Culture Crux

By Dr. James Runcorn

Dr. James Runcorn, a Pastor from Watersprings Church, provides "slices" from conversations he has with unbelievers, new believers, seasoned believers and everything in-between. Each episode of Culture Crux invites a new guest to share their level of faith, or lack thereof. The overall purpose is to equip the Body of Christ to engage the world with the Gospel message, through relational understanding and compassion; individual stories and journeys to understand, before being understood.

S3E1; Pastor Joe Stepp

S3E1; Pastor Joe Stepp

Welcome to Season 3 of Culture Crux with Dr. James Runcorn. Leading up to Season 3 Dr. Runcorn has interviewed people with a diversity of backgrounds, faiths, experiences, and hardships. Season 3 is not going to be any different. That's a fact! Dr. Runcorn is efficient, professional, friendly, and engaging with his guests.

On Episode 1 of Season 3 Dr. Runcorn sits down with Pastor Joe Stepp, who is a Watersprings High School Bible Instructor and an Associate Pastor of Watersprings Church. Pastor Joe's story is very intriguing and extremely powerful. He grew up in a single-parent home...not because of divorce but because his dad passed away when Joe was 2 years old. His family was left with many questions and little to no answers after that heart wrenching morning of discovery. Joe grew up loving sports, particularly football, and quickly learned that football gave him abilities to grow in, develop, and achieve something greater. He looked to the coaches, and other father-figures, in his life to help him understand his purpose. At the young age of 17 Joe gave his life to Jesus Christ, and his life has never been the same. Listen as Pastor Joe talks about his life growing up, his hardships, his heartaches, and most importantly his testimony of Jesus Christ. You won't hear Joe complain about anything in his life. He knows and understands what the blood of Jesus Christ did, has done, and will continue to do for his life, his family, and everyone else who proclaims Him as their Lord and Savior.

NOTE: The purpose of Culture Crux is not to judge or demean the guest because of their experiences or beliefs. Culture Crux is an open discussion, and it's purpose is to share in prayer as the discussion unfolds.

When you're engaged with others...hear their story, hear where they come from, and earnestly pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to assist you as you build your relationships.

S2E8; Gary

S2E8; Gary

Gary is an atheist. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, because as Christians we're commanded to love ALL people. Is it sad? Absolutely! Gary still has a lot of pain, hurt, and anger built up within himself. This is all evident in the things he says and how he explains his experiences with religion. Dr. Runcorn introduces yet another brave person who is willing to share their story. Gary didn't wake up one day and decide that he no longer believed in a God. There were steps that he took along his path of life that led him to where he is today. As with many of Dr. Runcorn's guests, Gary struggled with toxic shame and shame itself. There was abuse in his home growing up, both physical and sexual, and coming from a large Mormon family who lived in a dominant Catholic area was no easy task as a young kid. Once again, shame or embarrassment keeps us from sharing with others, especially by the use of a podcast, but Gary is willing to share through the pain.

Again, the purpose of Culture Crux is not to judge or demean the guest because of their experiences or beliefs. Culture Crux is an open discussion, and it's purpose is to share in prayer as the discussion unfolds. Parts of the discussion may be difficult to understand or listen to.

When you're engaged with others...hear their story, hear where they come from, and earnestly pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to assist you as you build your relationships.

S2E7; Kelly

S2E7; Kelly

Kelly steps out of his comfort zone in sharing his journey with Dr. Runcorn. We may sometimes think to ourselves that it's easier on us if we stay in the background and don't share our testimony or journey with others. In Kelly's case that rang very true for a long time. Sharing his journey and thoughts today is a really big step in Kelly's life. Shame or embarrassment keeps us from sharing with others, especially by the use of a podcast, but Kelly is getting stronger and stronger in his faith with Jesus Christ, and it shows.

LISTEN TO PART 1 OF 2 BEFORE LISTENING TO THIS EPISODE.

Pastor Shane continues the sharing of his walk to Gethsemane, and what it took for him to recognize and accept the true love of Jesus Christ. This is part 2 of 2 of Pastor Shane.

Is there a disconnect between the Gospel and the life that you live? Listen carefully as Dr. James Runcorn continues his visit with Pastor Shane.

S2E5; Pastor Shane - Part 1

S2E5; Pastor Shane - Part 1

Very few people have heard the full story of Pastor Shane and his walk to Gethsemane. Parts of his story are difficult to hear, but perhaps that's because many people, including myself, can relate to his emotions, struggles, alcoholism, abuse, etc., and not in that order or of any relevance to some. Pastor Shane had so much to bear and so much weight to carry at a younger age that he wasn't sure what to do with the stresses of life and the consequences of others. As he grew up and moved to Idaho from California it was supposed to be a re-start. A new life. A difference.

Is there a disconnect between the Gospel and the life that you live? Listen carefully as Dr. James Runcorn visits with Pastor Shane.

