is Don’s 92 birthday! Happy Birthday Don!! To many more years of pedaling!

w/ Tim Bruce

Season 4 / Episode 10: I met Tim Bruce while having post-race beers after Rasputitsa in East Burke, VT in April 2023. We were all chatting about the day and sharing our experiences, and then Tim started to share some bike stories from years past. I had him hit pause and asked if he'd like to share them on the mic (which didn't take much convincing) so we reconnected a couple months later to record this episode. There are the standard memories from first bikes and that excitement from the early years, and a great recounting of his recent ride at the Unbound Gravel in Kansas. But what really makes this episode special is the story he shares about one particular year at the Leadville 100, and riding with his dad in an attempt to finally get him his sub-12hr buckle and become an "official finisher" after many years attempting this monumental feat. --

BIKE SHORTS w/ Jordan Parks

BIKE SHORTS Episode 5: We had just turned off the mic after recording the final episode of Season 3 when Jordan Parks started in on another story. I immediately stopped her and said “This is perfect for a Bike Shorts episode!” so we sat back down for a few more minutes, where she shares a mysterious tale of being watched by 100 eyes while riding at dusk in Ojai. What do you think it was?!

--

WHAT IS BIKE SHORTS? I often chat with fellow cyclists that say they don’t have enough bike-related stories to fill a full episode, so the idea of BIKE SHORTS was born! Still a bit rough around the edges, I hope you find it interesting and follow along as I work through the process.

w/ Tira Denny

Season 4 / Episode 9: With Tira Denny's race season in full swing (and an energetic toddler at home), I was so appreciative that she shared a bit of her valuable down time to chat bike stories on the mic. We start with an early memory, where a long bike ride and a bit of bribery turned into a brand new bike thanks to her dad. Then we travel across the Atlantic to a time when an ambitious London adventure turned into a less-than-exciting UberX ride. And I particularly enjoyed hearing how endurance racing began with a rather simple goal of self-fulfillment through competition, and how her partner Mike and their daughter Zoey have now honed her focus and determination to the level of a champion.

BIKE SHORTS w/ Eric Brackett

BIKE SHORTS w/ Eric Brackett

BIKE SHORTS Episode 4: Last October (‘22) I sat down with my good friend and adventure buddy Eric Brackett to record this episode of Bike Shorts. He said he had a story he’d been holding on to, and wanted to get my honest reaction while we were on the mic. And this one certainly didn’t disappoint! Without giving it all away, it’s a stolen bike story that doesn’t go exactly as you might expect when a man known as Wolf enters the picture.

Sadly, in January of 2023, Nicholas “Wolf” Gardner’s life was cut tragically short. After learning of this, I wanted to give some time before releasing this episode. I also took some time to read about Wolf through words written by his family. It’s yet another reminder that we never know the true story behind those we may have a chance encounter with. So please listen to the episode, then read his obituary and some of the notes people left. There’s also a video at the bottom to see his life in pictures.

w/ Michael Stefanakos

SEASON 4 / EPISODE 8: When looking back at his childhood, Michael's single greatest Christmas was when we walked into the living room to find a beautiful gold and silver bike from Montgomery Ward leaning against the wall. And he's been hooked ever since. As he grew, so did his style of riding and the types of bikes that where associated — from BMX with giant back-yard jumps to a Schwinn Varsity that he took for a 100-mile ride when he was only 12 while listening to 38 Special on repeat. Later in his teens he found inspiration watching the Tour de France on The Wide World of Sports and still has a special fondness for John Tesh which he's more than happy to admit. These days you can find him riding with his sons or helping kids find the joy of MTB racing through the Southern Maine Mountain Bike Syndicate, which he helped to start.

w/ Eric Desautels

SEASON 4 / EPISODE 7: Eric Desautels wasn't really into T-ball as a kid, so when his dad convinced him to take his first group MTB ride at the age of 6, it was on a bike that he discovered what would become his life's passion and joy. He quickly started entering some local races, and by the time he was in his early teens, he was already winning championships up against kids several years older. In addition to the races, there were healthy doses of your standard backyard BMX shenanigans, riding miles and miles to buy a Coke, and just the pure joy of summer adventures. And even as he competes at the Elite level now, the simple pleasure of riding a bike maintains the base for living a happy, healthy life. BIKE SHORTS Episode 3: When local kite-boarding legend and amazing trail builder Scott Furr first shared his story of an unexpected encounter with a porcupine while on a night ride, I knew I had to get him on the mic for an episode of Bike Shorts. SEASON 4 / EPISODE 6: Bike-riding enthusiast, author, and super rad mom Leah Day was kind enough to share a few great bike stories between her Friday group ride and opening her bike shop to the public. Her fire for adventure was ignited at an early age while living in Philadelphia, and when you hear her stories of a cross-country bike tour with her son Oakley, or her recent solo ride over the Andes Mountains, her energy and excitement is sure to inspire. And if you're one of the listeners that may not have ridden in a while, do yourself a favor and head to Lighthouse Bikes! w/ Mardi Millay

