It’s pretty hard to argue that high volume training is an effective way to grow. Whether it be a high volume chest workout, high volume back workout, high volume arms workout (#pumpchasers), or a high volume shoulder workout, the evidence is clear - more volume typically means more progress. But, we want to be careful that we don’t always add sets to our sessions, at the expense of more load or more reps. Because in the training volume vs intensity discussion, intensity is critically important, too. So in the search for the optimal training volume for hypertrophy, let’s be aware of all the factors. It recently dawned on me (like yesterday, so this is very new) that when you're all charged up to knock out a low day with your diet, but you blunder your way through and make some mistakes, it hurts you in multiple ways. Not only do you not realize the physical progress you wanted to from the low day, but you still feel mentally fatigued from having been "ready" for the low day. And interestingly enough, this happens with high days, too...except it involves guilt and dissatisfaction. Ep #72: Frozen Yields
Dividends are a powerful thing, when it comes to the world of investing - especially long-term investing. A dividend is literally nothing more than a cash payment made from the company to you - the shareholder. As a result, the "yield" that you earn from the dividends is based on your purchase price in the stock, which is fixed. Thus, your dividend yield is "frozen". Actually, as I realized mid-segment, it's not frozen. It's not frozen at all. It's better than that...it's actually the exact opposite of a popsicle melting...whatever that is. For me? Simple. Brownies and Chocolate Chip Cookies. Sure, on a flexible diet, I COULD have these, if I wanted to, but I know better. If there were a 4th 'F' to the cube, it would probably be fiber. It ranks above family, food, friendship, or fun in its incredible awesomeness. If I survey the world around me through a Christian lens, one of the things I notice is that there are half a dozen, or so, common objections to the Christian faith. For example, Is the bible true? Can we really trust its content? Is Jesus really God? These are terrific questions, and they are important questions that I think you need a solid answer to, in order to build a strong foundation in your faith. Well, along those same lines, we address another one of the more common issues with Christianity. The issue is this: since Christians believe they alone have the 'answer', that will naturally breed feelings of superiority and outward acts of injustice. We've got a little fitness only episode today, and we're talking "poverty macros". I've seen many, many people who want to get in shape come right out of the chutes slashing their calories (and macros) down to "poverty" levels. If someone is just starting out, and doesn't know better, then this is understandable, as they might feel this is the only way forward. But, having spent so many years in the bodybuilding world, I've always seen a number of people who DO know better do the same thing - take their macros down to super low levels right from the start. Cut me a little slack today because it might sound like you've stepped into The Matrix, with 'knowing that you don't know', or 'not knowing that you know'. But, in all of my years in finance and as an educator, I actually view this as a big issue that plagues many passive investors. Specifically, they 'don't know that they don't know', which is not too dissimilar from thinking that 'they know'. As a result, they're simply not equipped to make the best decisions under duress. Ep #27: RPEs and Fatigue Management
RPE, or Rate of Perceived Exertion, has had a monumental impact on the effectiveness and sustainability of my training. It is something that I borrowed from the powerlifting community and only recently discovered in the last 3-5 years. Most of the first decade of my bodybuilding career was spent feeling like I HAD to take every set to failure, or it didn't really count. Knowing what I know now, I am fully convinced that this lead to very sub-optimal results. Have you ever felt like God could never use you? Ever felt like you're just so far from the mark of what God wants you to be that He would never even consider using you in some grand way? I know I have, and that's part of the reason I struggled to finally make the decision to include the faith element in F Cubed late, last year. But, if we actually look at biblical history, we see that God loves to use the weak and the humble for His master design. He fancies Himself on taking these "misfits" and turning them into heroes. Ep #19: Toggling the Variables: Training and Nutrition
If your focus is body recomposition, either in the form of fat loss or muscle gain, then the two variables at play will always be training and nutrition. However, I posit that the training variable should almost always be fixed at maximizing muscle growth, while it is the nutrition variable that will be manipulated to meet your goals. Even if your ultimate goal is fat loss, you'll want to train to build (or maintain) muscle to prevent excess metabolic slowdown, encourage your body to keep its precious muscle, and achieve the look you are most likely going for. Whoever that girl was that I recently found while doing a mindless scroll on the internet who coined the term, BLT, to refer to Bites, Licks, and Tastes, was a genius. This is pure brilliance! The thing is all those little nuggets of this or nibbles of that add up...sometimes quickly. I know I fall victim to too many BLTs all the time. Not surprisingly, when I reign those guys in and track them or avoid them altogether, my progress becomes consistent and predictable. Ep #15: If I Was a Beginner - Part One
If I was starting all over again in the world of fitness, and I was an absolute beginner, how would I approach training and nutrition? With nearly twenty years of experience in physical fitness and competitive bodybuilding, I would simplify the entire process. From a training standpoint, I would ditch any type of "bro" split, or anything that was overly complicated, and I would simply do a 3-day or 4-day per week split: Full Body or Upper Body/Lower Body. From a nutrition standpoint, I would invest the time and effort into tracking my nutrition for at least a month or so. During any lengthy battle of physique transformation, which is harder, the mental battle or the physical battle? My knee-jerk reaction, which I think most would agree with, is that on any given day, the mental battle is more challenging. However, drawing on my experience with competition prep, I suggested that the physical battle might actually be harder at two very distinct points - the beginning and the end.

Ep #12: FOMO and Faith
FOMO is real. And FOMO when it comes to faith might be the realest it gets. I know firsthand how it feels to wonder if going all in on Jesus might leave you feeling like you're "missing out". Make no mistake, I still struggle with this now - today. But the growth in my faith and my walk with God has revealed an important truth to me. The more you push towards Jesus, not only do you not miss out, but He unlocks doors in your heart you never even knew were there, let alone locked.

Everyone is always so focused on how much money they make. Everyone is so fixated on making more and more money that they so often forget one key thing: how much money you make doesn't matter...how much money you keep does. If you make a bunch of money, but you spend it all, then you won't move any closer to any of your financial goals. In today's society, with all the glitz and glamour on getting more stuff, saving money is no small feat - but it's the only way.

Ep #7: A Circular Approach to Applying the Gospel
Tonight, I'm shooting from the hip..! I recently made a discovery in my faith journey that lead me to viewing my day-to-day application of the gospel as a "circle" of sorts. It begins with the Word of God (although, as you'll hear in this episode, I didn't originally think it should start here.) You then submit your requests/dreams/aspirations to God, you do your best, you release yourself from any worry or anxiety over the outcome, and you finish by resubmitting that same prayer back to God. The re-submission part at the end was the piece of the puzzle that I just recently discovered, with the help of my wife, Autumn. Needless to say, it has had a powerful impact on me in a very short time, and it has helped to reshape how I view the "do your best" point on the circle.

In the spirit of starting off with a nice, easy warm-up set, we tackle the question, 'Is there really a chance that God doesn't exist?" Before we can ever ask ourselves if Christianity is the way, or if Jesus is really the answer, I think we first need to address this question. In doing so, I come at this with a whole lot of logic and a little bit of probabilities. Simply put, I'm baffled by anyone who looks at this life and concludes there is no God. To make my point, I use a few illustrations I picked up along the way and one personal experience that many of us will share.
