Staying Active with Cheryl Hile

Staying Active with Cheryl Hile

In this episode, Andy sat down with Cheryl Hile. Cheryl is a has been running marathons since 2000, but in 2006 her life was changed when a nagging injury turned out to be MS. Due to physical challenges, Cheryl struggled with keeping her exercise goals alive, but she persisted and was fitted for a brace called an ankle-foot orthosis which helped her run without the fear of falling. As a result, since her diagnosis, she has completed over 60 marathons and became the first person with MS to run eight marathons on eight continents, completing them all in only 12 months!

In 2018, Cheryl founded “Run A Myelin My Shoes,” an MS support team that has now grown to over 300 teammates worldwide representing 19 countries. She founded this organization to dispel the often-misconceived notion that strenuous exercise is bad for MS, so her mission now is to encourage people with MS to keep pushing forward to the best of their abilities so they can remain active despite a disease that compromises mobility.

This weekend, on October 15, Cheryl and her Run A Myelin My Shoes team are participating in the Baltimore Marathon, and in this episode she shares how you can take part to support the cause. Check out this episode of It’s the Climb to hear the whole story.

Pouring into the Root with Griff Aldrich

Pouring into the Root with Griff Aldrich

In this episode, Andy and Jonas sat down with Griff Aldrich.

Griff is a college basketball coach, currently serving as the head coach of the Longwood Lancers in Virginia. In his first four years of leadership he has lead the team to their first ever Division I NCAA Tournament appearance, a Big South Championship, and a Big South regular season title. As a result of Griff’s influence, the Lancers have become one of the most drastic turnarounds in all of college basketball.

But perhaps what’s most impressive is these accomplishments came after a 16 year gap in his college basketball coaching career, during which time he forged a name for himself as a partner with the Vinson & Elkins law firm, as the founder of a major oil and gas company, and as a managing director and chief financial officer for a private investment firm.

Yet even while engaging in these business ventures, coaching has remained a passion, and over the years he continued to coach elite-level AAU high school basketball players, going on to found the HIS Hoops program in one of the most impoverished areas of Houston, where he poured into their roots the fundamentals of faith, academics, and basketball. As a result of Griff’s efforts, his players have gone on to play for elite college and professional teams both nationally and internationally.

Griff’s example is powerful testament of what is possible when you engage in the fundamentals of great execution, consistently pouring into the roots of worthy effort, attitude, and focus.

Getting Out There with Susan Simmons

Getting Out There with Susan Simmons

In this episode, Andy sat down with Susan Simmons.

Susan is a Canadian marathon swimmer living with MS, Multiple Sclerosis—a chronic and progressive autoimmune disease that impacts the brain’s nerve cells and spinal cord, leading to symptoms such as uncontrolled spasms, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, pain, and impaired vision, balance, and coordination, just to name a few.

Susan was diagnosed in 1995 at the age of 30 and was told to avoid exercise because doctors feared it would put her at risk of permanent nerve damage. But after ten years of rest, her condition only worsened and it became clear that if she did not do something, she would soon be in a wheelchair.

And so, in 2005, Susan shifted her focus to fitness as her final hope of managing the disease, but because MS is often a heat sensitive disease—with exercise causing attacks as the body’s temperature rises—she turned to swimming as a low-impact form of exercise that would also keep her cool.

After training for seven years, she competed in her first 10km ocean swim in Vancouver, a swim of over six miles, placing first in her division, and she has since gone on to complete in a number of open-water marathons swims—including an over 43-mile unassisted swim, which she completed in just over 31 hours!

Susan’s accomplishments are incredible, but what makes them even more remarkable is knowing what she has had to overcome in order to achieve them. She is truly an inspiration to everyone, demonstrating what’s possible when you just get out there and do it.

Staying in the Moment with Todd Carmichael

Staying in the Moment with Todd Carmichael

In this episode, Andy and Jonas sat down with Todd Carmichael. Todd is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, television host, and adventure traveler.

He is the co-founder of La Colombe, a coffee company founded on a mission to serve the best coffee, and has since gone on to use its success as a platform to influence meaningful change around the world—including long-term support for Haitian coffee farmers, advocating for National Parks, supporting communities through Feeding America, and promoting social justice, just to name a few of their philanthropic initiatives.

Todd is a regular contributor to Esquire Magazine and hosts two shows on the Travel Channel, Dangerous Grounds and Uncommon Grounds.

In 2008, Todd became the first United States citizen to complete an unassisted solo expedition across Antarctica, reaching the South Pole in a record-breaking 39 days, 7 hours, and 49 minutes. Footage from this expedition was used in an award-winning documentary on the National Geographic Channel entitled Race to the Bottom of the Earth.

