David Turko, Creator & Writer of the Comedy/Drama Show, FAKES

David Turko, Creator & Writer of the Comedy/Drama Show, FAKES

Have you ever been scammed? So much of our world is full of fake news, fake people, and fake things. But who would have ever thought that the largest fake ID empire in North America could be invented by two teenage girls in West Vancouver, British Columbia?
That’s the theme of the show Fakes - an American-Canadian television comedy/drama series, which premiered in 2022 on CBC Gem in Canada and Netflix internationally.
The series stars Emilija Baranac and Jennifer Tong as Zoe and Rebecca and premiered September 1, 2022.
Each episode is portrayed from the perspective of one of the two young women, making use of the unreliable narrator technique as their respective viewpoints sometimes contradict each other. Richard Harmon, who plays the supporting character Tryst, highlighted this aspect of the show as a fun creative opportunity for him as an actor, because it allowed him to play more than one variation on the character, based on the differing views of his character in each of the main characters' perspectives, instead of having to maintain a single consistent characterization.
The cast also includes Eric Bempong, Wern Lee, Matreya Scarrwener, Lauren K. Robek, Dylan Sloane, Mya Lowe, Ryan Mah, Emily Leung, Cindy Piper, Devon Slack, Oliver Rice, Debbie Podowski, Roraigh Falkner, Devon Alexander and Toby Hargrave.
The show was nominated for Best Comedy and Best Picture Editing in a Children's or Youth Program or Series. David Turko, creator, and writer and I met on the red carpet at this year’s Canadian Screen Actors Awards where I interviewed him about the challenges of writing comedy and what’s next for him.

Racism in Canada: Canadian Screen Awards Interview with Actor & Filmmaker, Anthony Shim: Riceboy Sleeps

Racism in Canada: Canadian Screen Awards Interview with Actor & Filmmaker, Anthony Shim: Riceboy Sleeps

It’s something we don’t like to speak or think of happening in Canada – a country that prides itself on welcoming immigrants and embracing cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity and differences Yet, many minorities contend with racism and intolerance every day. Perhaps, you are one of those people.

In Riceboy Sleeps, Korean/Canadian Actor, Filmmaker, Writer and Producer, Anthony Shim, addresses these very issues; unlike others who have recalled the trauma of immigrating to this country in their films.

Winner of Best Original Screenplay at this year’s Canadian Screen Awards, Riceboy Sleeps is a 2022 Canadian drama that Shim also edited and directed.

Based in part on his own childhood, the film centers on So-Young (Choi Seung-yoon), a Korean immigrant single mother raising her teenage son Dong-Hyun (Ethan Hwang) after losing her husband and moving to Canada in the 1990’s to give him a better life.

In Canada, they fight for acceptance and respect. Dong-hyun is brutally bullied by his classmates at school, and he isn’t helped by the timid, distinctly Canadian racism of his teacher and principal, who consider the family “troublesome.” At work, So-young battles loneliness and racist and sexist comments. As they negotiate with their separate circumstances, the rift between mother and son grows. Unwelcome news sparks an unplanned return to South Korea — and the in-laws So-young hasn’t spoken to in many years — but might open the possibility of mutual understanding.

Shim’s deep engagement with his subjects sparks profound, affecting revelations. So-young’s joyride in a convertible heartbreakingly underscores the emotional weight of dealing with life in a new country and raising a headstrong child alone. An offhand remark in class that ends in a fight shows how tightly wound and ill at ease Dong-hyun is — even as a teenager.

Throughout the film, Shim expertly balances the very different perspectives of a boy and his mother, poignantly capturing his loneliness and frustration, her isolation, and sacrifices.

It premiered in the Platform Prize program at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, and was named the winner of the program's award. It had its international premiere at the 27th Busan International Film Festival in October 2022.

I met up with Shim on the red carpet at The 2023 Canadian Screen Awards to discuss the message he wants audiences to take away from this movie.

Art & Fashion from The One Of A Kind Spring Show Toronto, featuring Multi Award winning Artist Morgan Jones

Regardless of how you define it, art is something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful, expressing important ideas or feelings. It’s interpretive, surrounding our homes, offices, streets, and cities, and thus, a significant part of our lives. While covering The One Of A Kind Spring Show Toronto Ladies Night as accredited media, I met Mixed Media Toronto-based Artist, Morgan Jones. His unique tea party complete with his ballerina model and work immediately caught my eye. I just had to interview him! We talked about his former career as Director of Sales for a large consumer electronics company, how he became a self-taught full-time artist, and why. How he’s inspired by the casual observation of people and life around him, and how his work is constantly evolving. The multi-step process he uses to create his art, his keen eye for texture and composition, coupled with a whimsical flare, Morgan creates works that are aesthetically engaging while also evoking a visceral response in the viewer.

