Maximizing Your Landscape's Health With Smart Irrigation Scheduling

Maximizing Your Landscape's Health With Smart Irrigation Scheduling

Setting an accurate irrigation schedule for your landscape is one of the most challenging activities for landscapers, homeowners, and water managers. It requires detailed information from the landscape and up-to-date information on weather and evapotranspiration. It’s time-consuming and often requires a visit to the controller to make changes.

Smart irrigation controllers that generate their schedules provide the most efficient water use. In addition, providing a customized irrigation schedule based on the plant’s needs improves plant health and growth. Finally, these schedules require input for the landscape, but once that is entered, the savings start adding up with every watering.

During this webinar, Andy Belingheri, National Sales Manager for Rivulis Irrigation, will take us through the steps needed to set an accurate irrigation schedule. He will demonstrate how easy it is to set up an intelligent controller to scientifically set an irrigation schedule and how it updates based on real-time evapotranspiration (‘ET’).

During this webinar, you will learn the following:

  • What data do you need to collect to set an irrigation schedule
  • How weather factors into an irrigation schedule
  • The landscape information you need to develop a schedule
  • How JAIN Unity software creates a schedule and accurately updates it with weather information daily

9 Reasons To Watch The 2023 GardenCommunity Virtual Sustainability Summit

9 Reasons To Watch The 2023 GardenCommunity Virtual Sustainability Summit

The Sustainability Summit is a 3-day virtual summit presenting sustainability leaders in the green industry. It looks at issues that affect everyone, whether you’re an industry professional or an individual consumer. It’s a collective of industry and business professionals who do amazing work, yet much of it goes unnoticed or overlooked, as much of the industry operates in silos.

What effects our gardens, effects our trees, effects our landscape, and effects our farms? It’s all connected. Consumers alike are concerned about climate change which can affect their choices, from the plants they buy for their gardens to having more sustainable landscapes, and seek to work at companies that align with their ideals.

In this webinar, Garden Comm Executive Director Chris Sabbarese reviews the nine speakers at the event and how attendees can best utilize the information they receive.

Here is a list of speakers.

  • Richard Restuccia, VP of Water Management Solutions at Jain Irrigation – Agricultural Irrigation
  • Danny Mishek, President of SelfEco/ Proven Winner – Compostable Plant Containers

When It Comes to Water, California is the Canary in the Gold Mine

When It Comes to Water, California is the Canary in the Gold Mine

The Golden State has been on the cutting edge of water management since statehood. Some moves have been bold but foolish—for instance, hydraulic miners blasting away mountainsides into mud floes they sluiced for gold.

Others have been nothing short of spectacular, like the state and federal water projects that convey water from the north part of the state to the rich farms and teeming communities of the southern part:

  • Farmers have adopted countless miles of drip tape and microemitter line to boost irrigation efficiency.
  • The Carlsbad desalination plant has produced 100 billion gallons of drinking water from seawater over the past 7 years.
  • Pure Water Monterey treats agricultural irrigation return flows, domestic wastewater, food processing wash water and stormwater to drinking water standards, then pumps it into the ground to recharge the groundwater.
  • The world’s largest water recycling plant is pumping fresh water into Orange County’s aquifer to prevent saltwater intrusion from the Pacific.

In this episode Jim Lauria will discuss these and other innovative initiatives and what made them unique as benchmark projects in the technologies they used and the results that have been achieved.

Ditching the Guesswork: How Online Irrigation Scheduling Apps Can Improve Crop Yields

Ditching the Guesswork: How Online Irrigation Scheduling Apps Can Improve Crop Yields

Accurate irrigation scheduling maximizes the benefits of irrigation and reduces the damage over-, or under-irrigation does to your crops. Often people schedule irrigation by feel rather than by plant need. Unfortunately, some irrigation scheduling methods can be wildly inaccurate since plant water needs and the amount of soil water available to plants are affected by climate, plant size, soil type, and rooting depth.

Accurate irrigation scheduling aims to replace soil water lost by evaporation and plant use as precisely as possible. There are several online apps available to help today with irrigation scheduling. In fact, the LSU AgCenter is about to release a new app that is adaptive to drought conditions. This is a unique app and one you want to take a look at.

During this Training episode, Dr. Stacia L Davis Conger from the LSU AgCenter will step us through online scheduling apps. During this webinar, you will learn the following:

  1. How and why online apps work for farming
  2. Why an online tool that considers drought is valuable
  3. How online tools are developed
  4. How the LSU AgCenter tool (in real-time) works

Tampa Florida Faces a Water Crisis of It's Own

Tampa Florida Faces a Water Crisis of It's Own

Cities in Florida have been mandated to eliminate all surface wastewater storage by the year 2032. Tampa, for example, currently produces 50 million gallons of reclaimed water a day. And it’s wastewater that’s all being dumped into the beautiful Hillsborough Bay, which is not an ideal means of disposal.

In this JAIN Irrigation Training Series episode Florida-based irrigation specialist Michael Derewenko will provide background and details on this water infrastructure challenge Tampa is facing, along with the recommendations for solutions that have been proposed by industry leading experts.

During this session, you will learn the following:

  • What is PURE?
  • Reviewing sustainable river flows
  • Toilet to Tap
  • Eliminating discharges into Hillsborough Bay

Beyond Tampa, this will soon be a common municipal water management issue for cities and their populations throughout the South, as well as across the entire U.S.

Backflow preventers are the insurance policy to stop this from happening. Use is mandatory, and water managers need to understand the basics of backflow preventers to keep our water systems safe.

In this episode of the JAIN Irrigation Training Series, Daniel Martinez will teach the basics of backflow prevention.

During this session, you will learn:
  1. What is a backflow device?
  2. Why you need a backflow preventer.
  3. How to select a backflow preventer.
  4. Regulations and types of backflows.

Water Demand and Scheduling Strategies for Pistachio Trees

Water Demand and Scheduling Strategies for Pistachio Trees

Today, the states of California, Arizona, and New Mexico represent 100 percent of the U.S. commercial pistachio production.

California comprises 99 percent of the total, with over 312,000 acres planted throughout 22 counties. Pistachios contribute $1.6 billion to the California economy.

As winters get warmer and summers drier, more and more growers are moving to Pistachios. In addition to their ability to survive droughts and adapt to saltier water is contributing to the move from Almond trees to Pistachio trees.

Pistachios certainly have different water requirements than other nut trees. In this Irrigation Training Series episode, Connor Cunningham will step through a scheduling strategy to help maximize yields in the field.

During this webinar you will learn:
  • Common pistachio production practices
  • New research on water-saving strategies
  • How to use data to manage irrigation more efficiently

Selecting The Best Emission Device For The Job

Selecting The Best Emission Device For The Job

Microirrigation systems include several types of emission devices. Soil type, the landscape’s topography, plant type, and associated water requirements all impact the emission device used.

In addition, filter requirement, frost protection, and grower./landscaper preferences also make a difference. With so many choices, what is the best way to determine the best emission device for a specific job?

This week, Andy Belingheri, National Sales Manager for Jain Irrigation, is going to step us through a process to determine how to select the best emission device for the job.

During this webinar, you will learn the following:
  • Point Source vs. In-line emitters – definition of each and when to use one or the other
  • What is turbulent flow vs. pressure compensating emitters, and why it matters
  • How flow rates are measured in GPH – why that matters and how to know which flow is right
  • Other emission devices (spray stakes, manifolds, bubblers)
  • Maintenance requirements for each
  • Filtrations and Pressure requirements
