World Travel Dad Show

World Travel Dad Show

By James Olsen

Each week I discuss itineraries, travel hacks, money-saving tips, and practical advice, all recorded during a 14-month family trip to Europe and Southeast Asia. Each show is a travel guide for a place we visited. Now that we are back home in the States, the episodes are less frequent, but I will try to keep the travel content coming for 2024 and will have some flashback episodes in case you missed Vietnam, Turkey, Thailand, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy, England, Iceland, Sweden, and others during the first airing.

Spain #3 - Mallorca, Spain

Spain #3 - Mallorca, Spain

This week, I’m recording from Mallorca, Spain in my last location cast. I can’t wait to share this island with the listeners. We’ve had so much fun here, and in Spain in general.
I share my closing thoughts on our month in Spain, and why I was somewhat surprised by how enjoyable of a country it was.
I then get into a dos and don’t segment that should be helpful if you plan to travel to Spain and/or Mallorca. If you know of anyone who is traveling to these places, please share this episode. Thank you for your help in growing this podcast.
And in bloopers, I recall my hike in Vietnam when I ruined my favorite jogging shoes.

Northern Vietnam Travel Guide - Plus highlights from our month-long trip to Vietnam

Northern Vietnam Travel Guide - Plus highlights from our month-long trip to Vietnam

Back in the US, I continue to go over my notes and prior podcasts to pull out the useful information.  This week, I cover Northern Vietnam, which was a show topic for several weeks last February.

Highlights were Hoi An, Phong Nha, Sa Pa, and Hanoi.  If you have any further questions about how to make a trip to Vietnam happen, see my instagram post about the pros and cons of Vietnam.  It is sure to guide you in the right direction.

In the second part of the show, I clipped some of the highlights from our trip to Northern Vietnam for a trip down memory lane.  From the scooters, to the beer and food costs, and the overall natural and cultural beauty, Vietnam is amazing.

What you need to know before going on your trip. And I give my dos and don'ts of packing for the trip.

What you need to know before going on your trip. And I give my dos and don'ts of packing for the trip.

This week, I’m recording from Mallorca, Spain.  I’m not ready to do a full episode on this great place, so I wanted to address the top question I hear when we talk about our trip:  how did you pack?

The first half of the show is all about some of the nuts and bolts of preparing to leave the country, from insurance, to visa planning, to transportation planning itself.

Then, I break down the things we packed that were brilliant, contrasted with the things I packed that were foolish.

And in bloopers, we were finally hit by petty crime!

This week I’m in Valencia, Spain!  This town boasts more than 300 sunny days per year, has tons of arts, architecture, and unique Spanish culture, and is well-worth checking out.

We went to the largest aquarium in Europe called the Centro Aquitico and were impressed.  We also explored various markets, parks, and placas where locals and tourists relax and enjoy life. I review the beach, the museum of science, as well as the restaurant and drinking culture of this city.

This is our final country on the trip, and we’re just soaking in this great country and enjoying the final moments of our trip.  Thank you for being a part of this special project.  We’re not done yet. Also, I admit to paying WAY too much for baklava in the Istanbul airport.

The headlines segment is now a separate show!  https://open.spotify.com/episode/6uMrdNRuPwBuJrqn4kRXvf?si=YZE3FD9-Sxuj4O2jUkFu9A

First this week is a trip down memory lane to our London summer trip in 2022.  This city is packed with museums, arts, pubs, and beer (my favorite as you know).  With a bit of advanced planning, you can get the true London ambiance without the huge pricetag.  This week I’ll include some budget tips on transportation, lodging, and what to do here with your kids.

Then, I go to Mont St. Michel.  This is the destination I didn’t expect to like as much as I did.  There is a specific way I recommend doing this site.  Stay tuned to hear our two-day itinerary, and check out this episode of Join Us In France I did all about our France trip.

Westerners need all the help they can get when traveling to this majority Muslim country.  In this episode, I cover the basics to get you ready for a trip to Turkey.

