As a Master’s graduate in Civil Engineering with a First Class Honours degree, Virtue is highly dedicated and enthusiastic about pursuing a career in the Engineering field with the ultimate aim to become a Chartered Civil Engineer.

In addition to being a Civil Engineer at Taylor Woodrow, Virtue is a part-time YouTuber. Her channel, “The Virtuous Life”, with more than 5,000 subscribers and 400,000 views, has provided her with a unique platform to reach a wider audience and serve as a role model for those seeking representation in the field.

 She is also an ICE STEM Ambassador and does various outreach work in hopes to inspire the younger generation. Her work has allowed her to participate in an Engineering game show presented by Richard Hammond.

Ama is Head of Product Development at 52 North Health Ltd, where she leads the company’s engineering teams. She is a multi-award-winning engineer including being named the 2022 Young Woman Engineer of the Year by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and Top 50 Women in Engineering (Inventors and Innovators) by the Women’s Engineering Society. 

She has a love for Global Health and Engineering, and has spent her career at the forefront of healthcare innovations making significant contributions to the technical development of a wide range of products and processes. She is also passionate about advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in young people with a particular focus on girls and those from the Global Ethnic Majority.

Engineering Success interviews Lucy Davies an Integration Engineer at BAE Systems.

Lucy studied for an MEng in Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University, completing a summer and year internship during her course before joining the BAE Systems graduate scheme in September 2021.

During her graduate scheme she worked at the forefront of aerospace technology and has contributed directly to the next generation of military aircraft design through the Tempest programme. Lucy worked as a Safety Integration Engineer which meant that she worked on every element of the platform and completed analysis that led to physical design changes on the aircraft.

After recently finishing on the graduate scheme Lucy has taken a new role on BAE System’s new Electric Products programme, working on cutting edge sustainable aircraft design.

Lucy recently passed her IEng and is now an Incorporated Engineer with the Royal Aeronautical Society.

During university Lucy noticed the disparity between the number of male and females studying engineering and started devoting time to showcasing the STEM field to younger people. Through her tenure as the Programme President she was able to establish the courses first EDI committee and has since carried on this work, being an active STEM ambassador and now sitting on the WISE Young Professionals’ Board as the Engagement Lead.

Episode 045 - Charlotte Huntley

Engineering Success interviews Charlotte Huntley a Junior Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation Engineer.


Charlotte joined Arcadis in 2016 as an apprentice and has since developed into an Engineer. Charlotte produces design and engineering solutions across multiple Water Industry Clients on drinking water and wastewater projects.


Charlotte has obtained her Diploma, HNC and HND with Distinction grades, and has just been awarded a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with first class honours.


Charlotte became professionally registered as an Engineering Technician with the IET in 2018.

Charlotte was awarded Apprentice of the year in 2020 by the Pump Centre as part of their Young Engineer Awards. She was also awarded Technician of the Year with the IET in 2022.


Charlotte is a STEM ambassador and regularly volunteers to mentor disadvantaged youths interested in engineering and/ or apprenticeships. She has also published case studies with the Engineering Council discussing the benefits that being professionally registered has brought her, in the hopes this would inspire others in the industry.

Jacqueline has 7 years’ experience in the oil, gas and renewable energy sector, representing a few of the top tier International Oil Companies (IOCs) and National Oil Companies (NOCs) within the EMEA & APAC region. She holds a degree in Oil & Gas Management and a masters in Offshore & Ocean Technology with Subsea Engineering. 

 

Her career initiated as Project Controls Engineer leading large infrastructure projects across Europe, Asia and Africa. She is currently a Finance Business Partner for the Strategy, Sustainability and Ventures team at bp, providing business performance oversight to bp’s Executive Leadership Team.

 

Jacqueline has a huge passion for the progression of females, underrepresented ethnic groups and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. She is an advocate for DE&I, psychological safety and mental well-being, appointed Ambassador at bp, Board Member at the Association for BME Engineers (AFBE-UK) and Future Energy Leader 2023 at the World Energy Council. 

 

Jacqueline is well-known for a diligent synthesis of stamina, skill and talent previously involved in strategic initiatives to challenge the status quo. She aspires to become a global energy leader who implements positive change and brings forth sustainable energy transition solutions.

Episode 043 - Colette Bell

Engineering Success interviews Colette Bell is an Engineer at Roke.

Colette works as a full-stack software engineer on her current project, she also chairs the Women in Roke ERG and leads the STEM outreach out of Roke’s Manchester office.

