Strange Bedfellows

SB 099 - "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement"
This week, the Hunk Hunters step back and give space to an incredible independent creator. This deep dive into the troubled nation state of Genovia, and the powerful artistic movement inspired by the political turmoil at its heart, will challenge and empower you. But don't worry, we'll get our hunk in the end: It's Chris Pine's Jack Ryan, and he's trying to marry Anne Hathaway so his uncle can be princess!

SB 097 - “Working Girl”
We really stepped in it this week, folks. We went into this scenario half-cocked, landed right in the soft part of a hunk nest, and the cap popped CLEAN OFF. You should have seen it. Never been so many hunks in one place at one time. Like one of those popping videos on TikTok. But, we’ll just do what we always do: chop wood and carry water. Which is to say, we’ll get out there and do our jobs and apprehend all these escaped hunks from 1988’s “Working Girl” before you even know it’s a problem, because we’re really good at what we do, and what we do isn’t very nice. (Hunk hunting.)
SB 096 - "Armageddon"
We may have lost the entire city of Paris this week, but we sure as heck found our hunk—it's Ben Affleck('s Jack Ryan) and he's busy trying to put animal crackers down people's underpants. That's right—the hunt for the hunks of The Hunt for Red October continues ... in space!

Did you know that a human being can speed run the entire 1991 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves NES game in under 30 minutes? Yeah, we thought it would be a lot shorter too. Don’t worry — Tanner and Mr. Butt also have plenty to say about the scintillating movie it’s based on!

The October Hunt for the hunks of the film the Hunt for Red October continues this week as we go for the meatiest part of the hunk: the tender Alec Baldwin(’s Jack Ryan). The movie, and by extension episode, is largely about people in their 60-70s having sex, so if that’s “your thing,” you’ll be right at home.

And what a way to send it off — with a wide-reaching and exhaustive discussion of the live action Ninja Turtles film TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze. (N.B. Emergency transmission from the near future! Please respond by Lakehousing me a letter if you get this. It's me, Lakelyn – or McKayla, depending on when you knew me. Look, names got complicated after the collapse, alright? Anyways, I've hijacked this podcast feed (sorry, not sorry) to send you all a desperate message from 30-40 years from now: DO NOT LET TANNER GREENRING GET HIS HANDS ON ANY KIND OF STOCK REPORT OR SPORTS ALMANAC. Oh and has anyone seen my time bubble? I can’t remember when I left it.

SB 089 - "Hope Floats"
Don't worry – the producers sat down with Tanner before the recording of this episode and had a constructive talk with him about how much people love the movie and how important it is to be sensitive and thoughtful about the sad parts in it. It took us a few takes to get this absolutely perfect, but we think everyone will be very happy with the final product.

SB 088 - "Gravity"
“Hilda Doolittle” – Jack Shepherd, Strange Bedfellows
The Summer of Sandra has gone extraterrestrial with 2013’s “Gravity,” or as we like to call it, “Speed 3: Speed 2 in Space” (”Speed 2” being “Speed” in a boat, and “Speed” being “Die Hard” on a bus.) We wanted to see how hard it could actually be to survive a “Gravity,” so we decided to do one on Tanner this week. It’s an audio nightmare!
SB 087 - "Practical Magic"
Coven-up, team! Witches are real, and it's time for us to find our very own Amas Veritas! Just pray that your one true love is not Mark Feuerstein, because that dude is going to get merc'd so hard, and it's going to be entirely our faults. Hugh Grant's Vernal Dance comes to a scintillating conclusion thanks to the incredible musical talents of guest Jared Sosa and the once-in-a-generation lyrical genius of your boys, Jack and Tanner. Did we fall in love while creating this soon-to-be-smash-hit single for you? Did we reveal breathtaking new information about the secret lives of two deeply beloved, fan-favorite characters? SB 079 - "Two Weeks Notice"
We dodged a real bullet this week (well, not Tanner—he was killed by his Looper closing the loop) when we DIDN’T watch 1995’s “Nine Months” and instead watched 2002’s “Two Week Notice” during the continuing frenzied mania that is Hugh Grant’s Vernal Dance (#HGVD). But that’s not our ONLY viral cause this week, because our intrepid young investigators—Tyson Lamborghini and Stryker Marshall—have blown the lid right off the insidious conspiracy to withhold famous actor and personal friend of the show Mark Feuerstein from appearing in this film. #ReleaseTheFeuersteinCut
SB 078 - "Notting Hill"
Hailed as the “Superman: Dawn of Justice” of its day, our film this week was the first to unite three separate cinematic universes in one story-telling masterpiece. Never before, and to the day of this being written never again since, has a film DARED to invite the “City of Angels” AND the “Little Nicky” narrative universes into its OWN overarching cinematic superuniverse. Really incredible stuff. The film, of course, is 1999’s “Notting Hill.” Part of our “Hugh Grant’s Vernal Dance” celebration.
Credits: Edited by Tanner.
SB 077 - "Wedding Crashers"
It’s more role-playing than not this week as we discuss this classic "squeakuel" to "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and try to perfect our Owen Wilson impressions, which somehow get worse by the end of the episode. But you know what they always say: "Size matters, but in the spy world, it’s reversed!"

Five years ago, two men made a solemn promise: They would tell the story of Agent Associate Baby-Sitter Shannon Kilbourne the way Ann M. Martin always intended it to be told. Almost immediately, one of those men fully delivered on that promise, but literally no one noticed, primarily because of an almost overwhelming lack of interest from the other man. But now, in full technicolor, you can finally hear the breathtaking tale of danger and intrigue known in Baby-Sitters Club-associated circles as "A Time to Kilbourne."

A wonderfully surreal and slightly scary world awaits all those who are brave enough to crawl through the looking glass, speak their own secret names aloud, and become new initiates of the legendary Baby-Sitters Club. But this is just the beginning of the quest, and danger awaits: Will the boys be confounded by the deadly Puzzle Box, disoriented by the mysterious Map Game, or debilitated by the incessant ringing of Claudia’s terrible telephone? There is one funny part in this film (we believe), and we will say what the one funny part is, but—again, for your own safety and protection—we will avoid discussing anything else that happens in this media product as much as is humanly possible given the constraints of this format.

SB 059, "A Rogue of One's Own," by Evie Dumore (feat. Marissa Flaxbart)
We’re joined by Marissa Flaxbart this week and she brought a scintillating piece of literature along with her to discuss: Star Wars “Rogue One!” Sorry, I'm just learning that it was Evie Dunmore’s “A Rogue of One's Own” we discussed and not Star Wars at all. The book had all the hallmarks of a great romance: spider sex, abandoned values, and large, non-iridescent genitals. What more could you possibly want from us?
If you want more Marissa Flaxbart in your life, check out Maximum Fun’s Feeling Seen and her own podcast, The Sweet Valley Diaries. And don’t forget to sign up for her newsletter!

SB 058 - "Can't Hardly Wait"
Don't waste our flavor because we're coming in hot and heavy with some sizzling hot takes about the scintillating masterpiece that paved the way for American Pie. For instance, did you know that a lot of the people in this movie were also in "Six Feet Under"? Wow.

SB 057 - "For Butter or Worse," by Erin La Rosa (feat. Erin La Rosa)
Everyone likes cooking shows but what if they were even steamier ... BECAUSE OF LOVE-MAKING?!!! It's a question we've all asked ourselves, but only one person had the talent and the vision to make it come true. This week, we're joined by special guest Erin La Rosa to talk about love, cooking, and — surprising pretty much everyone — Ninja Turtles.