SEASON 4 / EPISODE 5: Artist and photographer Mardi Millay rode her bike over on a beautiful spring day to share stories of her life's journey — which began in a Cambodian orphanage in the late 1980s. After an arduous beginning, Mardi and 9 international siblings were adopted by a family on the coast of Maine, where cycling really began to take hold. She recounts first memories of riding bikes around the Bar Harbor area, but it’s when she moved to Portland that she really got her first taste of the freedom and independence a bike would allow. Now she rides as often as possible; always learning, looking, listening and most importantly — finding adventure and treasure wherever she goes. Her ultimate goal is to ride her bike around the U.S. — to discover and document what America means, from her own unique perspective.

SEASON 4 / EPISODE 4: Last minute sessions are some of the best. So when critical care nurse (and wannabe home remodeler) Garrett Curtis took a quick buzz through Southern Maine before heading back to Fruita, Colorado, we set up the mics and hit record. Originally from the booming metropolis of Bangor, Maine, Garrett recounted his early years on two wheels — from the time he accidentally invented the removable handlebar for a particularly memorable jump, to bombing around the aptly-named "no man's land" behind the old junkyard. And though he rode quite a bit growing up, it was while on a job assignment in Utah that the undeniable love of mountain biking really took hold. Now he spends as much time as he can ripping the red rocks and dirt trails of Colorado and Utah with his dog Rosie, girlfriend Sarah, and anyone else with the energy to tag along. Speaking of Sarah, thanks for the intro, AND for the mid-session beer delivery!

We start in Queens, NY where he grew up as an adventurous young bike rider heading into Manhattan — much to the dismay of his mother. And how over the following years, no matter where life took him, the bike continued to grow as an important aspect of his day-to-day life. From the first Critical Mass rides in San Francisco, to first experiences riding a bike through a Vermont winter. And no, he didn’t use his cargo bike to move. Though he most definitely thought about it.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 12: Community oriented visual artist Jordan Parks took a quick break from the surf to sit down and chat bike stories for the final episode of Season 3. From her first memories of receiving the pure magic of a Lion King bike at the age of 5, through her most recent bike-packing adventure across New England, Jordan has a very wonderful and happy connection to bikes. We hear fun stories of  learning about the “turnaround point” while riding with her mom as a kid, to being a pedicab operator while attending college at MassArt, and how she’s found “her people” and a great home base living in Maine. Jordan is also an amazing visual artist, surfer, adventurer, tinkerer and advocate for making riding bikes accessible and approachable for everyone.  She even brought along a surprise guest — Gordie the dog — to keep Louie the dog company as they played in the background.

CHECK IT OUT:
Tune in early 2023 to hear Jordan on an episode of BIKE SHORTS, where we hear of a super-natural experience while on a ride in Ojai.

w/ Dave Snyder

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 11: Dave Snyder first swung his leg over a bike at 1-years old, and though he admits there may be a few foggy memories along the way, he can only remember ever crashing once. Pretty impressive for a guy, that as of today, has ridden over 17,000 miles just this year! But that wasn’t always the case. Due to some unexpected trials and tribulations, Dave took a very long hiatus from riding a bike — nearly 17 years. And during that time, he found himself on a very unhealthy path. Reaching over 300 lbs, full of aches and pains, he knew he needed to make a change for the better. And that’s where the bike re-entered his life, along with a much healthier relationship with mind, body, and spirit. Dave recounts the process he went through to feel healthy again, and the associated attitude shift that allows him to share his genuine smile and undeniable love for two wheels again. Both a great guy, and a wonderful inspiration, it was great chatting with Dave.

w/ Dereck "Tread" Treadwell

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 10: Director of Mountain Biking and Road Cycling at Gould Academy, Dereck “Tread” Treadwell took some time out of his busy fall schedule to give me a tour of their amazing facility before jumping on the mic and chatting about his history with bikes. We begin with his early years growing up in Old Town, Maine where his love of nature and sense of adventure started to take hold. He then shared some fun experiences involving bears that ran along side him, eagles that swooped down in front of him, and sea turtles that swam all around him. But it was when he started talking about his present role as coach and mentor for the next generation of competitive riders that he really got excited. So if riding bikes isn’t already great enough, having someone like Tread giving support most certainly brings the experience to the next level.