S2E4; Dr. James Runcorn: The Blog of A Forgiven Cheater

S2E4; Dr. James Runcorn: The Blog of A Forgiven Cheater

Dr. Runcorn, as host of Culture Crux, introduces his recently published book "The Blog of A Forgiven Cheater." All of us make mistakes and/or sin, and all of us have consequences for those mistakes and/or sin. The length of time that we must suffer from those consequences is not part of our choice to make a mistake and/or sin. When Dr. Runcorn approached his wife with everything he had been doing in sin, he could see the pain in her eyes from what he had just dumped on her. She looked at him and said, "I forgive you! Let's work through this." His wife wasn't saying in the least, "It's okay what you've done. I'm alright." No, she was full of hurt and forgave him for herself. It wasn't an easy trek for him to restore trust. It also wasn't an easy trek for her to allow him "back in". It took some time. Coming back from sin and/or mistakes or bad choices that we have made takes time, but it's worth it, as Dr. Runcorn explains going through emotions, heartache, frustration, self-doubt, toxic shame, and lack of self-love. It's evident the love Dr. Runcorn has for his wife and kids is worth everything!

When you're engaged with others...hear their story, hear where they come from, and earnestly pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to assist you as you build your relationships.

S2E3; Rhett - Part 2

S2E3; Rhett - Part 2

Part 2 of the conversation between Rhett, who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Dr. James Runcorn. There are times during the conversation in which Rhett apologizes for not being able to articulate his exact view point, but what's important to note is that Rhett does do very well at explaining his heart toward his faith in the LDS church. It's also important to note that it is imperative that Rhett is a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, and it's through the LDS faith that he chooses to live. This is in no way to shame Rhett, because that's not the purpose of Culture Crux, but it's wanting to understand Rhett and his faith.

Dr. James Runcorn respectively continues his conversation with Rhett so that you too can form your own opinion of what is important and what isn't when it comes to faith in Jesus Christ.

Again, the purpose of Culture Crux is not to judge or demean the guest because of their experiences or beliefs. Culture Crux is an open discussion, and it's purpose is to share in prayer as the discussion unfolds. Parts of the discussion may be difficult to understand or listen to.

S2E2; Rhett - Part 1

S2E2; Rhett - Part 1

Rhett is a member of the LDS Church, or known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Dr. Runcorn creates a safe environment for him and Rhett to have a conversation about who and what the LDS are. Some of the questions from Dr. Runcorn are bold, and Rhett is candid in his responses. Knowing a little, and having run-ins with the "Mormons", helps Dr. Runcorn know what questions to ask, but it also sparks curiosity in what Dr. Runcorn has witnessed or heard about the LDS. The Idaho Falls area is largely LDS, and Rhett was born and raised in the LDS faith. He doesn't know anything different. His position at EastIdahoNews.com includes reporting on Faith and Religion from around the region, so it was a great opportunity to have Rhett on the podcast to share his thoughts on the faith he belongs to.

The conversation went so well that Dr. Runcorn and Rhett decided to split the episode in two. This is Part 1 of their conversation.

S2E1; Dr. James Runcorn; What Is Culture Crux?

S2E1; Dr. James Runcorn; What Is Culture Crux?

Dr. Runcorn, as host of Culture Crux, introduces Season 2 and talks about the purpose and design of Culture Crux. Dr. Runcorn knows and understands that everyone has a story. Some people, especially those who hold a position of authority, a Pastor, an executive, or even a manager/supervisor may appear to have everything together in their life. The truth is, everybody has struggled at some point in their life to get where and what they are today. Season 2 is poised to be even better then the introductory season. Some guests from Season 1 will return to share more of their thoughts and story. Of course, there will be new guests and new discussions.

When you're engaged with others...hear their story, hear where they come from, and earnestly pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to assist you as you build your relationships.

Glenda

Glenda

Glenda's story is epic, as I would refer it as, because she's had decades of walking with Jesus. Although I refer Glenda's story as epic, it hasn't been glamorous in the least. Her dad past away before she was born and later she struggled with a husband who suffered from alcoholism, which you will hear that Jesus Christ saved him from that disease. Amongst the many challenges and heartaches of this life, Glenda was not complacent in her walk with God. Her desire in life was not to give the impression to others that she had it all together but rather the opposite. She wants nothing more than for people to see Jesus Christ in her eyes and life. Glenda is the upmost example of being Christ-like.

Dr. James Runcorn - His Story

Dr. James Runcorn - His Story

Pastor/Dr. James Runcorn tells his story. Dr. Runcorn, as host of Culture Crux, knows and understands that everyone has a story. Some people, especially those who hold a position of authority, a Pastor, an executive, or even a manager/supervisor may appear to have everything together in their life. The truth is, everybody has struggled at some point in their life to get where and what they are today. Some stories are topped with a cherry. Some stories have a shock and awe reaction. Some stories might've never taken off like the person had hoped. Regardless, the life stories of people are important because it helps to understand what they've been through and how they handled their trials and tribulations. Dr. Runcorn's telling of his story is so that the listener can further relate with and understand that he has a story too.

When you're engaged with others...hear their story, hear where they come from, and earnestly pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to assist you as you build your relationships.