We first will cover the food, from Adana Kebabs, to Lamuchans, to Gozlemes, and what are Pides?  Are mezzelers a good idea?

Then the drinking culture.  These people are crazy about their black “Turk Cay” (pronounced “Chai”).  Alcohol is consumed sparingly here, but we cover the basics:  Beer, wine, Raki, of course.

Driving in Turkey is pretty easy, but there are some pitfalls and things you should know just like driving in any foreign country.

What is the tipping culture?  Public transportation?  What are the best places to visit?  Is communication a problem?  We will cover it all this week, plus a bonus point on the safety of Turkey in lieu of Bloopers.

The headlines segment is now a separate show!  https://open.spotify.com/episode/6uMrdNRuPwBuJrqn4kRXvf?si=YZE3FD9-Sxuj4O2jUkFu9A

This week’s throwback episode is a D-day commemoration.  On June 6, 1944, the Allies stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, and started the six-week Battle of Normandy.  We now have so many freedoms thanks to these efforts, and nowhere is this more appreciated than this part of France.  Join us for WTD’s remembrance.

Plus, I talk more about Prague, Czech Republic, an enjoyable city.  My recent episode on this trip received positive feedback so I decided to dig further into the planning that should go into a trip to this city.

Italy Throwback - Naples, Capri, Cinque Terre vs. Amalfi Coast

This week I relived our Italy trip. I'll go back over the stop in Naples, the quick boat to Capri, and why the pinnacle of human existence is jogging on this island.

Plus, I reveal my preference: Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre.

This week's Blooper really hurts. If you haven't noticed yet, you'll know for sure now that I'm a true dunce when it comes to travel.

This week I am in Dalyan, Turkey.  This area is contains stunning natural beauty.  It should be in your sights if you plan to travel to the West Coast of Turkey.

We did a boat trip to several coves and felt at home snorkeling in the Mediterranean ocean. We watched turtles swimming from our riverside after-dinner spot. We soaked in ancient mud baths. We, of course, drank lots of Raki.

There are numerous cove beaches reachable by car. Check out my wife's Instagram account to learn more about these spots.

Plus, in Bloopers, I get a Turkish haircut, complete with the "fire treatment." This was actually on my bucketlist.

The headlines segment is now a separate show!  https://open.spotify.com/episode/6uMrdNRuPwBuJrqn4kRXvf?si=YZE3FD9-Sxuj4O2jUkFu9A

This week I am in Datça, Turkey.  This is a great beach town on the Mediterranean Sea.  It should be in your sights if you plan to travel to the West Coast of Turkey.

I’ll talk about our favorite beach, Kargi.  The water here is so salty it shows on your skin, yet it’s very clear and good for snorkeling.

Eating in town means inevitably getting fresh grilled fish.  Some of our choices are the Kumluk Cafe and Emik Balik. There are numerous fast food and budget friendly restaurants.

Our favorites are Serin Bahçe Restaurant and Dunya Doner (chain but very good).

When you are in town, let the rhythm of the beach life take over, and enjoy the local wines and almond products.

Take a trip to the Knidos point for Greek history and a lighthouse hike.

WTD has a scary moment while jogging, and the family rubs elbows with the locals at a tea house while playing the local past time.

Turkey #1 - Ephesus and Parmukkale

Turkey #1 - Ephesus and Parmukkale

In my first episode from Turkey, I describe getting a rental car at the medium-sized Izmir airport.  There are mixed opinions out there about whether to rent a car in Turkey, but I will put you at ease.  They drive on the right side for Americans, so what could go wrong?

Our first stop was Selçuk.  This is a manageable town that serves as the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus.  If you are interested in history, you will love this site as well as nearby Temple of Athena, St. John’s Basilica, and Byzantine fort.

Then we headed to Parmukkale, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Country.  I was somewhat underwhelmed by the condition of Parmukkale, as it looked nothing like all the flashy brochures I’d seen over the years.  The Cleopatra Antique Pools was a highlight of the area for me.

