The Humanity of Hajj; Erasing Racism as a Muslim Community - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- This eid of sacrifice is the eid related to the life of Prophet Ibrāhīm and his son Ismā‘īl; and it is linked to the annual ḥajj ceremony. So let us look at the main message of hajj and eidul adhaa - Islam is a world religion. Yes, it started in Arabia through an Arab prophet but its message, from day one, has been universal, for all people - The Prophet sent emissaries to invite the neighbouring nations towards Islam: from Minor Asia and Persia, to Yemen and Ethiopia - The Qur’ãn clearly says in 49:13 that there is no preference in Islam for race, color or language - This concept of equality of believers in the eyes of Allāh was not left by the Prophet at the level of theory only.  - This is physically re-enforced in daily jamã‘at prayer where there are no reserved seats. It is re-enforced more broadly in weekly Friday congregations - However, the most visible and powerful manifestation of this equality is in hajj where people gather from all over the world - A narration of the Prophet in the last khutba after the hajj - May Allãh give us the courage to continue spreading this message in our words and interaction with others. - A haji is expected to come back from hajj with a colour-blind view towards other Muslims. - Iḥrãm: it is not actually a dress of any nation in the world – this physically removes all distinctions from pilgrims. - Read what Malcom X says in his autobiography about his transformation in hajj from an anti-white person to a color-blind Muslim - It was relevant at that time and it is also relevant during our time not only in the Western societies  – Especially in the USA and how police treat the Afro-Americans, but also among the Muslim and Shi‘a communities.  - The young generation must take the bull by the horns and remove the colonial mentality of treating others as inferior, even if it means going against the older generations. - The first priority in preparing the community for the zuhūr of the Imam al-Mahdi (aj) is to get rid of this jāhiliyyah mentality of racism by putting someone down just because of his ethnicity - You are a Shi‘a Muslim first before you are an Iraqi or Irani or Afghani or Punjabi or Muhajir or Indian or Gujarati or Kathchi or Canadian or American.  MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Wiladat/Eid-ul-Adha1441_Rizvi_073120.mp3 Eid ul Adha 1441 Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date: July 31st, 2020 Youtube: https://youtube.com/islamicentre Podcasts: https://anchor.fm/islamicentre Facebook: https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org Website: https://islamicentre.org https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Abbas: Going Beyond the Call of Duty; The Spirit of Volunteerism - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Despite the COVID-19 crisis, we cannot forget our faith, our values and our histories. We cannot forget the personalities who were role-models for us.  - We should be thankful to Allãh for giving us humans the intelligence to create and master the technology that despite the lockdown, we can still remotely connect to one another - ‘Abbās for us is not just an example of a good Muslim who was obedient to Allãh, Rasūl and the Imām of his time – he is the best example of those who go beyond the call of duty; ‘Abbās – was the embodiment of sacrifice - On the eve of ‘Āshūrah, Imam Ḥusayn (a) gathered his companions and family members and praised them. Why did he praise them using the words he did? - The greatness of ‘Abbās, the Banū Hāshim and the companions is not that they fulfilled their religious duty – they went beyond the call of duty  - These acts of sacrifice indicate that while the martyrs lost their lives, they were able to pass on the spirit of humanity. And that is one dimension of the statement of ‘Abbās’ beloved sister, Zaynab, when she was asked by Ibn Ziyād about her view of what happened in Karbala - The examples of volunteerism can also be seen in the present situation that the world is facing regarding coronavirus - Some mu’mineen asked the opinion of the Grand Ayatullah Sistani about the work and sacrifice of the medical professionals and the volunteers - Discussing and reviewing the wise words of Ayatullah Sistani on this topic - Saluting those volunteers who put themselves into danger of contracting the virus for the sake of others - Narrating sayings from the 4th Imam regarding his uncle Abbas, and his exemplary qualities MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Wiladat/WiladatHAbbas_Rizvi_2020-03-28_17-27-24.mp3 Wiladat of Hazrat Abbas  Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date: March 28th, 2020 Youtube: https://youtube.com/islamicentre Podcasts: https://anchor.fm/islamicentre Facebook: https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org Website: https://islamicentre.org https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