Patrick

Patrick

Patrick Murphy; Discipleship Pastor from Christ Community Church in Idaho Falls, is a long-time friend of Dr. Runcorn and his family. Patrick and James sit down  in the studio as friends, former co-workers, current pastoral foes, brothers in Christ, and ministry partners to talk...about God. Patrick asks some questions of James, not of his faith or what he believes, because Patrick already knows James' faith. It's evident that these two brothers in Christ care about and cherish their friendship. Patrick and James have a discussion and have questions for one another, and in return their responses are perfect for Culture Crux!

Aiden

Aiden

What a powerful story Aiden has at the young age of 16. Is he Atheist? Does he identify himself as Atheist? What is an Atheist by definition?

Aiden is smart and he knows there was a man named Jesus on this earth, but who is this Jesus according to Aiden? Listen to Aiden's story as he describes his thought process and talks about how he investigated different philosophies before he ultimately decided what to believe in. It's impressive to note as well, that Aiden is not aggressive toward Christians. He lives in a Christian home. His parents are Christian. He isn't trying to convince anyone (friends or family) that he's right and they're wrong. Aiden chooses to believe what he believes because that's his research has indicated to him.

Andy

Andy

Spirituality was a big deal for Andy, but his growing up years and background were not conducive to what Andy believed was spirituality. Dr. Runcorn learns some things about Andy that he didn't fully know previously. Andy, just like all of us, is a child of God, and he knows and understands that, but Andy has allowed occurrences in his life to take over and question his faith in God. Andy knows what the presence of God feels like, especially because when Andy is in the mountains he recognizes His voice and that feeling all too familiar. Isn't it easy to decide whether we're believers or not? It should be, but Andy has some experiences that bring about doubt on his faith.

Gary/Podcast Producer

Gary/Podcast Producer

Dr. James Runcorn has a discussion with the producer of Culture Crux, Gary Austin. The two engage in a conversation of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Does following and believing in Jesus Christ make your life less stressful or less worrisome? Does your faith in Jesus Christ relent less earthly problems than someone who doesn't have faith or believe in Jesus Christ? Absolutely not!

Dan

Dan

Dan's story is intriguing. He's the husband of a previous guest, Shauna, and they've been married for 14 years. Listening to Dan's story is difficult to hear at times. He talks about authenticity and the idea of hypocrisy amongst family members and friends in a particular religious system. Who is God? What business does He have in my life? Dan's experiences growing up and in to adulthood sparked many questions about God. Are Dan's questions legit? Can you relate to his story, or does his story frustrate you? Listen carefully to Dan, and consider our own hearts.

Jennifer

Jennifer

Jennifer's faith journey is quite interesting. So interesting in fact, that this episode should be doubled in length.  Jennifer's knowledge of Mormonism and Christianity is impressive and extensive. She's open and honest with her thoughts and feelings on religion and where her faith currently stands. As with all of my guests, it's a great pleasure to sit down with Jennifer to listen and to learn her full story.

Mike

Mike

Mike's faith journey is heavy and deep. In fact, Dr. Runcorn indicates that the interview was somewhat difficult to get through at times. Mike's story doesn't make him any less a child of God. Mike, off air, proclaimed to Dr. Runcorn that Jesus Christ is his Savior and Lord, so that's the best part of Mike's story. He also had numerous people come into his life when he needed them most. He left home and lived on the streets at the very ripe age of 14 because of a rigid and rough home life. Later in Mike's life, at one of his lowest points, he decided that he would join the fellowship / church of whatever person or organization knocked on his door. Can you guess who came knocking? It was the Jehovah's Witnesses. Surprising? Not really, especially when considering that Mike was looking and searching for relationship. He struggled with relationships in his life, and he assumed that a religious relationship would be good. That also failed for Mike. A man who was searching for Jesus Christ found Him in his heart the whole time, but kept Him so far tucked away that Mike forgot what really mattered. Listen to Mike's story with an open heart. Maybe you'll relate to his story and maybe you won't, but hopefully you'll find that you are led to pray for Mike.

Shauna

Shauna

Shauna identifies as agnostic. What she has experienced is dark. It's heavy. Her experiences in life, like our own, shaped her view on scripture and any religious document. Shauna's background includes living a Latter-Day Saint (LDS) life, although everything the Mormons teach went against Shauna's own traumatic abuse and belief in God. She refuses to give credit to any of the LDS literature and/or material; Book Of Mormon, Pearl Of Great Price, and Doctorine & Covenants. Shauna is knowledgeable about the Bible, but does she believe ALL of God's Word contained in the Bible?

Shauna's experiences in life are real. She is real. She is honest. She is open and willing to share her story. Listen carefully as she describes her beliefs and experiences with God.

Drew

Drew had some pretty harsh experiences in his childhood. He was presented a foundation of absolute truth, which later crumbled. And when it crumbled it shook his world view. That shook his perspective of God.

Dr. James Runcorn describes his personal relationship with Drew and how much he respects Drew and his family.
