This couldn't be a more timely and urgent conversation with author and investigative journalist Katherine Corcoran. As a former AP Mexico bureau chief, her new book "In the Mouth of the Wolf" investigates the m*rder of Regina Martínez, a legendary woman journalist who exposed government corruption in Mexico. With her acclaimed investigative journalist voice, Katherine looks into why so many journalists were m*rdered in Mexico...why would the Mexican government want to censor and silence these journalists?
Katherine emphasizes that when she started her journalism career freedom of the press was a given, but times have changed since the media and journalists are now considered suspect by both politicians and the American public. She explains that it's important to analyze what media you're consuming and whether or not it has a bias. Then, she distinguishes between pundits and journalists, there is a major difference.
This conversation about the future of the free press is a breath of fresh air since Katherine answers all of Andrew's questions. A few questions include how corporate interests have influenced the journalism field, are the American people really that divided, and what the future of the free press looks like both in America and abroad?

How Do We Engage in Healthy Political Debate? Challenging the Old Guard and Disrupting the System w/ William Ferraro

Do you think that you're able to engage in healthy political conversations right now, especially if you have family, friends, and perhaps even a partner who disagrees with your politics? That's the question that I dissect with today's guest, William Ferraro. Will is not only a good friend of mine but has a background in public policy, was a New York State senate and assembly analyst, and in 2019 ran for Brookhaven Town Supervisor (Suffolk County, New York). He is definitely not afraid to air his political beliefs, and it's extremely refreshing to have such a spirited and unfiltered conversation about how we can try to find political common ground in such a divisive time for American politics.

Diving Into Lesbian Love Stories and Uncovering Female Romances and Role Models w/ Amelia Possanza
Watch/Listen to this and all episodes ad free by joining the ITBR Patreon and get a free trial for the ITBR Professor level! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom
Just in time for Lesbian Visibility Week is an invigorating discussion with Amelia Possanza, a newly minted Lambda Literary Award finalist, about her book "Lesbian Love Story: A Memoir in Archives." Get ready to dive deep into the history of lesbian love stories and explore what it meant to express queer female love before the word "lesbian" even existed. Amelia starts with the mythos behind Sappho, an ancient Greek poet who is known for her queer female love poetry! Then Amelia explores the history of queer women like Gloria Anzaldua, Virginia Woolf, and Mabel Hampton.
She explains that encountering these stories helped her understand how these women were embracing a politics of care and love that existed outside of capitalism. Their stories reveal how capitalism has excluded queer bodies and queer stories since they exist outside of patriarchal systems of oppression. You'll learn a lot from Amelia about how these lesbian ancestors and even Walt Whitman's democratic spirit helped her envision what a caring and inclusive democracy actually looks like. And why did a few gay men on her swim team make her want to look underneath the surface of lesbian romance?

Felice Picano Has Always Been Ahead of the Curve...Sitting Down with the Founder of Modern Gay Literature
Watch/Listen to this and all episodes ad free by joining the ITBR Patreon and get a free trial for the ITBR Professor level! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom
We're joined with award winning author Felice Picano who was a key figure of the Greenwich Village literary community from the mid-1970s through the 1990s. He was one of the founders of the modern gay literature movement, particularly through his involvement with the literary salon the Violet Quill. He explains how Violet Quill came to be, and why he decided to co-found this literary society with six other gay writers in New York City, including Andrew Holleran and Edmund White. Their goal? To meet and give each other creative feedback at a time when gay literature wasn't being taken seriously at all.
During his time in Greenwich Village's gay literary scene, Felice explains that he met many notable authors like Frank O'Hara, Allen Ginsberg, and yes even Truman Capote. In 1977, he founded Sea Horse Press, the country's first gay-oriented publishing house, and in 1981, he became editor-in-chief of The Gay Presses of New York. He continues to teach and write, and one day hopes that Hollywood matures enough to adapt more queer literature into films.