New Delhi Riot Violence; Coronavirus & the Media - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- The capital of the world’s largest democracy is going through turmoil.  - BJP, the ruling party, was again defeated in the recent election in Delhi and expressed its anger by targeting the peaceful people who were protesting against the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) - A leader of BJP publicly challenged the police to remove the protesters from Shaheen Bagh in three days otherwise they will do it themselves.  - The police just listened and didn’t do anything to fight the hate speech. - Within hours, Hindu mobs started gathering in some Muslim area of Delhi, with police just standing by and watching, and in many cases joining the mobs in destroying cars and motorbikes, shops and businesses, and even entered the masājid and burned the Qur’an and whatever they could burn. - This has resulted in almost 40 deaths and nearly 200 injured. - UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, expressed “great concern” over the CAA and targeting of the peaceful protestors - Some stories of Hindu neighbours coming to the rescue of Muslims have been encouraging – and shows that the mobs were mobilized from outside the area by the fundamentalist Hindu group - I urge you to send a message for your local MP to ask the Canadian government to make a stand on protecting the minorities in India and maintaining its secular democracy. - ‘Ali (a.s.), in his epistle, wrote to Mālik Ashtar on the topic of protecting the weak in society - I had said earlier that we should pray for all those who are affected by the Coronavirus because a virus doesn’t differentiate between a Muslim/non-Muslim… - A report in the Persian version of the BBC that the ‘ulamā’ in Iran are hindering the efforts of the health officials in preventing the spread of the virus. - It's really surprising how some media people always look for an opportunity to put down the ‘ulamā’ on false basis. - On Monday night’s mehfil, I specifically mentioned that the seminary in Qum has cancelled all classes and some senior ‘ulamā’ have even stopped going to masjid, urging people to listen to the instructions of the health officials. Even the Friday prayers in about 23 major cities have been cancelled! - The religious rulings are clear: if a person has the virus, then he or she should not attend religious gatherings. If such a person knowingly does that, then he/she is responsible in the eyes of Allāh as well as liable for spreading that virus to others. - The ‘ulamā’ talk about doing du‘as, reciting ḥadīth kisā’ and ziyārat ‘Ashūra’ in your homes BUT they always say that follow the instructions of the health officials and also du‘ā. - Approaching the month of Rajab, the beginning of the 'spiritual season' - In Islam, “space” and “time” are not all equal in importance: some are more sacred than others - Examples of areas that would be considered more sacred, and times that are more important than others - Similarly, not all months are the same. Discussing 4 months of importance - The spiritual state of the heart isn't always consistent either - Narration of Imam Ali discussing this concept - Various narrations regarding the importance of Rajab - The powerful tool of fasting to refocus our energy and purpose of life - The recommended days to fast, and its various benefits MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Fridays/FridayKhutba_Rizvi_2020-02-21_13-12-14.mp3 Friday Juma Khutba Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date: February 21st, 2020 Youtube: https://youtube.com/islamicentre Podcasts: https://anchor.fm/islamicentre Facebook: https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org Website: https://islamicentre.org https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Nuclear or Extended Family?; Balancing Family Relationships - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Bibi Fāṭimatu ’z-Zahrā’ is the nucleus the Ahl-e Kisā’, the five holy figures in Islam; she is directly linked to all other members of Ahl-e Kisā’: she is daughter of the Prophet, wife of the Imam, and mother of Ḥasan and Ḥusayn. - Keeping that in mind, this lecture covers the topic of family life - In my various discussions on Family Life in Islam, we have looked at the two famous family models: Extended Family (or Joint Family System) and Nuclear Family (Separate Family System). Islam prefers a Semi-Attached Family System, i.e., a nuclear family model with emphasis on ṣilatu ’r-raḥam.  - “Ṣilatu ’r-Raḥim” is the key here. What does it mean? It means making close one’s ties of relationship, i.e., maintaining the ties of relationship with kindness. - David Brooks, a prominent American intellectual, discusses the history of family system of the modern America in a recent article: “The Nuclear Family Was A Mistake.” - Islam promotes a middle path: the nuclear family model with a strong emphasis on ṣilatu ’r-raḥim: that is the key because many times self-centeredness (or “hyper-individualism”) creeps in and that leads to the delinking of the nuclear family with those who are related to them. - “Delinking” here means qaṭu ’r-rahim, cutting off the ties of relationship. - The Sūrah an-Nūr (24:61) gives a good indication of what a nuclear family with a strong sense of ṣilatu ’r-raḥm should look like - Ḥadīth-e Kisā’ as an Example of Ṣilatu ’r-Raḥim - When we recite ḥadīth-e kisā’ in our mehfil and marriages, it is not only for thawāb, we are being constantly reminded of the ṣilatu ’r-raḥim - Their houses were separate, but their hearts were united - Before this question and answer between angels and Adam, there is a ḥadīth qudsi MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Wiladat/WiladatBibiFatema_Rizvi_2020-02-14_21-18-55.mp3 Wiladat Bibi Fatima (a.s.) What is Love?; Sustaining a Marriage; Appropriate Behavior - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Family Day holidy in the province of Ontario, Canada - What is the basis of a family in Islam? - Marriages are sustained by love between a couple. What is 