Meet the Other Dr. Gilmer
When Benjamin Gilmer first took his job as a physician at a clinic in rural NC, he had no idea it would lead him to discover one man’s tragedy and uncover a nationwide mental health crisis. His debut book, THE OTHER DR. GILMER: Two Men, a Murder, and an Unlikely Fight for Justice takes us on a gripping journey through Benjamin Gilmer’s unwilling entry into a harrowing janiform existence, literally taking the place of another physician, Dr. Vince Gilmer (no relation) who had committed a monstrous act.  "What I thought—from the beginning, was that this book is a true-life, page-turning story of a man who committed an unspeakable crime—and the man who wanted desperately to understand why. What I learned after was that the book was not just about the two Dr. Gilmers—it’s about us and how we treat the most vulnerable among us in our prison system and our health system. What initially began as a journey to understand his predecessor turned into Benjamin Gilmer’s life’s mission, advocating for prison and social justice reform and speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves." -- Alex Greenwood, Host But don’t take our word for it. Cacti and Snowflakes in the Office with Devora Zack
In this special crossover episode with our sister podcast, PR After Hours, we meet best-selling author and Leadership Consultant, Devora Zack, whose latest book—The Cactus and Snowflake at Work: How the Logical and Sensitive Can Thrive Side by Side (Berrett-Koehler; Nov 02, 2021) --answers the question: can people with fundamentally different ways of thinking and engaging with the world work together? The answer is yes! Zack says the best use of our energy is to focus on our own reactions and perceptions rather than try to “fix” other people. The book helps readers learn where they are on the Thinker (“Cactus”)/Feeler (“Snowflake”) spectrum. She includes real-life scenarios that show how to nurture one’s nature while successfully connecting with those on the other side. As always, Zack fearlessly and entertainingly dispels myths, squashes stereotypes, and transforms perceived liabilities into strengths. Listen in for a spirited conversation--and can you guess? Is Alex a cactus or a snowflake? Riding the Rails with Ed Davis
Before the current boom in “van life” and nomadic living, author Ed Davis rode the rails – hopping boxcars and freight trains – from Reno to Vancouver, through the Sierras and up and down the Golden State. As a young man, he lived on $5 a day, worked as a carny, and even slept under the same bridge Kerouac once did. Living as a part-time hobo, he and his friends - the “knights of the road” - experienced a world that no longer exists. Those treks across the country eventually led Ed to become a successful businessman, a champion discus thrower, and a loving husband to his wife, Jan, who on occasion had even hopped the trains with him. From this uniquely American experience, Davis brings us his latest novel The Last Professional (January 25, 2022 – Artemesia Publishing), a compelling story of two men linked by a yearning to explore and experience a simpler way of living. In the vein of Kerouac and London, Davis paints a rich tapestry of life on the move where adventure is truly just a freight car away. Listen in! Buy the book here. Claudia Chidester's Trusted Eye
Virginia Fontaine fought continually for recognition—as a woman, a photographer, an art curator, and, perhaps most importantly, a liaison between beleaguered German artists and the outside world. Through journals, letters, and photographs, she recorded her uniquely intimate perspective on this period, amid an ever-changing constellation of artists and friends. Her daughter, Claudia Chidester joins us to talk about her new book about this remarkable woman, Trusted Eye: Post–World War II Adventures of a Fearless Art Advocate.  Fontaine documented her life from a young age: her struggles at Yale Art School, her year as a newlywed in the British Virgin Islands, and her employment in a munitions factory. Later, she helped the Jewish underground in Europe; traveled with gallerists throughout Germany, Switzerland, and France; tangled with the Monuments Men; and experienced the international reach of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist pursuits. Listen to this riveting discussion about a fascinating woman brought to life in a magnificent coffee table book. Learn more about Virginia Fontaine and take a peek inside the book at Fontaine.org. Joann Keder on Making It Happen
A writer since the age of ten, Joann Keder wrote her first novel at twelve, but always convinced herself she wasn't good enough, smart enough, etc. In addition, she had a real lack of a "core" or sense of self her entire life. Part of that confusion was due to being an adoptee who didn't fit in with her family or the small town where she grew up. Consequently, she went through several bouts of depression, both large and small. In mid-life though, she took a leap and earned her master's degree in creative writing, not as a career path but to prove she could do it. Fast forward to today, and Joann has written eight novels (two are award-winners) and has several more planned. Listen in today to hear the frank, inspirational story of a person who found her lifeline in writing. Don't miss it! Visit her website JoannKeder.com. Email her at jkederauthor(at)gmail.com. James Gilbert Goes to Mexico
Thirty-five years ago, James Gilbert’s book was named a notable book of the year by The New York Times. That was for a book on history by the noted historian. Now he is at it again, this time with a suspenseful thriller that reveals a murder mystery that will keep readers guessing – and on the edge of their seats. Murder at the Olympiad, his fourth novel and 16th book, is the second of a series with Amanda Pennyworth as an amateur detective. “I enjoy not only writing about history, but creating whole new worlds in my books,” says Gilbert. “I especially liked drawing Amanda out of nothing.” Join us as we welcome Gilbert back to Mysterious Goings On!  Listen to his first appearance here.  Visit his website here. Chica and the Man
When Sonia Iris Lozada and Alex met on Mysterious Goings On they laughed, joked, and discussed many subjects besides the reason she was there in the first place, to be interviewed regarding her books. They had so much fun that Sonia had Alex on her podcast Poetic Resurrection.  A friendship developed and here we are with Chica & the Man.  Follow the podcast here. Visit the website here. Pop Culture Potpourri with Emma Alvarez Gibson
Listen in for a wide-ranging chat about pop culture with Emma Alvarez Gibson. Emma is the mind behind A Brief Compendium of Cool, a space in which to examine what comprises cool—beyond trends, beyond the current era, and is also damn fun to talk with. She and Alex talk about what's good, like Ted Lasso, what's troubling, like Anthony Bourdain, and what's not so great, as in just about all of the Star Treks since 2009--plus much more!