Finally, WTD commits a serious blooper by losing the car!  Also in this episode is a discussion of Turkish food and drinks.

If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service.  Click on the link below to find out more and buy some Euros or other currency.  When you need the Euros for that next trip, they’ll be there, and you’ve bought when the dollar was strong.

Prague Travel Guide - Old Town and Beyond

Prague Travel Guide - Old Town and Beyond

New Headlines Show! The headlines segment is now a separate show.

In this week's episode, I discussed some of the neighborhoods beyond the usual tourist circuit. If you have a week in Prague, this episode is perfect for you. I break down the nuts and bolts of getting from Vaclav Havel Airport to downtown Prague -- cheaply. Then, I give recommendations on outlying neighborhoods where your budget will go further for lodging and food.

Recommendations include: Vinohrady, Karlin, Zizkov, and Holesovice. We stayed in Vinohrady at Royal Apartment Legerova. We dined three times with the kids at Parlament restaurant. We took in classical music at the Klementium in Old Town. I actually didn't discuss this concert in the show, but I highly recommend it, even with kids.

Finally, WTD signs off from the last CZ stop in Krumlov. You can hear the tears hitting his microphone as he says goodbye to this country. :(

Czech Beer Episode

This week WTD talks about one of his favorite topics: BEER. Specifically, beer in the Czech Republic, where beer drinking is a religion. We'll run down some things to look for and how to not look like so much of a tourist when you are ordering beer, and what to expect overall with your Czech beer tour.

Vienna, Austria - This city of fine art and classical music is a great destination for traveling families

Vienna, Austria - This city of fine art and classical music is a great destination for traveling families

If you’ve ever wondered whether Vienna is a good family spot, this episode is for you.  We have two young children and love this city.  It is very manageable and peaceful (likely due to the classical music and art scene that envelopes the atmosphere).

In today’s episode, we discuss our museum stops:  Schonbrunn Palace, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Museum of Natural History, and Haus der Musik.

WTD starts off the show with a recap of where we are in the Ukraine war, and why Westerners need to stay focused.  There may not be many good outs here.

Finally, WTD once made fun of those who ship gear back to the states on their trips.  But he eats humble pie this time and talks about his experience shipping gear back.  Everyone has their breaking point, and he finally hit his.

Italy #5 - Venice

Italy #5 - Venice

This week’s show is about a city that needs no introduction; Venice, Italy.  This is a city that’s great for couples because of how romantic it is, but what if you have the gremlins in tow?  Relax, you can still have a memorable time!

There are countless museums, restaurants, and historical sites to please the family.  We spent a morning at the Leonardo da Vinci museum.  The kids were entertained by an interactive invention exhibit, white the parents learned more about the Codices that held his notes.

A Ciccheti crawl should be on everyone's agenda.  These are Venice’s answer to the tapa, with variations on quality and price from place to place so choose wisely.  In the bloopers section WTD will give some tips on how to choose.

Of course the headlines are dominated by Trump’s indictment.  WTD puts on his lawyer hat to discuss the grand jury process and how he sees the case playing out.  It might be dismissed quickly by the Judge, or this could be big trouble for orange man.

If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service.  Click on the link below to find out more and buy some Euros or other currency.  When you need the Euros for that next trip, they’ll be there, and you’ve bought when the dollar was strong.

Italy #4 - Cinque Terre, Italy Dos and Don'ts

Italy #4 - Cinque Terre, Italy Dos and Don'ts

The family spends a week in Cinque Terre.  This region is great for the outdoorsy types, with plenty of long hikes to fill up the days, and good snacks and food for when everyone gets hungry.

Don’t forget to try the pesto and the other local snack that WTD raves about.

This week’s headlines include the slide of the US Dollar continuing while WTD weeps.  The banking news seems to have simmered down for the time being, but is it the tip of the iceberg?

Finally, WTD learns a tough lesson about sitting down at a café rather than getting the food to go.  This one hurts.

