Ep. 1 - A Nice Duck
Northanger Abbey was completed in the year 1803 by Jane austen, but was not actually published until 13 years later. At the beginning of the book, Austen includes a note that says
“the public are entreated to bear in mind that thirteen years have passed since it was finished, more since it was begun, and that during that period, places, manners, books, and opinions have undergone considerable changes.”
Much like Austen, we started recording the third season of this podcast over four months ago, but haven't published any of the episodes until now. Our audience is entreated to bear in mind that references to times of the year, current events, and current reads or wates may seem dated…in this digital age, 4 months might as well be 13 years…
WIth that said, we are pleased to announce that our third season will feature Northanger Abbey and this is the very first episode! We love to be on theme.
Join us in reading this delightful book, Jane Austen’s earliest completed novel. We’re so happy to be back.
This episode features chapters 1-2 in Northanger Abbey

Movie Night: Inchon! (1981) w/ Elgen Strait of Falling Out
It's a very culty movie night! This is a crossover episode with Falling Out with Elgen Strait, a podcast about leaving the Moonies and other cults, as told by the kids who grew up within them. In this episode we watch the movie Inchon! Which was a 1981 movie about the Korean War that was funded and produced by the Unification Church, the cult we all grew up in. It was a strange experience watching the film, but it was such a joy to record this episode together! We hope you enjoy, and we promise to get back to Jane Austen content soon.

Hot Goth Summer- Jane Eyre Part 1 w/ Abby Sayre
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a Jane Austen Podcast will eventually have a crossover Brontë episode...
Welcome back! How has your summer been? We’re taking a break from Jane Austen and having a Hot Goth Summer! Let’s get a little dark and broody with the Brontës. We’ve got our resident Brontë fan, Abby Sayre, who helps us break down the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. We also talk about the 2011 movie adaptation.
Revelations! Secrets! Terrible men! This episode has it all. This is the first part of a 2 part episode, so stay tuned!
Note:
At one point we talk about the racial dynamics in Jane Eyre, this was initially a longer discussion which we unfortunately had to cut down due to some messed up audio. In part of the segment that was cut we mention this article, and wanted to drop it here for you to read to give you more context to this discussion. It’s called “Reading Jane Eyre While Black” By Tyrese L. Coleman. It’s a great piece about the experience of reading historical romance as a Black woman. Ep. 16 - Viva Gretna Green
CONTENT WARNING and CORRECTIONS: In this episode we talk about child marriage in the United States. We mention that it is only banned in 4 states. However, it is actually banned in SIX states (meaning the minimum age is 18 with no exceptions): New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Delaware, New York, and Rhode Island. Seriously, go call your local representatives... Elizabeth gets some distressing news and Darcy offers her a glass of wine. Lydia has run off with Wickham, but maybe they are headed to Gretna Green? And we’re supposed to pretend that would be better? While everyone in the Bennet household deals with this shocking development, we talk about child marriages in the United States and how it reminds us of the marriage practices of the cult we were raised in.

The Gardiners and Elizabeth visit Pemberley. Mrs. Reynolds gives a tour and extols the many virtues of her employer. Mr. Darcy surprises everyone by coming home a day early and being extremely polite and agreeable.
We talk about the beauty of landscape and well appointed rooms, how to be a “nice guy”, the reverence of nature in art and literature, and a tangent about cult coverage in the media. Let us know if you’d be interested in a bonus episode just on cult media and content. We have thoughts!

Ep. 13 - Lydia Goes Down the Shore
Back at home, Elizabeth confides in Jane about what happened at Rosings. Mrs. Bennet, Kitty, and Lydia are distraught that the regiment is leaving and want to follow them to Brighton. Lydia’s dreams come true when she gets an invite from the Colonel's wife Mrs. Forester to accompany her to Brighton. Elizabeth gives Wickham the cold shoulder. Elizabeth reflects on her parents' marriage and how it affects the family. Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner take Elizabeth on vacation to Derbyshire and contemplate visiting Pemberley.
We talk about loveless marriages and consult a law article on the patterns of sexual predators. Small tangent on the Jersey Shore (the beaches, not the show). Also how do you pronounce Derbyshire??

