Budgeting: A Key Component of Investing

Budgeting: A Key Component of Investing

It's The Jamaica Stock Exchange & You Podcast, and I am your host, Heneka Watkis-Porter. Some financial moves require huge down payments at a time. Investing isn't necessarily one of those. You don't require to upfront a large sum to start. It requires that you budget for it, as it is necessary to achieve your financial goals in the time you want. Essentially, it is about paying yourself first but we all know it is easier said than done in the real world of bills and other expenses that seemingly pop up out of nowhere. To discuss is Kevin Hemans, Financial Solutions Advisor, CUMAX Wealth Management

Some of what we looked at were:

  • Reasons persons don't invest
  • How does debt impact investing?
  • Setting goals
  • CUMAX solutions for investing
  • Money mindset

The JSE's Caribbean Business Exchange

The JSE's Caribbean Business Exchange

The Jamaica Stock Exchange and You is brought to you by CUMAX Wealth Management, "making more possible."

Cable television is a system of delivering television programming to viewers via radio frequency signals transmitted through electrical cables; in more recent systems, light pulses through fibre-optic cables.

You might be wondering why I am opening up with this information about cable TV on the JSE's podcast. I have a good cause. The JSE's mission is to contribute to the growth and development of the territories where they conduct business, by facilitating the mobilization, exchange, and expansion of capital while providing a return on equity acceptable to their shareholders.

I know first-hand that the organization does nothing that is out of alignment with its vision and mission. Today, we will examine how the JSE's latest venture, the Caribbean Business Exchange, aligns with its mission and vision.

To tell us all about that is Andre Gooden, Business Development Manager at the JSE.

Some of what we looked at were:

  • What is the CBX?
  • How does the CBX align to the mission & vision of the JSE?
  • How will the CBX benefit investors?
  • What kind of content can we expect from the CBX?
  • How will the CBX be different from what already exists?

It's The Jamaica Stock Exchange & You Podcast, and I am your host, Heneka Watkis-Porter. The Jamaica Stock Exchange and You is brought to you by NCB Capital Markets.

Deciding to secure your financial well-being is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. You don’t have to be a financial expert to do it. You need to know a few basics, form a plan, and be ready to stick to it.

While there is no guarantee that you’ll make money from your investments, if you get the facts about saving and investing and follow through with an intelligent plan, you should be able to gain financial security over the years and enjoy the benefits of managing your money.

One critical part of the investment puzzle is an understanding of earnings season. We've invited Jamelia Jalaalwalikraam, Research Manager, NCB Capital Markets, to provide insight into what exactly is earnings season and why investors should care.

Inflation: Its Impact on Corporate Earning and Valuations

It's The Jamaica Stock Exchange & You Podcast, and I am your host, Heneka Watkis-Porter.

This episode of The Jamaica Stock Exchange and You is brought to you by NCB Capital Markets.  Inflation is a general increase in the prices of goods and services in an economy. When the general price level rises, each unit of currency buys fewer goods and services, which results in a corresponding reduction in the purchasing power of money. But how does inflation affect corporate earnings and valuations? Chivel Greenland,  Research Analyst at NCB Capital Markets, will explain.

Some of what we looked at were:

  • How can corporations do more than just catch up to inflation but beat it?

This week’s episode explores this with David Hall, Managing Director,  DC Consultants and Associates.

Some of what we looked at were:

Credit Ratings Made Simple

Credit Ratings Made Simple

At some point in the life of an individual, organization or government, they will need to borrow money to fund their projects. Lending agencies will want to ensure that they are creditworthy, which their credit ratings can help determine. A credit rating can be assigned to any entity that seeks to borrow, whether it be an individual, a corporation, a state or a sovereign government. Best Way to Deploy Raised Capital

Best Way to Deploy Raised Capital

Regardless of where you are in your life and business, at some point, you will need to raise capital. In the past, your go-to options perhaps were getting a bank loan or speaking to your rich great, great uncle or grandfather. In today’s era, compared with say 10 years ago, with many ways to raise capital, your options are limitless. With this ease of access comes the need for more intentionality with how to use this capital that you have raised. Capital deployment decisions rank high on the list of outcomes that boards and managements must oversee. Making this choice is never easy. What are some of the key principles to be considered for effective capital deployment? Well, to give us the answers we are looking for, Dr William Lawrence, a strategy consultant, Board Chairman of Jamaica Business Development Corporation and Chairman of the JSE e-Campus Academic Review Committee joins us to talk about factors owners and leadership teams need to remember when considering deploying capital for their organizations.