Abuse & Codependency: Alice, Darling, Starring Anna Kendrick; Live from TIFF Red Carpet Premiere

Abuse & Codependency: Alice, Darling, Starring Anna Kendrick; Live from TIFF Red Carpet Premiere

Have you stayed longer than you should have in an abusive relationship due to codependency?  Do you recall being anxious all the time without being sure why?

Filmed in Canada, Alice, Darling, Oscar-Nominated actress, Anna Kendrick (“Alice”) captures the anxious psychology of a woman in an abusive relationship as her friends try to reconnect with her while on a cottage getaway.

When Alice is invited on a cottage trip to celebrate her friend’s birthday, she feels like she has to lie to her charming and successful boyfriend, Simon (Charlie Carrick), telling him that it’s a very important business trip.

Her longtime friends, played by Kaniehtiio Horn (Letterkenny) and Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country) want Alice to enjoy their time together, but she just doesn’t seem present. With Simon continuously texting her, it becomes clear that she’s being closely monitored by him and her phone turns into an overbearing conduit for emotional abuse. Once they realize what’s happening, Alice’s friends try to convince her that her relationship isn’t normal, but she continues to doubt herself, constantly modulating where she goes or what she eats, unable to disconnect from Simon, even though she knows she’s unhappy. As the weekend progresses, not only their friendship hangs in the balance, but also Alice’s safety. The women become entangled in a psychological tug-of-war with Simon, who continues his attempts at excising Alice from those closest to her.

Written by Alanna Francis, returning to TIFF 2022 after 2019’s The Rest of Us, and intelligently realized by Mary Nighy, Alice, Darling captures the apprehension and dread that haunt victims of domestic abuse. Nighy’s direction puts particular focus on the little details that serve as warning signs and, coupled with a meticulous performance from Kendrick, she creates a tense atmosphere that serves as a unique portrait of psychological manipulation and one young woman’s effort to overcome it with the support of her friends.

As accredited media, I was at their TIFF 2022 red carpet premier to talk to Nighy, Noah Segal (co-president at Elevation Pictures Corp), Kendrick (who in part accepted this role after being in her own abusive relationship for over 6 years), Francis, and Carrick about their roles, the importance of bringing this story to the big screen, and lots more!

Fighting for Who You Are & What You Believe In - The Movie Sidney documenting the late, great Sidney Poitier.

Fighting for Who You Are & What You Believe In - The Movie Sidney documenting the late, great Sidney Poitier.

Whether you marched in the civil rights movement, personally experience, or know a visible minority who continues to experience racism in our society today (sadly, incidents of crimes against humanity, discrimination and racism are still reported regularly), Sidney is a documentary portrait of the late, great Sidney Poitier. Produced by Oprah Winfrey & Derik and directed by Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang, Marshall), this piece showcases his films, life story, and litany of accomplishments as an artist and activist who forever changed what it means to be Black in America.

Poitier’s own words provide the narration of his life. Woven together is a rich mix of archive footage and contemporary interviews with a stellar group of interview subjects — from the late cultural critic Greg Tate to Halle Berry, Denzel Washington to Spike Lee, to Barbra Streisand, and Oprah.

Poitier’s contemporaries and the holders of his legacy detail just how extraordinary his rise was, from early failure at the American Negro Theater to Oscar-nominated roles in films like The Defiant Ones, to becoming the living, big-screen embodiment of America’s hopes for racial justice.

Poitier’s rise to stardom occurred in tandem with his commitment to social change, marching for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., and helping to usher Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, a milestone in portraying Black American experience, from Broadway to the big screen.

Watching signature scenes from his films, getting a glimpse of rare footage from his life beyond Hollywood, and seeing how pivotal his life and example has been for so many of today’s icons, it’s clear that there never was and never can be a figure quite like Sidney Poitier.

The movie premiered at TIFF 2022. I was there as accredited media working the red carpet. It was an honor to speak with Reginald, and see in-person Sidney’s wife & daughters, Oprah, Tyler Perry, and Gayle King relay the power and impact of Sidney Potier, who paved the way for them.

With Wonder - A Love Letter to God Asking the Question: Can You be a Christian and Queer?