The Truth Behind Capote Vs. The Swans...What Made Truman So Enigmatic & Uncovering The Facts About These Elite Women
Watch/Listen to this and all episodes ad free by joining the ITBR Patreon and get a free trial for the ITBR Professor level! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom
Ryan Murphy's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans" has definitely made a splash and is causing quite the cultural conversation, but what is the truth behind this series? Today, Laurence Leamer, acclaimed author of "Capote's Women," enters the ITBR and reveals what is fact vs. fiction in Murphy's TV series since this show is based off of Laurence's book. Andrew asks what made Capote so enigmatic and captivating to these elite group of women, and Laurence reveals how he researched both Truman's psychology and these nuanced women. Then, Laurence and Andrew get into a conversation about how daring it was for Truman to be so openly gay in a time when being "out" could lead to being fired from the workplace. Through Capote's libelous and factually inaccurate portrayals, Leamer shows how a writer's pen can shape history by spreading gossip, as Capote's versions lived on despite being untrue.
Laurence even details how his unflattering portrayal of Donald Trump in his book "Mar-a-Lago" led to his lifetime ban from Mar-a-Lago which he sees as a badge of honor for his investigative journalism. He has written many acclaimed books including his recent work "Hitchcock's Blondes" and is currently working on an Andy Warhol book, the final in this trilogy that explores creative geniuses and the women in their lives (Capote, Hitchcock, Warhol).

Dr. Andrew Rimby & Mary DiPipi are joined with Christian Garcia (host of That Ol' Gay Classic Cinema) to dissect, analyze, and unpack the powerful docuseries "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV." Why were so many complicit in both Dan Schneider and these s*xual predators ab*sive and exploitative behavior? Drake Bell, Alexa Nikolas, and so many others who were interviewed for this series are so courageous and brave for calling out these predators! If you haven't listened to Drake Bell on Sarah Fraser's podcast, you need to. How could so many write letters supporting Drake's s*xual predator and even accuse Drake of seducing an adult man? Sadly this grooming and toxic culture doesn't exist just in entertainment but in so many industries!

"Democracy Has Not Delivered On Its Promises": Marianne Williamson Enters the ITBR (Rerelease)
(Originally aired on March 27, 2023)
Marianne Williamson, a Democratic presidential candidate for the 2024 election, joins Andrew in the Ivory Tower Boiler Room. Marianne is a political activist, spiritual leader, and best-selling author. In total, she has published 15 books, 4 are #1 NY Times best sellers. In 1989, she founded Project Angel Food, a nonprofit organization that aims to deliver nourishing meals to those with serious illnesses who are home-bound. In 2004, she co-founded The Peace Alliance, a nonprofit organization that pushes for a U.S. Department of Peace. Marianne and Andrew discuss the current political and social climate of the United States, particularly the anti-LGBTQ+ policies that have been consuming the public. Marianne calls it an “explosion of mean-spiritedness.” She mentions the homophobia, racism, antisemitism, and other prejudices that are plaguing the U.S. and emphasizes the need to fight for justice. Marianne talks about the formation behind prejudices. They start as a thought, merge into a behavior, then manifest into a collectiveness of hatred. To combat this negative energy, Marianne explains that we need to harness the power of love in our politics! Love has been the driving force behind movements such as the women’s suffrage movement and the abolitionist movement. On inequality, Marianne discusses how “democracy has not delivered on its promises” for decades. The power is in the hands of corporations, not the people, and that’s why we can’t get the same benefits as other advanced democracies such as universal healthcare, free tuition, and family leave. Marianne also recalls her past, revealing what she wishes she could tell her younger self: savor the present moment, enjoy youth, and believe that everything will one day fall into place. Undoubtedly, Marianne has left us with inspiring advice for our viewers. Dr. Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock, an American gothic literature scholar, and James Yeary, a thriller and horror writer, enter the House of Usher with Dr. Andrew Rimby. TQ Sims, an author who loves to center Queer characters in supernormal situations, joins Dr. Andrew Rimby in the ITBR to talk all about Season 1, Ep. 9 of QAF and their new queer book "Godspeed Lovers." When an episode of QAF begins with a vigorous J*RK OFF and CYBER S*X fantasy sequence, you know this is going to be quite a conversation!
TQ opens up about his complicated relationship with his father and how much he related to Brian's complex dynamic with his father. TQ and Andrew explore whether or not queer men have more complex father-son relationships than straight men. Do straight fathers have patriarchal expectations that complicate their relationship with their queer son? TQ says that these relationships often cause trauma that is explored in their new book "Godspeed Lovers." Then, TQ and Andrew delve into Emmett's cyber fantasies and whether the fantasy is sometimes more fulfilling than the real-life experience? Also, why isn't "Queer as Folk" a new Broadway play or musical? TQ and Andrew are ready to write it! Just to remind you all here's a brief description about the "Daddy Dearest (Sonny Boy)" episode:
Michael decides to break up with Dr. David, who surprises Michael by asking him to move in with him; Lindsay and Melanie ask Brian to relinquish his parental rights to Gus; Emmett becomes addicted to cyber-s*x.