Italy #3 - Rome Highlights

Italy #3 - Rome Highlights

I just spent five days in Rome with my family. This city just never gets old. Everywhere you turn there is some building, or Roman ruin, or cool restaurant worth checking out. If you are thinking of traveling to Rome with your kids, check out this episode where I dive into how to make the site-seeing fun for the whole family.
In the bloopers section, find out how we almost missed our train to Cinque Terre. Hint: an important event closed down all public transport in the city on our departure day.
In headlines, we talk more about the bank failures and whether this will be the black swan we’ve been looking for. WTD thinks there won’t be much of a discernable collapse in the sense many are predicting.
If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service. Italy #2 - Pompeii and Capri Daytrips

Italy #2 - Pompeii and Capri Daytrips

This week I’ll give you a report on our daytrips to Pompeii and the Island of Capri. Both of these destinations come highly recommended. We narrowly avoided being ripped off initially at the Pompeii gates.
The trip to Capri was a budget buster, but sometimes that’s what bucket list travel is all about.
Plus, headlines include the Silicon Valley bank meltdown and whether WTD thinks this is the tip of the iceberg for the US economy.
And WTD’s daughter gives a report on what kids actually think of the site of Pompeii. Is it as boring as history usually is?

Italy #1 - Naples, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast

Italy #1 - Naples, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast

This week I went to Naples, Italy with the family.  This city has always been fascinating to me because people rarely go there if they also have Rome on the docket.  Furthermore, if they do go, it’s only for a night before going to the Amalfi Coast.  Well we had four nights here, and I was surprised at how much we enjoyed it.

Then, we went to our homebase in Sorrento, which is not as ritzy as some nearby Amalfi Coast towns.  Sorrento is livable, with nice people and decent restaurants.  It’s within shouting distance of Pompeii and Vesuvius.

We also took a day trip to Positano; the true postcard town on the Amalfi.  It is the end of offseason, and very sleepy there, yet we got to experience the scenery and the magic that make Positano the town to target in this region.

Our headlines section is very slow, but there’s never been a better time to get to Italy.  It’s a must for any traveler from the states.  Thanks for listening!

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

This week, World Travel Dad reports on Dubai.  Activities covered in the trip report are Legoland, Kidzania, Dubai Mall, La Mer Beach, and the Burj Khalifa.

First he will delve into recent political news regarding the train derailment in Ohio, and the announcement of another Republican challenge for president to Donald Trump.

Finally, in our first bloopers segment, WTD talks about two ways he’s been ripped off recently and how you can avoid this fate!

Vietnam #3 - Hanoi Myth vs. Reality

Vietnam #3 - Hanoi Myth vs. Reality

Today’s headline rundown includes shooting down balloons with missiles, Super Bowl and the Grammys, and a comment on the Phillips curve yet again.

World Travel Dad is galled that Jerome Powell is trying to put people out of work.  How would you feel if he was trying to eliminate your job?

WTD doesn’t like Trevor Noah’s comedic delivery, but gives the joke writers props.

In the second part of the show, he will discuss the myth versus reality of the city of Hanoi.  Are the people really grumpy?  How is the weather and the pollution?  Is it a fun city for families?

If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service.  Click on the link below to find out more and buy some Euros or other currency.  When you need the Euros for that next trip, they’ll be there, and you’ve bought when the dollar was strong.

Vietnam #2 - Hoi An Travel Guide

Vietnam #2 - Hoi An Travel Guide

At the top of the show, WTD wades into cultural and political deep waters while discussing the Super Bowl.  He doesn’t understand why the New York Times turns everything into a racial topic.  Are there really two black QBs squaring off in this year’s big game, and should we care?

Also, the global economy may be nearing a recession, and the US fourth quarter GDP print is not all it’s cracked up to be when you look at the final month of December.

Finally, the do’s and don’ts of Hoi An, Vietnam.  This is a great way to start a trip to Vietnam, as the town has the tourism game completely dialed in, and you won’t get any cultural shocks.  There are plenty of mini doses of cultural and historical significance that is sure to please the entire family.

