Burt Weissbourd's ROUGH JUSTICE and More
Burt Weissbourd's ROUGH JUSTICE and More
Returning guest Burt Weissbourd is a novelist, screenwriter, and producer of feature films. Today he talks about ROUGH JUSTICE, the latest book in his "Callie & Cash" thriller series, his thoughts on streaming TV as the place for writers to direct their efforts, the role of food in his writing, and much more. He was born in 1949 and graduated cum laude from Yale University with honors in psychology. During his student years, he volunteered at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and taught English to college students in Thailand. After he graduated, he wrote, directed, and produced educational films for Gilbert Altschul Productions. He began a finance program at the Northwestern University Graduate School of Business but left in his final semester to start his own film production company in Los Angeles.  He managed that company from 1977 until 1986, producing films including Ghost Story starring Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, John Houseman, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr, and Raggedy Man starring Sissy Spacek and Sam Shepard, which The New York Times called "a movie of sweet, low-keyed charm." In 1987, he founded an investment business, which he still runs. Burt’s novels include the thrillers Danger in Plain Sight, The Corey Logan Trilogy (Inside Passage, Teaser, and Minos), and In Velvet, which is set in Yellowstone National Park.  Listen to his previous appearances on MGO; in December 2020 and in July 2020. A Book for Short Attention Spans with Gary Lippman
A Book for Short Attention Spans with Gary Lippman
Gary Lippman’s WE LOVED THE WORLD BUT COULD NOT STAY (Rare Bird Books) contains a myriad of one-sentence stories that, while self-contained, are woven together by the human experience. Jump out of one life and into another, a world frozen in time but vividly alive within. This vast web of stories, each with its own language, is all connected by the threads of love, imperfection, and humanity. On today's show, Lippman shares the why and the how of his book of short stories consisting of one sentence apiece, with roots in our society's ever-shrinking attention span. We also discuss the state of fiction and why writers of all genres must be clear and compelling in their storytelling Lippman's debut novel, Set the Controls for the Heart of Sharon Tate, is a tour-de-force we discussed in an episode in January 2020. Listen in here. Visit Gary's website: GaryLippmanOfficial.com. Check out his art: ApocaLippy.com. For detailed show notes including links to books discussed, please visit MGOPod.com. Walter Stephen Geeding on Time Travel and Trickster Gods
Walter Stephen Geeding on Time Travel and Trickster Gods
Master storyteller and former prosecutor Walter Stephen Geeding launched an award-winning series that takes readers on exciting journeys and wild adventures. His novels blend time travel across the Old West with fantasy and history, and though they may be classified as fiction, they feel as real to Walter as anything else. Perhaps it is because his books (Endless Times series (Volume One: The Path of Kokopelli; Volume Two: Murphy’s Diggins) are loosely based on his life escapades as a rebellious young man who explored North America with his best friend after he left home at age 17 with little money and no plans. “I’m a crazy sonofabitch – and that's after I mellowed a bit,” laughs Walter. He is also an accomplished poet. Listen in for a rollicking conversation!