(ITBR Rewatches) "Let's Be Bad,” SMASH S1 Ep5 w/ Elizabeth Winder & Dr. Andrew Rimby (Hosted by Christian Garcia)
Watch/Listen to this and all episodes ad free by joining the ITBR Patreon and get a free trial for the ITBR Professor level! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom
Welcome to the "Let's Be Bad" episode of ITBR Rewatches the iconic "Smash" 2012 American TV show! Hosted by Christian Garcia (Host of That Ol' Gay Classic Cinema). Elizabeth Winder, the writer of "Marilyn in Manhattan," joins us again with her extensive Marilyn Monroe knowledge! The Broadway cast is rehearsing the musical number "Let's Be Bad" which explores the pain and anguish Marilyn went through when filming "Some Like It Hot." Elizabeth explains that this is one of many moments where Marilyn was faced with career difficulties.
Like Marilyn, Elizabeth suffers from insomnia and this is what caused Marilyn to frequently need breaks and have trouble remembering lines. We all provide our artistic interpretation of the choreography in this number since Ivy is being pulled in different directions like a marionette. Then, Elizabeth explains the nuances between Marilyn and Arthur Miller's toxic relationship compared to that of her and Joe DiMaggio. We all express our frustration with Derek who is manipulating both Ivy and Karen for the sake of putting on an incredible show, or is he? And, why do we bring up Britney Spears?
Just to remind you all here's a brief description about the "Let's Be Bad" episode:
Karen puts her talents to use at a government party; Michael and Julia's drama increases; Eileen joins forces with Tom's assistant; Ivy thinks something is amiss in her relationship with Derek.

Is P*rn Feminist? Revisiting the 1980s Anti-P*rn and Sex Wars w/ Dr. Margaret Galvan

It's 1982 and you're eager to attend the Barnard Conference on Sexuality, in NYC, but when you arrive you're met with a multitude of anti-p*rn feminists picketing the event! This cultural moment ignited the start of what's now referred to as the Feminist Sex Wars. Today in the ITBR, Dr. Margaret Galvan, assistant professor of visual rhetoric in the Dept. of English at the University of Florida revisits the P*RN and SEX debates and explains that those picketing the Barnard event led to the censoring of certain sexual material...sound familiar? I ask Margaret whether we are in a new edition of the Feminist Sex Wars and her answer is quite illuminating...I mean she does teach in Florida! Also, did the anti-p*rn 1980s feminists account for GAY P*RN?

Queer as Folk Meets Reality TV w/ Randomly Ronnie Jr. (Cancel Culture & Controversies)
Ronnie Jr. from the Randomly Ronnie Jr. show joined me to recap "Queer as Folk" episode eight, but we got into a riveting discussion after Ronnie asked me whether I would support an LGBTQ celebrity even if they put their foot in their mouth (Todrick Hall anyone)? This sparked such a nuanced discussion concerning cancel culture and Reality TV controversies. Why were people surprised about Ramona Singer stepping in it when Eboni K. Williams kept telling us that the call was coming from inside the RHONY house! Is there a possibility that Eboni, Bethenny Frankel, and Leah McSweeney could repair their relationship and unite together...only time will tell. Andrew and Ronnie agree that Eboni should have her own reality show that features fellow intellectuals, like Dr. Wendy Osefo! And how does a shirtless Jax Taylor come up in our conversation?