Some of what we looked at were:

  • Factors to be considered when we deploy capital
  • How do we raise capital?
  • Leveraging digital technologies in raising capital
  • Lean 6 Sigma process to remove waste

And lots more.

Jamaica & Ghana Unite: Possibilities for Investing in Africa

Jamaica & Ghana Unite: Possibilities for Investing in Africa

The West has tried to alter our psyche, to make us believe that Africa is uncivilized and should not be desired. The truth has been discovered. For some of us, we have long known that this was far from being a fact. While for others still, the time has come for us to reclaim what has been robbed from us, that is our longing for identity and a sense of connection to the Motherland. What better way to establish such a connection than through wealth building. Let's contemplate how the capital markets in the Caribbean and the continent of Africa might work together to create wealth for its people. We've invited Ekow Alfedzie, Managing Director, Ghana Stock Exchange, to engage us about what is happening in the Ghanian Market and how we might work together to achieve even greater success.

Some of what we looked at were:

  • How many listings are on the Ghana Stock Exchange?
  • Types of listed companies on the Ghana Stock Exchange?
  • How can Jamaicans or other Caribbean Nationals participate on the Ghanian Stock Exchange?
  • What would a collaboration between the Jamaica Stock Exchange and the Ghana Stock Exchange look like?

The Data Privacy Act

The Data Privacy Act

The rental of safety deposit boxes at banks and locks on filing cabinets at the office are clear indications that much premium has always been placed on data privacy. And it is not just businesses that need to be concerned about it. Individuals too have much at stake to protect themselves from the risks that can arise when they are breaches. With the onset of the pandemic which has seen a migration of the world to the online space, it has become even more critical for us to be intentional when conducting business particularly in the online space. In 2018 the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), came into full effect after being adopted in 2016. But exactly what is it and what does it do? We will find out this and more in this episode where I have invited Chukwuemeka Cameron, Podcaster/Attorney-at-Law/Founder, Design Privacy to share with.

Building Generational Wealth with Intentionality

Passing on any kind of asset from families down to their children or grandchildren, whether in the form of cash, investment funds, stocks and bonds, properties or even entire companies, that's generational wealth. Sounds easy right? Why then are there seemingly perpetual cycles of poverty amongst some families while others continue to thrive generation after generation? We've invited Able-Don Foote,  Principal Attorney-at-law of the Able Attorneys law firm and Founder of Astronomical Holdings Limited, a private investment vehicle, to talk about generational wealth.

Journey to IPO: The Spur Tree Spices Experience

From Handsome Tree in Demerara, Guyana, to Spur Tree, Jamaica hails a tenacious Jamaican who has had to show his passport and driver's license to convince skeptics of his nationality. He's had several stints in the restaurant business which gave him the confidence and the experience he needed to excel as a business owner. But prior to the success, he's had to move from one relative's house to another while doing cooking demonstrations, staying in motels and reserving left-overs served at breakfast for lunch and dinner, amidst other challenges, none of which has deterred him even when the going got tough. That is the story of the co-founder of Spur Tree Spices, Mohan Jagnarine.

Why Messages of Hope, Love and Peace are Important to the Development of Our Economy

Why Messages of Hope, Love and Peace are Important to the Development of Our Economy

Up until recent decades when behavioral economics has led to renewed attention to emotion and subjectivity, subjective approaches such as hope, peace and love were not seen as good fits when having dialogue about the economy. Rather, there was much more focus on rationality, self-interests and other objective benchmarks. The effects of hope are positive, ranging from longevity and health to innovation and well-being. But false hopes, disappointment, or possible manipulation of societal hope must be guarded against. Nevertheless, in these atypical times, we need a spirit of hope, love and peace to help us navigate our economic restoration. To help me explore the topic of “Why messages of hope, love and peace are importing the development of our economy,” is Dr Donald Rhodd, Love Changes Life.

Some of what we looked at were:

  • In these times when we have important things to focus on like GDP, finance, exchange rates etc to focus on, why is it important to spread messages of hope, love and peace?
  • What is the relationship of these principles to economic development?

And lots more.

