In this episode, Jackie talks with Shachella James, Vice President of Infrastructure Ops and Technology Services at CenterPoint Energy. In this role, Shachella leads infrastructure, transport, telecommunications, data center and technology system control center operations. In addition, she supports Information Technology operations for CenterPoint Energy’s competitive businesses.  She is a transformational leader focused on the human and financial implications and enterprise impacts of agile, digital and cloud strategies. Shachella is also an executive sponsor of the Cultural Niketan of India, a CenterPoint Energy Employee Resource Group. Outside of work, Shachella is active in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a volunteer with the youth ministry at her church. As an executive board member for both Child Advocates and Genesys Works Houston, she advocates for under-resourced communities and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Shachella earned her bachelor’s degree in management information systems from Texas A&M University and her master’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a certified technology professional through the PMI and earned her Cyber Security certificate from Cornell University. Shachella is a graduate of Leadership Houston and the American Leadership Forum.  She is an award-winning technology leader as a Top 50 Multicultural Leader in Tech, Woman Who Means Business and a Houston CIO ORBIE Leadership award recipient. (Wow, Shachella!)

Jackie and Shachella are friends, and they are both wellness enthusiasts. They are also both champions for women and girls. Listen as they discuss the importance of transformation during difficult times, reminding us that the road is not always smooth and easy. In this episode, Jackie talks with Chris Rasberry, Director of the Install Base Sales Experience & Platform team within Global Sales at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).  In this role, he leads a team that delivers the data and CRM tool capabilities that help drive account activation for technology refresh, services contract renewals, and GreenLake consumption for Sellers and channel Partners at HPE. Prior to joining HPE seven years ago, Chris spent 17 years in the Capital Markets industry working both in the US and Japan, serving in a variety of operations, human resources, and sales positions. He is also a military veteran having served in the United States Navy from 1993 to 1997. (Thank you for your service, Chris!) Chris is currently in the early stages of earning a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Dallas.  He holds an MBA from the Fox School of Business at Temple University and a BA in International Business & Economics from Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan.  He holds a Post Graduate Certificate in AI for Leaders from the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business and is a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP®).   Jackie and Chris are both committed learners. They met during a workshop, and their common trait of curiosity has kept them connected over the years. In this episode, Jackie talks with Lilian Wee, a commercial manager for Netherlands-based offshore energy and shipping global company Boskalis Offshore Energy. Lilian graduated from Murdoch University in Perth with a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and Hospitality & Tourism Management. She is a born and bred Singaporean and has called Houston, Texas, USA, home since September 2018 after accepting an engagement to her then-fiancée, now husband, to embark on their next phase of life together.

Lilian is passionate about empowering women within the energy sector, and plays an active role in volunteering her time with the Houston chapter of Women’s Energy Network (WEN) as Director of Membership Programming and Executive Membership Chair since January 2019. She is also the host and curator of her own podcast, "Heart Open Convers-Asians," where she explores stories of everyday Asians overcoming challenges and how through tapping into their resilience, courage and strength, strive towards living their one most true, full and present life. This project is a true labor of love! Lilian lives with her husband and beloved border collie mix rescue pup, Sadie, and she thrives the most when surrounded by things, people and activities that nourish her, usually involving food, yoga, nature, travels, books, music, dogs, meaningful connections and new cultures

 

Jackie and Lilian met through WEN, and their conversation is full of great advice for sales leaders at all stages in their careers. Upon moving to the US, Lilian discovered the need to develop a new aptitude for selling in a new country. At this time, her biggest challenge is building her confidence in her new abilities and having greater trust for herself, which will then reflect in the trust that her clients and prospects have in her. The energy that flows with trust and confidence is what fuels new ideas and gets your clients moving on projects with you. In this episode, Jackie talks with David Jacobs, a Principal with TechKnowledge Consulting. Dave is a career IT and sales professional. His previous experience includes sales and management assignments with AT&T and IBM. At IBM, he was the manager of sales training for his division, and was involved in training over 1,000 new hires and college graduates. While Dave is very passionate about his career in IT, his undergraduate focus was in the performing arts. Both Jackie and Dave have a love for the theater. Dave is also involved in serving his community.