w/ Bill Yeo

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 9: Lifelong adventurer and world-class human Bill Yeo carries with him an undeniable spirit that is both inspiring and humbling. And it was obvious from the start of our conversation that I could have an entire season dedicated to stories of his travels. But we only had an hour to chat (this time), so we jumped right in. We start with memories of a first bike from Western Auto, getting a taste of freedom when he realized at age six he could ride solo all the way to the shopping center, and that with two wheels and an imagination, he could go pretty much anywhere. And he did!! Bill shares a few anecdotes from of his “Ride of Innocence” — where he and his brother Mike took their first bike-packing adventure across Africa with little knowledge of the calamities that might present themselves on the road ahead. We then hear about a months-long trip through the Amazon and into Columbia where cycling is the national pastime— so that even with broken Spanish, the universal language of the bike was all that was needed to connect with the people of that beautiful country.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 8: Action sports personality and sales marketing professional Nelson Wormstead blocked off his lunch hour to sit with me at his dining room table and chat bike (and other) stories. With his inherent addictive personality and desire to chase the slowing down of time, he’s always pushing himself to go higher, faster and farther… all while slightly reminded that we’re not exactly kids anymore. And when Nelson isn’t finding himself in that zone — whether riding bikes, skating or snowboarding — he can be found crushing it in the action sports industry as a member of the Vans sales leadership team, or behind the mic announcing events like the Bejing Winter Olympics, X Games, or Burton US Open.

BIKE SHORTS w/ Frank & Callen Hwang

BIKE SHORTS w/ Frank & Callen Hwang

BIKE SHORTS Episode 2: In this episode, we get a 2-for-1 with adventure dad Frank Hwang and his rad daughter Callen. We’d been trying to connect for the better part of 2022, and on a beautiful day in late September it finally worked out. Sitting in their garage, surrounded by all the fun “toys” of a family that loves the outdoors, we start with Frank on the mic where he shares two short stories, both involving the pain and hilarity that surrounds an arduous hill climb. Next up, 13 year old Callen Hwang shares her unique perspective and memories of first bikes, the amazing fun that a full-suspension can bring, and that even a nasty crash will only slow her down momentarily.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 7: Professional endurance mountain biker and mental health advocate Kelly Catale has always had a competitive streak — from her earliest biking memory of trying to out-do her twin sister when first learning to ride, to Marathon Mountain Bike World Circuit as a rider for Team USA. And if there’s one thing I quickly learned during our conversation, it’s that Kelly Catale only knows one way to do things: WITH BOTH FEET, ALL IN! There have been a multitude of triumphs, some memorable type 2 fun, and some much-needed type 1 fun. But having spent 30+ years dedicated to finding glory at the finish line, it hasn’t always been easy.  Opening up about her own mental health, she also shares with us a voice that a lot of people feel, but can be too shy or embarrassed to vocalize. It was wonderful to spend time with such a determined and caring human.