Born out of Director Sharon Lewis’s own muted struggle with not fitting into neat racial/Queer/Christian boxes, With Wonder takes an intimate look at the journey of members of the Queer, Christian community of colour and their attempts to answer the question: Can you be both Christian and Queer?

This feature length documentary, features the diverse stories of several members of the LGBTQI+ community, including high profile queer activists and Queer clerics, in places like Jamaica, New York, London, and Los Angeles. They each have their own unique ways of amplifying their voices and finding their way back to spiritual health, despite the shaming tactics of some Christian institutions.

With Wonder is a love letter to God from the LGBTQI+ community of colour. Heartfelt and honest, With Wonder delves into what for some might be uncomfortable conversations.

In this episode, I sit down with Courtney Panchan, Distribution Manager of Black Market Releasing (the film company releasing With Wonder) to talk about how the QPOC people in the film came to terms and come out the other side, living their truth with the power of who they are and still serving God and how they can champion youth across Canada & the US who are looking to be accepted for their truth.

Danielle Kaplan, Author of the Book I Married A Thrill-Seeker: A Cautious Wife’s Memoir of Her Husband’s Risk-Taking and Their Long Road to Recovery

As we continue to honor Valentine’s Day and all things LOVE, this week’s episode features the amazing story in first-time author, Danielle Kaplan’s book, I Married A Thrill-Seeker: A Cautious Wife’s Memoir of Her Husband’s Risk-Taking and Their Long Road to Recovery. For fans of memories of trauma and recovery and for anyone living and loving a risk-taker, comes one man’s struggle to overcome a one percent chance at survival as told through the eyes of his wife, his high school sweetheart, who was his greatest ally. The book recalls the tale of Danielle’s type-A and adrenaline-junkie husband, Stephen Kaplan — former CFO and CEO of Deciem Beauty Group — as he sets off to take one last solo road trip on his motorcycle, from Toronto, Ontario to near Fairbanks, Alaska. Danielle knows it’s the last ‘adrenaline rush’ trip he’ll take on the bike–he’s promised to give it up for good.

On the other hand, Steve expected to make it home with no drama, no unnecessary risks, just the freedom of the open road and the wind on his face. But after hitting a pothole while driving at a high speed in rain at dusk, it’s the ending neither of them dreamed of when he crashes on a remote highway in the Yukon, he can’t move, and its hours before he can receive medical treatment.

In this candid interview, Danielle and I sat down to discuss how this event changed her, her husband’s and her children’s lives in an instant, how she came to terms with Steve’s adrenaline-junkie antics & found an appreciation for it amidst having to make unbearable decisions, experiencing miraculous moments, how as a former speech pathologist she became her husband’s greatest advocate - fighting by his side the entire time, through every step forward and step back as Steve regained his health and lots more in what can only be described as a true testament of luck, love, and incredible fortitude given Steve’s injuries that left him with a less than one percent survival rate.

Behind-the-Scenes at TIFF with Steven Spielberg & the Cast of The Fabelmans

Behind-the-Scenes at TIFF with Steven Spielberg & the Cast of The Fabelmans

The Fabelmans is a 2022 American coming-of-age drama film directed by Steven Spielberg, who co-wrote and co-produced it with Tony Kushner. The film is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence and first years as a filmmaker, told through an original story of the fictional Sammy Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker who explores how the power of films can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him. It stars Gabriel LaBelle as Sammy, alongside Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch in supporting roles.

The Fabelmans had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2022, where it won the People's Choice Award. The film received widespread critical acclaim for the performances of the cast, Spielberg's direction, the screenplay, cinematography, and John Williams' musical score. It was named one of the top ten films of 2022 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.

The film received five nominations at the 80th Golden Globe Awards in 2023, winning Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director for Spielberg. It also received 11 nominations at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards, including Best Picture, winning Best Young Performer for LaBelle.

In this episode, I take you behind-the-scenes with Steven Spielberg and the cast at the Fabelmans at its TIFF premiere, where even more about Steven’s life & family, beginnings as a filmmaker, and casting decisions, are revealed.

In Memory of a Passionate Fundraiser - My Conversation with the Late Mark Mendelson, CEO of BGU Canada at Ben-Gurion University Toronto’s The Future Is Now Gala, Featuring Actor Michael J. Fox

This November, I interviewed the late Mark Mendelson, CEO of BGU Canada at Ben-Gurion University Toronto’s The Future Is Now Gala Featuring Actor Michael J. Fox. Although it was our first-time meeting, Mark’s fundraising in Canada for Israel-based institutions and other successes as a leader in the Jewish Community was evident. Sadly, he suddenly passed away in Montreal at the age of 73, just days after the event.

