Blake Neely - Masters of the Air

Blake Neely - Masters of the Air

On this episode, I spoke to composer Blake Neely about his work on Masters of the Air. 


Neely has scored more than 35 television series, 20 films, and received 5 ballet commissions. 


He has been nominated seven times for an Emmy Award, where he won in 2021 for his main title theme for the series “The Flight Attendant.”


Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air.


The series stars Austin Butler, Callum Turner and Anthony Boyle.

Wendy Chuck - The Holdovers

On this episode, I spoke to costume designer Wendy Chuck about her work on The Holdovers. 


Chuck has collaborated with some of the film industry’s most celebrated talents including Alexander Payne, Tom McCarthy, Jack Nicholson, George Clooney, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Jane Campion.


Her alchemy with fabric, texture, pattern, and color have brought life to a diverse range of characters on screen: Nebraska’s rustic Midwesterners, Election’s conniving high-schooler, Twilight’s teenage vampires, Spotlight’s journalistic team, and the inhabitants of Downsizing’s miniaturized world.


In 1994, the Australian Film Institute nominated Chuck for Best Achievement in Costume for the period piece Country Life (1994) starring Greta Sacchi and Sam Neill. Other awards followed including a win from the Costume Designers Guild for About Schmidt (2003), and nominations for The Descendents (2011) and Nebraska (2014).


Chuck has enjoyed a long standing working relationship with acclaimed writer/director Alexander Payne and has served as costume designer on all but one of his features. They have collaborated on hits like Sideways (2004) starring Paul Giamatti and Election (1999) starring Reese Witherspoon.


She is currently working on Disney’s Lilo and Stitch (2024) and her own capsule collection.

KELLY O’SULLIVAN (Writer and Co-Director):

Kelly O'Sullivan is a writer, director and actor. She wrote and starred in SAINT FRANCES which premiered at SXSW and won a Special Jury Prize for "Breakthrough Voice" and the Audience Award for Narrative Feature. SAINT FRANCES, released by Oscilloscope Laboratories, is one of the most acclaimed independent films of 2020. Kelly received a Gotham Award nomination for Breakthrough Actor, a John Cassavetes nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards and

was also named one of Filmmaker Magazine's "25 New Faces of Independent Film." 


Kelly was recently seen in Cooper Raiff's acclaimed 2022 film CHA CHA REAL SMOOTH, and will next be seen in the independent films HANGDOG, directed by Matt Cascella and THE GRADUATES by Hannah Peterson.


On the small screen Kelly has appeared in two seasons of "Sirens" as well as Hulu's "Battleground" and FOX's "The Mob Doctor." Her theater credits include THE SEAGULL at The Goodman and seven productions at the Steppenwolf including THE CRUCIBLE.


Kelly recently made her debut behind the camera with the short film "My Summer Vacation."


ALEX THOMPSON (Co-Director)

Alex Thompson is a writer, director and producer based in Chicago. His debut feature, SAINT FRANCES, premiered at the '19 SXSW Film Festival and won the Grand Jury prize for "Breakthrough Voice" and the Audience Award.

It’s a movie that I’m relishing as an adult, and yearned for as a kid. I can imagine some queer teenager telling their mom they were seeing the latest latest summer blockbuster, only to actually be sneaking into this hyper-fluid world. At least… that’s what I would have done.

I got to talk to Sachs about that exact feeling while watching Passages, an honor and privilege I won’t soon forget.

Mark Ulano - Killers of the Flower Moon

On this episode, I spoke to production sound mixer for Killers of the Flower Moon, Mark Ulano. 

In 1998, Ulano won the Oscar for Best Sound for his work on Titanic. 

He was also nominated for a BAFTA and won a Cinema Audio Society Award for the film. 

Since then, Ulano has been nominated for 3 more Oscars (Inglorious Bastards, Ad Astra and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), 2 more BAFTAs (Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Django Unchained), and 4 more C.A.S. Awards (Iron Man, Super 8, The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). 

Ulano is a titan in the sound space. Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese, is out tomorrow.

Gertler is a 2x Oscar nominee for his work on How to Survive a Plague and All the Beauty and the Bloodshed. 

In 2007, Gertler won the Producers Award for the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

For How to Survive a Plague, Gertler won a Gotham Award for Best Documentary and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. 

For All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Gertler was nominated for BAFTA Film Award for Best Documentary, a Cinema Eye Honors Award for Nonfiction Feature, a Gotham Award for Best Documentary, and a British Independent Film Award for Best International Independent Film. He won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary for the Laura Poitras directed project. 

His latest project is called Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked a Queer New York, where he was a writer and executive producer.