You can read more on Kelly’s blog, where she recommends you simply “Start the conversation.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 6: Musician Jenner Fox is an amazing singer songwriter, but the fact that he does many of his tours by bike (thanks in large part to Xtracycle), this was one of my most anticipated conversations for the podcast. Thanks to a friend who alerted me to his northeast tour, I was able to catch him and his bandmate Jeremy at Blue in Portland, Maine before sitting down for the fun and meandering conversation. We chatted about the earlier years of learning to ride in a church parking lot, a hilarious story of a family mountain bike trip that quickly went awry, and how the contemplative aspect of riding a bike became a large part of his songwriting process. Of all the stories, I particularly liked the ones involving human kindness on his travels — with one that had happened just the day before when they met Bruces from Bruce’s Burritos in Yarmouth, Maine during the heaviest rainstorm they had yet to encounter on their tour. And we finished the show with a performance of his bike inspired song “Tongue Canyon Road” before they jumped on their bikes and headed on to their next performance.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 5: Not only was Travis Dustin kind enough to make the drive to Scarborough to get on the mic, but he also brought along some really great bike stories. From the time he was tricked into picking out his own bike as a 5-year old, to an eventful run-in with a Colorado farmer while on a road trip to Arizona. But my favorite part of this episode is the excitement when it comes to riding bikes with family — to which I couldn’t agree more.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 4: L.L. Bean CEO Steve Smith is a busy guy, but he always makes time for family, friends and outdoor adventures. And while spending a sunny morning on Cousins Island together, we were able to incorporate all three into a fun episode of the podcast. He recounted his early love for being a gear junky, using his paper route money to buy, and then continually upgrade his childhood dream bike — an early ‘80s Mongoose BMX. There were of course the crash stories — one resulting in two broken thumbs (definitely a dad joke in there somewhere), hair-raising encounters with various deadly wildlife in Florida, being humbled on the Mount Washington Auto Road Hillclimb by a rider with a handlebar basket and white tennis outfit, and his many riding [mis]adventures while living abroad.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 3: During a quick trip to NYC, I was lucky enough to sit down with Brendt Barbur, the Founding Director of the Bicycle Film Festival. Heading into their 22nd year and having weathered the Covid pandemic, the BFF is slowly but surely getting back onto the world stage. We could’ve easily talked for hours about all sorts of things, but we did our best to stay on topic. From his early years growing up in Northern California, to taking his creative passion for film across the county and starting a life in New York City, and how the experience of getting hit by a bus while riding a bike was ultimately the fuel for founding the BFF.  Not only did I learn a lot about the multiple facets of such a great organization, but it was a real pleasure to speak to such a passionate and creative person.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 2: THAT’S RIGHT! It’s DAVE, … from before! I met up with comedian Mr Dave Hill on the mean streets of the West Village, where he clearly ruled all that we could see. But it was noisy so we retreated to his deck, along with his suspiciously friendly hellhound Lucy, to chat about bikes and stuff. He’s the first to admit that he may not know a lot about bikes, but it’s clear to anyone that’s seen him ride, he is certainly the best at bikes. So we talked about some of his sweet tricks, surviving the pandemic, his lifetime ban from Twitter, and ripping sweet solos on his guitar — all while doing his best to name drop celebrities he may or may not know. In all seriousness though, it was a super fun 2 hrs with one of the nicest guys to ever rule the masses. But that Lucy though… pure evil.

Check out Dave’s amazingly hilarious videos at @mrdavehill and marvel at his skills. He knows A LOT.

SEASON 3 / EPISODE 1: If you had told me during my first episode that I’d be kicking off Season 3 with Bill “Cru Jones” Allen, I’d have called BS. But that’s exactly what happened! We set up in the “Times Square Studio” (aka, Holiday Inn Express Times Square) and once I got past all the “MAN! THIS IS SOOO COOL!” I hit record and we chatted about his path to RAD stardom, being a cult movie hero, and living his best life by staying true to doing things that make him happy — and saying no to the things that don’t. Pretty RAD indeed.

BIKE SHORTS / Pilot Episode

BIKE SHORTS / Pilot Episode

“BIKE SHORTS” PILOT EPISODE - NEMBAFEST 2022

I often chat with fellow cyclists that say they don’t have enough bike-related stories to fill a full episode, so the idea of BIKE SHORTS was born! This pilot episode was recorded as a test at NEMBAfest 2022, and overall, I’m happy with the direction! Initially I was going to release each interview as a single episode, but decided for this first one, I’d just drop them into one chronological mashup as it happened on August 6, 2022. I hope you find it interesting and follow along as I work through the process.

During one of the hottest days of the summer, I was able to grab 7 different people — each with their own background, voice and take on what it is to ride a bike. Listen in as I chat with John Aldrich who shares a story about the 6th time he was hit by a car, Melinda Martens talks about getting the biking bug after trying her brothers BMX when she was 7, and Lindsay Currier shares her full-circle story about starting mountain biking in Maine, her path to riding out west and how 20 years later she’s stoked to call Maine her home again. I then sat with Emily Elswick who at 28yrs old learned to ride a bike for the first time and now can’t imagine a life without riding, Peter Graves who’s known throughout the cycling world for his work as an announcer at 13 Olympic Games, Justin Nardella reminisces about getting into riding mountain bikes as a kid on a golf course, and finally Josh Brown shares some stoke on coming to Maine for the first time and how lucky he feels to be working with Transition.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 13: Not only did I have an amazing time with my dad in Bar Harbor, but I was also able to connect with our friend @kaitlin.cough for the final episode of Season 2! We’d been trying to make it happen since last fall, and as things usually do, it [finally] worked out perfectly. We set up in the “MDI Studio” and after some off-mic catching up on life and such, we dove into some fun adventure stories. The better part of this episode follows Kate as she rode for several months from Portugal to Morocco and then through Eastern Africa. Startling experiences that turn to joyful exchanges surrounded by mounds of olives, listening to the gut when it says sleeping in a brothel is safer than a campground, and that being out of your comfort zone can often lead to such unexpected joy.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 12: It’s always fun “going on the road” to meet up with another guest for the podcast. Another beautiful drive, this time to Amherst NH, connected me with SVP of Product Development for Vittoria, Ken Avery. Our mutual friend Beau Lambert introduced us and from the moment we sat down it was obvious why these two have been friends for so many years. Stories on stories on stories, we sat at the dining room table and discussed the early days of getting the racing bug as part of the neighborhood riding crew, how serendipity after a blown tube can lead to a lifetime career of helping design the worlds best tires, and that keeping your mind and eyes open is the best way to get from here to there, no matter the path ahead. And the chalkboard behind him certainly speaks to this truth.