Ronnie Jr. from the Randomly Ronnie Jr. show (on YouTube) enters the ITBR again to talk all about QAF with Dr. Andrew Rimby! Ronnie opens up about how nervous he was to sit down with Andrew since this series explores such vulnerable topics like coming out and being kicked out by your parents. Because Ronnie is a Reality TV expert, he discusses the similarities and differences between how queer men are portrayed in scripted shows (like QAF, Looking, and Pose) and unscripted shows. When asked what makes a good LGBTQ+ ally, Ronnie explains that supporting the community means showing grace to those still learning. One powerful moment is when Ronnie defines coming out as a lifelong journey of self-acceptance.

Behind the Curtain: Broadway's Complicated History with Queerness and Bodies w/ Dr. Ryan Donovan
Watch/Listen to this and all episodes ad free by joining the ITBR Patreon for only $5 a month! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom Dr. Ryan Donovan, Assistant Professor of Theater Studies at Duke University, enters the ITBR to discuss Broadway's complicated history with LGBTQ+ representation and different sized bodies. Right away they both gush over their mutual love for Betty Buckley and talk about Nicole Scherzinger's performance as Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard." Then, Ryan explains how he became a professional dancer and then decided to transition from his NYC performance career to enrolling in the CUNY Graduate Center's PhD in Theater program.
Ryan is extremely transparent about the difficulty of securing a Humanities faculty position at a university, and he provides advice as well as discussing with Andrew other career avenues for PhD grads. Interestingly, being an academic and a performer are very similar! Ryan provides a critique of how Broadway has privileged certain bodies over others, and he turns to "A Chorus Line," "Hairspray," and "Dreamgirls" for his argument. Then, Andrew asks Ryan why so many straight men have played queer male roles on Broadway, and why there's still a lack of nuanced queer Broadway narratives. Like Dr. Stacy Wolf, David Armstrong, and Jesse Green's episodes, Ryan takes us backstage to look at new approaches to understand Broadway's history with the LGBTQ+ community.

What Happens When You Come Out as a Lesbian Later in Life..."Late Bloomer: Finding My Authentic Self at Midlife" w/ Melissa Giberson

Author, Occupational Therapist and Proud Late Bloomer, Melissa Giberson, enters the ITBR to discuss her latest novel "Late Bloomer: Finding My Authentic Self at Midlife” where she narrates her own coming out story which starts with a woman who she can't stop thinking about. However, she is married with children and realizes that in order to live her authentic self, she needs to come clean to her husband and kids. On this episode of ITBR, Melissa battles the preconceived notion that she was “born this way” by speaking of a fluidity that enables us to come out “in our own way at our own time”. Melissa warns us that we ought to be aware of those who are threatening the queer community and says we should “live our truest lives but also be aware of the world that we do live in." Finally, Andrew and Melissa share their thoughts on having patience with closeted people and agree that “it’s not on us to force someone to come out" but it's important to be a safe space for them.

Exploring Queer Youth in Literature: Conversion Therapy, Family Ab*se, and Homelessness w/ Lucian Childs (author of "Dreaming Home")

Fiction writer, Lucian Childs enters the ITBR to discuss his new novel “Dreaming Home” where he addresses topics of Conversion Therapy, Family Abuse, and Queer Youth Homelessness by tracing the 40-year history of one Texas family. On this episode, Lucian cites his research on Conversion Therapy and says "42 billion youth are homeless annually and 40% of those identify as LGBTQ+” highlighting a problem where many Americans do not support queer culture, and queer youth find it difficult to receive acceptance in their homes. Lucian and Andrew discuss the difficulties the Democratic party face in having to promote queer friendly laws while also warding off Republican hate speech. Finally, Lucian opens up about the public response to his novel and says “readers that I talk to like the fact they have to fill in the blanks between the stories themselves” displaying the fluidity of the novel and its characters and how they can seemingly merge together.

