“The value of a re-quotable quote is exponential in the economy of marketing. Quotes, sound bites, memorable ideas are like social media memes, easy to recall, recount and regurgitate. The more a leader is quoted, the more social clout they may garner. The more social clout, the greater the influence (as measure by attention and volume). However, the crowd will have one of three reactions to your crafty quotes and sound bites. Hearers will quote them often, misquote them intentionally, or build their life around them as absolute truth - even when the leader’s intent was nothing more than a humorous quip. Leader, guard your quips like you guard your friends both will determine your future.”

“Practice does not make perfect, but it will make permanent. If a speaker, leader, trainer picks up bad habits in their communication style the odds are these habits will stick with them for a while. Practicing the dexterity of vocabulary, enunciation and intonation are critical skills for effective communication. Adding pauses, emotional reflection, and proper pacing in a story bring it to life in a way that narrating the same story cannot. Take the time to rewatch the rehearsal. Listen back to the laugh lines. Reflect on the recollections recounted within your story and ask are they real, right and relevant. Repeating the story 100 times will help you memorize it, but if you are not looking to master these other details a memorized story could still land flat.”

“It might seem silly to rehearse telling a story you lived through. However, it is far too easy to ad lib when you feel confident no one knows the story like you do. I recently heard a speech where the speech giver quoted some very specific stats and then repeated them later in the speech differently, then said, ‘look it up.’ Even when the details are not publicly verifiable data, there is still a chance you will tell the story again and someone will hear something different. “So many lessons to learn in life. So many instances of laughter, sadness, revelation, discovery and contemplation with stories worthy of sharing. Many people I coach have a gift of gab, but not the gift of shut up, listen and converse, just gab. They are good with starting a story, filling it with useless details, occupying a load of emotional space and filling time with word salads, but having a genuine conversation seems over the top. I believe part of the problem is, they don’t know WHICH story is relevant in the moment, crucial to the topic at hand, impactful for the audience (1 0r 1,000) and invested in with proper preparation, so they tell them all… as one. The solution is creating an intentional strategy for story mining.”