The Role of Mental Health in Achieving Economic Wellness

The Role of Mental Health in Achieving Economic Wellness

According to psychiatrictimes.com.  "A new Lancet Commission report on mental health said that mental disorders are on the rise in every country in the world and will cost the global economy $16 trillion by 2030...“Mental health is often neglected and underfunded, even though nearly 2 billion people suffer from mental illness every year...As young people face the brunt of the global burden of mental illnesses, the report places great emphasis on experiences in childhood and adolescence, which shape life-long mental health."  Clearly, there is a cost to society when its citizenry isn't whole in all areas of their lives. Dr Donovan Thomas, Founder, Choose Life International joins me today to talk about "The Role of Mental Health in Achieving Economic Wellness."

Music as a Viable Means of Social Intervention

Music as a Viable Means of Social Intervention

In the words of Bob Marley, "One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain." We know that music has several benefits including improving mood, decreasing pain and anxiety, and facilitating opportunities for emotional expression. Over the years, countless research suggests that music is good for our physical and mental health in numerous ways. BUT does it also have the potential to be an effective and viable means of social intervention especially in areas of the inner-city? Well, to share insight is the Project Manager for the Agency for Inner-City Renewal (AIR), Dr Henley Morgan as we talk about Music as a viable means of social intervention.

The Value of Private Sector Support for the Social Sector

The Value of Private Sector Support for the Social Sector

Countries, companies and constituents all aspire to achieve development. Oftentimes, this comes at the expense of putting our future generations at risk. The question is, does development really occur if what we do doesn't leave the world better than we found it? Is it worth it if our actions leave our planet in distress? Does the end justify the means? Over the years, markets and socialism have been looked at as being mutually exclusive concepts.  In recent times, we have seen somewhat of a middle ground taking its place in the traditional market dichotomy.

The result is a sweet spot that takes into account social business, impact investing and now even social stock exchanges. Why is it necessary for the private sector to support the social sector?  We will find out in this episode. I have invited the Hon. Thalia Lyn, JSSE Brand Ambassador to talk about  the Value of Private Sector Support for the Social Sector.

Some of what we looked at were:

  • You are an Ambassador for the Jamaica Social Stock Exchange, what does this mean?

Bringing Cayman and Jamaica Stock Market Closer – Creating a Bigger Market for Investors

In a 2018 bloomberg.com article, it states, "It doesn’t take much investment to make a tiny market boom, and the total value of the 37 stocks in the main Jamaica index is less than $11 billion, smaller than the valuation of Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc."  But does size really matter and how can we work with our neighbours in ensuring that we create a bigger market for our investors? Jermaine Deans, Managing Director, JN Cayman is my guest today.

Preparing Your Stock Portfolio to Withstand Economic Shocks

Preparing Your Stock Portfolio to Withstand Economic Shocks

Have you been finding value in the information we've been sharing? Great, there is much more in store for you. Last week we looked at "Rationalizing your portfolio in a pandemic" where Shelly-Ann Morgan from Sagicor fed us with insight into what goes into rationalizing, evaluating and thoughts about diversification for your overall investment portfolio. History has shown us that every 10 years or so there is a financial crisis so we may as well brace ourselves to deal with that reality. Of course, there is nothing that could have prepared us for this global health crisis that has been plaguing us sinc 2020. In fact, it actually started in 2019. Hence the name COVID-19. This week we are zooming in on your stock portfolio as we explore the topic, "preparing your portfolio to withstand economic shocks." To take us through this discourse is Stockbroker, Investor & Businessman, who serves as VP – Investor Relations, GK Capital, Ryan Strachan.

Some of what we looked at were:

  • How would you describe this state the world is in from a financial standpoint?
  • What is the economic impact of COVID-19 specifically as it relates to stocks?
  • Let's talk about how to prepare our stock portfolios to withstand economic shocks?
  • How about diversification? Should we be looking outside the local stock market as we diversify our portfolio?

One of the main areas that has taken a huge hit from its wrath, is our finances. As an investor, no doubt you have had to take a good look at the asset classes you have within your portfolio as you contemplate the inevitable losses you would have observed in some categories. This week’s episode explores, "Rationalizing your Portfolio in a Pandemic" with Shelly-Ann Morgan, Manager, Investment Client Services, Sagicor.

Some of what we looked at were:

  • What is portfolio rationalization?
  • Given the season we are in globally, is it a time to add new ones to existing portfolios or reinvest into previous bets?
  • How do we map out our portfolios? Is it by sector, dividend paying, market cap, price to sales, p/e?
  • What are some stock screeners we can use to analyse our portfolio?

And lots more.