Ep. 12 - Rev. Jane Austen, True Author of Heaven and Earth
CONTENT WARNING: Heads up, especially for any UC and ex-moonie listeners: This episode is pretty heavy on the cult content. We have a discussion about Sanctuary Church, a splinter cult of the main Unification Church. The discussion includes guns, violence against LGBTQ+, and alt-right ideology and conspiracy theories. If you’re not up for it, feel free to skip this episode or come back to it when you are fully resourced.
Here’s what happens on the Jane Austen end: Darcy and Col. Fitzwilliam have left the building. Elizabeth is still processing the aftermath of Darcy’s letter. Lady Catherine is still “wakadoodle”, Mr. Collins is still annoying. Elizabeth and Maria head back home and meet Lydia and Kitty at an inn on the way. Lydia does some shopping and fills us in on important gossip. Elizabeth is conflicted about how to relay what she’s learned about Wickham without revealing too much. We learn we’re all a little bit of a “Mary”

Ep. 9 - Darcy Fitzwilliam Darcy
Lizzy goes to visit Charlotte and Mr. Collins. We finally meet Lady Catherine De Bourgh and have some awkward dinners. Charlotte shows off her ingenious home design. Mr. Darcy makes a surprise visit with his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam. Laurel records in the middle of a thunderstorm which makes for some dramatic sound effects. Akina gets us off track by telling us a story about seeing a celebrity in LA. Other tangents include: inappropriate questions, wearing traditional Korean gowns, and the fallacy of “living for the sake of others.”

Ep. 8 - Stupid Men are the Only Ones Worth Knowing

EP. 7 - Get Out of My Library!
Mrs. Bennet needs some opium for her nerves (don’t we all). Mr. Collins is still the worst. Elizabeth gets an offer she CAN refuse. What would it be like to marry someone you hate? We’ve thought about it way more than we should have. There’s some real talk about what it was like to leave the cult and how it still affects us. Honestly, we wouldn’t blame you if you want to skip through these chapters and meet us on the other side. Shit gets real and it cannot be overstated: Mr. Collins is the worst.

Ep. 5 - In Her Soul a Prostitute
Mr. Collins comes to visit and he really hates novels. A handsome stranger gets in a staring contest with Darcy. Mary is an awkward teen. Akina shares some choice lines from Fordyce's sermons. We’re not quite over the white soup. Other tangents include the Oxford schooling model, clergy, Emily Dickenson, and dangerous novels.

Yer a Wizard, Darcy!
Two fandoms collide! We’re bringing the sorting hat to Netherfield and sorting all of the characters of Pride and Prejudice into Hogwarts houses. This episode is dedicated to the folks at The Quibbler Podcast, which was a huge inspiration for us starting our own podcast bookclub. Go check them out if you love Harry Potter (and sort of secretly Twilight too), we’re big fans!
There are spoilers here, adult language, Hufflepuff propaganda, and big disclaimers about why we are pro Harry Potter but anti J.K. Rowling. We’ll be back next week with new chapters, but enjoy this fun little tangent!

Ep. 4 - Soup Drunk
HEADS UP, CONTENT WARNING: at minute 41:00 we talk briefly about sexual assault and suicide. If you’d like to skip this part you can come back in at 43:57. Please take care of yourself.
We’re still here at Netherfield and starting to wear out our welcome. Jane is still sick, Darcy is uncomfortable, Lizzy is annoyed, and Caroline can’t wait to see her go. Akina shares a recipe for white soup that we WON’T be serving at our next party. Is Darcy awkward or is he actually a jerk? We have thoughts...but it’s mostly about the soup.