Like many experts who have been on this podcast, Dave’s biggest business challenge at this time is recruiting top talent. Hiring for a sophisticated candidate profile can be time consuming, but his business is growing (even in the current economic state), which has helped to attract new talent. Dave manages a great team with the collective philosophy to serve everyone on the project, not just the client contact. When it comes to the art of selling, Dave reminds us that “selling is not telling.” He advocates for holding back on the sales pitch; don’t lead with the technical conversation. Instead, get curious, ask the customer questions and focus on solving for their needs. In this episode, Jackie talks with Michael Simmons, an Account Executive at Atris Technology, an IT and software development company. Prior to that, Michael cut his teeth in sales in the life insurance, hospitality, and building materials industries. Michael Simmons left a career in corrections to enter the world of sales as a life insurance agent in 2010. Although the transition from dealing with inmates to dealing with clients and prospects was a difficult one, Michael was able to find success. From there, Michael entered the hospitality industry, working several positions within the hotel industry and helping to gain the location he worked at the coveted 5 Star Rating. He then took a position at a prominent building supply manufacturer. Next, Michael transitioned into his current role. Despite not having any background in the IT industry, Michael has been able to quickly learn the ins and outs of cyber security, infrastructure management, and regulatory needs of his clients and prospects. Michael continues to onboard new managed IT service clients, and is working towards building an effective sales team for Atris.

Listen as Jackie and Michael discuss the importance of having great listening skills. This means listening to listen, not listening for your next turn to talk. This also ties to Michael’s thought on how sales are becoming more humanized. Long gone are the days of following scripts; the top sales leaders are fully present with their customers, and nimble in their interactions. Michael’s greatest challenge is working to keep the attention of his clients in a world that is so distracted. This is something we all can relate to. As a father of 4, who is soon obtaining his college degree, and is fueled by java, we know that Michael will make all of the right adjustments to continue to meet the needs of his clients, while gaining new ones.

Shachella earned her bachelor’s degree in management information systems from Texas A&M University and her master’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a certified technology professional through the PMI and earned her Cyber Security certificate from Cornell University. In this episode, Jackie talks with Rex Wisehart, founder and CEO of YellowSchmello, a pioneer in the local search marketing business, mostly in the Denver, Colorado market. Rex had a job for nine months once. He did not like it and promised himself he would never have another one. Since then, Rex has been an entrepreneur, writing his own paychecks for fifty-one years. He attempted thirty-eight corporate turnarounds over a 30-year period.  Twenty-seven of those succeeded. Among his turnarounds was a sandwich company where you might have lunch today, a world-class speaker (music speakers) company, and completing the world’s first renewable energy-powered desalination plant. Since 2015 Rex has been a full-time salesperson.  He recently shifted focus from selling timely, targeted, closable sales leads in many markets to a more focused approach.  He is now targeting only home services companies (HVAC, electrical, and plumbing) leads using the same AI and machine learning tool with some modifications. Work aside, Rex is a pretty serious bicycle rider: over filling his garage with 11 bikes.

The Economic Alliance is the economic development corporation for the Houston Ship Channel region; the nation’s largest petrochemical complex and second largest port. The Economic Alliance’s mission is to grow this vital regional economy by attracting new businesses and creating an environment where existing businesses can expand. Chad has oversight of all operational and financial considerations of the organization. He is also responsible for strategic planning, Board of Directors development and maintaining relationships with the 12 member cities, Harris County and Port Houston.

Jackie and Chad are both from East Texas, alum of Texas A&M University, and are huge Aggie sports fans! As Chad describes, he grew up in East Houston in the shadow of the petrochemicals industry. In a full circle moment, he is now in a position to utilize his profession to give back to his hometown, and the industry that has long supported his family, as his role allows him to drive value through economic development.

Chad finds his ‘magic’ in thoroughly understanding and believing the value that his services provide. When you understand your offering and you are confident the outcomes it delivers, selling comes naturally.