Mark served as the CEO of Ben-Gurion University Canada for the past 12 years. Previously, he was the executive director of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) for Eastern Canada for 17 years.

Known for his signature navy blazer and moustache, his love of family, good food & wine, art, cooking and entertainment, Mark had a larger-than-life personality.

His work and devotion to BGU Canada was also apparent - having expanded its presence across Canada and increasing the amount of money raised. Despite the limitations of the pandemic, Mark recently reported to supporters that the organization had had a record financial year.

Making BGU, Israel’s youngest university in the developing Negev Desert, become better known in Canada, became Mark’s true mission.

Mark shares how BGU transformed into a dynamic university becoming Israel’s fastest-growing university at the forefront of medical research & development with its Medical Simulation Building, enrolling over 20,000 Jewish, Palestinian & Arab students each year, the impact its research has on autism, and much more!

Multi Juno Award-Winning Canadian Singer/Songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk Featured Entertainer at The Vaughan International Film Festival's Awards Gala

Multi Juno Award-Winning Canadian Singer/Songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk Featured Entertainer at The Vaughan International Film Festival's Awards Gala

Canadian singer, songwriter, composer, and pianist, Chantal Kreviazuk was born in Winnipeg. She played music from a young age before signing with Columbia Records in the 1990s. Her debut studio album, Under These Rocks and Stones, was first released in Canada in 1996 and saw commercial success before being issued in the United States the following year to critical praise.
Kreviazuk released two more studio albums with the Columbia la-bel, Colour Moving and Still (1999) and What If It All Means Some-thing (2002), both of which brought moderate commercial success world-wide. She signed with Sony BMG for her fourth album, Ghost Stories (2006), which reached number two on the Canadian Albums Chart.
Since 2003, Kreviazuk has co-written and composed numerous songs for other artists as well as film soundtracks and has appeared in several Canadian independent and short films. Her fifth album, Plain Jane, was re-leased by Canadian independent label MapleMusic Recordings in 2009. Her most recent albums, Hard Sail and Get To You, were released by Warner Music Canada in 2016 and 2020, respectively. She also re-leased a Christmas album in 2019, called Christmas Is A Way Of Life, My Dear.
From the beginning of her career to 2016, Kreviazuk was the 51st best-selling Canadian artist in Canada.
Kreviazuk met Raine Maida, the lead singer of Our Lady Peace, at a Pearl Jam concert in Toronto in 1996. They married in December 1999, and have three sons, born January 2004, June 2005, and June 2008. In honour of their tenth wedding anniversary, Kreviazuk and Maida renewed their wed-ding vows in Costa Rica in November 2009. The family lives in Toronto and also has a home in the USA.
Kreviazuk and Maida appeared in the 2019 documentary film I'm Going to Break Your Heart, which detailed both their collaboration on the al-bum Moon vs. Sun, their first album recorded jointly as a duo, and the conflicts and tensions that had arisen in their marriage after 19 years.
Kreviazuk is a member of the Canadian charity Artists Against Racism and is also intimately involved with War Child and other charities.
Janette caught-up with her on the red carpet at 10th Annual Vaughan International Film Festival (VFF) Gala Awards (where she was the featured entertainer) to talk about her three-time Juno Award winner and collaborations with several other musicians, including Drake, Pitbull, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Kendrick Lamar and Pink, how she sees VFF helping young artists, and what more she’d like to see for Metis & Ukrainian artists.

Straight from its TIFF Red Carpet Premier Gala - Tyler Perry, Ryan Eggold & the Rest of the Cast of Perry’s New Netflix Movie, A Jazzman’s Blues, with a Surprise Visit from Oprah