Now I just need to get Ken and Beau together and see who taps out first on the storytelling.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 11: It was a rainy day in March when Spencer Albee and I connected at his studio to record Episode 11. You might know of Spencer from his involvement in many music endeavors over the years such as Rustic Overtones, As Fast As, Spencer and the Walrus, and most recently, Palomino Motel — and through it all (when not making music) he’s ridden a bike. But first we start with his first memories of thrashing around on a Big Wheel and then follow along through the early years as he and his bike crew Justin and Jason upgraded their rides and adventured around Cape Neddick, Maine. We hear about finding the [apparently] ubiquitous “woods porn stash”, buying his own bike at LL Bean with lawn-mowing money, taking a bike on tour (much to the chagrin of his bandmates), and appreciating the health benefits of riding a bike as we get older.

And of course I forgot to take photos in March, so we reconnected in June for the necessary selfie on a much nicer day — not to mention I was able to meet his new furry family member. Win win.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 10: It was nearly 6 months in the making, but in late April I was finally able to connect with Bruce Papps. At 84 years young, he rides his bike every day and had already clocked over 600 miles in 2022. As he says “if it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen.”

But first, let’s back up a second. Last fall Bruce was featured on
WMUR TV for a segment called “Why a Laconia veteran bikes 23 miles a day at 83 years old.” His daughter Debbie sent me the link and said that maybe he’d be a good guest for the podcast. I was thrilled at the idea but out of precaution we waited out the winter. Finally the day arrived and I took the beautiful 2 hour drive from Scarborough to Laconia NH, where I was greeted by Debbie, Bruce and his darling wife Joyce. We all sat in the living room as I hit record and we dove into the stories of a life on bikes — from his first bright red bike that he bought by raking blueberries for an entire summer, to his 35 years of commuting to work on a bike, to his secrets for a long, healthy and happy life.

Afterward, as I was packing up, I was invited to stay for lunch. How could I refuse a roast beef sandwich, chips, pickles and a root beer on crushed ice?! And topped off with a bowl of Jordan’s ice cream. At this point I jokingly said I may just need to take a nap on the couch, full-well meaning I simply was having such a delightful time I didn’t want to leave. But alas it was time for Bruce to go for a ride, so we said goodbye for now. With a ziplock bag of homemade cookies in hand, I smiled the entire way home and I’m already looking forward to us connecting on bikes this summer.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 9: Abbie and I had been trying to connect for a while, and I was stoked to finally sit down with her on a beautiful Saturday to chat bike stories! She made the round trip all the way from Bangor to Scarborough (over 4 hrs) and when I expressed my sincere thanks for the effort, she said “Not a problem! Plus you live near the Cheese Iron and now I can shop for Mothers Day.” So it was a win win for us both, except now I need some cheese.

