What exactly is the taper and why is it crucial for runners?

What exactly is the taper and why is it crucial for runners?

The taper is a period of reduced training volume and intensity leading up to a race. It typically occurs in the final two to three weeks before the event. The purpose of the taper is to allow the body to recover from the accumulated fatigue of training while maintaining fitness and maximizing performance on race day.

Dr. Ricardo Costa discusses low carbohydrate, high fat (LCHF) diets for ultra runners.

Dr Ricardo Costa works in the Department of Nutrition Dietetics & Food, Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University as an academic, researchers, consultant and practitioner in Sports Dietetics and Extreme Physiology. Ricardo is a HCPC Registered Dietitian-UK, SENr Registered Sport Dietitian- UK, Accredited Practicing Dietitian-Aus and Advanced Sports Dietitian-Aus, who came to Monash University in August 2013 from Coventry University-UK. Ricardo completed his PhD at the University of Wales- UK, in neuroendocrine and nutritional immunology on the influence of sleep deprivation, cold exposure, exercise stress and nutritional intervention on selected immune responses; which examined the impact of individual and combined stressors on immune function. Additionally, the role of nutrition intervention in the effect of exercise on immune function. Ricardo's recent work has focused on the impact of multi-stressor activity on immune, thermoregulatory, and gastrointestinal health; and additionally, the impact of ultra-marathon competition on nutrition and hydration status, and implication for health. Ricardo’s research interests include the impact of exercise stress with and without other stressors on gut health, and role of nutrition under stress on gut health. Over the last few years he has established and led an international multi-centre research team investigating the impact of ultra-endurance competition on nutritional and hydration status, and on various physiological and immunological parameters; in which issue of gut health have been identified. Previously, as course director for Sports Dietetic training in the UK, he was an active consultant and supervisor in Sports Dietetics, providing and supervising sport and exercise nutritional support to a wide range of sports at recreational, amateur, and elite (Olympic athletes) level. Ricardo contacted me in regards to a research paper that was just published, in collaboration with the AIS, assessing the impact of the ketogenic low carb high fat diet on the gut health of elite endurance/ultra endurance athletes. Our results were a bit concerning, in that even a short term LCHF diet was sufficient to seriously disturb gut markers, including increased bacterial endotoxin translocation into the blood stream. Ricardo discusses this research.

Reframing 'failure' in training and racing.

Reframing 'failure' in training and racing.

The ability to reframe failure is your ability to bounce back from a difficult or not planned for situation that could be deemed as a failure. Reframing means to
look at something in a different way.
Now I’m not talking about seeing failure as a success per se, this is not about ‘participation medals’ and ‘everyone’s a winner’ mentality. I’m talking about
looking for the positives in a situation that you initially feel is a failure.

Examples would be: not hitting your time or pace target in a race or training run, getting injured, not getting into the race
you had your heart set on. To be honest the list is potentially endless and I have experienced them all. The thing to remember is these feelings don’t last
forever and you can come back from this and become a better runner and perhaps person in the process.

Shorty episode: Mastering your menstrual cycle for female athletes.

Hello and welcome back to the podcast, I am stoked you have joined me again, just for a shorty episode this time! Now, I know this episode is about periods, but I relay hope the men out there listen too. It’s about time that talking about periods was no longer taboo. It’s so interesting isn’t it? A woman’s period Is essential for the continuation of the species and yet we won’t talk about it!! It’s absolutely crazy! Why is it such a scary topic?? And I’m as guilty as anyone, up until a few years ago, I would have been too embarrassed to bring it up in polite (or otherwise!) conversation. The person who changed my outlook on this was my daughter. She laughed at me being embarrassed about it and said young women openly discussed it around males. Which I think is awesome!
If you enjoy the pod, I would greatly appreciate it if you could subscribe, rate and review. I work hard to put this content out on a weekly basis, so would love to hear from you! I will be interviewing Erchana about her tip to toe run later this week to go out next week, so make sure you tune in for that one, it’ll be good! Also, don’t forget to support those businesses that support the podcast, Health and High Performance, who are in Mont Albert in Melbourne and will help you with all your running needs and niggles, and Peak Chocolate, delicious chocolate that is good for you! Use the code ISOBELROSS for 15% off at checkout.
Thanks for listening to this episode, I love your support. Till next time!