Colette has a MEng degree in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Manchester, where she won the Department of Materials Prize for Best Project 2020 for her research on machine learning in materials analysis. Despite her background and industrial experience in materials and processes, the research inspired her to pursue a career in innovative digital technologies, this took her to Roke.

In her first year, Colette picked up the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award for her work with the women’s network, ED&I and STEM, and was part of the winning and runner up teams awarded the ‘Project Team of the Year’.

Rotations on the graduate development program have so far included AI innovation, hardware and software development and exposure to the bidding lifecycle. Still investigating which specialism she wants to pursue in the future, she’s continues to upskill with support from the wealth of technical experts at the company.

Inspired by a woman chemical engineer who visited her school when she was young, Colette is driven to provide similar inspiration to young people who might not have exposure to engineering as an accessible career. Through running Girls in Engineering days, hosting work experience and campaigning for Roke’s attendance at nationwide STEM events such as The Big Bang, she hopes to keep spreading the word about the huge variety of rewarding engineering careers available to all.

Engineering Success interviews Tosin Sonubi a Data Engineer.

Oluwatosin (Tosin) Sonubi studied BEng in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering at Warwick University. She found her passion for data during her course and pursed transition into tech, teaching herself programming, but capitalising on her transferable skillset.

She has only been a Data Engineer since 2021 but she has achieved an outstanding amount in that time. She credits her neurodiversity for the unique way in which she navigates the space and the challenges within it. Tosin also has experience as a DEI consultant and science communicator/speaker, she leverages all of these facets of herself in her data career.

Tosin is passionate about ‘paying it forwards’, and therefore engages in various outreach/ volunteering initiatives. She is active within groups supporting underrepresented individuals and the future of tech. With a technical background in data governance and ethics, Tosin advocates for the fair use of data and engineering for good.

Episode 041 - Arrmeila Jeyanathan

Engineering Success interviews Arrmeila Jeyanathan an Industrial Engineering in Rail and Control Systems and Signalling. From being introduced to STEM at school and getting involved in science competitions Arrmeila was inspired to study Integrated Engineering at Cardiff University. Whilst at University she worked at Network Rail as Railway Signalling Engineer and since graduating in 2021 she has been on the Network Rail graduate scheme training in the railway signalling discipline. Since Arrmeila’s placement year up until now she has had some successes and opportunities such as receiving an award for her dissertation as well having the opportunity to present & publish her work at a conference. Through these experiences and being a direct recipient of early engagement, Arrmeila has really developed a passion for railway engineering and promoting to the younger generation where she’s done so being an active STEM ambassador. Arrmeila also volunteers for the IET London Young Professionals network since Oct 2021 as secretary. She has dedicated a lot of her free time towards creating events and opportunities for young people to connect including a new initiative starting this year called Female Leaders to promote women in engineering.

Engineering Success interviews Kemi Akinola a Principal Process Engineer in the Water Industry.

Kemi has BSc and MSc degrees from Imperial College London and over nine years' experience in the UK Water Industry.

Through her career to date, she has contributed, inter alia, to the design; and enhanced operation, of several water and wastewater treatment works, by providing process engineering expertise for major capital projects and day-to-day site operation.​

Kemi is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager and a winner of several awards including the CIWEM ‘Annual Conference Young Ambassador 2016’ award and Northern Power Women 'Future List 2018' award.

​She is passionate about enhancing people's lives and is currently involved in several International Development initiatives, such as RAEng Frontiers for Development. She also enjoys volunteering with charities such as Compassion UK. As a female Engineer, Kemi actively supports and encourages young and upcoming Engineers. She is also a Sustainability Enthusiast and an Inspirational Blogger.

Furthermore, Kemi is the author of the book, Getting Chartered: The First or Next Time, which provides helpful pointers from her chartership journey, for aspiring Chartered Professionals.

Engineering Success interviews Philippa Jefferis a Business Excellence Manager at BAM Nuttall


Philippa has been lucky to explore the world through engineering.

 

Starting in the UK, she soon found herself involved in road maintenance in Sydney, Australia before a brief stint back home in the UK managing roads here.  She has since had the opportunity to work in Sierra Leone, Nepal and Pakistan and dreams of being able to claim she has worked in all 7 continents. 4 down, 3 to go!

Though reluctant at first to become an engineer, partly due to not really knowing what one was, Philippa now promotes engineering through being a QE Prize Ambassador. Engineering gives an opportunity to see behind the scenes of how the world works, and Philippa has always enjoyed problem solving.