While getting the mics set up we were able to catch up on life a bit before hitting record and diving in to lifetime of bike stories. I got to hear about growing up in northern Maine and making friends while conquering the fear of a monster hill, how riding bikes (and being outside in general) can bring joy and salvation when it’s needed the most, and how unplanned adventures can lead to the most exciting experiences in places like Guatemala, Iceland and the Philippines.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 8: Not only did Beau Lambert drive all the way to my spot in Scarborough, but he also brought along some homemade rosemary olive oil and lunch! It was a fantastic start to a really fun conversation that we could’ve easily turned into a couple episodes. We chatted about the early years of growing up in rural Maine, taking a break from college to head west without a map (literally and perhaps figuratively), finding passion in competitive mountain bike racing, and giving back through programs that helps to get kids on bikes and skateboards.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 7: If you’ve spent any time in Carrabassett Valley over the past 28 years to mountain bike, you likely know the man, the myth, and the legend known as Bob Ash. I was lucky enough to join him at his sweet little house nestled along the Carrabassett River and chat his years of adventure — from growing up in California in the 60s & 70s to his days as Utah ski patrol in the 80s and finally to Maine in the 90s where his love for all things bikes really took hold.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 6: Was so great to meet Zach and spend some time chatting bike stories on a cold Friday in February. We talked about the benefit of bike “junkyards”, the joy of growing up surrounded by family, and taking on adventures that can push our limits only to find we CAN do it. I particularly liked the story about a 120 mile round-trip ride to hike and ski Mt Washington. And yes, he carried all his gear too. Even Louie enjoyed the conversation from the chair.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 5: Just a couple of Seth’s talking about bikes. Had a great chat with 2-time Olympic Gold medalist Seth Wescott for Season 2 of I RIDE A BIKE. We talked about how great it is to grow up in the country — and the freedom a bike can bring. The slow and steady growth of mountain biking in Maine, and finding that peaceful flow-state whether on a snowboard, surfboard or bike.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 4: With so many great things happening in the biking world at Sugarloaf (@sugarloafmountain), it was natural to have another guest with solid mountain bike connections to the area. I met up with Nick Karahalios (who runs @vintage_sugarloaf) late in the afternoon and he was kind enough to bring along some refreshing beverages from Moat Mountain (@moatmtnbrewco) to keep us hydrated while we chatted bikes. He reminisced about his first rides as a kid in Southern Maine, mowing lawns to get his first Gary Fisher in 1998 from Bob Ash, an eventful Superman through the back of a pickup truck (he was fine, the truck was not), and his love of racing single speeds.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 3: We had both traveled to Sugarloaf Mountain for the annual Carrabassett Fat Tire Race — which thanks to a lot of really light, fluffy snow — was postponed for a couple weeks. This left us with a more flexible schedule, and we were able to connect at “Brackett Basin Studios” to chat about him fulfilling his dream of owning a bike shop in Hawaii, being a constant proponent of human-powered transportation and his exciting new role as Executive Director of NEMBA.

SEASON 2 / EPISODE 2: It was one of the coldest days of the winter when Steve “DOOM” Fassbinder and I connected at 7am in the basement of a friends house in Portland, Maine to chat bikes. He and his partner where visiting from Colorado, and thankfully for me, a mutual acquaintance introduced us just before they headed back west. Technically the first recording of the new season, we sat on boxes and drank coffee as I did my best to remember how to podcast. We chatted about his first of many hike-a-bike adventures as a kid, solo adventures in the Himalayas, discovering his passion of bikerafting and ultimately launching Four Corners Guides to share it with like-minded adventurers. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos, but otherwise it was such a fun session hearing stories of his amazing travels.

SEASON 1 / EPISODE 11: It was a dreary, rainy day when Jamie Walter (IG: @jwalter1337 / Website: JamieWalter.com) stopped by the garage studio, but the coffee and stoke level helped keep the cold at bay. We chatted about his passion for outdoor adventure sports and how he’s been able to combine that with his skills as a photographer, how he found the sport of mountain biking at Sugarloaf during the “best summer of his life” and his experience as crew on a Maine Office of Tourism video about biking the Maine Coast called “You Can’t Get There From Here.”

SEASON 1, EPISODE 9: My buddy Chuck Martin (IG: cmprodxn) was kind enough to put down the boxes mid-move to have a cold beer and a fun conversation about how bikes have always played an important role in a happy life. SEASON 1, EPISODE 7: Having known of Alex Bogusky (@brogusky) for quite some time through his awesome YouTube channel “Joy of Bike” and his background in the world of advertising (Crispin Porter Bogusky), I was so stoked to finally connect in person to record Episode 7. We met at Valmont Bike Park in Boulder where many of his videos are shot, and over the course of a couple hours we touched on many things. Alex shared stories of growing up in Miami at the forefront of the BMX era, friends that become brothers through a shared bike connection, the pure joy and freedom that a bike can bring, and that sometimes it can also bring such unexpected heartache. Ending with smiles, appreciation, laughs and awareness, I was really happy to work on this one.

Such a pleasure to talk with, we discussed what it’s like growing up in Kansas, family bike adventures, the joy of owning a shop when surrounded and supported by amazing employees, and the luck of having his wife be his go-to for a life of riding and adventure — to which I couldn’t agree more.
