Episode 9: The future of forests (part II)

Episode 9: The future of forests (part II)

Jack spoke back in Season 1, episode 8 about the future of forests and this episode offers part two, but with a twist. The future of forests by measuring the world's forest biomass.
Jack talks to Vicki Lonnon, the quality assurance manager from Airbus who is working on a new European Space Agency (ESA) satellite mission, that will monitor forests from space using a special P-band radar that's never been used before. The data collected will look at how much carbon is being stored by forests across the world and how this is changing over time, allowing a 3D map of the world's forests to be created. The satellite is due to be launched next year.
The pair discuss:
- what forest biomass is
-the role forests play in climate change
- the satellite mission and what's involved
-why the mission is needed
-what impact the mission could have
-views of reaching net zero

Tune in to learn something new- a fascinating episode about technology that certainly will shape our future 🌍🌲

Episode 23- The Future of Magic

Episode 23- The Future of Magic

This weeks episode is about the future of magic!!!!
Jack welcomes his special guest and probably the first celebrity he's spoken to, Aidan McCann who is a young magician and actor. You may recognise him from Britain or Ireland’s Got Talent as well as appearing on The Ellen Show in America and lots lots more. Very exciting!!
There is clip of Aidan in the finals of BGT on Jack To The Future's social media pages. Hope you enjoy watching!
Jack and Aidan talk about how Aidan got into magic in the first place; his experiences on reality TV shows and how his perseverance paid off; if it’s difficult to make up tricks and whether technology will make tricks better or may actually spoil magic in the future.
This spurs on a line of discussion about magicians using new techniques to perform tricks and what makes a good one. Aidan even performs a trick live on the podcast for you to hear and Jack returns the favour by performing a maths trick on him!
A jam packed episode of fun!

Episode 19- The Future of Clothing

Episode 19- The Future of Clothing

An episode on a complex topic, 8 year old Jack speaks honestly  with Katie Carr, owner and founder of Tommy and Lottie , which is a unisex, ethical and sustainable gift brand, based in St Albans, Herts.

Jack shares some shocking statistics; they talk about her business; the difference between fast and slow fashion, sustainable materials and what people could do to make their clothes last longer instead of buying new ones all the time. As well as the possibilities of  what clothes shops will look like in the future and whether they will actually exist and how technology is influencing customers behaviour when they’re shopping.

Together, they weave in an invention from Jack's favourite film and discuss how this may make recycling and sustainability a possibility in the future!

Lots of useful resources, brands  and other websites mentioned here (no affiliation) to explore to see what's on offer currently, but as both mention during the episode, it's a start, but not enough. Listen in and see whether it results in any  changes you may consider making.

Jack's Q&As - The Future of Christmas

What do you think the future of Christmas will look like?

After reading an article by Ericcson (https://www.ericsson.com/en/blog/2020/12/future-of-christmas) about Christmas in 2050, Jack got talking about his predictions for Christmas in the future.

Jack tests your listening ear with some Christmassy tunes.

Regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, this mini episode talks about ways that we communicate and celebrate the holiday season and celebrations with our friends and families; what we eat; how we celebrate and how gift giving could change. A combination of ponderings about technology, traditions and the climate; makes for an interesting reflection about Christmasses of old and in the future as we move into a New Year.

Episode 12- The Future of Mental Health

Episode 12- The Future of Mental Health

What do you do to stay mindful? Maybe exercising, meditation, staring at a glitter jar, breathing techniques or practising gratitude? Or you might be thinking, I'm not really sure what that is?...

Whatever your understanding or current habits , this is the place for you! Following the easing of lockdown in the UK, this week's topic seemed like an apt choice. It's also Mental Health Awareness Day on the 10th October - perhaps this episode may give you some ideas in advance and help you to reflect on what you are doing regularly to boost your own mental wellbeing.

In Jack's 12th episode, another two-parter,  he chats to Jess and Joe from Hertfordshire Mind Network. The charity support all over 18s in Hertfordshire, as well as offering specific support to children and young people over the age of 10. They talk about what the mental health charity do to support children, young people and their parents and carers, as well as professionals working with them. They reflect on how Covid has affected how they run the service and impacted upon service user; discuss some practical tips to help with anxiety; debate the pros and cons of social media for mental health  and,  of course, their ideas for what the future of mental health may look like.🔮

Jack was also very excited to speak to Ros from Mindful Magic, Royston which is a mindfulness🧘‍♂️ group aimed at children between 5-10 years old.   Not only does Jack find out about the group,  they share ideas about techniques for children (and adults) to relax, unwind and be in tune to their feelings and why that’s so important. Listen out for the shark breath! Ros takes us through a guided meditation and hopefully, everyone is feeling zen by the end of the episode...🤞 It’s a super line-up, not to be missed!