Her current role allows her to "zoom out" to see the bigger picture, of where engineering sits within the wider commercial context, yet she still enjoys the opportunity to get on site and see the difference made on a daily basis by civil engineers.

Mo has previously worked as a Materials & Corrosion Engineer within the Oil and Gas industry for over a decade and is very much passionate about teaching and inspiring kids about STEM subjects.

She is the Owner of Asa West - a UK based fashion retailer established in 2017 and is also the founder of ‘More Blessed to Give’ charity established in 2012 which provides outreach and support for homeless men, women and kids as well as financially supporting individuals for higher education in Nigeria.

Mo is the host of ‘The 360 Lady Podcast’ - a podcast that inspires and equips women to be the highest and healthiest version of themselves. She became a member of AFBE in 2018 and currently a Board Member leading the Gala Awards 2023.

Working for a sustainable building materials company Erusa's role involves supporting and developing the roadmaps that will allow the hard to decarbonise industry to reach net zero targets.

Erusa is a Chartered Engineer and has Masters Degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Management and Safety, and Reliability Engineering.

She is passionate about the energy transition and has had various roles, all exclusively within energy, from oil and gas services to electricity transmission to power generation. Erusa is a STEM Ambassador and a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) Energy Panel and an IET Education Volunteer.

In 2021 Erusa won the IET Volunteer Core Values Award for Integrity.

She is passionate about promoting STEM as well as working to improve diversity in energy especially low carbon and sustainability fields through her initiative Power to Diversity.

Engineering Success interviews Floriane Fidegnon-Edoh a Consultant for BMNT

Floriane is currently working on the Royal Navy contract, helping them to correctly identify and translate operational problem areas.  She has a background in manufacturing engineering and public policy, having worked in a manufacturing production environment, a public policy think tank and the charities sector.

Prior to joining BMNT, Floriane was a department head in a public policy think tank, as the head of the Industry, Technology and Innovation team. She has extensive experience working with civil servants, parliamentarians, private and public sector stakeholders across manufacturing, data analytics and innovation policy translating and publishing challenges into actionable recommendations for government. As a manufacturing engineer for a major pharmaceutical company, she contributed to a number of lean and innovation-led programmes that were adopted to improve production performance.

Floriane is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) design and manufacturing policy panel and an IEEE TechEthics ambassador, advising professional institutes on their engagement with industry and academia in emerging markets.

Floriane is passionate about diversity, inclusion, equity and youth engagement in STEM. She founded and led the Warwick Women’s Engineering Society, is a Royal Academy of Engineering Leaders Scholar, and regular science communicator. She is a charity trustee for Stemette Futures as well as the Chairperson of the Stemette Futures Youth board. She holds a first class BEng in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Warwick.

Engineering Success interview Caitlin McCall a Senior Research Engineer at Manufacturing Technology Centre in the field of Automation and Electronics.

She is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Previously, she was a Materials and Manufacturing Engineer at Swansea University where she worked towards her ESPRC funded Engineering Doctorate in printed electronics for flexible packaging. She has published a paper in biosensors for glucose detection and is writing several more from her doctoral research.

In 2021, Caitlin was awarded a place in the prestigious WES Top 50 Female Engineers list and a We Are The City Rising Star Award in 2022 for her contributions to the engineering industry.

Caitlin is passionate about developing peoples' skill sets and supporting her community. She enjoys promoting engineering as Chair for the Women's Engineering Society's (WES) Early Careers Board and member of the WES Event Directors Committee.

Roy is a Royal Society of Edinburgh RSE – Unlocking Ambition Enterprise Fellow with technical, entrepreneur and intrapreneur skills working as a director of sales at TenzorGEO Ltd to provide micro seismic data acquisition and interpretation services to the oil and gas companies in the North Sea and internationally  aimed at maximising economic recovery and monitoring reservoirs.

Roy has over 10 years of experience in business, sales and entrepreneurship having started his own company in Nigeria and has co-founded 2 start-up companies in the UK. He has participated in various entrepreneurial workshops and accelerator programs across the UK where he won pitching competitions and grants for his business.

He is a Geologist with degrees in geology and mining, a master’s in environmental management and a doctorate in geology focused on reservoir characterisation for CO2 storage.

Roy has a passion for giving to others and is a committed member of the AFBE Scotland UK, where he volunteers his time and energy to help develop others contributing to leadership and STEM activities in Aberdeen.

Zainab Adigun studied BEng in Civil Engineering at Brunel University then a MSc Structural Engineering on a Women in Engineering full scholarship.  Zainab designs new buildings and small refurbishments projects across all sectors.