Meghan Canfield talks accepting getting older in ultra racing

Hi and welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast. My name is Isobel Ross and I am the coach at Peak Endurance Coaching. Episode 187 is an interview with Meghan canfield.  We last spoke in episode 58, where we spoke about how she has been so successful in ultra running for so long, well into her 50s. And then she messaged me recently because I posted about wanting peoples lessons they learnt from 2022. She sent me a copy of her article that she had recently written. I will post this article with my social media posts when putting out this pod. What we talk about is the effects of getting older on running, the effects of menopause and why it should be ok to talk about both of these things! We should not be embarrassed or ashamed of getting older and potentially slower. It’s a fact of life that will happen to everyone. Thank you so much for supporting my podcast! Rating, reviewing and sharing helps more people find the podcast and grows the audience. Which all helps when I’m contacting people to be interviewed!! You can also go my YouTube channel to see the video recordings of the podcast. Please remember to support those people that support the podcast: Health and high performance https://www.healthhp.com.au/  who will help you with all your running injury and niggle needs. Coast to Kosci 2022

Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Thank you for joining me today! Episode 183 is all about my coast to kosci adventure!
Coast to kosci is a tough race in anyone’s language. And I always knew it would be, but I don’t think you really fully appreciate how tough it is until you do it. I know I certainly didn’t. In this podcast, Ron and I have a chat before the race, then a group chat with the whole crew after the race. It’s all a bit of fun, so I hope you enjoy it!
I love it when people tell me how much they love the podcast! I would love it even more if they went onto Apple Podcasts and gave the show 5 stars and wrote a short review. In that way, they are helping the podcast grow, and don’t you want to help a runner out!!?? I don’t get paid to do this but knowing that it means something to YOU the listener makes me keep plugging away at it. Also, reviews tell Apple podcasts that people are listening and that they should show it to other listeners. In this way, the podcast grows. I just saw the podcast is doing really well in Lebanon. Thank you to everyone from Lebanon who is listening!! The link to Apple podcasts is here.

Nigel Hill: winner of GSER 100 miler

Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Thank you for joining me today! Episode 182 is an interview with Nigel Hill. I last interviewed Nigel in 2021 when he won DU. Nigel is such a humble, unassuming guy who is also a phenomenal runner. Ron joins me to chat with Nigel about his win at the GSER 100 mile race recently, training leading up to the event, his strategy going into the race and how that panned out, and his view on the wintery weather. I think you’ll really enjoy this one!

Stephen Redfern ran the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100-mile run.

Stephen Redfern ran the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100-mile run.

Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Thank you for joining me today! Episode 181 is an interview with Stephen Redfern. I have interviewed Stephen a few times, documenting his massive runs. This interview looks at his most massive run to date! Stephen recently returned to Australia after participating in the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100-mile race. In 1997, the spiritual teacher, athlete, and humanitarian Sri Chinmoy founded the Self-Transcendence 3100-Mile Race. The race takes place annually, with runners running a .55-mile loop (or 880metres) 5,649 times around a sports field, playground, and high school in the New York City neighbourhood of Jamaica, Queens. Runners have 52 days to complete the 3,100 miles around the half-mile block. To complete the run within the allotted time frame, participants must average 60 miles (or 96.6kms) daily. The course opens each morning at 6 a.m. and closes at midnight, alternating directions each day, with the event being the longest certified road race in the world. Stephen and I discuss how he got into this epic race, what his goal was, how his race derailed and how he fought back to keep running. An unbelievable tale of persistence, resilience and ultimate self-triumph.
Do you love the pod? I assume you do seeing as you are here with me today! Did you know that it is super easy to go onto Apple Podcasts and give the show 5 stars (if you think it deserves it, which I hope you do!!) and write a short review? I don’t get paid to do this but knowing that it means something to YOU makes me keep plugging away at it. Scott Beams; the nicest guy in ultrarunning!

Scott Beams; the nicest guy in ultrarunning!

Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Episode 180 is an episode where Ron and I chat with one of Scott Beams. Ron and I met Scott when I asked for pacers for my 7 Peaks FKT. Scott stepped up to the plate and was brilliant in his pacing duties. He then helped in my fundraising run for Red Nose Day when I ran from Bourke St Mt Buller to Bourke St in the city. He has also helped many other people achieve their running goals. In this episode we discuss how he got into running, his training, nutrition and sleep schedules. Scott definitely has an unconventional approach, but it clearly works well for him! We recorded this interview when we are in Bright for the Four Peaks race. Scott is a funny and incredibly kind person as I am sure you will get from this interview.
Do you love the pod? I really hope so! If you do, did you know that it is super super easy to go onto Apple Podcasts and give the show 5 stars (if you think it deserves it, which I hope you do!!) and wrote a short review.