'love' and how does it play a role? - Quoting an article by a neurology professor regarding the concept of 'falling in love' - The Islamic perspective, the main criteria for marriage consists of 2 items - What does Islam say regarding love in a marriage? - Differentiating between internal feelings of love, and it's outward expression; and the sharia view on both aspects - Various verses of the Qur'an talking about a 'spiritual disease', regarding inappropriate behaviour stemming from harmful internal thoughts - In the days of the #MeToo movement, it should be easier to understand the emphasis that Islam has in maintaining the boundaries of decency between opposite genders. - Islam has talked about these issues clearly; it doesn’t wait until a high-profile case like that of Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein, reaches to the court. - Formal, business-type, interaction between opposite genders with aura of decency is accepted but any kind of social interaction is not allowed. - The prohibition in Islam starts from physical contact: shaking hands. The message is simple: no touching. - Touching upon Qur'anic verses mentioning the plots of the Shaitan to make us stray - Islamic emphasis upon controlling your eyes and gaze MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Fridays/FridayKhutba_Rizvi_2020-02-14_13-13-32.mp3 Friday Juma Khutba Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date: February 14th, 2020 Youtube: https://youtube.com/islamicentre Podcasts: https://anchor.fm/islamicentre Facebook: https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org Website: https://islamicentre.org https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Fighting Coronavirus; Hygiene in Islam & History - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- The global chaotic reaction to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, originating in China - These are the moments where we need to look at the Islamic guidance about food and drink, and also the simple rules governing the hygiene in our daily lives - In the last two decades, many schools have instituted the policy where the students are asked to wash their had four to five times a day. This has had an impact in deducing absenteeism. Discussing a study in the US reflecting this - For a Muslim, even if he is not consciously washing his hands, just the act of doing wudhu forces him to wash the hands three to five times a day. We take this for granted and now we see that the world is moving in that direction! - Narrating a hadith related to this issue - William Durant, author of 'The story of civilization' writes: “Cleanliness, in the Middle Ages, was not next to godliness. Early Christianity had denounced the Roman baths as wells of perversion and promiscuity, and its general disapproval of the body had put no premium on hygiene.”  - Describing the Ottoman civilization, the same historian writes, “…in Islam cleanliness was really next to godliness.” - This is only the physical aspect. The spiritual dimensions can be seen when you look at the recommended du‘as associated with different stages of wudhu. - These du‘as prepare us to think about the day of judgement - Some disasters are natural while others are because of our actions. - Sura Rum, verse 41 related to this issue - Besides the physical precautions that we have to take to protect ourselves, individually and collectively, we should also seek the path of prayer so that Allāh may keep us away from such calamities. - The former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid mentality towards Shī‘ism is praiseworthy. In responding to some of his detractors who accused him of being a Shī‘a, Wahid pointed to the prevailing love for Ahlul Bayt among the Sunnis of Indonesia, in particular, the supplication that read: “li khamsatun utfi biha ḥarra ’l-wabã al-ḥãṭimah, al-Muṣtafa wa ’l-Murṭaḍa wa ibnãhumã wa ’l-Fãṭimah.” - "I have five persons through whom I extinguish the heat of crushing disease: the Prophet, ‘Ali, Hasan, Husayn & Fatimah." The Innovations of Salafi Islam; Protecting the Honor of Ali - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Touching upon the Wahhabi accusation of Shi'as exaggerating the status of ‘Ali and Fāṭima, while, on the other hand, we see them degrading their status. And they project themselves as those who represent the original Islam, Salafis. - Example of the name of Ali, how it was a common practice for the Ahle Sunnah to use radhi ullahu anhu for companions, but karam ullahu wajhu for Ali, reflecting his special status, that he never worshipped idols - Today, Salafis openly discourage this and 'a.s.' for Ali, insisting on equal treatment of all sahabah, despite Allah's statement in 32:18 - Sharing proofs from Sunni historians from the early days to the 10th century, using this title for Ali - Discussing various Qur'anic verses supporting the qualities of a mu'min, which Ali fit - Similar examples of 'a.s.' used in print editions of Sahih Bukhari for the first 4 Imams, Al-Bukhari mentioning 'a.s.' 26 times when referring to Bibi Fatima - Call for all Muslims to visit the original, true Islam, and give the honor and respect that is due to the Ahlul Bayt MP3: https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Fridays/FridayKhutba_Rizvi_2020-01-31_13-03-10.mp3 Youtube: https://youtu.be/gHXahr2r1kc Friday Juma Khutba Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date: January 31, 2020 https://youtube.com/islamicentre https://anchor.fm/islamicentre https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org https://islamicentre.org https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