As social value champion and EDI team member for her organisation, she helps to define strategy and deliver on social value commitments. Zainab volunteers as a board member for the Association for Black and Ethnic Minority Engineers (AFBE) where she is the team leader for the Making Engineering Hot which works with young people from black and other ethnic minority groups to expose them to careers in engineering.

Recently, Zainab was listed as one of 100 Finalists for the Top Women in Engineering 2022 Awards as recognition of her contribution in encouraging females to consider a career in engineering. She has also been shortlisted for the CN & NCE Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering awards.

Amber chose technical subjects at school and studied general engineering at college. Amber gained an apprenticeship as a Toolmaker which took her through various departments within the company she was working for, being Machining, Die Maintenance and Ancillaries.

Amber then moved into new product introduction within the injection moulding industry where she gained valuable experience in Project Management.

Always challenging herself Amber now enjoys her role at High Speed Rail Solutions.

Passionate about raising issues for Women in Engineering Amber is an advocate for adjustments to Maternity packages and flexible return to work support currently provided, and works hard to highlight and influence that change.

Engineering Success interviews Dr Margi Vilnay a Lecturer in Structural Engineering at the University of Dundee.

Dr Margi Vilnay is a Lecturer in Structural Engineering and the Director of Public Engagement and Outreach for the School of Science and Engineering at the University of Dundee.

Margi completed her BSc (Hons) followed by a Research MSc (Cum Laude) in Structural Engineering, investigating the protection of historic structures as part of an EU funded project. Subsequently, Margi obtained her PhD from Heriot Watt University looking at assessing the behaviour of reinforced concrete columns under blast loads. Margi then went on to work as a structural engineer in the oil and gas industry before returning to academia. Margi joined the University of Dundee in her current roles in 2020.

Margi holds a postgraduate certificate in higher education and is a senior fellow of the higher education academy. She is a chartered member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and is the Education and Inspiration lead for the local branch. She is also the first woman to be elected Vice-Chair of COMEC (Council of Military Education Committees).

Margi is committed to increasing the number of young people engaging in STEM through public engagement and outreach activities, and in particular, the number of women entering the engineering profession. She has led several initiatives in those areas, including the first International Women in Engineering Day events in Dundee, Mentoring and outreach schemes.

Engineering Success interviews Dr Emma Yhnell a Neuroscientist and Senior Lecturer based in Cardiff, Wales.

Emma is an award-winning science communicator and she is making it her mission to make science more accessible, inclusive and fun for everyone.

Emma is a first generation academic and a regular contributor to local radio and television as well as a commentator for the Science Media Centre. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and changing the minds of people who nervously think science isn't for them.

Emma obtained her BSc honours degree in Biochemistry before completing a PhD in Behavioural Neuroscience and Huntington's Disease. She then obtained a prestigious research fellowship to work with families impacted by Huntington's Disease.

Emma is passionate about teaching and learning and has been accredited with a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Trials from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, completed part-time via distance learning.

A keen public speaker Emma aims to inspire audience's with her infectious enthusiasm and ability to deliver interactive and accessible sessions.

She is an active member of her professional institution, The Institution of Civil Engineers, where she is a member of The ICE Thames Valley, ICE Policy and External Affairs and ICE Communication Committees.

Ayo was also nominated for the Top 50 Women in Engineering under 35 (WE50) initiative run by The Telegraph in partnership with The Women's Engineering Society (WES)

Episode 025 - Dr Nike Folayan MBE

Dr Nike Folayan MBE is a Chartered Engineer and gained a PhD in electronics engineering from the University of Sheffield.

Nike is a Technical Director at leading Engineering and Consultancy firm WSP, but is more widely known as the co-founder of AFBE-UK (Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers).

AFBE-UK was founded by Nike and her brother Dr Ollie Folayan in 2007 and through it there has been tremendous growth in the inclusion of Black and Minority Ethnic people in Engineering.

Nike is one of the leading voices and advocates for more representation of BME engineers in industry and works relentlessly through AFBE-UK to support under-represented individuals. AFBE-UK has actively supported over 20,000 individuals seeking work in engineering and engineering related subjects whilst also engaging a mix of communities across the UK ranging from companies to engineering institutions and schools, to develop and showcase the engineering talent available within the BME community thereby contributing to the wider engineering talent pool.

Nike has been awarded an MBE for her contribution to Diversity in Engineering.