A quick note on the book about Vietnam his dad finally completed before his death.  James’s brother found all the materials, and they are going to try and publish what is sure to be a very interesting book.

John R. Olsen book synopsis link.

Vietnam #1 - Comparisons Between Bali, Thailand and Vietnam

This week, World Travel Dad addresses the recent blow to Sweden’s ascension to NATO.  He devolves into a discussion on world religion and why Westerners are afraid of Islam.

After a few days in Vietnam, WTD gives his cost rankings for the popular destinations of Bali, Thailand, and Vietnam. He discusses why he is concerned about how much he pays for a beer, and how eating out for every meal can be a death by a thousand cuts to your budget.

If you are thinking of World Schooling, he has some thoughts for your budget and how to approach the process of meeting up with other families while on the road.

Thailand #7 - Chiang Mai Wrap Up

Thailand #7 - Chiang Mai Wrap Up

In what is likely to be the final Thailand Episode, World Travel Dad does the “do’s and don’ts” of Chiang Mai.
With global inflation still a topic, WTD goes through some of the market scenarios coming into 2023 based on the people he listens to and follows. He only trusts Peter Boockvar because he sounds like his friend from Arizona, John.
China is reopening, and he has a take on how we should feel. Also, he and his son have been reviewing world safety rankings, and Thailand a bit low.
If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service. He has been using it in the global arbitrage game to great success. Thailand #6 - Elephant Nature Park

At the top of the show, WTD discusses the recent collapse in the US dollar and how sad he is.  Plus, can we predict where the USD will be by next Fall when people in the US might be going to Europe?

He has a take on the new Harry memoir.  And finally, he’ll weigh in on recent Chinese travel restrictions and why these appear not to be based in the science.

Then, the family takes an two day trip to the Elephant Nature Park.  He’ll discuss the food, accommodations, daily activities, and the overall price of this getaway.

Thailand #5 - Chiang Mai

Thailand #5 - Chiang Mai

This week, World Travel Dad recalls the great New Year’s weekend they celebrated in Phuket.  The family has moved onto Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.  He’ll share some initial thoughts about how this is a family destination.

Starting off with headlines, he discusses the NFL violence issue, the S & P has rated Southeast Asia as the only macroeconomic hotspot for 2023.

Thanks for joining us for our first Chiang Mai episode, and first of the New Year!

Thailand #4 - Kata Noi New Year's

Thailand #4 - Kata Noi New Year's

Starts off with headlines, though nothing is usually going on this time of year.  The Fed interest rates is still a good cocktail party discussion topic.

This week, World Travel Dad is working while most podcasts take the week off!  He’ll give a run down of the cooking class we did two days before Christmas.  The family cooked various curries, pad thai and dessert dishes.

Then we’ll run down how Christmas went, how meeting friends has gone so far, and what the plan is for New Year’s in Kata Noi, our little corner of paradise.

Finally, WTD gives his top five tips for good physical and mental health on any length vacation.

If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service.  He has been using it in the global arbitrage game to great success.  You can use this service even if you just stay in the US.  When you need the Euros for that next trip, they’ll be there, and you’ve bought when the dollar was strong.

Thailand #3 - Christmas in Phuket

Thailand #3 - Christmas in Phuket

It’s Christmas week on the World Travel Dad show. At the top of the show, he goes over the SBF story a bit more, but frankly is sick of it and wants to see more juicy details before commenting too much.
Then, he gives a hard-hitting soccer take on the World Cup Final. His French team lost and it’s a tough one to stomach. He thinks Mbappe’s second goal is getting overlooked, and he criticizes Soccer’s penalty rule.
Finally, a short do’s and don’ts for Phuket, followed by a report on Kata Noi where the family is staying.
Always nostalgic, World Travel Dad discusses some of his family’s favorite Christmas movies, and shares plans for their big Thai feast over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Thailand #2 - Koh Phi Phi Le Daytrip

