Cross training options for runners.
Hello and welcome to the Peak Endurance Podcast, I’m your host Isobel Ross. A bit about me to start us off! I am well into my taper now, and my volume has decreased significantly, just as I recommend in last weeks podcast. I too find tapers hard but I know how important they are and what a difference they make to how I feel on race day. I love training so it is hard for me to do less but fresh legs, body and mind are imperative on race day. This week I have been reading Matt Fitzgerald’s book: ‘Run Like a Pro (Even If You’re Slow)’ I am absolutely loving this book; honestly anything matt Fitzgerald writes is good. I love his style and how easy to read his books are, yet full of wisdom and knowledge. I am loving it so much I emailed him to see if he would be up for an interview about it and he, of course, said yes! So I will be interviewing him on the 18th May when I will be in recovery from DU and in Iso as I await surgery for a health issue from the start of Covid. So I will have lots of free time and will no doubt love the chance for a chat! I have recently started listening to Oprah Winfrey’s podcast ‘Super Soul’ And am enjoying the variety of guests she has on. What are you reading to and listening to at the moment? Thank you so much KP Bass for your 5-star review and lovely comment: Love the new style Thank you for new style, looking forward to hearing more of them! Love your positivity & energy, keep it up 🤩Look forward to hearing all about running in the snow, overseas and at Barkley I love getting reviews and they do help more people see the podcast, so thank you so much! If you have been thinking about adding a review, go ahead and do it, it would be so kind of you! Do you have injuries or niggles ruining your enjoyment of running and hindering your performance? Running is our time to focus on our health and happiness and if this time is plagued with aches and pains, it’s no fun at all. Please let me know your thoughts on this episode; have I convinced you of the veracity of cross training?? Do you have any cross-training modalities you could recommend?? If you do, please comment in the Facebook or Instagram post associated with this episode. Speaking of, don’t forget to follow me on socials, Peak Endurance Coaching or Isobel Ross, although that is less running specific. Kirrily Dear and Mark Grima are Running Against Violence.
Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Episode 121 is an interview with Kirrily Dear from Run Against Violence, and Mark Grima, from Team One Zero Six’s. For 19 days in 2017, solo ultra marathon runner, Kirrily Dear, ran 1300km from Broken Hill to Sydney to give a voice to the often silent victims of family violence.  Family and domestic violence,  whether physical or psychological, is increasingly being recognised as the social challenge of our time. Public conversation around the issue is building; however, we often overlook the children - those who hear and see the violence, or are directly targeted. Too often, these children don’t have the chance to tell their own story.  In 2017Kirrily asked the nation to stop and listen to these young people. Many people who experience family violence bear their pain in silence.  They fear the stigma and social isolation that may result from speaking out about their experiences.  Conversations break that silence and educate the community. People who experience violence can feel stigmatised and alone. They don't reach out for help for fear of their safety and what people will say and think. Every one of us has the power to change that. By starting conversations, we rip down those social barriers. That makes it much easier for people to ask for help and to heal from their experiences. Starting 30 August 2021, groups of up to 20 people can virtually walk or run 1300km from Broken Hill to Sydney. The route retraces the real-world 2017 StepsTogether Ultramarathon. More than 3000 people across the world have participated online in the Challenge. This year it is expected to be even bigger. I hope you enjoy this episode, so it would be wonderful if you could subscribe and write a review. This helps to boost the ratings of the show and thus increase its’ audience reach. Dean Karnazes; A Runner's High.
Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Episode 115 is an interview with Dean Karnazes. Dean is a two-time New York Times bestselling author and an icon in the running world. TIME magazine named Karnazes one of the '100 Most Influential People in the World.' An internationally acclaimed endurance athlete, he is the winner of an ESPN ESPY, a three-time winner of Competitor magazine's Endurance Sports Athlete of the Year award and the recipient of the President's Council on Sports Fitness & Nutrition Lifetime Achievement award. Dean has just put out his latest book ‘A Runner’s High. Older, Wiser, Slower, Stronger.’ The description of his book goes: “In A Runner's High, Karnazes chronicles his return to the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run in his mid-fifties after first completing the race decades ago. The Western States, infamous for its rugged terrain and extreme temperatures, becomes the most demanding competition of his life, a physical and emotional reckoning and a battle to stay true to one's purpose. Confronting his age, wearying body, career path and life choices, we see Karnazes as we never have before, raw and exposed. A Runner's High is both an endorphin-fuelled page-turner and a love letter to the sport from one of its most celebrated ambassadors.” I have just read this book and I have to agree with this!