Lessons Learned with Andy & Jonas

In this episode, Andy and Jonas sat down to discuss what they’ve learned from their first round of guests, Michelle Petties, Ricky Haro, Chris Warner, Matthew Jeffers, Lori Schneider, Michelle Steinke-Baumgard, and Jon Talarico.

As Andy points out, it’s not enough to hear amazing stories and lessons; we also have to reflect on how we can apply them to our lives. And that’s what this episode aims to help us do.

Thinking Differently with Jon Talarico

Thinking Differently with Jon Talarico

In today’s episode Andy and Jonas sat down with Jon Talarico.

Jon is one the world’s leading experts in building high-value relationships, having worked with leaders, celebrities, entrepreneurs, and people just like you and me. Through his company, Million in You, he helps people create an impactful, flourishing, and prosperous life.

But things haven’t always been sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows for Jon. As a child, he struggled with the absence of his father and for two years was sexually abused by a babysitter. As a young adult, Jon self-sabotaged his success with drug and alcohol abuse, got fired from his “safe” job, and often struggled just to make ends met.

Jon understands what it means to climb an uphill battle, but all of these challenges haven’t stopped him. As you listen to this episode, you’ll find that a core tenant of his research and teachings is if we want new results, we don’t start by doing things differently; we start by thinking differently.

Appreciating Life with Michelle Steinke-Baumgard

Appreciating Life with Michelle Steinke-Baumgard

In today’s episode Andy and Jonas sat down with Michelle Steinke-Baumgard. As an author, speaker, fitness coach, mother, and remarried widow, Michelle is on a mission to help people live a full, fit, and intentional life beyond life’s hardest moments.

After losing her husband Mitch in 2009, Michelle used exercise to work through her grief and found it to be so powerful that she eventually quit her corporate job and become a full-time fitness coach. Since then, Michelle went on to write the quintessential book on healing through exercise, Healthy Healing: A Guide to Working Out Grief.

As part of her work, Michelle also leads groups on adventures that test and push people outside their comfort zone, expanding their perspective of the world and of themselves, while also helping them to truly live life to the fullest.

Michelle also gives back to the community in a big way, through her nonprofit, Live the List. This organization helps widows and widowers complete bucket list dreams to honor their late spouse while also moving boldly into their future.

Back to Basics with Matthew Jeffers

In today’s episode Andy and Jonas sat down with Matthew Jeffers. Matthew is an actor based in New York City where he’s worked on numerous off-Broadway productions and currently works on NBC’s hit show New Amsterdam where he plays the role of Dr. Mark Walsh, and you can also see him playing the role of Russell on Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Soon, you’ll be able to see Matthew star in a feature film along with actress Sarah Hays—but the project is so new he wasn’t at liberty to tell us even the name of the film.

During the discussion, Matthew shared his challenges with a rare form of skeletal dysplasia with joint laxity, requiring him to undergo numerous orthopedic surgeries as a child, and stunting his height to only 4 feet, 4 inches tall. Along the way, Matthew shares insight into the lessons he learned about the importance of a singular focus on your mission, and the power of belief in your self and the value you offer the world.

Getting the Point with Chris Warner

Getting the Point with Chris Warner

In today’s episode Andy and Jonas sat down with Chris Warner. Chris is one of America’s most accomplished mountaineers, leadership educators, and entrepreneurs.

He is the ninth United States citizen to summit both Everest and K2 (and for those of you who don’t know, Everest may be the tallest mountain in the world, but K2 is perhaps the hardest mountain in the world to climb because of the athleticism and technical skills required to successfully make it to the top of that rugged mountain, and then back down to safety.

He has led more than 200 international mountaineering expeditions, guided the first-ever reality TV show on Everest for ABC, filmed, starred in and produced an Emmy Nominated documentary for NBC about his K2 expedition, and hosted a leadership special on the History Channel.

As an expert at creating and leading high-performance teams, Chris is one of the rare adventurers in the leadership training and development industry with both corporate and academic expertise, allowing him to equally educate and motivate.

Leaning in with Ricky Haro

Leaning in with Ricky Haro

In today’s episode, Andy and Jonas sat down with Ricky Haro. Ricky is a force of nature. Aside from his work as an adventure mountaineering guide, Ricky has also worked as a SERE specialist with the Air Force, training service members in Survival Evasion, Resistance, and Escape. And if that weren’t enough, Ricky is also an endurance runner, having completed marathons across the globe, and even completed the Badwater Ultramarathon, a 146 mile run through California’s Death Valley where temperatures reach upwards of 130 degrees! Ricky has a lot to share with us in this episode about how he did all these incredible adventures, and as you’ll see, these lessons can be transferable to your life as well. Check out this episode of It’s the Climb to hear the whole story.