Thailand #2 - Koh Phi Phi Le Daytrip

This week’s headlines: SBF still in the news, this time indicted in the Bahamas. WTD feels like that would be a tough way to end a trip to the Bahamas!
Brittney Griner is released, and WTD knows why. Also, he takes a shot at school teachers. Now he’s really getting unpopular!
The Family goes to Koh Phi Phi Le for a great snorkeling trip. WTD and his son see a small black tip reef shark, and WTD reminisces about the awful movie, The Beach, which was filmed on Phi Phi.
If you want to play the currency markets, but don’t want to open a foreign bank account, WTD highly recommends Wise service. He has been using it in the global arbitrage game to great success. Thanksgiving Break in Singapore!

Thanksgiving Break in Singapore!

WTD goes patriotic when he talks about Thanksgiving.  But is quick to acknowledge the low rank of US on corruption indexes.

https://www.transparency.org/en/cpi/2021.

The headline segment returns to the show, as WTD sounds off on Crypto and FTX.  He’s just grumpy that he missed the boat on BTC, but is laudatory on blockchain technology and oracle networks, whatever the heck those are.

Movie review of Top Gun.  WTD watches the movie on a plane with aviators on.  Plus, Singapore airline first experience, and Black Tap Burger for Thanksgiving Dinner.

Plus, a bonus daytrip review to Nusa Penida and a tour company recommendation.

The biggest roadblock may be renting out your house to strangers.  Yikes!!

Bali Episode #4 - Nusa Dua; Bonus Marriott Hotel Review

Bali Episode #4 - Nusa Dua; Bonus Marriott Hotel Review

After giving up the cubicle life, WTD is worried he’ll be TOO relaxed at the Balinese masseuse.  He is, however, harboring stress in a strange body part.

The family extends their visas at the immigration office.  Then they need a break and a three-night pamper sesh at the Marriott, Nusa Dua (on points yo).

WTD tries surfing a reef break and embarrasses himself.  He’s far enough away from shore that no one witnesses.  The family enjoys a dip in the warm Indian Ocean.

Bali #3 -- Family Trip to Ubud! Reviews on Family-Friendly Sights to Help you Plan the Trip.

Bali #3 -- Family Trip to Ubud! Reviews on Family-Friendly Sights to Help you Plan the Trip.

This week’s episode is all about what to do with the kids while you are in Ubud, Bali.  Whether you are a digital nomad with your family in tow, or just want to take the family for a few weeks in the Southern Hemisphere, we have a comprehensive rundown.

Take a dip at the pool and grab lunch at Good Day Ubud.

Weather you enter the Sacred Monkey Forest, or just walk by, it will be a hit with the kids, and you WILL see macaques.

WTD recommends visiting the Sacred Water Temple, Tirta Empul.  The family meets a cab driver who offers to take them to the temple, only to find out he served as a skilled de facto guide.  Don’t get ripped off, just take up the offer for a taxi driver to take you and explain all the rules.

Reviews on Green School and Wood School.

WTD flirts with veganism at Zest, Ubud.

Restock your travel books at the local library.  WTD geeks out over the tattered book covers.

Check out podcasts referenced:  Nomad Capitalist, and Rebel Capitalist.

Top Five Ways to Tell if you are Being Ripped Off at a Restaurant

Top Five Ways to Tell if you are Being Ripped Off at a Restaurant

This week World Travel Dad sounds off on restaurant rip offs, of which he has become an expert through experience.  Learn how to spot the overdone, gimmicky, waste of time restaurants before they spot you.

Sexual inuendo drinks, and the dreaded charcuterie board.

Coming up next week we're back to regular trip episodes, still from Bali.  This time we'll have a full rundown of kid-friendly Ubud, Bali.

This is the perfect place to bring your kids on a long holiday, so tune in.

Thanks for listening and please always subscribe, leave a review (only if five star, duh), and thank you to my Colorado friends for listening, Mike, Doug, Greg, Abra, and if I missed anyone let me know.  I didn't want to say your names in the show or you might accidentally be associated with this amateur drivel.