The Effects of Globalization on Shi'a Traditions, Calendar, & Culture - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Shia's express their love for the Ahlul Bayt through observing historical events related to their lives, including Wiladat and Wafat events - In previous days, the world wasnt as connected as today; means of communication were not as easily available - During those days, each community interacted with those in their own geographical area and ethno-cultural circles. They were generally taught by previous generations, passing down cultures, traditions, religion, practices, etc - Not all historical sources are unanimous in various cases - When Shia communities gradually were established in different parts of the Muslim world, the ulema or elders of those communities preferred one view over the other, which was engrained in generations - Since there was no interconnection among the communities, different dates of religious occasions were not an issue except in scholarly discussions - Recent migration of the Shi‘as to Europe and North America has given rise to a “new problem”: different communities started observing religious occasions according to their cultural backgrounds - There is a need for tolerance in this diversity. Being Persian or Arab, or knowing Arabic, aren't necessarily the criterion. These are historical issues - Differing dates of 2nd Imam wafat, 4th Imam wiladat, 4th Imam wafat, 6th Imam wafat, 8th Imam wafat, Bibi Zaynab wafat - Bibi Fatimas wafat is observed on two dates, due to a unique source of difference that is covered in the lecture - Celebration vs Commemoration, when a wafat and wiladat date coincide - What do you do when there is a conflict between a personal celebration and wafat/Muharram? - Not all events were celebrated or commemorated the way they are observed now Youtube: https://youtu.be/kARvKaS-6MA  MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Thursdays/ThursdayNight_Rizvi_2018-03-29_21-50-28.mp3   Thursday Night Majlis Recited  By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi  Date: March 29th, 2018   www.facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org  www.twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi  www.islamicentre.org

Rohingya Genocide in Myanmar; Aung San Suu's Inaction in Office - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- 17 judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) voted unanimously to order Myanmar to take “all measures within its power” to prevent genocide of Rohingya Muslims. - ICJ has asked Myanmar to report back within four months on how it was implementing the ruling. - Representing the Myanmar government at the court was Aung San Suu Kyi who defended her government and described the violence as an “internal armed conflict” triggered by Rohingya militant attacks on government security posts. She argued that there was no mass murder, rape or arson. - When Aung San Suu opposed the oppressive military of Myanmar, she was respected by the whole world and became an icon of peace and was also awarded honorary citizenship of Canada. But in power, she looked away when the Muslim Rohingya minority was brutally oppressed the Buddhist majority. - A point of reflection is looking at who took up the cause. It was a small Muslim country in Africa, The Gambia. - Gambian Justice Minister, Abubacarr Tambadou, visited the refugee camp of Rohingya Muslims in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, and listened to survivors’ stories. - He said, “the stench of genocide” began drifting across the border into Bangladesh from Myanmar. “I realized how much more serious it was than the flashes we’d seen on television screens.” “Military and civilians would organize systematic attacks against Rohingya, burn down houses, snatch babies from their mothers’ arms and throw them alive into burning fires, round up and execute men; girls were gang-raped and put through all types of sexual violence.”  - A lesson that we can learn from Aung San Suu is that we should always try to ensure that our end is on the right path. - There is a famous statement in the du‘a ghayr ma’thura: O Allãh, make the end of our affairs to be good. - A person might be good in the first stage or the second stage of the life but then towards the end, he deviates.  - The example of Zubayr bin Awwam, cousin of the Prophet and Ali. His actions during the event of the door against Fatima Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet. Also his friend Talha, who pledged allegiance to Ali, but then was among the first to rebel against him   MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Fridays/Fridaykhutba_Rizvi_2020-01-24_12-58-19.mp3   Youtube: https://youtu.be/eDtyGvC17x4   Friday Juma Khutba  Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi  Date: January 24th, 2020   https://youtube.com/islamicentre  https://anchor.fm/islamicentre  https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org  https://islamicentre.org   https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi  https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi  https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Arrogance of Tyrants; Trump's Isolation on the World Stage - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Recent events in the Middle East, relates back to an even during the time of the 6th Imam, and an interaction with Mansur, the ruler of the