Ellie has always wanted to be a pilot from a very young age. The physics and mathematics of flying always fascinated Ellie. When Ellie was eight she became fascinated with high altitude flight and an aircraft called the U-2. The science of flying at such altitudes was intriguing and she was fortunate enough to meet the aircraft and her crews which propelled her towards her dream.

Ellie became the youngest female solo pilot when she took a day off school to solo gliders on her 14th birthday. She followed this up by soloing powered aircraft three days after her 16th birthday, due to storm Diana preventing her from flying on her birthday. Ellie collected her PPL on her 17th birthday.

Since then Ellie has added various ratings including her tail wheel rating which allows her to fly a 1943 Piper L4 Grasshopper which served in D-Day!

Ellie most memorable aviation moments to date include flying to Belgium, which won her an international aviatrix award, and having an engine failure after take-off resulting in a Mayday and a forced landing into some long grass.

Ellie is currently studying her A levels along with an EMC in carbon neutral propulsion. Her ambition is a career in aviation and is hoping to study Aeronautics and Astronautics, which have been her ambition since she was 10 years old.

Ellie is a speaker for many organisations such as Farnborough Airshow and Youth Education and Support as well as doing regular interviews and podcasts along with going into schools to encourage more girls to consider careers in STEM and aviation.

Sophie is one of the youngest engineers to have achieved Chartered Engineer status at just 25 years old.

She works at the forefront of aerospace technology, developing advanced designs and concepts for new generation fast jets and aircraft that operate in space as well as inside the atmosphere.

Sophie has contributed directly to BAE Systems hypersonic capabilities including applying technologies from first hybrid air-breathing rocket engine system (SABRE) being developed by Reaction Ltd, which could revolutionise travel from the atmosphere into space. One day she hopes to go into space herself as an Astronaut.

Sophie is an exceptionally talented engineer with her creative and innovative approach. Her work on hypersonic air vehicles includes building the necessary business cases and defining the product philosophy at each stage of development. She has also led a process transformation programme within the avionics department at BAE Systems, which involved engaging with 400 other engineers to streamline the avionics design process.

In 2018 Sophie was awarded the Bee Beamont award which recognises newly qualified engineers who have made an outstanding contribution to the business in the early stages of their career. She also won the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award and again in 2018 Sophie was awarded the Sir Henry Royce Medal which recognised her research in developing future technologies for the aviation industry.

In 2019 Sophie won the RAEng Young Engineer of the Year and the RAES Young Person's Achievement award.

Sophie is an active STEM Ambassador and features in the Royal Academy of Engineers flagship 'This Is Engineering' campaign promoting careers in engineering.

Having always known that she wanted to work in construction Michelle started out life wanting to be an Architect. Having completed her degree in Architecture she embarked on studying part-time for a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management after securing her first role as an Assistant Project Manager with a consultancy firm in Leeds.

Over the past 18 years Michelle has worked for a number of large international consultancies firms including Arcadis, Mace and Deloitte in the Project Management teams. In addition to this Michelle has worked as an Operations Director for a small construction company and is now a Senior Project Manager with a large property developer in Manchester and is responsible for over £150m of construction works in and around Manchester.

Having worked for client, contractor and consultancy, Michelle has an excellent understanding of the design and construction process throughout the lifecycle of a project and an acute understanding of how to interpret the client's needs. Michelle's leadership style is to work together in partnership, in open and honest relationships with a focus on developing the team. Her aim is to ensure that she delivers all projects on time, on or below budget with zero health and safety accidents or incidents in order to build successful trusted client relationships.

It has an internal and external focus and is an excellent example of embedding EDI practises across a complex organisational structure.

Sarah's route into engineering is a little unusual: her background is mathematics, having several degrees, but has a PhD in mechanical engineering from University College London.

Sarah calls herself "sort of engineer/mathematician/systems engineer". Her first jobs were in programming and analysis and then as a lecturer at University College London where she worked on the development of reliability and AI based maintenance planning of offshore structures.

She is currently Deputy President of INWES, the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists and she has been involved in activities to increase the number of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) since 1992. She is also a senior advisor and a Fellow of the Institute of Innovation & Knowledge Exchange, driving innovation skills in scientific and tech corporations, including defence and global companies, and a Director at The STEM Foundation supporting vocational STEM education and leading the STEM Assured accreditation scheme.

Her expertise is in skills strategy and policy development for innovation, STEM education and the engineering and technology sectors. Most of her work is with leadership teams, supporting them to develop better ways of doing things. She is also involved in international projects as a designated EU expert in gender and STEM. Her other projects include condition monitoring data interpretation and curriculum development for new engineering programmes.
