BACKTALK: Does Teaching White Fragility Hurt Black Children?

BACKTALK: Does Teaching White Fragility Hurt Black Children?

SuccessfulBlackParenting.com -- Does Teaching White Fragility Hurt Black Children? On January 2, 2021, the New York Post published an article by freelance opinion writer Rav Arora titled, “Teaching ‘White Fragility’ Is Bad For Kids Of Color.” Arora appeared on BackTalk, Successful Black Parenting’s syndicated podcast and webcast for parents, along with Dr. Nakia Hamlett, a psychologist whose research focuses on mental health and trauma in Black children, and Lauryn Whitney, a mother and Black child advocate.

Arora’s article references the book by author Robin DiAngelo titled, White Fragilitywhich teaches white people how to discuss sensitive racial issues through adapting behaviors that often stymie race-based conversations. DiAngelo was also invited on BackTalk but could not attend due to a scheduling conflict.

In this episode of BackTalk, the guests along with our publisher, J.R. Celeste discuss Arora’s article, along with other controversial issues such as affirmative action, murders of Black men by police officers, white privilege, and more. Listen to learn about Successful Black Parenting’s stance on teaching Black children about white fragility and how to help your child to manage racial awareness and confrontation.

BACKTALK: The TALK -- A Parent Conversation About Race in America

The recent killings of Amaud Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, and Georg Floyd have left most of us with feelings of anger, sadness, and fear for our Black children and family members as they journey into adulthood. How do we tell our children the ugly truth about racism, discrimination, and inequality in the world around us? We composed a panel of proactive Black parents to explore approaches and to provide resources for protecting our children. We had a virtual discussion about how parents are tackling these difficult conversations and the community-at-large chimed-in too!

We asked hard questions, we affirmed each others' fears, and we came up with solutions to shield and to protect our children. We even provided The TALK Tool Kit for parents to download. You can get it here!  For students experiencing racism in school from other students arm them with positive clapbacks and as a parent help them to learn how to navigate a racist world.

You can watch the live stream every Saturday and join in the conversation by adding your comments or questions, sign-up for notifications on our Facebook page.

BACKTALK: Black Children's Book Authors You Don't Know About Yet!

BACKtalk, the talk show for Black parents with host, Janice Robinson-Celeste

Janice had an intense discussion with Carylee Carrington about Black children's books and their authors. Note: Not all Black children's books are by Black authors, so do your research.

Carylee is a children's book author, arts and literacy advocate, and host of The Read with Carylee Show. She is a proud black mom of two boys living in Nothern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., on a mission to introduce children to diverse children's book authors and help children develop kindness and courage. It all started when her son came home upset after hearing a racist remark on the school playground in Kindergarten. Since then, she has written two books ("Everyone, Just Like Me" and "Pretty Hair") teaching children to embrace their differences and treat others with kindness. In the fall she began hosting a new literary show "The Read with Carylee Show" (available on SoulVisionTV, YouTube & Facebook) that features indie and up-and-coming children's book authors, the majority who are black, but also from a wide variety of races and backgrounds.

BACKTALK: Does Your Child Suffer From Eczema - Listen To This!

BACKTALK: Does Your Child Suffer From Eczema - Listen To This!

BACKTALK: Does Your Child Suffer From Eczema - Listen To This!

It's National Eczema Awareness Month and Janice interviewed the Dixon Family whose son Isaiah, has chronic atopic dermatitis, another name for eczema. Isaiah and his family were part of a new video series that highlights the challenges of severe eczema and offers advice for teen sufferers, called The Understand AD Squad, which tackles the everyday physical and emotional challenges faced by teens living with atopic dermatitis (AD) and their caregivers. You can check out the full series here.

The Dixon family teamed up with a dermatologist, psychotherapist, and an adult patient peer to help raise awareness and inspire kindness and empathy for teens battling atopic dermatitis alongside usable tools for other families who are managing the disease.

Throughout his life, Isaiah’s symptoms have caused frequent hospitalizations, school absences and emotional stress for him and his loved ones – even forcing him to miss out on team sports and playing outside with other kids, as sweat could trigger a skin flare-up that would make being active difficult and even painful.

There are 400,000 adolescents in the United States living with uncontrolled moderate-to-severe AD. Despite the disease prevalence, there remains a great amount of stigma and lack of knowledge around the disease. Teens living with a chronic illness like moderate-to-severe AD face unique challenges as they have to manage their disease on top of both the academic and social pressures.

According to one study,

·  39% reporter being bullied or teased about their AD at some time in their life

·  52% were depressed

·  50% were concerned about being seen in public

·  36% reported decreased self-confidence