time. Narrating the story of the fly, and a related ayat of Qur'an from Sura Hajj - Touching upon the threat by President Donald Trump against Iran, targetting 52 sites, some of cultural heritage - His words in the following days, pleading for other nations and organizations for help, shows how isolated he is on the world stage, with his views - Relating this back to the story with Mansur - The problem of arrogance is a serious spiritual problem - Arrogance in the first sin of human history, when Satan refused to do Sajdah to Adam - Arrogance and pride of accomplishments are two different things, and it's important to avoid one turning into the other - Jamat salat (congregational prayers) is emphasized in Islam to teach the lesson of humility, and address arrogance. - Related verses from Dua Makarimul Akhlaq MP3: https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Fridays/FridayKhutba_Rizvi_2020-01-10_13-01-23.mp3 Youtube: https://youtu.be/4qGJpEO4i4E Friday Juma Khutba Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date: January 10th, 2019 https://youtube.com/islamicentre https://anchor.fm/islamicentre https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org https://islamicentre.org https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Violence in Modern Muslim History; Shi'a Fighters Against ISIS - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Remembering the shuhadā’ of Iraq who protected the shrines of Ahlul Bayt and also remembering those who died in the Tehran air disaster flight to Kiev on their ziyarat trip to those shrines  - Discussing violence in Modern Muslim History  - Finding the roots causing this violence  - Muslims had theological disagreements since the early days, however they were confined to discussion, debate, and literature  - The Khawarij was the first group who used violence for their ideals  - They had rebelled against Imam ‘Ali (a). ‘Ali had warned them that as long as your opposition is in words, I will tolerate you but the day you take up arms against the ordinary Muslims and harm them, I will confront you militarily.  - Much later, this mentality re-emerged in form of Salafi-Wahhabi ideology which is advocated by Saudi Arabia. The kingdom is based on that ideology.   - When Saudis captured the holy cities in 1920s, they destroyed the shrines of the family and companions of the Prophet in Medina.   - The example of the Ṭālibān – trained by Americans and financed by Saudis, Qataris & Imaratis against the Soviet. When they took over Afghanistan, they did the same: destruction of religious symbols and killing of other Muslims, especially the Shi‘as.   - And more recently in the areas of Syria and Iraq briefly controlled by ISIS, we saw the same pattern: destroying the shrines of the prophets and the companions of the Prophet and beheading of non-Muslims and Muslims alike. - The majority of Muslims who go for Hajj visit Medina to pay respects to the Prophet's grave and those of his family/companions  - Salafi-Wahhabis consider these signs of respect as worship, and exhibit extreme hatred for these acts and the people who perform them - All these events have led to present day situations - As a Shi‘a Muslim community appreciate anyone who protects our shrines, who arranges tour groups to facilitate the visitations, and also those make the effort to visit the shrines.  - We salute and pray for those fighters from the Mediterranean coast to Pakistan who gave their lives in protecting the shrine of Bibi Zaynab near Damascus by pushing back the extremist forces. If it wasn’t for them, the shrine of Bibi Zaynab would have be destroyed.  - We salute and pray for those who gave their lives in fighting against the ISIS in Iraq. If it had not been for the courage and sacrifice of the Muslim fighters, ISIS had full intention of destroying the shrine in Samarra, in Kazimayn, in Karbala and in Najaf.  -  We pray for Allãh’s special blessings upon those travellers who lost their lives in the recent air disaster outside Tehran. Among them were some who had gone for ziyārat of the shrines of our Imams - Why do we pray for those who defended the shrines of Ahlul Bayt in Syria and Iraq?   - If it hadn’t been for their courage and sacrifice, the ISIS would have turned those shrine sites into the same sad situation as what we see today at the graveyard of Jannatul Baqī‘ in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The False Confidence of Tyrants; Anger in Relationships - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Touching upon the Bibi Zainab in honor of her recent wiladat  - In her famous khuṭba, in the darbar of Yazīd, she mentioned three verses from the Qur’ān.  - In the first one she reminds Yazīd not to gloat over his apparent victory  - Narrating a related verse from the Qur'an - Yazīd died and most Muslims consider him to be disgrace to Islam and humanity. He ruled a vast empire, but the people didn’t even honour him with a decent resting place.  - On the other hand, the name of Zaynab of shines in history with glory; and her shrine in the outskirts of Damascus –the capital of Yazīd– has a beautiful shrine which is visited by millions.  - The ideological children of the Umayyids, known as extremist Salafis, have opened their shops in different parts of the world with different names. Al-Qaida, ISIS, Taliban, etc  - ISIS tried to destroy the shrine of Lady Zaynab and also tried to get closer to shrine of the Imams in Samarra, Iraq – but they were defeated at the hands of the Shi‘a fighters of various nationalities.  - The USA – thousands of miles away from Iraq – is asking those who are close to Iraq to “not interfere” although these nations have centuries old cultural, economic and religious ties. And then it allows itself to attack with impunity, thus violating Iraqi sovereignty! This is the height of arrogance.  - Some people have a tradition of making new year’s resolution for themselves. By keeping the wilādat week of Lady Zaynab, let us make a pledge of looking at our own family lives and identify what are the points of anger and aggression.  - What are the triggers that causes a husband or a wife to express rage and angry outbursts?  - Narrating Qur'anic verses related to this topic   MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Fridays/FridayKhutba_Rizvi_2020-01-03_12-55-50.mp3   Youtube: https://youtu.be/4s-s_Xk5T2E   Friday Juma Khutba  Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi  Date: January 3rd, 2020   https://youtube.com/islamicentre  https://anchor.fm/islamicentre  https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org  https://islamicentre.org   https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi  https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi  https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Balancing Conformity & Identity; Distinguishing Culture & Religion - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Respecting other faiths while maintaining our identity  - Islam teaches us to respect other faiths and to recognize social pluralism, more so when it comes to the people of the Book: the Jewish and the Christian community.  - At the same time, Islam teaches us to maintain our identity and not to dilute our values or our identity. This applies more when it comes to religious rituals and practices.  - Quoting Sura Kafirun  - Migration and hijrah come with the challenges of integration. On the level of ‘aqidah and religious rituals, we should not mix and match things – we should maintain our religious identity  - In cultural issues –for example, clothing and food– there is room for adapting the other ways as long as it does not conflict with the laws of Islam.  - The Qur’an has described the story of Bani Isra’il in many places and in detail. These stories are not just story-telling; they are an example for us to learn lessons.  - The additional example of the Prophet and his regard for Judaism and Christianity - Discussing current issues related to this topic, especially in the context of Western society   Youtube: https://youtu.be/4eLeRx3u6S4   MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Thursdays/ThursdayNight_Rizvi_2019-12-26_19-13-36.mp3   Thursday Night Majlis  Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi  Date: December 26th, 2019   https://youtube.com/islamicentre  https://anchor.fm/islamicentre  https://facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org  https://islamicentre.org   https://facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi  https://instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi  https://twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Religion-based Conflict; God's Advice to Jesus - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Touching upon the celebrations of the birthday of Jesus this week and the Orthodox Christians (Ethiopia, Coptic Church in Egypt, Greece, Ukraine and Russia) will celebrate in early January  - Narrating the first advice that Allah gave to Prophet Isa  - The moral lessons behind the 4 mentioned aspects of advice: prayer, charity, devotion to his mother, and the absence of arrogance  - It is perplexing how much people are still fighting in the name of religion, despite the numerous common values between faiths  - Most of the wars in the last hundred were based on racism or political ideology or territorial disputes, not on basis of religion.  - It is a trend to attribute all the conflicts to religions. The Atheist lobby these days is promoting this idea and claiming that all problems are because of religion so let us eliminate religion.  - The Muslims should get closer to the example of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), and the Christians should get closer to the example of Prophet Jesus (a.s.)   Youtube: https://youtu.be/8yZ2SRhszi4   MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Fridays/Fridaykhutba_Rizvi_2019-12-27_12-51-15.mp4   Friday Juma Khutba  Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi  Date: December 27th, 2019   www.youtube.com/islamicentre  https://anchor.fm/islamicentre  www.facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org  www.islamicentre.org   www.facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi  www.instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi  www.twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Female Infanticide in Today's Neo-Jahiliyyah; 'Stigma' of Daughters - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Birth of a child as a cause of joy and happiness  - However the birth of a female child was considered a bad omen in pre-Islamic jahiliyyah society, and even today in various societies  - Female infanticide is a large issue impacting all eras  - Sura at-Takwir verses 8-9 also refer to this unfortunate issue  - Some Arabs would consider a baby girl as a sign of disgrace and would bury her alive  - Today, even with advancements in knowledge, civilization, and science, female infanticide is still common  - 117 million girls go 'missing' due to sex-selective abortions  - Muslim mothers-in-law become sad when the first grandchild is a girl! Doesn’t she think about herself? She was also born as a baby girl!   - Sayings of the Prophet and Imams regarding this issue  - The issue of dowry system in South Asia, where daughters are considered "an unaffordable economic burden"  - Allah's words regarding people's fears of poverty through having children  - Touching upon the issue of abortion  - The significance of the Prophet's family, and Bibi Zainab growing up surrounded by the Panjatan   Youtube: https://youtu.be/NFTToZwLIaI   MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Wiladat/WiladatBibiZaynab_Rizvi_2019-12-31_20-48-57.mp3   Wiladat of Bibi Zaynab  Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date:  December 31st, 2019   www.youtube.com/islamicentre  https://anchor.fm/islamicentre  www.facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org  www.islamicentre.org   www.facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi  www.instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi  www.twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Indian Exclusionary Citizenship; Erosion of Citizen Rights Globally - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Right wing politics in which immigrants and minorities are being marginalized is sweeping across Europe as well as India. - Modi’s BJP government passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) which will grant citizenship to six religious minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh. The communities who will be given this citizenship from these countries are Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian. - The bill is exclusionary and violates the secular ethos of the Indian constitution. Faith cannot be made a condition of citizenship - Opponents says that there are minorities among the Muslims themselves who are persecuted: Ahmadis or Shi‘as or Hazaras in Pakistan. If BJP government was really concerned about persecuted minorities in the neighbouring countries, it should have opened the door for all in that neighbourhood irrespective of their faith. - The BJP government also tried to introduce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in north-east state of Assam which has many Bengali refugees. - Locally, we need to be vigilant also. Harper’s Tory government passed Bill C-24 which gave the government the right to strip (even Canadian born individuals) who had dual citizenship of their Canadian passports if they were convicted of crimes of terrorism, treason or espionage against Canada. - Later the Liberal government repealed parts of Bill C-24 related to terrorism-related crimes, ensuring that they can keep their Canadian passport. Treat them as Canadian and if they are guilty, then punish them according to Canadian laws without deporting them to their parents’ homeland! - Some Hindu fundamentals propagate the myth that the Muslims who are originally Indians, their ancestors were converted by the Muslim rulers by force. This is the same tune which was played by the European missionaries and scholars about the spread of Islam. - Muslims ruled India for about 800 years, but there never was a Muslim majority in that country. The numbers themselves show that force was not part of the spread of Islam in that region. Qamar dar Aqrab & Friday the 13th; Astrology & Social Media in Marriage - Maulana Syed Rizvi
- The 'phenomenon' of Friday the 13th, and the associated 'bad luck' - Since wedding season is around the corner, it is a good time to talk about a similar concept: Qamar dar Aqrab - It is makruh to have a wedding on this day - However it is not that it will bring bad luck upon the marriage; rather it means that the amount of thawab will not be at full potential. There is a difference between the two concepts - Similar the concepts of travelling during Ramadhan being makruh, or travelling on Friday before Juma - Getting married on this day is still ok, simply make niyyat for some sadqa as a precaution - The ahadith on qamar dar aqrab are not strong, however it is still mentioned as a precaution - Other days besides Qamar dar Aqrab which are considered by society as 'bad luck', they have weak sources in ahadith - The troubling observations that people will try to find appropriate days to hold wedding events, but then they hold haram activities during these events anyway - Touching upon the trend nowadays to post everything on social media; including haram wedding activities, or gatherings without the consent of people in the video Youtube: https://youtu.be/1ut0H8wND20 MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Fridays/FridayKhutba_Rizvi_2019-12-13_12-51-58.mp3 Friday Juma Khutba Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date: December 13th, 2019 www.youtube.com/islamicentre https://anchor.fm/islamicentre www.facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org www.islamicentre.org www.facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi www.instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi www.twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