Playwright, Producer, Director and Actor Tyler Perry’s latest epic, A Jazzman’s Blues, is now streaming on Netflix. It was the first screenplay he ever wrote over 25 years ago. Set in Georgia, it stars actors Ryan Eggold (“Dr. Max Goodwin” on the NBC series, New Amsterdam), Joshua Boone, Solea Pfeiffer, Amirah Vann, and Austin Scott in a story of forbidden love and family secrets that stretches from the 1940’s to the 1980’s. Throw in the couple’s forced separation, “Leanne”, the female lead passing herself off as White & marrying a prominent White man, her mother “Ethel”, played by Lana Young, a tantalizing murder-mystery spiked with dazzling musical numbers choreographed by the legendary Debbie Allen, music composed by Aaron Zigman, and a nod to the Holocaust in “Ira”, Eggold’s character; and you have another testament to Black American music, resilience and storytelling that is very different from Perry’s previous comedic works.  A Jazzman’s Blues also explores the shared experience between American Blacks & Jews and their strong connection during the Civil Rights Movement, reminding us that love conquers all, including racism. Hailed for his humanity, Perry transformed himself from flat broke and sleeping in his car to one of Hollywood’s foremost screenwriters and comedians, reaching Billionaire status. As Accredited Media, I had the privilege of attending A Jazzman’s Blues TIFF Red Carpet Gala to chat with Perry about why making this film was on his bucket list, how it might just be the mark of a new chapter from him and how his faith & conviction carried him through. I also spoke to the rest of the cast about what attracted them to their roles, and the movie’s meaning & purpose. One of Perry’s best friends, Oprah Winfrey, even dropped by.

Ukraine vs. Russia – The Inside Scoop with Ukrainian Filmmakers Serge & Nathalie Velbovets

I met Film Director & CEO Serge Vebovets of VELBIX FILMS and his lovely wife Nathalie Velbovets, both of whom immigrated to Canada 11 years ago from Ukraine, while interviewing & filming at The Vaughan International Film Festival. A riveting conversation ensued where I mentioned that my grandparents who hailed from Poland, Romania, Kiev and nearby towns, fled Ukraine between 1917 and 1921 to escape the Jewish Pogroms (when the USSR expelled its Jewish population). This led to a discussion on the current war between Ukraine & Russia and what Ukrainians have been experiencing for months on end. Although widely covered in the media, there are some things that have not been reported. In this interview, Serge & Nathalie give me an inside account of what their families, friends & filming crew deal with daily. They also share their perspectives and the world’s support and continued support of Ukraine, what more can be done to end the war, as well as on Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s leadership.

BOLD & BEAUTIFUL: CANADIAN ACTRESS KIM ROBERTS RECEIVES THE VAUGHAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2022 INDEPENDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD

BOLD & BEAUTIFUL: CANADIAN ACTRESS KIM ROBERTS RECEIVES THE VAUGHAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2022 INDEPENDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD

If you’re a fan of Schitt’s Creek, The Handmaids Tale, The Saw III, The Saw IV, Rember, PawPortal, Killjoys, The Tuxedo, Degrassi: The Next Generation and Working Moms, you’ll instantly recognize the very bold, beautiful, and talented Canadian Actress Kim Roberts, winner of The Vaughan International Film Festival 2022 Independent Leadership Award. She’s one of the hardest and longest working Canadian Black actresses in Canada with an extensive list of impressive and diverse roles. Kim was also the first Black Actress to receive a speaking part in a commercial in Canada in the 1990’s. Yes, that’s how long it took! Because sadly, when Black actors and actresses make headlines, it’s not always treated well. Such as with the announcement of Ncuti Gatwa as the 14th Doctor in Doctor Who, the first Black doctor; Moses Ingram receiving abuse, forcing Star Wars co star Ewan McGregor to defend her; and Steve Toussaint being forced to defend his appearance on Game of Thrones for being a Black character in a house that is seemingly only allowed to be white. Kim and other Black actors’ achievements should be lauded, not treated as a surprise that they were able to do it because they were Black. Janette caught up with Kim at The Vaughan International Film Festival Gala awards to talk about her big win, her illustrious career with its highs & lows, reversing Roe vs. Wade, and what’s next for her.

What Kind of Friend Are You - THE F.R.I.E.N.D.S TM EXPERIENCE TORONTO with Stacy Moscatelli, Co-President and Chief Strategy Expert for SuperflyX

If you’re a child of the 90’s, you will likely remember the iconic sitcom Friends starring David Schwimmer (Ross Geller), Courteney Cox (Monica Geller), Jennifer Anniston (Rachel Green), Matthew Perry (Chandler Bing), Matt Leblanc (Joey Tribbiani), and Lisa Kudrow (Pheobe Buffay). It ran on Thursday nights for 10 seasons, on NBC. Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the series followed six young men and women residing in the same apartment complex and how they faced life and love together in Manhattan, New York City. Constantly sticking their noses into each another's businesses, as well as sometimes swapping romantic partners, the group always got into the kind of comedic situations that most other people never deal with, especially during breakups. In this Janette’s TV & Podcast episode, Janette sits down with Stacy Moscatelli, Co-President and Chief Strategy Expert for SuperflyX, the company that creates The Friends Experience Toronto,  as well as in major U.S. cities, to discuss what you can expect to see in the exhibit’s 12 showrooms replicating the set of Friends, why people are still so drawn to the show, what we can learn about friendship post-COVID from the characters, and much more!