Unleashing Pleasure and Public Sex in France from the Enlightenment to the 20th Century w/ Dr. Andrew Israel Ross (a Historian of French Sexuality)
Watch/Listen to this and all episodes ad free by joining the ITBR Patreon for only $5 a month! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom
Dr. Andrew Israel Ross, a historian specializing in European history and the history of sexuality enters the ITBR to discuss his first book “Public City/Public Sex: Homosexuality, Prostitution, and Urban Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris” where he details the vast modernization efforts in Paris during the enlightenment era that opened the door for a rising gay and lesbian subculture as well as opportunities for women who sold sex and men who sought sex with other men. Dr. Ross opens up about our impulse to find ourselves in the past but emphasizes that understanding historical context can be just as useful. Dr. Ross details the Marquis de Sade’s salacious material that helped spread outrageous rumors about Marie Antoinette during her reign.
Finally, Dr. Ross links the connection between “19th century queer life” and “the life of working-class women” and wonders if a less constrained sexual politics could arise. Dr. Ross and Andrew discuss the roles of various French historical figures such as: Voltaire, Diderot, the Marquis de Sade, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon, Victor Hugo, Gaston Leroux, Andre Gide, Marcel Proust, Colette, and Jean Genet in this episode and how they’ve all helped shaped French history and literature in interesting ways.

Award-winning writer, Scott Alexander Hess enters the ITBR to promote his new novella, “A Season in Delhi” and to discuss episode 6, " The Art of Desperation,” of the iconic “Queer as Folk” 2000 American TV show! Scott and Andrew discuss Brian’s attractiveness in the QAF world and compare him to Oscar Wilde’s “Dorian Gray” because just like Lord Henry, the QAF characters dictate that Brian is the most attractive and seductive gay man in their group. Furthermore, Scott shares his frustration with Ted’s insecurity towards Roger and argues in a long-term relationship “you love more and more and more just the person like their heart and soul…” allowing one to look past their partner's quirks and shortcomings. Finally, Scott opens up about how queer culture has moved away from the club scene into different avenues.
Just to remind you all here's a brief description about the, "The Art of Desperation” episode:
Michael's new chiropractor boyfriend gets into a tug of war with Brian over Michael, as Ted recovers from his O.D. by dating Roger, a stable but overweight chorus director. Also, Justin meets Lindsay, who is impressed with his artwork.

Learning about Native American Heritage Day and "Killers of the Flower Moon" with My Parents
Welcome to a very special day after Thanksgiving episode with my very own parents. First, I get my parents' honest reactions to Uncle Giuseppe's Pignoli cookies, and then give them adorable gifts from The SoapBox NY (both in Port Jefferson, NY).
Then, we talk about the importance of amplifying Native American voices and provide the background of how Native American Heritage Day came to be (and even the controversy surrounding it). As a white family, we talk about how "Killers of the Flower Moon" is essential viewing to learn about the Osage community and their culture/values and how they were manipulated and abused by white settlers.
After recording, my mom kept repeating "can we have a do over because I'm worried that there's going to be a strong backlash." I assured her that speaking truth to power when it comes to the Native American genocide that we see play out in "Killers of the Flower Moon" is not a fantasy but a reality. At the end of the episode my father emphatically states "What's wrong with history and facts" if it makes you uncomfortable "Deal With It"!

Dr. Shannon Dea, a Professor of Philosophy at University of Waterloo, enters the ITBR to discuss her new book "Beyond the Binary: Thinking about Sex and Gender" which focuses on questions about Gender and Sexuality and attempts to lessen misconceptions about trans, indigenous, racialized and subaltern communities. Shannon and Andrew discuss a growing cosmopolitan community in urban areas as new groups of people come together to form larger more diverse communities. Shannon and Andrew also discuss self-censoring in academia and creating a space for “pedagogical judgement” where an academic might choose to stay silent in order to allow another group to speak for their own experiences. Finally, Shannon flips the table on Andrew and asks him “Do you actually think the public would enjoy traditional academic conference talks or do you think that academic conference talks should change in order to make them digestible by the public”?