- Celebration of the founder of our faith, the father of Fāṭimah, the grandfather of Ḥasanayn, the brother of ‘Ali, the best of all the prophets and that is why Almighty Allãh decided to send him as the last one! - Position of the Prophet in this world - Human beings are placed at the top of the pyramid of creation - What is the status of angels? - The superiority of man over angels as demonstrated during the creation of Adam - The various great prophets, leading up to Muhammad - When it came to honouring the Last Prophet, Allãh does something different, something that you all are familiar with but may not realize its significance; and that is known as ṣalawāt. - The origin of the word salawat - God's command of performing salawat, and the uniqueness of this command - What does salawat mean? - Is salawat wajib or mustahab in your salat? - How is salawat recited? - The 6th Imam Jafar as-Sadiq's statement regarding the benefits of salawat https://youtu.be/Ubwobfuyetg MP3:  https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/Jaffari/Wiladat/MiladunNabi_Rizvi_2019-11-14_20-55-33.mp3 Milad un-Nabi 1441 Recited By: Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi Date: November 14th, 2019 www.youtube.com/islamicentre https://anchor.fm/islamicentre www.facebook.com/IslamiCentre.org www.islamicentre.org www.facebook.com/sayyidmrizvi www.instagram.com/sayyidmrizvi www.twitter.com/sayyidmrizvi

Civil Strife in Iraq; Voice of Ay. Sistani; Corruption in Government - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Summarizing a visit to Iraq, and the turmoil taking place there - All 3 capitals of Shi'a power are seeing unrest: Beirut, Baghdad, Tehran - THis is not a coincidence, but it cannot entirely be attributed to foreign instigation - The problem of corruption, unemployment and lack of efficient and regular services is a reality which cannot be denied. Saddam was removed 15 years ago! - The situation in Iraq has reached to a precarious point where the Grand Ayatullah Sayyid ‘Ali Sistani again made a stand. He did not ask the protesters stop their protests, rather he emphasized that they should do it in a peaceful manner. - As soon as this message was read out, the Prime Minister handed in his resignation to the cabinet; and the parliament is in the process of installing a new cabinet. - Corruption is a global issue. In the West, it is subtle and does not directly impact upon the ordinary citizens; whereas in the East it is more obvious. - The politicians of Iraq should learn from ‘Ali, the Imam whose is buried in Najaf. In three different situations, Imam ‘Ali talks about the purpose of a government. In the view of Imam ‘Ali, government is not an aim but a means of implementing a just rule. Babri Masjid Verdict in India; Character of the Prophet - Maulana Syed Muhammad Rizvi
- Discussing the issue in India regarding the Babri Masjid controversy - India was known for its secular political system but the present BJP government is catering to the right wing Hindu lobby, RSS - They promised to get the Ram temple built on the site of Babri Masjid which was demolished by the Hindu mobs in 1992 - The five-judge constitution bench of the top court gave a verdict on Saturday that a Ram temple would be built at the 2.77-acre piece of land in Ayodhya and ordered the government to give Muslims an alternative five-acre plot in a prominent place in the ancient city in Uttar Pradesh. - The Supreme Court verdict declared that the installation of idols in the mosque was illegal, the demolition in 1992 was illegal, and that there was no conclusive evidence that the structure under the masjid was a Hindu temple - Discussing various aspects, viewpoints, and issues with the overall ruling - Commemmorating the recent day of Milad un-Nabi - Sura al-Qalam describes the character of the Prophet in 4 verses. Celebrate or Mourn on Ashura?; The Death of Umar ibn Sa'd; Joy & Grief in Islam - Maulana Syed Rizvi
- After the ‘azã and grieve on Sayyidush Shuhadã’ during Muḥarram and Ṣafar, Eid-e Zahrã’ is like an annual closure to the ‘azã’. - This is the day when ‘Umar ibn Sa‘d, the commander-in-chief of the Yazidi forces was killed by the forces of Mukhtãr bin ‘Ubaydullãh ath-Thaqafi in Iraq in 66 AH. - Discussing the basis of the emotions of sadness and joy - Shi'ism, and its basis upon the concept of love for the Ahlul Bayt - How does this love manifest in our life? Especially in regards to celebration and sorrow - Sadness and happiness are natural feelings that Allãh has created within us. - Based on these natural feelings, we grieve and mourn the tragedy of Karbala; and then rejoice the day which brought happiness to Imam Sajjad - Should Āshūrā’ be a day of celebrating or a day of mourning? - Some people say that since the martyrdom of Imam Husayn was a victory for his cause - This question is not a new one. People have thought and discussed this issue in the past also. Shahīd Murtaza Mutahhari had discussed this issue in detail more than 50 years ago. - He has explained the happiness and grief on martyrdom from two difference perspective - A famous Shī‘a scholar Ibn Ta’us (d. 1266 AD) who lived 7 centuries ago had also raised this question of celebrating or grieving on the tragedy of Karbala, in the preface  of al-Luhūf - Hubb & Bughdh – Love & Hatred for the sake of truth - With love for Allãh, Rasūl and Ahlul Bayt, and with heighten emotions of ‘azā, a follower of Imam Husayn cannot have a soft corner for the tyrants of those days or of our own time. - Qur'anic ayaat supporting this line of thinking - The concept of tawalla & tabarra is based on love - The title of “sayyidu ’sh-shuhadā’” was first used for Hamza but then it was transferred to Imam Husayn "Within secular society, imagine trying to positively talk about Hitler. Will it be acceptable? Or even try to diminish or dilute his actions. It will literally become a criminal case. For us, when we talk about Yazid, Ibn Ziyad, Umar ibn Sa'ad, Hurmala, & others; they are our Hitler.