EQUAL PAY & THE FUTURE OF FOOTBALL With MAGGIE MURPHY, CEO, LEWES FC

In this Janette’s TV and Janette’s TV Podcast episode, Janette sits down with Maggie Murphy who was General Manager of the Lewes FC Women’s Team from 2019-2021, then elected to CEO of Lewes FC in 2021. Lewes Football Club was founded back in 1885 and is located in Lewes, East Sussex, England where Maggie joins us from. In 2017, they launched the ground-breaking Equality FC campaign that saw Lewes FC become the first (and currently only) club in the world to have equal playing budgets for women and men. Maggie sheds light on the history of Women & Football (Soccer) and how The FA Cup began in 1871. Women started playing in 1891. The Football Association banned women’s football in 1921 when the first Women’s FA Cup was played and didn’t reinstate it until 1971 (because they considered women’s football to be ‘unsuitable for a woman’s frame’, and ‘quite inappropriate for most women’). The 50-year ban allowed men’s teams to grow to the popularity they are now, while women were stunted from reaching the same level. Find out how she and Lewes FC are changing it and how you can play a part.

THE CANADIAN SCREEN ACTORS AWARDS: Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers Wins Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role For Her Portrayal of "Niska" in the Movie Night Raiders

THE CANADIAN SCREEN ACTORS AWARDS: Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers Wins Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role For Her Portrayal of "Niska" in the Movie Night Raiders

Written and directed by Danis Goulet, who is Cree Métis from northern

Saskatchewan, Night Raiders is a film about harm, abuse, violence, and/or

intergenerational trauma due to colonial practices. It is one of the most

important Canadian films made in recent times. A searing thriller set in the

near future; it digs deep into Canada's painful past to craft a compelling,

propulsive piece of genre cinema.

After a destructive war across North America, a military occupation seizes

control of society. One of their core tactics: taking children from their

families and putting them into State Academies or forced-education camps.

Niska (played by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) is a Cree mother desperate to

protect her daughter Waseese (played by Brooklyn Letexier-Hart). But events

force mother and daughter to separate, leading Niska to join a group of Cree

vigilantes to get her daughter back.

This story echoes the real forced assimilation of Indigenous children that

colonizing powers undertook in Canada, the US, Australia, and beyond. It

transforms the ugly reality of residential schools into remarkable,

cinematic piece. Goulet's vision, combined with powerful performances from

Tailfeathers, Letexier-Hart, and Gail Maurice, bring this speculative future

into dialogue with our past. Night Raiders is not just a singular Canadian

film, but a new view of Canada for the entire world.

Janette's TV & Podcast were among Canada's top accredited media at The

Canadian Screen Actors Awards virtual red carpet press room interviewing the

event's big winners. In this second episode of our special CSA series,

Janette talks with actress Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, who took home the award

for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in

this movie, about what this role meant to her and the Indigenous community,

and what she would like to see happen next for Indigenous actors, writers,

directors, and producers.

Canadian Screen Actors Awards: Scarborough Wins Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Achievement in Direction, & Best Picture

Sunday, April 10th, Canadian actors, producers, directors, and writers in TV & Film as well as Broadcasters were nominated and awarded for their outstanding work at The Canadian Screen Actors Awards - Canada’s equivalent to The Oscars and The Emmys. Hosted by actor Simu Liu (Shang-Chi in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), the event aired virtually on CBC. Janette’s TV & Podcast were among Canada’s top accredited media in the virtual red carpet press room, interviewing the big winners for the first time. In this initial episode in our special CSA series, Janette speaks with actor, Liam Diaz, who plays “Bing” in the movie, Scarborough, Best Picture winner. Diaz won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role – an incredible accomplishment considering this was his first-ever acting job. Scarborough is an amazing movie with a powerful message that explores the struggles, endurance, and resilience of this culturally diverse Toronto community through the lives of three kids growing up within a system that has set them up for failure. Filmed on location in the Kingston-Galloway/West Hill neighbourhood, Scarborough takes place over the course of a school year. Producer/Writing team, Shaskha Nakhai & Rich Willaimson, winners of Best Achievement in Direction, were also on-hand to discuss what motivated them to make this film.
